The BCS bowls were announced yesterday and the national title game will be Ohio State vs Florida. I've been hearing discussion and debate all over ESPN and I was wondering what you guys think.

Me? I wanted USC to win on Saturday. :x

the BCS is a joke. College football chooses it's "champion" in the most messed up way possible.

They need to work out a playoff system. That is the only way people will not debate forever about who deserves to be in the champinship and who the computers actually put there.

Brian

I hear ya. Plus, if they follow a March Madness-style playoff format, it would make things much more interesting. Remember George Mason at the the Final Four last season? Throw the BCS in a garbage can and light it on fire. They need a playoff system badly...

It's all about money and prestige of the colleges.

oh well. *waves a Florida flag* Go Gators (gotta keep my love in the SEC)

That is the only way people will not debate forever about who deserves to be in the champinship and who the computers actually put there. The computers didn't put Florida in the Championship game. The computers actually rated Michigan and Florida exactly the same (.940). The voter polls that are used in connection w/ the computers to determine the BCS matchups were the ones that put Florida in the game.

yeah, I know. I meant that as a general statement, not one connected to this specific year.

I barely watch college football anymore....heck I barely watch Pro lately....I just remember being a youger Katie and my dad trying to explain the BCS all to me. I found it to be really pretty stupid.

I do think Michigan got hosed though. They made a great showing at that last game, and were the only team to give the Buckeyes real resistance this season. I don't doubt that Florida also deserves the spot, though. And a OSU/UM rematch might be too much for Glendale to handle.

As for Florida... ehh, haven't been following Florida. But I lived in Ohio for my whole pre-college life, so I was raised a Buckeye. :P I'll be home for Christmas, but unfortunately I won't be there for the Game, as that Monday is the day school starts back up. Oh well... the dorm TV will work just as well.

Im a Nebraska fan. They did quite well, only USC and Oklahoma can really claim to have beat them. Nebraska gave up the games to Texas and Oklahoma St. Im not a die hard Cornhusker, but i do support them.

Im glad Florida is going to be given a chance to play for the national championship game. Michigan didnt get hosed. They had an opportunity to beat Ohio State and put themselves in the national title game, and they werent able to. End of story. How can a team not be the champ of its own conference yet have an opportunity to win the national championship? I was against Nebraska playing Miami for it a couple of years ago when they didnt make it to the Big 12 championship game too. The whole "they only lost to Ohio State" line isnt valid either. Going by that logic, Boise St. should be in the title game as they havent lost to anybody this year.

A playoff sounds good in theory, but where would the cut off be? Top eight? Top 12? Top 16? Bowls provide many programs with an opportunity to play one more game, it gives the coach more time to work with their players, and they provide a boost to local economies. I think the pros outweigh the cons.

It too bad that my other fav. team did not do as well as they usually do...they are in a rebuilding year. But they did hold onto Nebraska pretty close in the first half of the final game of the year.

Colorado? They should have kept running the ball, as their running back (Mel Holliday) was punishing Nebraskas defensive line. I was impressed with his runs, he didnt have many but the ones he did he was breaking for a decent chunk of yards. If the game would have went into the 4th quarter tied or with Colorado ahead, i think they could have beat Nebraska. The Cornhuskers of 06 dont show up for the second half of games.

FLORIDA ALL DAY, BABY!

Just look at my location: I was born and raised in Gator Country, so you know where my heart belongs. Gotta stick it out for my university.

What a joy it would be to know my school would be the first ever to win both the basketball and football championship in the same year. Don't wanna jinx it, though. I was so confident that we'd beat Auburn, and we ended up just getting edged in that game.

The BCS has nothing to do with winning the conference, it's supposed to be the two best teams.

Playoffs would be soooo much better and it would really decide who should win.

Krang's Uncle
12-10-2006, 07:08 PM
Best teams based on what? Who didnt lose and to whom? If thats the case you should be in support of a Ohio State vs Boise St championship game. Neither has lost a game. Everyone else was defeated at some point in their season so therefore going by that logic they cannot be considered. As it is, the BCS did provide a matchup of the two best teams, Ohio State and Florida. So much for not having to be a conference champ in order to be one of the best teams. You provide no answers, just a cheap cop out by saying a playoff would fix everything. Thats shows a real knowledge of college football and its structure.

It doesn't matter if Michigan already "had their opportunity", if they are the second best team in the country they deserve to be in the NC game. I'm not saying Michigan is better than Florida, because I really have no idea. But the whole "Michigan had their chance" argument is b.s.

Don't even mention Boise State...

Krang's Uncle
12-11-2006, 10:08 AM
Unfortunately, Michigan did have their chance and lost. The only b.s. going on is the belief that they are entitled to another game against Ohio State for the championship game. And once again, we have another person that rants and raves yet provides no solution or reason why something is b.s.

Boise State deserves as much if not more of a shot than Michigan. Period.

Mr. Snackpants
12-11-2006, 07:49 PM
No soulution? Did I even suggest one? No.

It does not matter if Michigan had already played Ohio State once. The point of a Championship is the two best teams battling it out. THere is no rule stating there cannot be a rematch. Rematches happen in championships sometimes.

I did not say they are entitled to a NC berth. Both Florida and Michigan are deserving. But don't count Michigan out because "they already had their chance". Last I checked Michigan hasn't played for the NC this year. They played Ohio State in Columbus. So no, they haven't had a chance already. That was regular season and this is the bowl season.

Boise State? Please. You know darn well Boise doesn't belong in Glendale. Have you seen their schedule? First off, they play in the WAC. And second they played a DIAA team. The best team they played was Oregon State (and I don't care if they upset USC). Wow, what a schedule that was.

OA
12-11-2006, 08:21 PM
Boise State?!?! You've got to be joking... just because a team goes undefeated doesnt mean they deserve to be in the NC game...i mean, did you see who they played?

But enough about that nonsense...lets talk about my tremendous Gators. What a year...those of you not privy to SEC football probably can't truly appreciate what a truly difficult road the Gators had to go through to come out 12-1. Most SEC schedules in general are extremely difficult, but this years Gators run was borderline rediculous (#1 rated strength of schedule in the country)...to come out with only one loss (and in a game we really should have won) and to not put us in the NC game would have been a total sham...

Michigan had a good year, but they had one loss as well and didn't win their conference...they had their chance to cement their position in the title game and they failed...we didn't

That said, the NC game should be great....if the Gators come to play, they could shock the world...i cant wait

p.s. oh, and the BCS sux...

Mr. Snackpants
12-11-2006, 10:12 PM
I also look forward to the game...i'm very interested in how the Gators will do. I've never really like Florida but they do have a good team. I look forward to watching Tebow in the years to come.

I agree, the SEC is without a doubt the toughest conference in the country. This is why Florida should be in the NC game(and they are conference champs)...this is their argument. As i've said before, they shouldn't be put in because people felt "Michigan had their chance", they should be put in because of their talent, schedule, and results.

But best of luck to Florida. Part of them hopes they win because I dislike OSU. But the senario of OSU pounding Florida and Michigan doing the same to USC would be best for people wanting the end of the BSC. But whatever, Central Michigan is in a bowl and that's all that matters to me :D

I ask for a solution from you because apparently you know what the best way to determine who should play in the national championship game. Youre a joke. Michigan played Ohio State knowing that whoever won was a lock to get into the championship game. They lost. Simple as that. And they dont get to play for a national championship because of that. Heres a shocker for you, the regular season determines what bowl game a team gets into. :o

I never said i wanted Boise State in the championship game, but if people are going to use the whole "Michigan was only beat by Ohio State and therefore should play them in the championship game" logic then a Boise State team that has beat all their opponents this year has just as much of a case for a shot as Michigan, as they are undefeated.

Cascadia
12-12-2006, 05:55 PM
I agree there is lots of variables that go into determine who is going to play in the national championship. One of the most important variables that goes into who goes to which bowl is the team's record from the season. Boise State was very good this year and they deserved to be in a big bowl because they are undefeated. As for Michigan, they knew that when they went into the game vs. Ohio State that the winner would be going to the national championship and the other team would go to another bowl.

R-iZZy
12-12-2006, 06:27 PM
The fact that my Gators could even come out of the SEC as Champs this season is enough reason to put them in the NC. I mean where is Michigan's conference championship? Oh wait, Ohio State has it. It would only make since to put the two champs of the two toughest conferences in the NC.

And saying Michigan losing their shot when they lost to Ohio State IS NOT bulls***. What kind of logic is that? A champion would overcome odds, including defeating their opposition on away turf. That's what makes a team one of the best. Michigan proved that they couldn't do that, even without controversial official calls. As for Florida, check the stats on when they lost to Auburn. They allowed no offensive touchdowns for the Tigers, and officials made plenty of bad calls (the "fumble" being the most controversial).

Now if we compare Michigan and Florida's schedule, which team has the stronger one? How many ranked opponents did each team face? What were the combined records of their opponents? If you look at all of these, they come in Florida's favor. And at the end of it all, the one distinct fact that separates the two teams is that yes... Florida AT LEAST can claim to be Champs of their conference.

No one wanted to see the rematch, anyway. It's time to give another team a shot at the Buckeyes.

Mr. Snackpants
12-12-2006, 09:40 PM
I'm not disputing Florida's schedule or talent. I think they have a good chance to win and might be better than Michigan. The only thing i'm trying to say is, Florida shouldn't have jumped Michigan in the BCS based on a possible rematch alone. That's all.

But there's no point in debating this issue anymore...especially with a Gator fan and a Nebraska fan because it's pointless.

Cascadia
12-12-2006, 09:45 PM

That was definitely a great game - I'm in no way connected to Boise State but we were all jumping around like idiots when they won. :D

Um..im not too sure about that...while they did go undefeated (which is impressive by any rite), they basically played no one even remotely difficult, except for maybe Oregon State and maybe, maybe Hawaii...half of their wins (6 teams) came from teams who finished the year with dismal, losing records...

The Fiesta Bowl last night was amazing. There is no way the NC game can live up to that. I mean ultimately deciding who wins the National Championship is more important than who wins the Fiesta Bowl but from a football fan's perspective the Fiesta Bowl will live on forever on ESPN Classical and in the minds of everyone who watched it. I probalby won't even remember who won the national championship in 2006/2007 10 years down the line, but I'll never forget this year's fiesta bowl.

Yeah, the Boise State-Oklahoma game was just simply top-notch college football at its finest. The Boise St. coach showed crazy guts going for the two-point conversion in overtime with the Statue of Liberty play. Simply amazing game from both ends.

Duke
01-03-2007, 10:16 AM
I'm not sure it was as much guts that persuaded Bosie State to go for two as it was desparation. Their defense was spent and the coach knew he wouldn't be able to stop Oklahoma from scoring 7/8 points every offensive position. His team was tired, so he went for the win in the first overtime whether than ultimately losing in a subsequent overtime. I'd call it more great coaching (knowing your team & their limitations) than I would gutsy.

The Gators did great, of course... hats off to them. However, if Ohio State had actually showed up, it might have been an interesting game. They said that's more points they allowed since 1999. Whatever happened?

State did show up, problem was they were outcoached and outplayed by a better team. Ginn or not, they were dominated. Injuries happen, teams have to deal with that. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing that both the top teams in the Big 10 were creamed. For all the complaints about the BCS and how it doesnt "get it right," there isnt much anyone can complain about. Boise State? Nope. The coin toss to determine who started the overtime in essence won them the game. Congrats Florida.

Wow....unfreakingbelievable...

What a whopping. From top to bottom, we destroyed OSU. What happened? All season long, all the talk is how OSU is sooo dominant. But really, against top teams (except for against Texas- i'll give them that one.), they were very mediocre (sounds a little like Notre Dame doesn't it...)

The best part is that hands down NOBODY can say UF didnt truly win that game. Sure people will talk about Ginn not being there, the 51 day layoff (keep in mind that UF had 35 days as well), but without a doubt UF came to play and OSU didn't.

Man, and I thought nothing could top winning the basketball championship...sheesh...

it truly is great to be a Florida Gator!!

Masked Ninja

I honestly think the Bucks' long reign as #1 before the game killed 'em... remember we don't have any serious pro teams in Columbus, so the Bucks ARE our pro team. A lot of people practically worship them. They probably got complacent as a result, and once UF knocked 'em off balance, they were unable to get back up and play like they have all season, especially since they haven't had to try and make a comeback like that in a long time. Even Michigan was in the bag well before that game ended (though the score doesn't show it as much). Yes, they were outplayed, but I don't think Florida is 27 points better. They just stayed cool while OSU was busy freaking out.

I think the Gators studied their film better, too. Troy Smith is a great QB, so what do you do? Overpower the offensive line and stop him from being able to do any damage. And this they did extremely well, kudos.

It just annoys me a bit to hear people go "ooh, OVERRATED" when OSU stayed on top all season long, and beat two #2 teams. Seems 3rd time was the charm for the Gators, and a doozy of a charm it was... hardly had to work for it, even. Am I still embarrassed by the Bucks' worst performance this century? Sure. But at least it's only a game, and I can resume cheering for my team next year... it'll be interesting to see who the new QB will be...

Krang's Uncle
01-10-2007, 02:50 AM
A better team killed Ohio State. As a whole, i think the Big 10 is overrated. Look at how their two best teams were throttled in their bowl games. And to think a lot of people felt they should have faced each other for the national championship. A coachs job is to make sure his team doesnt get complacent. Monday night showed that Tressel didnt step up for this game like Meyer did, and his team wasnt good enough. Overrated? Yes. Ohio State has a good football team, no doubt. But they werent the best. The crown is given after the game, not before.

I seriously tried my best not to come in this thread and talk s***, but maaan, with the media and the majority of America doubting the Gators, I can't help but to smear all of that glory in every doubter's face! As I've always said, the real challenge has always been in the SEC. And I don't understand how maybe three teams in the Big Ten could've swayed the media to think otherwise.

This just goes to show that people forget just how tough the SEC is. Perhaps it looked like Ohio State had dominated this season. But they played teams that weren't competition. I always knew the SEC was more dangerous than the Big Ten, so to see this happening wasn't a surprise.

Anyway, Gainesville is STILL celebrating the victory and being the only school to hold both the basketball and football championships at the same time. It's lovely! I love being here. Seriously, after the game was over, it was practically worthless to drive your car through University Avenue (where the football and basketball stadiums, campus and dorms are), it was a chaotic celebration going for blocks! Random people became friends that night!

Anyway, it's good that the Gators did this, not only for Gainesville and us students of UF, but also for the SEC. This should remind people that we are and always have been the toughest conference in the nation.

OA

I agree with you completely man. Bout damn time the world saw how powerful the SEC could be, not only winning this game but the whopping LSU put on Notre Dame as well...

And man, I ENVY you being up there in Gville right now. That musta been nuts that night. Anyhow, I'll be going up tomorrow for the rally so at least i can get a bit of taste of it....

And the crazy thing, is that we have a very legitimate chance of winning the basketball trophy again as well....exciting times!!!
