I know, I know...I've made countless comments on here saying about how I love the 80s and thus my peers consider me a freak for it. Until now, I never took that little predicament seriously. Hey, I am my own person after all. But about a week or so ago one of my friends at school told me, word for word, in person: "THE 80S SUCKED!"
When I asked him why he thought so, his answer was, "They just did!" My theory was, and it's very likely considering how mainstream my school is, that the only reason he thinks so is because everybody else does. What a lame-brain for thinking so...
So, I'm making this post for about 2 reasons:
-To spite him and
-To show him that I'm not the only person in the whole world that appreciates and LOVES the stuff that came out of the 80s
At the time I'm making this post I'm in my Latin class, where my teacher just happens to be a child of the 80s herself...
So please, if you were either old enough to remember the decade or just plain love it, POST, so I can show him!!!! :P :P :P

I loved the '80s! It was a great decade to be a child, yet I regret not being able to remember much of that time period.

I don't remember much...I was born in late 1988..Sadly, my earliest memory was in 1990..I remember my sister being born..
I love the 80s..I got to expierence a lot of it in the early 90s though. Transformers, He-Man, Thundercats, Ninja Turtles..that was awesome..Even some 80s music is pretty good.

It is just stupid to sau that some decade sucks...
And 80's... Many great things were made then. First of course the TMNT. I belive it was 1983.
And the best action movies were done then too. Like Diehard or Terminator. They just can't make movies that good anymore...

You think your friends think your a diehard 80's hardliner? oh boy...all the forums I go to Im known as the 80's revisionist buff, LOL.
For anyone that says the 80's sucked, they were too young to remember.
I was conscious during the entire decade, so I remember very vividly everything. I remember the last great TMNT year(before the floodgates broke and they went down the toilet) 1989...perhaps the greatest year ever. I have fond memories of seeing Jedi, Goonies, Willow, Muppets Take Manhattan, Back to the Future 2, etc in theatres. The 80's had some of the best films, besides the aforementioned...ya had Dark Crystal, Labyrinth, Tron, Blade Runner, Aliens, etc. The best video games came out in the latter part of the decade like Metroid, Contra, Double Dragon, etc(Not the crappy NES versions, but the arcade versions) Some of the best music came from this deacde(the real alternative, not that grunge or tough guy rap metal bulldoo of the late 90's) Some of th ebest books Ive read, from William Gibson's Neuromancer to Crighton's Jurassic Park.
It was just a really unbelievably cool time to be alive. Once the 90's came about, all that fun innocence joy imagination and wonder was lost. In came the decade of youth angst, agression, and destruction. From Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit to Columbine, with OJ and the LA Riors in between.
But the point isnt merely to regurgetate carbon copies of what worked in the 80's...no. Notice fantasy films are back, but in a modern light. Notice Transformers and TMNT are back; but again in a new updated look(Well cept for that crappy TMNT comic out) Video games, same thing...companies realize there was something glorious and great about late 80's gaming that people like...so here we got a new Metroid, Contra, Shinobi, Zelda, etc.
So that's it...were all heading back to the future...80's entropy but in a new light.

I'm so happy! The 80's were the best. Everything was so much more innocent back then!

now, being a kid in the 80s was cool. some classic action movies were made then too.
BUT i still think the 80s mostly sucked. if you were a teenager or young adult...oh man...the music sucked, the style sucked, and the world was at a bad spot in history

Wha?? Are ya kidding me? The 80's was a great time to be a kid! TMNT, Transformers, He-Man, GI Joe, ThunderCats, Ghostbusters, etc. We had the best cartoons ever.
And the movies! C'mon now! Terminator, Goonies, Killer Clowns From Outer Space... Lots of classic stuff!
I loved the 80's. :anime:

Totally. Like I said, anyone who says the 80's sucked was way to young to even be aware. I mean sure there is the big hair mullet sporting hair metal side to it...but I mean we definately had the best cartoons. The first season of TMNT rocked so hard, and the original Transformers I cannot say enough good things. Fraggle Rock was like one of the greatest freaking shows ever. And the movies, I could write a book about the endless joys of 80's movies. I mean the best TMNT period IS FROM the 80's? How could people on here say that time sucked!??!?
Let's see...the 90's. Agrresive hate filled angry music, school shootings,
OJ, tough guy rap metal and boy bands, politically correctness, Pokemon,
horrific sequels to great 80's films(Back to the future 3, Robocop 3,
Never Ending Story 2 and 3, etc), etc.

The 80's were a cool decade to grow up in, but they sure had their dark moments.

You are saying the new Mirage comic is crappy? You are also saying that archie nad the old cartoon were crappy. The new comic has reach the olds level yet, But it certainly isn't crappy.
You claim you like the older Mirage, But think that the new one is crappy? Makes me wonder how much of a Mirage fan you really are...

Heh, and most of those events took place in 1989...1989 alone had:
Tienanmen Sq Massacre, US invading Panama and wreaking havoc there,
Exxon Valdez spill, the crumbling of the Berlin Wall and the fall of the USSR, the end of the Russian/Afghani war but the beginning of al Qaeda and Osama bin Laden, the great San Francisco earthquake(that began on national tv with the World Series Giants vs. the A's)
1989 was also the birth of the first modern internet(WHole Earth in SF),
the year the Simpsons and Seinfeld debuted on tv, the debut of the 16 bit era in video gaming, etc. So a lot of beginnings and ends. Thats why I call it the most explosive year in history since the 60's.
As for "Am I really a fan of mirage?" Gee, I'd say my extensive back issues of their 85 to 94 series should be enough to answer that.
My main point about the new series was how uninspired it seems in thsi day and age. I mean Stan Sakai is black and white, but hsi art always remains the same. Yet weve seen the TMNT evolve than devolve. I honestly dont think the new Mirage series is up to the old series. Wouldnt a really great story arc with modern cgi fused manga tinged glossy color pages be a bit more appealing? I think so.

Yeah, I guess crap was a strong word. I guess every time I flip through the Dec 2001 to current Mirage TMNT series it just doesnt do anything for me. Just the other day I was going through old TPB of the original series and Jim Lawson late 80's takeover and was amazed. So it is definately not the black and white thing(Heck a lot of my fave comics are black and white, like JTHM and Oni Press titles)

yea, Zao, people have to hear the other side too! As for the 80's, I lived almost 4 years, and I liked it because they had such good cartoons for kids beginning to grow up, even if you didn't get it all, heh. I think cartoons now are too obnoxious and annoying voices as well as very loud, but hey, who am I to say? I am not a kid anymore, so therefore I have no right to judge... I think the 80's were good to grow up in, but not necessarily when you are a teenager or 20's guy... My theory is that people tend to like the decade they grew up in...it is kinda hard to explain though...
But as for beaker, he was becoming a teen in 90's no wonder he hated it so much. As for that Simpsons comment...how can you even say simpsons is 80's??? They debuted yes, but with one whole episode...and that one was 12/17/89, LMFAO!!!!    Geez, that was only a christmas special anyway, the actual series really began in '90 man....

Hey, I just said they debuted in the late 80's, I didnt say they got big in the late 80's. They actually technically debuted in 1987, but didnt get mainstream til 1990. After the TMNT thing blew up and died down, then the Simpsons came in to full force mainstream.

Yeah, Back to the future 2 is one of my fave films of the 80's. Because it came out at the very end of the decade(Nov 1989) it was able to really reflect back on the 80's(like the 80's cafe scene) BTTF 3, like most sequels that came out in the early 90's(TMNT 2, Bill and Teds Bogus Journey, Never Ending Story 2, etc) was beyond unwatchable.

Oh god....now beaker is considering tmnt an 80's movie, sheesh. Yea karpo, you were right, there is a big difference in movies from 90's and 80's, I found that the plots were executed in a way incomparably better in the 90's. The 80's movies were mostly dull to watch with fuzzy and dark screens, most companies didn't pay much money to make the quality better, so it is like watching a 20's movie....
Whatever, I just get pissed off when people try to bash a decade, geez, all it is, is 10 years...it isn't like once they got to jan 1st of a different decade they decide to do things in a whole different fashion. I see where you are coming from Matt....

Some historians would say that the war that began in 1914 did not end until the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.That actually makes perfect sense; Lenin took control of Russia during the first world war, thus the beginning of communism in Europe. The whole "red scare" took place during the time afterwards. In the late 30s Hitler rose to power in Germany, and he had constant quarrels and hatred towards the Russian commnunists and especially Joseph Stalin. While I don't remember every nitty-gritty detail of the relationship between Germany and Russia during that time, but we all the outcome of the Nazi defeat. Then there was the Cold War between the US and Russia for almost 40 years, which technically started just before or right at the end of WWII. The constant power struggle caused panic (take the Cuban Missle Crisis for example) and chaos in the world at times. Of course we can't forget how Europe was divided afterwards (West being the Capitalist side, East being Communist). Things only worsened in the 1960s when Krushchev erected the Berlin Wall as a symbol of his Communist power, only to have the wall fall less than 30 years later during the rule of Gorbachev, and that eventually led to the fall of the Soviet Union (was that a second fall of Rome?).
Speaking of the Nazis and Star Wars, have you noticed that not only does George Lucas' story parallel to the rise of Hitler's power in Europe during the 30's and 40s, but the uniforms of the Imperial officers in episodes 4, 5, and 6 look vaguely similar to Nazi uniforms? Coincidence? I think not! In fact, my mom told me how she thought that his inspiration for the science fiction epic stemmed from what she told me was a "Nazi scare" in the late 60s and early 70s. It makes so much sense to me.

Actually I read somewhere that George Lucas based the Empire in the Star Wars films on the Third Reich. Even Darth Vader's helmet resembles the German steel helmets used in WWI.
