View Full Version : What did you think of the Turtles various love interests?

One aspect of the Turtles I never really liked all that much was them having love interests, yet in a wide variety of comics/cartoons etc. the Turtles were either crushing or intimate with someone.

- Raph liked Mona Lisa in the original cartoon and dated Ninjara in the Archie comics.

- Mikey "got to third base" with Sara in the Image comics and got down and dirty with the Regenta in Volume 4. In the original show, he also had a crush on Kala the Neutrino. (Amusing enough Mikey gets it all)

- Leo seemed to have a thing for Lotus Blossom in the original cartoon, and in the new show it seems he has a thing for Karai as well.

- Don, although I'm probably wrong, I don't remember him having an ongoing love interest.

Also in the movies, especially the first one, all four Turtles seemed to have a crush on April.

So what did you think about the Turtles various love interests?

Well, I never really got into the comics, so I can't have much of an opinion there. However, In the movies and the cartoons, I've never had a problem with the turtles' love interests, except Karai.
Truth is, I don't really believe there's anything between Karai and Leonardo at all. Everything that's happened between Karai and the turtles in the new toon was strictly business, and never became personal until it became about revenge, in which case all feelings became negative. Lotus was all right, even though she was somewhat greedy for gold (but hey, everyone needs money); but Karai is the HELL BITCH, and I hope she gets her spleen split open or her throat slashed!

I always thought the new toon hinted that Donetello kind of has a thing for April. In like every other cartoon that I have seen, he's rescuing her, or down right carrying her away from danger in his arms.

And no, relationships didn't bug me except with Leo's and Karai's. That was weird, and I dont think the interractions were strictly business, not until I saw this video on youtube. *whistles while walking away*

Oh, when I heard Mikey fathering a kid with a dinosaur, that was disturbing.

I agree about the hints in the new toon for Don liking April. Although he's not too loyal to her; he's always scooping up and saving some girl or other in that toon (Renet, Jhanna, etc.)...

The idea of them in romantic relationships always made me kind of uncomfortable. I guess I just like the turtles better when they are sort of tragic characters. They only really have each other, and can never have "normal" love lives, because they are freaks of nature. The old Mirage issue, "Sons of a Silent Age," mentions the aloneness of the Turtles, and their inability to breed. It's very poignant.

That's why it disturbed me a bit when Mikey "got to third base" with Sara :o , and then got even further with the Regenta (he's a father-to-be?) :o :o

I never really read the Archie comics, but Ninjara seemed wicked cool from the comic synposes. I think she and Raph are the one exception, and were good for each other. Plus that series was far-out enough for it to be okay for the Turtles to date.

It adds character to the turtles, especially since they are 4 unique personalities and their women would reflect their tastes in women. They're still teenage males, so they should at least be crushin on someone even if you preffer their story to be a tragic 'will always be alone' one. I mean, noone can tell me they all haven't at least admired April's cleavage or her bending over at least once in their lives...

^AAHHH. That explains why they let April climb out of the man hole first in the first movie!;)

There was Raph and Mezcaal in the Archie series... apparently they were married. Not sure if Mezcaal was a fox or a wolf... didn't see the stories leading up to that union.

I'm pretty sure she was a fox, the same race as Ninjara was. I guess once you had fox, you don't go back.

It's kinda sad how Future Raph warned Ninjara about their apparent break-up and to 'give him another chance'... only to have them break-up several issues later anyway.

I only know of the possible crushes the turtles have in the 2k3 series. I think that Don might hve liked April. Don also may have liked the alien girl from "The People's Choice" episode. Leo might have liked Karai, I'm really not sure. None of these 'crushes' the turtles had can really be confirmed.

This brings to mind when Splinter went to the Battle Nexus and the turtles wondered where he went. I think it was Mikey that said "Maybe he has a girlfriend.":D

I had no idea that in the comics Mikey's relationships went that far.

I think it would be cool if one of the turtles had a girlfriend that was a female mutant turtle.

Hahaha, well I think part of the problem is that people can't decide on the bases. I've heard at least a few different versions. Um... hope I can post these here. At any rate, I like the Turtles as tragically alone, but I definitely appreciate that they are teenage guys, and are probably quite horny and crushing on the ladies (or the men, I suppose, if any of the boys is gay).

Anyway, the bases:
FIRST: Kissing or making out of some sort... perhaps kissing with tongue?
SECOND: I've heard EITHER touching of any sort up the shirt, OR fingering/handjob stuff.
THIRD: I've heard EITHER touching of any sort down the pants/skirt, OR oral s*x.
ALL THE WAY: Heh. ;)

Mona was cute, I hate Ninjara, she didnt give him a chance to fix their relationship. Mona was cuter, flirtier and she obviously wanted him. HE crushed on april in the first movie but the powers that be decided that was wrong ...idiots. predjudice against a teen turtle guy whos forced not to be allowed to have a girl friend...
donnie's officially gotta thing for april in the new toon. hes crushing on every of ther freakin chick that crosses his path

i believe the regenta is framing mike, those eggs ain't his...you dont just make out and the next day and plop out a clutch over night. it's unrealistic. its at least a couple months before my turtle lays her eggs after getting cozy with donnie.

leo and karai...he'd like to get it on but she's a cobra who wants to kill him...hehehe

i have no problem with any of them in mirage comics taking a liking to someone for real not some lame one night stand (or in mikes case, swim) they do like girls, they are mature, healthy male mutant turtles...they have got to have some...natural instincts...that need to be taken care of...even if they can't reproduce, they got the hormones...

That's true. Whenever there are theads that involve turtle/human relationships and sex comes up, people would always argue before about how a TMNT/April thing wouldn't work out or she won't be able to have their kids and blah blah blah, but that doesn't mean the TMNT haven't at least THOUGHT of going at it with her just for the damn hell of it.

I actually like the Karai/Leo relationship--it's twisted and complex and freaking angsty...well, in the new 'toon, anyway (and probably in the comics, from what I hear, though they got along well enough there). Even if it's not necessarily a romantic one (though, really, if Karai were a guy, there'd be a weird slashy vibe to it), it still kind of dimensionalizes the two of them: Leo may have enough of his own demons to empathize with Karai, and Karai may have her own share of inner light to connect with Leo. Ironically, I think they may understand each other more than even their families do.

Lotus Blossom...aw, man, when I first saw that ep I was so distressed by the idea of Leo being all moony over a girl that I curled up in my Dad's lap and sulked all night. Yes, I was such a kid.

Ninjara seemed cool, even though I've only seen little of her. Too bad she and Raph broke up eventually--I think she left Raph for another fox or something over a incredibly dramatic story arc or something? Even the title was soap opera-ish: "Mooneyes".

Donnie/April is another favorite of mine--at least in the new 'toon--because it's got that sense of impending doom written all over it. I have a soft spot for unrequited love, and it's kind of sad sometimes to see Don have to watch April with Casey (because they are the main couple of the TMNT-verse, really). As for his thing with Sydney, well, I didn't really see it; he wasn't any more romantic toward her than he was to anyone else. Jhanna, though, he might have felt something for (odd that this happened right as Casey and April were becoming "official"...).

I always thought Mikey and Kala were cute, even though her voice was incredibly annoying. Mikey's a pimp! :P Except in the new 'toon--I don't think he's expressed interest in anyone in the new 'toon...

I got one word to describe this: bullsh**
I mean I wouldn't be surprised if Leonardo "had" sympathy for her, considering how her life was stuck between good and evil, how she was obligated to serve the Shredder and obligated to preserve her honor at the same time; that is probably the harshest type of lifestyle anyone could have. But Leonardo and the others seemed to understand this, after a while anyway; and they tried to help her out in any which way they could, and everytime she refused to turn from Shredder and start a new life, as they offered to help her with, they always gave her another chance.
And how did she thank them for all this?
By breaking into their home and trying to kill them.
It's true they did contribute to her father's final fate, BUT they weren't the ones who delivered this fate to him; it was the Utroms that did this through a fair trial, and they ended up deciding to exile him when they could've executed him instead, and in consideration of all the crimes, murders, etc. on C'hrell's criminal record, I'd say the mere fact that they allowed him to live was being 1000 times more merciful to him than he deserved, and I think Karai, considering how smart she is, should've at least acknowledged this if not accepted it. If she had acknowledged it, maybe she would've reconsidered the turtles' offer to help her start a new life as they promised before, but instead she decided vengeance was better, and there was no way she could reach the Utroms, so she chose to take it out on the turtles. After the events in "Scion of the Shredder" and "Prodigal Son", I'd say all sympathy for her went clear out the window.

Wow, that was friendly. I'm sorry that I was merely stating my opinion. I don't want this to descend into a "pro" or "anti"-Karai fight, but though I don't excuse her wrongdoings, I do believe she has her merits. People seem to forget that if Leo had not tried to reach out to her, Shredder would have killed him--he had him in his clutches and Karai actually raised her blade against her own father to stop him. Would she have done it if it had been any of his brothers? Maybe not. But the point is that for someone raised in the traditional Japanese manner--where family takes priority above everything--that took guts. And both Leo and Karai went through their own respective psychotic breakdowns after that fight. The difference was that Leo had his family while Karai had no one.

All right, I'm done.

I apologize for using the "b-s" word, I only meant to disagree, not offend you, and I realize I did it too harshly.
I'm sure she would've done the same for the other turtles or Splinter that she did for Leonardo in that scene, she believed her and her father had won the battle and that hurting them more wasn't necessary; although like I implied, she completely changed her mind about this after her father's trial.

S'all right; that's cool when you're having a face-to-face conversation with people and you can actually see their expressions when you're talking, but it can come off as offensive when you're posting on a messageboard. No harm done.

At any rate, we'll never really know for sure if she would've raised her blade against Shredder if it had been Splinter or any of Leo's brothers. I do think she would've hesitated if they were, though--I don't think they really register on her radar the way Leo does. Even after the conclusion of the trial where all four turtles are watching her being carted away, it's only Leonardo she addresses.

I don't think I'll change your opinion of Karai any more than you can change mine, so let's just agree to disagree. Understand, though, that I'm not condoning her actions--she made some pretty horrible decisions--but I don't think she's irredeemable, either (and neither do the turtles, if the Lost Season is any indication).

I too like the Leo and Karai relationship. Since Karai is one of my favorite TMNT heroines next to April. Even if it's not the average "love" relationship. Specially when she's been through a lot of vengences and suffering in Season 4, but least I know she'll have change of heart in the "Lost season"

Also I've only seen one (Old School)TMNT episode with the whole Lotus & Leo relationship. But she's as cool & admireable as Karai.

That's exactly it. One-dimensional relationships bore me; even if it's not strictly romantic, the connection they have with each other dimensionalizes them. It's very hard to find a strong fictional woman character who isn't a vanilla cardboard cutout, can kick ass just as well with the guys (without it coming off as a PC move), and has a costume that doesn't have her assets hanging out. Karai is flawed and tortured and controversial--what can you expect from a woman raised by the Shredder?--and she's a lot more interesting that way.

Don't feel bad about seeing one episode, I'm pretty sure there were only 2 Lotus episodes. The second one was a CBS one, I'm pretty sure it had something to do with Shredder posing as one of her ancestors as a trick to have her fight against the turtles again. I still remember her line from her first appearance.

"I'm sorry Leonardo, but I don't see much good in goodness."

Sorry for being nitpicky, but it was "there is no gold in goodness." She was a mercenary type--she kicked Krang's butt when he refused to pay her--and even tried to get Leo to join her as "ninjas for hire". Quite possibly the funniest thing about the episode was Bebop and Rocksteady getting all excited trying to decide who to root for when she and Leo duel (Shredder: "Will someone just trash someone!").

God, I used to be so distressed by that episode when I was a kid. No wonder I remember it so well.

I think the new toon would have gotten around to it if it hadn't had to go all crappy Fast Foward on us. I thought I saw a bit of the relationship tension comeing around during the episode where Don goes Gamera on us.

Not in fanon...but I can so see him being all monk-like. :D Now if only he'd stop looking at Karai or Lotus or that chick in the Utroms' reality device.

Donnie doesn't strike me as very player-like in the new 'toon, though--his crush on April, though intriguing, is very much doomed, and it was very suspicious that he ran into Jhanna just as April and Casey were becoming official. I was only kidding when I said Don in the New toon is a player. I only get that player vibe because he is some what flirty with April in the New toon. And his flirtations are all very innocent. Also I've noticed that when ever the group encounters a female he is always the one by her side protecting her. So I guess you could say that Don is the most chivilous of the four turtles.

uh... Lotus and Karai...?

oop :o sorry you are right about that. I forgot about Lotus and Karai. I always like Lotus and Leonardo from the old toon. They just cared so much about each other. Karai and Leo...well I admit there is something there, but whether its affection or mutual respect is any ones call. Since the writters keep most of the character interaction so suble.

I think Mikey's the ultimate player--he's got a girl in every universe...except the new 'toon. What's up with that?

Yeah, you are right. Mikey does seem to get the most crushes on girls in any universe. I think it is because out of all of them he trully wants the normality of human life and be...well normal. As to why he doesn't have a one in the New toon, I've got no idea :-? In this incarnation the writters have played around with the turtles having some sort of infatuation or hinted at a slight interest in the opposite sex, except Mikey. And I don't know why, having Mikey like a girl might let him mature him a little but the writters haven't gone there. So I don't know.
