View Full Version : Anyone Worried TMNT Will Fail?

I'm not really worried, but I was just thinking about this. If TMNT is a success, that means more shows, figures, movies, publicity, etc.

But what if it fails? They could pack up everything TMNT related and not ressurect it for 20 years. And even if it is a success, how long can TMNT stay around? I don't see it having the lasting power of a Spider-Man or Batman. Hell, the movie came out the same year as "Batman" did and if I say I like TMNT, I almost feel it's a guilty pleasure even though it shouldn't be...as where Batman is just a great well known character and movie in comparison in the minds of many.

Well Even if the TMNT cartoon will fail, The Mirage comic will stay.

And I know what you mean... Most people don't know the True TMNT, only the goofy pizza eating klowns. Stil almost everyone Knows that Batman is Dark. I think the problem is the way they made the first cartoon. Because they made it goofy, thats's how most people will remember it.

Batman TAS, on the other hand, were done Dark from the start. Of course the Great 2 first movies helped the Batman's Image too. Well Now Mirage is learning from it's mistake, And is doing a Darker TMNT show.

Exactly. It's all about perception. It's like the problem facing the Muppets; people think they are old news kiddy stuff. So there is work to be done.
Do you guys remember how by 1990 TMNT was beyond mainstream? Forget Power Rangers, these guys were like sickeningly mainstream. So it is nice to see em in a new light, to where they should be.

As for Batman, IMHO its like the first TMNT...this great dark and edgy late 80's film and then a bunch of horrific 90's sequels. So yes, good to see a much different take on the TMNT cartoon, from the character designs and story arc ideas this should be pretty darn good...and what weve been wanting for 12 and a half years.

Kids today are morons, who can't sit and watch anything unless it involves brightly colored monsters tring to kill each other. If it was on Cable, then they'd have a chance but only the old fans will probly keep the TMNT alive, that ot they have to go monster of the day if they make it to next season.

I know that has little to do with the topic, but its Fox, the show will be dead after 1 season probly, so enjoy it and pray they show the end more than once

Nah, I believe the show will have some success. Probably about as much as Jackie Chan Adventures (which doesn't have a monster of the week).

Actually that Im what Im guessing too. Fox has a way of doing things that way. Well I haven't totally lost hope yet, But Im afraid that might happen.

By the way, is 4kids somehow connected to fox? If not, there is a chance it could continue on another channel.

Or the question should be... when the TMNT fail as a mainstream attraction, will you still keep the faith?

IMO, the TMNT had never failed since they first came out. Us diehard fans won't let it! We just continue chatting amongst ourselves, writing stories, drawing pictures, and reliving the old times as if nothing ever happened. :D

I'm most certainly worried the new cartoon will fail. While I hope it doesn't, there is always the chance that today's audience will think of the Ninja Turtles as passe, something that was popular a long time ago and that can't cut it in today's world.

Yeah, yeah, I know all the hardcore fans of the Ninja Turtles will tune in. I, myself, will probably check out the new cartoon just to get a feel for it. But will it have staying power?

We can profess our love for the Ninja Turtles all we want, but if the public doesn't warm up to it, our Heroes in a Halfshell are history.

Just because several of us here at the Technodrome forums want it to be a success doesn't mean millions of people around the world will want it to be a success.

Thw problem is, even if it becomes a success, It might not have a second season... Fox has made decisions like that manytimes.

Hi Gang,

The first series (season 1987 1988 1989 1990 1991 1992 1993 1994) was a very success, i remember when the TMNT exited in Italy all the child were crazy for the Turtles. They weren't publicized on TV but when i watched the first episode i loved them (i love TMNT also now).
The toys when exited in the shop without publicity on TV they ended as soon as they appeard.

I think that Movies worried pubblic and the last series of cartoon (Turtles grove, they are designed very bad) was a FLOP.

I think new cartoon series fail.
I think also that we are the last TMNT fan (we= people that were born in the years 1975 - 1987)

I don't think it will fail if they stick to the original plot of the comic. Also, if they DO make a new movie, it would be wicked kick ass if Wes Craven did it. Man, that would be the best. It would give TMNT a new meaning. Have like Krang or somethin in it. Maybe even Bacter Stockman.

It won't fail. Every time, the TMNT have proved to be very popular, if it's the cartoon, the comic books, or TNM. Why shouldn't this latest incarnation be popular? If things go like they have in the past, TMNT will soon be one of the most popular things.

Well Even if the TMNT cartoon will fail, The Mirage comic will stay.

Thats true, the comic book was around after TMNT toys & cartoons left, even if the Image series wasn't all that much like the original one, it was still a TMNT comic book.

And I know what you mean... Most people don't know the True TMNT, only the goofy pizza eating klowns. Stil almost everyone Knows that Batman is Dark. I think the problem is the way they made the first cartoon. Because they made it goofy, thats's how most people will remember it.

::nods:: Exactly. A friend of a friend that hangs out with everyone each tuesday was talking to me & a friend of mine 2 days ago. We began talking about the new TMNT cartoon show & he was really adament about it. He was like "Oh, great, another TMNT show, I'm not going to be watching that @#%$.". I showed him the new issue of ToyFare with the article about the new TMNT cartoon & explained to him that the pizza-lovin' surfer dude turtles weren't going to be in this cartoon. After looking through the issue he said it didn't sound that bad & maybe he'll give it a try.

So it's pretty true that most of the public still see them as that. Batman got turned around in the movies. The 60's show was goofy as anything, but the new movie was alot different- & darker too.

I'm most certainly worried the new cartoon will fail. While I hope it doesn't, there is always the chance that today's audience will think of the Ninja Turtles as passe, something that was popular a long time ago and that can't cut it in today's world.

I dunno...TMNT is technically an 80's thing, and alot of 80's stuff (Transformers, G.I.Joe,Masters of the Universe, Thundercats, etc.) is back & still popular. The toyline came out in 88', & it's 2003 now, so thats been like 14-15 years since it's debut.

Hey, the original TMNT toyline lasted for, what, like 5-6 years? I know they had a 5 year aniversary in 92', so they managed to stick around for 5 years & then a few years longer then that. Whats not to like about mutant animals, aliens & robots running around? Thats fun, for anybody.

I honestly think it will do well, maybe not as much as it was in the begining, but it might do well enough to surive for another 5 year anniversary in 2008. :D

I still have this nagging fear the Turtle rebirth might die out. I'm not terribly worried either because I accepted the Turtle's 'dying' on the market long ago (or at least part of me did...I still wish from time to time they were on full throttle :D )

Even if they never make another killing on the market again, I'm glad to know that there are still hundreds of loyal fans out there.

Well The only problem here is FOX. I have fate that people will like the new show, even those who hated the old one.

Just speculating, but if FOX funds 26 episodes for the first season, It could be a good sign... Well let's hope for the best.

Me too. I hope we at least get a new figure of Leatherhead, but this time he should look how he did in his 1st appearence in issue #45 of the original Mirage comic series. Like, he better be at least 8 inches long & have an articulated jaw, otherwise I'll be ticked. The early figure did not do the character justice- he was like, what, 4" long? They could at least have made him 6" long or somethin', he always looked so tiny. The figure was cool & is one of my favorites, but I'd really like to see him done a bit larger.

This show is going to flop and don't say i didn't warn you....The only way it can do well is if new young kids who have never seen the old show start to like it, as people tend to like what they first see, common human nature...There aren't many people that will be like huh? tmnt? on february 8th....I can tell you that...

I think it's gonna do really well. I've been building up a buzz among my friends, and a lot of the older kids at card tournaments that I go to. I even took my new Giant Donnie with me to show off the new look, and they all liked it. I've also gotten my nephew whos 3 hooked (he always wants to watch the first movie.) and my neice whos 9 loves the videogames.

Also, Tokka, why are you always so negative about things :-? ? Yeah, I'm new, but I've been reading the boards for a while.

here's what i think
please don't just disregard me because this is my first day here, for i do have some points to make

i think the show will do very well
like karpo_007 [can i call you karpo?], FOX worries me. foxbox seems to be airing nothing but garbage currently, and they have proven their incompetence before

TMNT has a cult following, so i don't know how many new kids will like it, but every one i tell at school has gotten excited when i tell them about it!

also, batman TAS was very well done. it wasn't as dark as batman was in the eighties, but it definately was not goofy

also, i skimmed a few of the episode synopsis [just very scantily... i want to be surprized] and it does not seem like it will have the preverbial "monster of the week" as some shows do

also, i'm pretty happy with the voice cast. leo sounds kinda corny, and april is the same person as ash ketchum, but other than that, it's pretty good

Karpo_007
01-21-2003, 04:23 PM
Yeah Fox has a pretty bad reputation in cancelling good shows... But then again, They have used a lot of money to advertaise the show, so that can be considered as a good sign. And welcome to the board, and please switch to normal text...

It doesn't bother me... And I think that 4kids own the rights to the cartoon, So if it will become popular and Fox decides to cancell it, Maybe someone else will pic it up. But It is clear that Fox does some heavy advertaising on the New show, It can be considered a good sign. I guess they figured oyt that they need atleast one kid's' show not full of crap.

Well being a big Japanese Fantasy fan I realy like Ultraman Tiga (Although the original 1966 Ultraman is much better) However they completely screwed up the dubb, their line of reasoning must be something like this: "We're loosing the kids attention spans, dubb in a lame fart joke!"
and the hero: Diago's voice is totally off
Hopefully Fox Box will lighten up on this approach, especialy for the third season: Ultraman Gaia, which is all about the end of the world, in the last epp two Ultramen battle a horde of demons that blot out the sun and a big huge angel.

Anyway back to topic: I'm just glad that we're getting 26 new eppisodes of TMNT, if we get anymore: Great! But if not I won't be disappointed, and we got some awesome new action figures, so be happy!

I saw those previews too. It seems like a lot of money is being spent to promote the new TMNT. If I was 10, and watching these previews, I would probably think that this was going to be a great cartoon, just from the preview... However, now, without any reference of the TMNT, I would think the the cartoon wasn't going to be that good. On the previews, they make it look too much like some kind of mystery show, like Scooby-Doo. I know that it won't be anything like that, because I was a turtles fan for quite a while now. I think that the cartoon will be really good, and I am very pleased that there is going to be a comback into the cartoons, just like the comics were revived.

My overall conclusion of the new TMNT cartoon is that it will be popular, because of these previews. kids will be attached to these previews, and will be sure to check out the new cartoon and be satisfied. ANd to prove that I am a big fan of the turtles, here's something that I did: I watched the FOX BOX all morning for hours last week to be sure not to miss the theme song premeire, and I also had to sit through shows that I couldn't bare.

Yeah, they ARE selling out pretty well. I hit TRU & KB toys yesterday on my usual bi-weekly toy run. TRU had a section on the end of an isle all set up for TMNT stuff. They had a few of the giant TMNT figures, a decent amount of Shell Sliders (that the name?) & Shell Cycles for $10.99 & only FIVE TMNT figures left hanging on the bare hooks. I was like "Damn...good thing I already own a Raph". They had 3 Raph's & 2 Don's left. TRU charges $6.99, which isn't bad as it's cheaper then their website.

Next stop was KB toys in the mall, whom had a alot more TMNT figures. No vehicles that I could see, but plenty of Leo's,Raph's, Don's & Mike's & even 3 Shredders (one of which I picked up, and a Mike figure too). KB toys charged $5.99 for their figures, which made me very happy as I now know the place I'll buy all my figures from (even though I only have to get Leo & Don to complete my figure collection).

I didn't even know kids still watched Saturday morning cartoons. The last time I was up that early on a Saturday, all I was were infomercials.

I think less channels have Saturday morning cartoons then say in the 80's or early 90's. I remember CBS, NBC & ABC having cartoons, then CBS stopped doing it in the mid-90's & NBC followed suit a little while after that. Then FOX started airing cartoons in the late 80's, early 90's & a while after that the WB popped up & began showing cartoons. If memory serves, the original TMNT cartoon show was aired on CBS, but might have been in sindication during it's first season.

Hey, Snailman! Nice to see you! 8)

I honestly think, that while the TMNT will probably never reach the height of popularity that they had in the early 90's, the new show has potential for at least 2 or 3, maybe even 4 seasons. Wether or not the "mainstream" catches on, the audience interested in something like this is basically strong enough to keep it around a good while. I mean, really, who watches cartoons on Saturday mornings? Kids and fans like us. I don't think Fox really expects HUGE ratings, but maybe just average ratings that any other modern cartoons get.

And anyway, if all the crap they play on other channels (Rescue Heroes, YUGI-OH, etc.) is still on after the few years they've been around, then surely the green-shelled badasses from under New York stand a chance!

But that's just my opinion.

Sounds good! Its funny, this will be the only cool show on Fox Box...wonder how Fox and 4kids feel about that? Lets see, horrific kiddy anime that gives anime a bad name, or what looks to be an unbelievably sweet concerto of shell kicking rad times?

As for a return to mainstream? Ack...I would hope not, at least not in that 1990 super kiddyfied TMNT everywhere form. Enough to greenlight a new live action film? You betcha!
