I recently got into customizing. Mostly 12" Military Figures but I'm also planning several TMNT customs. Since Warrior Rahzar wasn't released I decided to make my own furry Rahzar. He can be seen here:
Custom Rahzar (http://home.earthlink.net/~leosgal/PHOTOS/CustomRahzar.jpg)
At the moment I'm repainting an Original FootSoldier. He's completely white, once he's finished he'll probably look like the white FootSoldiers from the TMNT III Manhattan Project video game. The ones always wielding the whips. :) I'm thinking of adding some chrome paint but I haven't decided yet.
Some of the next figure's I'm planning:
- Armaggon
- Sisyphus
- Dragon Lord & Wick
- Green Triceraton from Night of The Dark Turtle
- Red Triceraton from Night of The Dark Turtle

Oh I have Splinter too but he's posed with my New TMNT line. I didn't want a loose new Splinter. His facial sculpt a little strange. Movie Star Splinter (furry version) is so cute, he kinda looks like a puppy. :)
Wow, that custom Rahzar looks great. I've tried customizing action figures, but the closest I've done is my chibi turtles and those don't move at all, so they aren't really action figures.

if anyone wants to know how, all you need to do is have an idea, then some money to buy the sculpey and the figure and the paints, and if you have talent it helps but i don't so you don't have to have talent to enjoy yourself and BOOM you're done.

These're my Image-based Turtle customs. I've been trying to post them for two days, but kept getting error messages.
Anyways, Leo, Mike and Raph are Next Mutation figures, modified as Erik Larsen dictated in the Image comic (my favorite print incarnation of the Turtles, hands down). These are my take on the Turtles as they eventually settle into their new looks post-Issues #23.
Leo's missing a hand, and is wearing a skull cap reminiscent of the pre-teenage turtle masks from Mirage Vol 1, #9. I figure after losing a hand, you'd have to go back to the beginning, and relearn the ninja arts from scratch, incorporating the diability into a modified fighting style. So it was perfect that the Next Mutation Leo had this kind of skull cap, as the Image Leo needs to step back from being the leader, and admit he needs to relearn his art. Leo's using Katana blades from G.I.Joe Extreme's Black Dragon figure, since the 88 swords didnt work well with this figure, and the ones NM Leo came with suck!
Raph is all kinds of messed up. Trading in his sais for the remnants of Shredder's armor (actually NM Dragonlord's forearm guards), Raph's still sporting the scars from his encounter with the Cyborgs in Issue #1. He's wearing an eyepatch over the useless eye, and has modified his mask to include the "Jim Lee" flap that covers most of the facial damage. At one time, I'd had him wearing a modified Resident Evil Nemesis' black trenchcoat, as an homage to the all-black suit he wore in an issue or two of the Archie series. It also helped add more distinction to he who is already the darkest of the turtles in the Image world.
Don's a combination of all 3 Jim Lee Turtles, plus parts from a bunch of Spawn figures. As the Cyborg armor settles onto him, Don tries to integrate it more fully, and wears a full-face mask to cover his armored-bits, and belnd in with his brother. Ironically, Jim Lee and the New Adventures figures both had Don in a full face mask, and I've toyed with the idea of meching out one of those someday.. but the larger size of the Jim Lee turtles works better for Don, who's definitely bigger and bulkier than his brothers in the Image book.
Mikey's a straight repaint (the book didnt last long enough for Erik to figure out how to handicap him, I guess)... but I modified his nunchucks (1988 version) and included a grappling hook for those PC parents who forced him to hangup the chucks later on in the cartoon series.

Nope. I bought some brown furry material, it's almost exactally like's MOTU's Grizzlor. Some Hobby stores and Walmart sell those small sheets of faux fur. It took me a while to find that solid brown color with long enough fur. I measured Playmate's Rahzar figure and cut out a pattern that when sewn together, would be kind of like a tight fitting suit with hood. Once I finished sewing the pattern together I put it on the figure. I poked a small hole in the belly area of the material so his chest armor can go through and stick back onto the figure. I also made small holes on the hood so Rahzar's ears can fit through them. Afterwards I trimmed the fur in several places until it looked the way it does in the photo. I also used a little Barbie comb to brush and style the fur. :D
Thanks, I really like the way he turned out too.

I'm more into punk rock these days (even more specific, punk covers of oldies, ala Me First and the Gimme Gimmes)... but there was a time I got heavy into the NYHC scene.. the honest-to-god no drinking/drugs/sex thing.
I've reformed a bit in my latter days, indulging in the drink for a while (after my fiance and I split up)... but the only thing straight-edge about me these days is the no vices thing. I don't go in for the scene.. some of that music is *really* loud ;)
As for the figures, the arm and leg wraps actually work for me. Considering I needed forearm wraps for Raph, and Leo needed that one arm bandaged, using the NM turtles allowed those add-ons to blend better into the overall uniformity of the group. I was tossing around the idea of redoing them with the new figures, but there'll be too much to mold/modify, and I'm aready doing a straight repaint set of the new figures as the Mirage turtles (all red bandanas, and energy weapons, from their Triceraton adventure in Issue #6... also as an homage to those small metal figures made available before the toy license.)
Anyway, I did these figures about two years ago, maybe more... the Image book was just ending around the time I busted open my Jim Lee figs for the Don custom that started it all. In fact, the Don figure is the oldest by at least 6 months, and he really looks it. Three repaints (the other three have softer, bendy plastic that the original paint I used on Don didn't adhere to), and two failed blackwash processes have left him looking a little crap-tastic.
If I ever try my hand at these again, I'd redo Don first... but I think I'll leave well enough alone.

alright rocksteady is just being finished painted, so is scratch. Leatherhead needs his arm fixed and then to be started painted. Then when those 3 are finished i'll move onto Bebop and finish clawful (motu).

I'm strongly considering it, although all a person would need to do is buy the 'Ninja Action' line and paint all of their bandana's dark red! Though if I did, I wouldn't go about making them that way, but still.....

Heh.. and now I take a look at this! I'm impressed too, especially with straight-edges work. Wowza! The first one I've seen do a pretty good lookin' Cyborg Don.
I myself have loads of remake ideas too (since I first did this to Breyer model horses). I hadn't done much to action fugures, but I love too. The problem is finding the time to commit, since I have more than enough other new media stuff to keep me busy. Bleargh!
The most I did was repaint the shells of, and make leather fittings and wooden weapons for a couple of the movie star TMNTs.
http://www.turtlequest.com/mikecustom.html
http://www.turtlequest.com/doncustom.html
But I always wanted to make a Cyborg Don, and then a really cool Biker Raph. I have this coil spring action Don figure that looks like he can make a good body for Cydon. Just add on some epoxy armor and paint. I was going to use the TNM Raph and motorcycle, but now that they have the new figures out, I might use those instead. Either way, I'm gonna repaint the figure entirely, maked the belt leather and make real leather chaps and possibly boots. A couple tattoos and piercings might be a nice touch too. If I'm really abitious, I might repaint the bike too.

I just made my own Custom. A Casey Jones. I used an Oz figure from the Buffy line. The badass clothes and such made it a good basis. I made a mask, painted it and all, then put in some straps and put it on Oz's head. He looks pretty cool, even if his hair is spiked up.
By the way, I saved some old shirt decales from my Jay & Silent Bob Action figures. I slapped one on the Casey fig, So now he looks kickass with an Oni Press logo. Now to find a hockey stick.

I'm planning on making a custom Shredder and Foot Soldier once I get the chance, but first I need to get some, ah, "extra parts" (for lack of a better term) to complete them. The trouble is finding a place that sells what I need cheaply.

Walmart testors brand, it's used by some of the best customizers out there. It's pretty cheap to, but make sure if you're going to buy paint to buy acrylic cuz enamel is just CRAP it leaves the paint slimey and stuff and trust me don't use it.

PWDESAI

HorseTechie
01-23-2003, 10:50 AM
The paint I used to customize Breyer model horses were the craft store acrylic paints. Of course, you have to use a couple other things with this, since it chips easy. I had to put on a white gesso primer coat so the acrylic had something to adhere too. Then after letting the acrylic coat dry, I put on a matte varnish to give it an even better protective finsih.
But.... that testors paint sounds like a better idea when it comes to repainting action figures... mmm...
xZAOx
01-23-2003, 11:13 AM
my main reason for picking up some testors was the paint the ugly brown weapons. it was a lot thinner than i was expecting, but after a few coats, it looks good!
however, then when i tried to get the turtle to hold his weapon, it just peeled off on his fingers. any tips?
PWDESAI
01-23-2003, 02:10 PM
here's a tip, don't paint the joint or anywhere that would cause friction cuz you're not gonna be able to paint that area due to peeling off.
TMNTGal
01-23-2003, 06:51 PM
I've also been using Testors brand. Seal the paint with a coat or 2 of gloss enamel overcoat. Works wonders for me. There are two kinds High Gloss and Flat Gloss. Both work great for sealing in the paint. :)

If you already haven't figured it out, it's a combination of all the primary colors, red, blue, and yellow. Adjust the amounts until you get a shade you want, and always go lighter to darker. Or you could just buy brown, if you can.

WHOA! :o
Very awesome! :D
Alot of the old TMNT figures are just begging to be "customized". Namely because the prototype pictures of the figures have like 5 or 6 more paint applications then the finished product actually did. Look at Doctor El, the mutant Elephant as an example: the prototype pictures of that toy show his feathered hat having different colored feathers, while the actual toy as all orange ones. Also, he's wareing a little cloth to cover up his "naughty bits", but the one coverin' his bum wasn't painted.
If any of you guys have some of these old figures & old cardbacks that shows how they should have been colored, bust out some paint & touch 'em up (if you want to that is).
A friend of mine who was good with a brush touched up a few of my TMNT figures, if I can get a camera & access to a scanner I'll try to show 'em to you guys. Basically he painted the straps on Monty Moose's shoulders & his Sidekick figure Bob the Beaver (who looks VERY cool now that he's not a sold tan piece of plastic) a few accessories for my Sewer Spittin' turtles, Ray Fillet's sidekick Fish Stix & alot of stuff on Dr. El.
Playmates sculptors put such detail into their figures, it's a real shame they didn't show it off more. Just look at General Trag for a prime example. That guy has so much stuff crawlin' around on him, he'll never be lonely. For an added "treat", check out the bottom of his foot : there's a squished turtle under there! Ewww! :o.

They just stand there (well, actually, Raph doesn't stand, I have to lean him up against something) looking cute and adorable. Yes, they are actual size.

WHOA! :o
Very nicely done. TMNT toys are so perfect for adding detail to via paint. One day I might touch up my Sandstorm figure as they made rips in his shirt, exposing his fur, but they never painted it. Provided I can find matching paint though.

Cool! Do you put some sort of clear-coating over what you paint to prevent it from chipping or something? I know toy companies do that with their toys, but I can never seem to reproduce the process they use. If I could, I'd be customizing my figures like crazy- I want to still be able to play with them, & if they have fragile paint on them they will most likely chip when in combat.

no, i really dont know how to prevent it. i just pose mine, so i dont really have to worry about it. when im putting the weapons in their hands, tho, i have to be really careful, or most times it will peel back the paint. if you let it set for like a day, it gets alot more "sealed" in that time. i have had any problems with anything cracking yet, and ive painted 2 bendy objects so far (casey's bag, and now ratkings belt), and none of them have cracked or anything.
i can hold the weapons and everything, and nothing seems to be falling apart with the paint. just gotta "ease" it into their hands hehe, i usually hold their hands apart, then put in the weapon, then let their hands close over it. someone here suggested putting a coat or two of enamel gloss to seal it in, and i dont have any enamel gloss. i tried the acrylic gloss and that just peeled right off when forced into one of their hands. maybe thats why they just used colored plastic in the first place?

I'll have to ask my friend what he used on the TMNT figures I let him paint, see if I can get the stuff myself.
If you have the Monty Moose figure, look at his shoulders. He has the straps molded there, but they aren't painted. My friend got paint that matched it EXACTLY & painted 'em for me. He even got a little yellow paint for the buttons. He looks kick-ass now & since he used some sort of "clear-coat" on it, it doesn't flake or chip. He did the same thing to Bob the Beaver (Monty's sidekick figure), now he looks alot better, but I think he ran out of that clear stuff so he only put it ontop of his hat. I really should ask him to come by one day & touch him up or something.

::nods:: Most likely, if they can get away with it i figure. Like, if they can get a color of plastic that matches their prototype for the toy, they'll most likely just do that. I think they only really paint stuff if they have too. Like my Sandstorm figure is wareing green pants, so the plastic that makes up his legs is green, but his left has shows a mutated-camel foot so they had to paint that to match the color of his fur on the rest of his body.
I do have a few TMNT figures who have paint on their hands & can still hold their weapons without the paint coming off though. See, toy companies have to make sure there is no paint flakes or chips, cause it could be toxic to a child if it should come off. And Figure paint does NOT come off unless you scrape the figure against concrete or do some other violent thing to it. Even when I brought my toys in the bathtub, or in the pool- the paint never came off in anyway. Thats some damn strong "clear coat" they use on their toys.
What we need to do, as customizers, is find out exactly what it is, & how it's applied. That way, our customs would be just like the real thing- and able to go for swims in the pool!

Updated, or more like the original comic book? I read somewhere that Playmates just added alot of the gross-stuff on the old Rat-King figure just to amp-up the "gross" factor of the figure. Same thing happened with General Tragg. The figure didn't look at all like his cartoon counterpart, lots of stuff on him & he wasn't even the same color.
What sucks more, is we won't even get a new General Tragg figure cause he was made by Krang & Krang won't be in the new show or toyline. They COULD make a figure similiar to General Tragg though. Like some alien that is made out of rock & just call him "Tragg" or something.
That'd be cool! :D

OH I'm thinking of making a custom up to date Mutagen Man that would fit with the new line. It would be based on the amazing drawing done by Tom Kyzivat. Here's a pic of it.
http://www.thetechnodrome.com/fanart/tomkyzivat/MutagenMan.jpg
More of his work is found in the Fan Art galleries on the main Technodrome frontpage. He's really good, and I'm hoping to do Wingnut and Krang later on down the road. Mutagen Man would take a lot of time and effort, a lot of super sculpey, and well, just a lot of everything. All I need is an extra loose Mutagen Man from the old series and possibly some spare peices from some robot looking McFarlene figure. Then I'd work from there.

Use acrylics, you can find them at craft stores or places like Wal-Mart. After they dry, hit them with a non-glossy sealer.

I like your Master Mold Hero Clix guy, I had forgotten Toy Biz made a Sentinal figure that big. I actually had thought it would have been the actual Master Mold figure that Toy Biz made, which I happen to own. It's basically Master Mold's severed head, with it's spider-legs out so it can walk around. It has a grabbing claw on an arm on one side of it's head, & a laser cannon on an arm on the other side. It can also spit out flat, sentinals that I guess you could call baby sentinals or something,.
If you can score this figure, go for it. It'd be cool to use in your Hero Clix games.

At TRU the TMNT figures are $5 which isn't bad at all and I'm thinking of buying a Raph and customizing him into a Slash. I was even thinking of going way out of my way and by being as creative as possible ..I'd try to make a Venis out of say another one of the TMNT figures...although that would require quite an over haul...heck if I do a good job on either one...would someone want me to make them one?

Ok this was said a long time ago but I just read it this morning. Later on in the day I was hunting for a few more goodies from my basement, and found 2 of the ninja turtles that flip. I thouht it was a little ironic because I had just read the post and these figs are perfect bases for mirage esk turtles. 1. they have brown elbow, rist and knee pads. 2. they have tails. 3. their faces are ridgid like the original comics. 4. they are covered with scratches to show where and tare of their shells and plastrons over the years. all they need are some new legs, to stand them up normaly and get the backs fixed. (if you have one of these you will know what I am refering too)
