I may be wrong but I've always assumed that Leo was the oldest followed by Raph, Don, and Mikey. Has Mirage ever given their ages?
Kendamu
01-28-2007, 10:14 AM
I think they were all supposed to technically be the same age in most universes. I know in the toon or whatever Leo was 16, Raph and Don were supposed to be 15, and Mikey was listed as "15 1/2".
It's been awhile, though. Maybe their ages are on the official site?
Roseangelo
01-28-2007, 11:55 AM
Well, their actual ages change a bit depending on what universe you're in.
We asked Kevin Eastman at Comic-Con one year who the second oldest was and he said it was Donatello. So the order would be Leo, Don, Raph, Mike.

I think the new flick is going with the idea that Leo is the oldest and Mikey is the youngest

I think the universal constant is that Mike is the youngest. I haven't seen or heard of an incarnation yet that has him being older than any of the others.

They're all the same age; difference in age is just something the fans make up for fun, because they never make any reference to it in any universe at all.

it differs depending on what your looking at. people here for example have pointed out instances where one turtle is pointed out as being older than the other. One of Leo's lines in the new film (according to the talking figures) has him addressing one of the other turtles as little bro. Munroe even mentioned in the talk backs that one of the reasons Mikey has blue eyes in the new flick was to make it come across that Mikey was a tad younger than the rest.

Interesting that Don is listed as 4ft. on that bio card. And their weights are all over the place where on the official website it says they are all 5'2 and 180 lbs.

This doesn't confirm they'll actually reference it; that's not gonna be known for sure 'til it actually comes out. If they make an actual reference to the turtles difffering in age in the new movie, it'll be the first time it's done in an official universe and I'll know I was mistaken; however, if that doesn't happen, then I'm not gonna change my mind.

That's what I always thought too--Leo, Don, Raph, Mike. In the Volume 4 comics, there was this part that was really indicative to me of their age--at Splinter's funeral they walked to it in that order. Does anyone who makes TMNT merchandise do their research? Basically everything is forgivable except thinking Mikey is not the youngest (and, to a slightly lesser extent, thinking Leo is not the oldest).
I always thought of Raph and Don as middle children but it seems that Raph deals with that really badly and Don deals with that pretty well. So I always figured that Don had a little bit of age on Raph that helped to boost his self-esteem.
Although in a lot of incarnations they seem to all be the same age exactly.

Hmmm. Going by those cards. Well. If Raph was supposed to be the body builder of the group, wouldn't he be the heaviest of the Turtles, and not Leo. It's got Mikey heavier than Raph for crying out loud, and I thought he was more of a gymnast build?
Rooish

Awe, don't they know the real Mikey. He's one of those lucky little sh#$%ts that can eat pizza, and ice-cream, and pork rines, and not worry about gaining an ounce because of his naturally fast metabolism? Not to mention he is so naturally talented, that he can get close to the results of Leo's stamina and skill, with half the work!:D
That's why he has all the time in the world to play games and dream of superheroes all day! It's also one of the reasons he is so carefree, because he doesn't have to worry about struggling so hard to achieve something. Mikey gets a lot of grief from some of the TMNT fans, but really, he is a much greater personality and warrior than he is given credit for. And I bet he's the one you'd want to hang around with the most too!

In my opinion, the age order makes sense. Typically, the oldest sibling(s) feel responsible for the younger one(s) and strives to please the parent. Also, the oldest siblings are much academically inclined and smart whereas the youngest is the most creative. As for Raph, he does act like a middle child by having a temper.

I don't think Raph was so much the bodybuilder of the group for those cards as they were kind of accompanying the old toon that the figures were made for.

I always thought they were the same age. They're reptiles not mamals. How many Turtle eggs does a momma Turtle lay at the same time? Does she do it in succession? Would birth order be determinded by who hatched first?
For the record, I agree with the standard Leo, Don, Raph, Mike order. Though different media do mention different orders for example the old newspaper strip says that Donny hatched last, making him the youngest in that continuity.
Rooish

You're right, Time Mistress... if they actually were from the same brood they really are all the same age, no matter in what order they hatched (that shouldn't be enough of a time difference for the birth order to effect their personalities, anyway).

Splinter may have been a normal rat when the turtles were tiny toddlers, but maybe the mutagen slowed the aging process down. And, if he was capable of mastering ninja techniques from a cage, maybe he just never was an ordinary rat...

That always bothered me so much. Everything in the entire series was more plausible to me than a pet rat learning a martial art (not just the physical part, but the spiritual and mental part, too). Furthermore, when did he learn Japanese--or English? I think maybe he was one special rat to begin with.

I believe that they are all basically the same age with only their mental age being the real factor.
I think in just about every medium the ages go Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, and Michaelangelo. The new toon seems to be the only medium so far to deviate from this age order, with Raphael being the second oldest and Don being the seond youngest.
And why the heck is Michaelangelo going to have blue eyes in the movie :ohwell: That just seems weird to do. Espically since the other turtles are all going to have black irisless eyes like they have always have. I hope mikey's blue eyes aren't going to be too noticeable in the movie because I think the turtles having colored eyes is going to be a bug out. And how does blue eyee make you appear younger? Are they doing this under the impression that blue eyes make you look more innocent or something?
Rooish
01-30-2007, 03:33 PM
It looks very strongly to me that Don, Raph and Leo all have brown eyes, not black irisless eyes. In fact, it looks from the screencaps that they have different shades of brown (Don's are the darkest and Raph's are the lightest), but I might just be seeing things. It would be cool if they all had different eye colours. I do like that they have pupils; no pupils are cool for the comics and cartoons, but movies need the expressiveness of pupils.
I think blue eyes hold a sort of innocence in them (according to many people) that the animators have monopolised on in order to make Mikey seem like the baby brother.

I also like Mikey's baby blues. I think it's a really cool move to do that. Something really different.

No, I definitely see that too. Raph in the new toon is very much Leo's right-hand Turtle, whereas Don is less assertive and mature (he's always with Mikey, after all. I'm worried the new movie will be like that, too.
Masked Ninja
01-30-2007, 07:57 PM
Yeah, I tend to cast Raph as second-oldest too, probably because he's more assertive than Don. [and in ways my family kinda matches the TMNT in that order, even though we only have 3 kids. I'm oldest (Leo), my sister is middle (her favorite is Don, but she acts a little more like Raph), and my brother is the youngest (Mikey)]
Of course, I don't mind a nonassertive Don - I prefer him that way, I think. He's not a hermit, nor is he a pushover... but at the same time he doesn't demand attention or dominance. He does his thing, by himself if he has to, and it doesn't matter because he enjoys his own company as much as that of his brothers, and the quiet is good for working. But if he was left alone for too long, he'd want some family time. And while fighting is not his favorite thing in life (as it might be for Raph), he sure can deal some damage if you tick him off.

Non assertive does not equal young. Ever.

Yeah, we know. But since it seems to at least three of us that one of the mediums has gotten the age order wrong, why can't we discuss it? Anyway, it's not so much his lack of assertiveness in the new show that makes Don seem young; it's his immaturity (as in, his gushing over girls and hanging out with Mikey), and the fact that Raph tends to take on second-in-command.

I think that's a fair proposition. I especially thought that in "Tales of Leo", Raph's monologue implied that he always figured he'd be "top turtle" because he was "biggest" and "strongest." Raph's leadership aspirations seem to imply that he was considerably close to Leo in age so that the leadership of the brotherhood was initially somewhat in doubt. Leo's superior skill, however, convinced Raph otherwise. Also, their constant rivalry and competitiveness (in the 2k3 toon at least) could be interpreted to suggest they are the closet in age.

Well, I know the early video games got it wrong (and I don't count 2K3, as there's no evidence of age being wrong) and some box backs... But why discuss it? It was a MISTAKE. Someone didn't do their job and find out the facts.
As for Don, he's not immature. Maybe he's MORE mature, liking girls. And, really... maturity is not defined by... Raph taking charge does not mean he's older. It just means he likes to be in control. That's all. We can go back and forth by saying 'Don is smarter and a really logical thinker!' (which really does signify maturity)... but it doesn't matter how the discussion goes. Fact is fact is fact. No real discussion needed.
The only discussion I'd like to have is how idiotic the people who made those mistakes are, and why they weren't corrected. I hate mistakes like. They show poor workmanship.
Sure, ya can discuss it. Doesn't change the fact that it's Leo, Don, Raph, Mike. I guess I just don't see the point. They were just mistakes.

Not really. Actually, that implies a 'younger middle child' sensibility. Most likely the third oldest. Hence, Raph.

OK, this is a double post, but it's LONG...
So here you go. They all fit right where they're supposed to.
First child (Leo): Believes must gain and hold superiority over other children.
Being right, controlling often important.
May develop competent, responsible behavior or become
very discouraged.
Sometime strives to protect and help others.
Strives to please.
Second (Don): Mediator
Even Tempered
Has Perfectionism, Logic
Dry humor, sensitivity
Middle (Raph): Has neither rights of oldest nor privileges of youngest.
Feels life is unfair.
Feels unloved, left out, "squeezed."
Feels doesn't have place in family.
Becomes discouraged and "problem child" or elevates self by pushing down other siblings.
Is more competitive, wants to overtake older child.
May become a rebel or try to outdo everyone. Competition can deteriorate into rivalry.
Baby (Mike): Expects others to do things, make decisions, take
responsibility.
Feels smallest and weakest. May not be taken seriously
Remains "The Baby." Places others in service.
Can be irresponsible
They all fit.

Oh, I totally agree on Pete's official order. Leo, Don, Raph, Mike.
Hm... I guess I see Don and Raph's placements as "controversial" in the new show (I don't think indiscriminate crushes on every girl encountered is very mature, but I don't think angry rebelliousness is very mature either), whereas in the other versions of the TMNT I never saw much straying from the "proper" age order that Peter Laird gave. What I see in the new toon gives me the impression that the writers think Raph is older than Don. That bothers me a lot. I guess I was trying to discuss that... how the new 'toon writers (who are supposedly in close collaberation with Peter Laird) could get it wrong. Which is what you seem to want to discuss (although you think they wrote Don as second oldest, anyway). So yay for being on the same page?
Edit: Just read your second post. Very very informative. It's just that Don's so starry-eyed and he needs saving a lot in the new show (like in "Outbreak") that sometimes I feel that the show gets it wrong.

No worries, I wasn't very clear. :) I just hope they get it right in the upcoming movie, as sometimes in the new show I feel they have it wrong. I mean, Kevin Munroe's loved the TMNT since the original comics, so I think he should have a feel for their ages. That birth order thing you posted was pretty creepily bang-on. I'm a youngest child, and although I like to think I'm not too annoying and helpess, I think I identify most with Mikey because of it. I'm also a second child, though--as in I have only one sibling.

Reading Joe Dawn's despcription of some basic formula someone got together. Well, I never met a family that came down to that science.
I think blue eyes hold a sort of innocence in them (according to many people) that the animators have monopolised on in order to make Mikey seem like the baby brother.
thats pretty much why they gave Mikey blue eyes. Munroe explained it in the Front Line thread when I asked him: it unconsciously makes him look a bit more innocent and thus a bit younger than the rest.
as for how good or bad it may look all you have to do is look at the images we have seen of Mikey from the film: they all have him with blue eyes:

I for one love Mikey's blue eyes. And they look great against his orange mask... my two favorite colors on one turtle. :D (at least it's not Leo with orange eyes, right? ack, that'd be scary.)
They're the normal type of blue, too, not the almost-clear evil genius kind of blue. Though that blue ain't bad either.

Nope, you're not. But I also thought he and Raph could have used a couple of hugs in the other movies as well.

I hear that, my friend.
I think it's pretty cool that they gave Mikey blue eyes. Masked Ninja, correct me if I'm wrong, but blue and orange are complementary colours, right? Like they're the most contrasting? It's certainly a striking and cool choice of colour.

The first pic is a little fuzzy and the last two are to dark for me to tell. though the second pic where Mikey is looking suprised gives us a pretty good shot of his eyes. They do look nice on him and its not so obvious that you would bug out on them. I guess they do make him look younger :ohwell: . And i am relieved that his eyes are a more normal blue color instead of super light ice blue like I feared, and the blue of his eyes does set off his orange mask well. Good coloring choices. His blue eyes against orange mask makes him look rather striking.

Another reason why it works: for someone like Mike who tends to be a bit flashy and seems to stand out amongst the others the blue eyes and the resulting striking look speaks volumes

Anyhow, not sure what I feel about the blue. I definitely didn't like them at first... but whatever.

what about cutesy?
Sage Ninja

I like cutsey just so long as its not over done to the point where it become sickening, or done to the point that you have a hard time taking the character seriously.
I mean, if they make it seem Mikey is too young and cute, wouldn't that put at odds his whole "dark skilled ninja that lives in the shadows" nuance that he shares with all his brothers? :ohwell:

the blue eyes are just to make you look at him and subconsciously think that he looks a bit younger and a bit more innocent than the others (it also makes him stand out a bit if you look at the eyes, which is great for someone flashy like Mike). innocent does'nt have to mean cutesy. it can refer to the fact that Mikey likes to have fun above all and him arguably being one of the nicest turtles. it kind of reminds me of Superman and his blue eyes in a way. it makes him stand out and kind of reflects his otherwordly heritage as well as helps in his nice guy, and approachable demeanor, even though we know he can whoop ass if he needs to. blue eyes does'nt mean he can't brawl nor puts at odds the fact that he's a ninja, because we know he can brawl and that he is potentially dangerous in a fight, its just a small design change that can help physically show those nice guy/younger brother qualities of Mikey's personality.

Hmm, that's really true, johnnyblaze. Cutesy can be annoying, especially if the character is not actually a nice person, but I think the cuteness of Mikey's design comes from the fact that he looks more innocent, and gentler, and younger... it makes his bros (and the audience) feel protective of him. But he can still kick butt, which will make him all the more cool.

all good points. Ok i'm sold! I like Michaelangelo's blue eyes now. I think the fact that Michaelangelo can be laid back and easy going, and all so skilled and dangerous creates a great paradox. I'd also like to point out that blue eyes can also be wickedly sexy and mysterious as well as pure and innocent. Just look at Casey Jones in New series, i really like his blue eyes, and its probably his best feature ;)
