We now have a title for Harry Potter VII. But if you want to find out for yourself, visit J.K. Rowling's Web site and play a little game of hangman.
Rowling's U.S. publisher, Scholastic Inc., released a brief statement Thursday announcing the name of the world's most anticipated children's book, the finale to her phenomenally popular fantasy series.
No publication date or other details were offered. Rowling is still working on the book, she explained on her Web site in an entry posted early Thursday.
"I'm now writing scenes that have been planned, in some cases, for a dozen years or even more," she wrote. "I don't think anyone who has not been in a similar situation can possibly know how this feels: I am alternately elated and overwrought. I both want, and don't want, to finish this book (don't worry, I will.)"
Meanwhile, she set up a test for her Potter fans.
If you go to jkrowling.com, click on the eraser and you will be taken to a room — you'll see a window, a door and a mirror.
In the mirror, you'll see a hallway. Click on the farthest doorknob and look for the Christmas tree. They click on the center of the door next to the mirror and a wreath appears. Then click on the top of the mirror and you'll see a garland.
Look for a cobweb next to the door. Click on it, and it will disappear. Now, look at the chimes in the window. Click on the second chime to the right, and hold it down. The chime will turn into the key, which opens the door. Click on the wrapped gift behind the door, then click on it again and figure out the title yourself by playing a game of hangman.
Or you can just take Scholastic's word for it: "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows."

Yay!! I can't wait for this. They've had it on pre-order already at a store near me.
It comes out on 7/7/07, yes? That's the perfect date.
By the way, I LOVE J.K.'s site. It's so awesome, and especially for her fans!

I've heard the 7/7/07 rumor myself, but there's no official date yet. If she's still writing it (which the press releases today claim she is), it'll be tough for them to hit that date. (From what I understand they need at least 6 months between the completion of the manuscript and the publication date.)

Exactly how I see it. I want to read it so bad, and I know I'll be reading it, not being able to wait for the end... But I do dread it, too. It'll be sad. I love these books. Heck, I even have a picture of me in England AT Platform 9 3/4. (There actually IS one!) :)

It's a shame this will be the last one, it feels unreal for the series to end. I actually thought each book was even better than the one before it, so I have no doubts about this one. Rowling is one hell of a storyteller, I'm sure she has something great in store.
I hope Harry doesn't die though...
Pretty neat little game there....i also love the series and so dont want it to end...im also a fan of the movies but those guys are getting so old, its starting to get a lil unbelievable...regardless, i'll be picking this up day 1 if possible...

Yeah, though... Ok, I LIKE Harry ok, but I don't love him as a character. In fact, in book 5 he annoyed the crap outta me. Ron and Hermione's where it's at.
That being said...
I really don't have an opinion on if Harry dies or not. It'd be nice if he didn't, but if he does... It'd be a heck of a shocker and lesson to the readers. It may have the potential of making it better in some ways. The possibilities are endless. Juuuust as long as Ron and Hermione live, I'm all good.
Hopefully, more Ron and Hermione goodness so the non-believers will FINALLY after extreme hinting (and even TELLING) in 6 books, will shut up. :)

Yeah, I won't really mind if he does die, as long as the story is good. I'd just prefer it if he lived after all 'we' have been through. As for others dying, I think Rowling said 'someone who shouldn't die, dies', or something like that. And we all know she has no problems killing characters off. :( Man, I can't wait for this book.
Oh, and I'm not really interested in the romance stuff myself, but after book six it's pretty obvious Ron and Hermione wind up together, so no worries there.

Another interesting thing. The title of the book was announced on the Winter Solstice... and... In Order of the Pheonix, it states ' "...at the solstice will come a new... and none will come after..." '
Cool, huh? She thinks of everything.
Sheesh...that is pretty neat i guess...
I wonder what she'll do after the series ends...more books or call it day and just sit around and count her bazillions...?
Kinda sad, but I'm not that curious about whether Harry will live through the final book. I just want to know what side Snape is on and who he's scamming. There's a theory floating that Dumbledore was going to die anyway, even before he took Harry on that fool's errand. Throughout the books, Snape has been set up as a healer to rival any other, but is that the real reason Dumbledore asked for him after the poisoning?

It is very neat. She's so awesome.
After this last book, she's not writing any more Harry Potter books; at least, not for money. They only thing she was thinking of doing is doing an encyclopedia of sorts of all the characters and ideas that didn't make it in the books for charity.
Which, I think will be awesome. I'd love that.

I dunno... some of the 'conjecture' is based on things JKR has said about the end of the series, which I'd call spoiler material. *shrug*
Plus we've had... disagreements... on this board about people posting their theories out in the open, especially if the theories turn out to be close to correct.

Truly. I don't know how I'm going to get to read the last book before hearing about it by accident.
I've been very lucky in this regard. I almost had the 6th book spoiled for me though. Right when I bought it, my sister picked it up and flipped the pages, only to come across the biggest part of the book, and reading a key line about said part, she knew Snape killed Dumbledore, I could tell by the look on her face that she had just ruined the book for herself. I grabbed my book and ran to the cash, ears covered and head down, payed for it and got out as quick as possible. I then avoided contact with her for the weekend it took me to read it.

"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," the last of seven installments of the boy wizard's adventures, will be published July 21, author J.K. Rowling said Thursday.
Rowling announced the publication date on her Web site.
Bloomsbury, her British publisher, said it would publish a children's hardback edition, an adult hardback, a special gift edition and an audio book on the same day.
Scholastic Children's Books, the U.S. publisher, said it would offer a hardback edition at a suggested retail price of $34.99, a deluxe edition at $65.00 and a reinforced library edition at $39.99.
Bloomsbury noted that this year is the 10th anniversary of the publication of the first "Harry Potter" book in the phenomenally successful series.
The "Potter" books have sold 325 million copies worldwide and been translated into 64 languages, Bloomsbury said.
The last book, "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," sold 2,009,574 copies in Britain on the first day of its release, Bloomsbury said.
The Potter franchise is so important to the company's earnings that it announced the publication to the London Stock Exchange.
Bloomsbury shares were up 2.2 percent to $4.40 after the announcement.

On her official Web site, Rowling wrote about her progress on the book, with a hint that at least two characters will die.
I heard this on the radio going to school as well. This really raises a whole lot of possibilites to who's going to die. I really hope Ron, Hermione, and Hagrid will still survive. Harry...well, it's up to J.K. if she lets him survive or not. Still, if he dies, I'm sure it will be for a noble cause :)

Since the book is offically published on the 21st of July, I think they did that knowing well that a couple of characters would die, and the Order of the Phoneix was being released to theaters in early July, so they probably did that so fans can first see the fifth installment on the big screen, and then read the seventh book, and be less disappointed than they would be if they released close together.

Based on this number, I speculate that: Ron and Snape will die.
Or maybe McGonagall.

Actually...
I have read in recent interviews that it is now more than two.
I am not speculating on whom, though.. it was too easy to tell going into Half-Blood Prince that Dumbledore was going to die (although I didn't see Snape doing it happening, so JK gets points from me for that), which made it less sad, so I'm just gonna go into the new book as ignorant as possible. 8)

Damn thing was leaked. I read the whole thing.
Dobby, Snape, Burbage, Scrimgouer, Hedwig, Wormtail, Moody, Voldermort all die. Potter marries Ginny. Usual "happy ending" stuff with a bit of stunt shock deaths thrown in for good measure.
Voldermort's death? Turns out that the elder wand's true master was Draco, whom Harry beasted for another wand (Voldermort had the real deal handed to him), Dumbledore had ordered Snape to kill him so the wand would have no master once he died, undefeated, but Draco took the wand against Dumbledore's wishes. The wand detects Potter is it's true master after defeating Draco and kills Volermort.

Thanks for the link, Zarius (although it's kind of hard to read). I'm really disappointed in the person who scanned the book and put it up in the first place, though. I mean, the secret is out and the magic is spoiled, and although most people will only spoil it for themselves deliberately, a lot of people may overhear what happens before they've read it. And that would be hugely hurtful to many fans. I feel very bad for Rowling, who has written such a great series for us and who wanted a perfect release of her finale, and I feel bad for all the fans who care about it so much but will have it given away to them before they read it. The guy who scanned the book is a sociopath and should die. ;)
Jo, I suggest you bring an iPod or discman or whatever to the bookstore at midnight, turn up the music loud, and then you won't be able to hear anyone shout out the ending.

The guy who scanned the book is a sociopath and should die. ;)g.
Most of the time, Potter fans say that WITHOUT a reassuring smilie.:)
Which goes to explaining why so many like to spoil Potter, to many it's a flash-in-the-pan franchise that too many people (and this is excluding the younger readers) take too seriously. They attach themselves to the characters to such an extent, they think or choose to beleive there real
The saner fans are fine, they see the books for what they are, the story and the sensible direction they go in, the others are the ones who truley betray Rowling and deserve everything they get.
Rowling is a superb writer and her works have reinvigorated interest in sorcery and books in ways many may never see surpassed for a long time all the same.

Seriously though, its pretty unfair, I like the books I like the characters and some twunk comes along and ruins it all for people. How did he get a copy of the book anyway, I mean it was published in the dark, shops are having workers searches to make sure they dont steal a copy or pages.
As much as I enjoy the books though. It'll be nice to see the end of it. If they just went on forever it'd get boring.

Exactly, it's just a story. For completists who prefer reading the books, knowing the spoilers would prove just as much a draw as the cliffhanger of the last one. This won't affect sales, just the mystery of what comes next.
That's what happens with popular franchises, every detail is leaked. I don't see anyone calling to shut down "ain't it cool news" which can spoil everything with a mere headline for a movie or television show. People discuss movie endings months before they have even seen the movie too without remorse or greif that it's been "spoiled" for others.

Finished it earlier today...
Ok so Harry in fact was a horcrux because a piece of Voldemorts soul was blasted into Harry. In Snapes memry Dumbledore wanted Snape to tell Harry the truth and that Voldemort had to kill him. So blah blah blah, Harry sacrifices himself. But he doesn't actually die because according to Dumbledore he only "had to mean it" or "be willing" or something. I still don't really understand how Voldemorts soul inside Harry was destroyed but Harry still survived.
I'll be reading those last few chapters over again later(no time right now), it's just bothering me.

Finished it!!!
Wow, a lot of deaths... but aside from that, a very content ending. Yay!!
Just finished it today as well...and...I'm a bit disheartened...
REMUS!!! WHY?!!!!!!!!!!!!! *brakes down*
Well, pretty much all of my favorite characters died in this book. Which sucked. I was starting to like Snape as well... *sighs* At least I was happy looking into his memories, though. Definately some "aw" worthy moments, at least.
Out of all of the deaths in the book, I really didn't see the need for Lupin, Tonks, Fred, Dobby, or Hedwig to die. When Fred was killed, I could just feel that fine line snap with some of my tolerance for Rowling. She cried when she wrote out Sirius, and loved each character dearly, so why the hell did she kill everyone?! *goes into a fully fledged rant*
But the book itself...I loved it. So many unanswered questions put to rest, at least. And we all now know why the title of the last book is the "Deathly Hallows". Once you know the story, the title is very fitting *nods*. However, after the death of Fred things seemed to go downhill for me. I was enjoying myself until I realized quite a few of the supporting characters that were deeply loved by everyone were killed off. Well, not Wormtail. Nearly everyone I talk to hates him :ohwell:
Oh, and I loved Voldemort in this book. You really get inside his head this time, and sort of figure out how he ticks, which I loved. His death was fairly good, in my opinion. Good, but not great. I guess I expected him to go out with a bit more of a "BANG"... Still, it kind of fitted with him, so I was happy.
The ending, as well, good but not great. I guess I didn't like how Harry had named his kids after Dumbledore and his parents. Not a single original name among the three. Ah well. At least we know all is fine in the world...until something is revealed. Like Voldemort had a one night stand and had a long lost son or something. Meh.
Over all, I'd say "read it" to anyone. I may seem to be hitting the book hard here, but I enjoyed it all the same. It's seriously addicting ;)

The ending bothered me, it seemed like she finished it. THen just devided to writr thi on a whim. I would have liked to see what Harry is doing with his life. If he actually ended up being an Auror, if there was still Dark magic or are they now living in a world of fluffy kittens and rainbows. Mostly I wanted to see how George was coping with losing a twin, how the weaslys were coping with losing a son, what it was like for Harry raising his godson at only 17. All that stuff.
"Figure it out yourself" Or is that all the the stuff we'll see on fanfic.net in a few weeks time.
Oh yeah and
Even though noone liked them, what happend to the dursleys? Did they move bad to Privet Drive?

I've just finished it, I thought it was brilliant. The middle part dragged a little and some of the deaths really weren't necessary but overall I'm happy and sad at the same time. Which is a good thing!
Oh and Snape is my hero! His story was almost exactly as I had guessed.
EDIT: The more I think about it, the more unnecessary all the deaths seem to me. Lupin AND Tonks??!! Why??!!

Well, I think Lupin was killed so that all of the Marauders would be with Harry when he turned the stone as he entered the Forest. I think Tonks was killed to put little Teddy into the same position as Harry was at an early age; without parents and only with a godfather (although it sounds like he might have been raised by his grandmother). Not that this later bit was expanded on at all.

I think Tonks was killed to put little Teddy into the same position as Harry was at an early age; without parents and only with a godfather (although it sounds like he might have been raised by his grandmother). Not that this later bit was expanded on at all.
I thought of that, too but it doesn't really make it any better. Especially since we don't even know who killed them. Lupin was a fan favourite character, he could have been given a more spectacular death.

I agree. He was loved by many and we never even got to see his death. Or have it described to us like Mad-Eye's death. And I loved Tonks as well, so it just made me feel horrible. And the worst part was that I missed their deaths. It's blink and you miss it stuff. Wormtail got a better death than Lupin in terms of writing.
Now that I think about it...it never was really mentioned how Lupin and Tonks died, did it? Ugh, this is making me feel worse now...

I'm just thankful Lupin's death was referenced later, otherwise I would have never known it would have happened. But he really deserved more than a single sentence. Harry was good friends with him, and loved him as a teacher in "Prisoner of Azkaban"...so I was kind of shocked he didn't make more of a deal out of it.
And Snape's death...it's was okay. Like you said, a bit pathetic, but it was okay. I was half expecting him to kill the snake before he died, though. It would have made him seem less...weak, maybe? I don't know...but it would have made him seem stronger to me, at least. At least his death was made up with an excellent chapter on his memories.

Wow....that was an interesting read. J.K sure does love killing people off.
Here's the death list (I wrote em down as I was reading the book since I have a friend who doesn't wanna read it...just wants to know who dies. )
Prof. Charity Burbage - Muggle History Teacher. I didn't remember her at all so her death was just a meh
Hedwig the Owl - Gods I was pissed!! Hedwig was one of my fave characters!!! :(
Mad Eye Moody: Didn't care for the character so I wasn't saddened by his death
Scrimgour: Meh
Dobby: Gah!! I was actually crying when he died. At least he died a hero.
Wormtail: Didn't care for him
Crabbe: meh
Fred Weasley: How rude of her to kill him off
Snape: An honorable death!
Remus and Tonks Lupin: Geesh...for such integral characters their deaths were put in the background. :/
Colin Creevy: Meh
Bellatrix: GOOO Mrs Weasley!! "Not my daughter you bitch!!" Loved it!
Gregorovitch the wand maker: Sad minor character death there
Bathilda: She sounded like an interesting character
Ted Tonks: Darned Snatchers!! I liked him
Dirk Creswell: Didn't know him much but he was likeable
Gornuk: Darned snatchers...those Goblins are funky lookin
Grindelwald: Yes...name an evil man after a Swiss Ski Resort...good idea Rowling...
Nagini the snake: Darned thing killed Snape....deserved to die.
Voldemort: His death was like... "Wait? Did he just?...yea...I guess he did..."
And apperantly 50 other characters....yeesh
And then we have the ending:
Ok.. 19 years later...fun... Harry is married to Ginny...aww....and they have 3 kids... Lily, James, and Albus Severus. Great of Harry to name his son after Dumbledore and Snape. :D
Ron and Hermione got together and produced an R and an H of their own.... Rose and Hugo....
And Draco's son... Scorpius?! Im sorry when I hear the name Scorpius I emediatly think of the character in Farscape.
The ending kinda left room for more books. The adventures of Albus Potter!
There was one thing in the book that confused me. The dates given of the deaths of James and Lily Potter is that of Oct. 1981....but that would have made Harry 27 and not 17!! WTF?! Was that just an error?? I mean come on...he was 11 when the series started in 1997! :-? And Im guessing we're supposed to believe the series is set in the past cuz Teddy Lupin's bio at Wikipedia says he was born in 1998. Weird. :ohwell: [/I]

Exactly. If you go back to Chamber of Secrets and do the math concerning Nearly Headless Nick's Deathday party you'll see that the story takes place in the early 90s.

Indeed, the books are in the past, not 'now'.
And I am giddily happy at finishing reading. I thought the deaths weren't at all 'unspectacular'... this was plain out war. Not everything had to be highly overdone. I think it had better impact this way.
There's so much to comment on! I'll have to make multiple posts.
I thought that Snape's story was fantastic, though not unexpected. I also just assumed that Teddy was raised by the grandmother. It was all wonderfully done, and it was my favorite, possibly, because it was mostly just Ron, Hermione and Harry.. and not alot of the background characters, especially at the beginning. I was totally OK with that!
And who did not just love Ron and Hermione?? Though, I found some of the things to be easily guessed, who cares? It was completely brilliant!
But, of course, we all want more. It's what all great fans (and great authors inspire) want.

I finished the book on Saturday but I haven't been on here to write anything.
I have never cried so much through one book. All I kept thinking is why is she killing off all the characters like Hedwig even?! I understand it had to be that way concerning some of the characters by also poor Fred! I just kept thinking "What is George going to do?"
-The book was pretty amazing but now I am thinking how much they are going to have to tone it down for a film, at least I wonder how kids are going to react to all the torturing and blood and deaths happening to their favorite characters.
-The biggest shock for me was that Dumbledore was actually going to die and how well he and Snape played it off.
-Dumbledore's past surprised me a bit and it definitely humanized him.
-I like the Legend of the Deathly Hallows although it all came up kinda quick and it became a bit much with all the Horcrux's.
-Snape's memories really made me sympathize for him and finding out how much he cared for Lilly and in fact for Harry was really touching
-Oh and GO MOLLY! I am so glad she got to kick some butt in the end and speaking of butt kicking way to step up Neville!!

The Teddy issue confused me a bit but I didn't think of Grandma because after all she did loose her husband didn't she? He was killed in the quest to hunt down the wizards who weren't pureblood?
I LOVED Harry's reaction to Ron and Hermione's kiss, "Does it have to be now?" LMAO
I wasn't sure that I found the Epilogue that neccessary, I think I would have like it to be less time between. Of course she left it wide open for some blanks to be filled...anyone else think maybe???

Finished it today. Loved it. I didn't want to finish it, so as slow of a reader as I already am, I slowed myself down even more to absorb everything.
I cried my eyes out reading "Where the Red Fern Grows" years ago. It's the only other time I cried at a book, and then I only cried at the end over one event. Then I read HP7.
I cried when Fred died. It was the middle of the night and I couldn't go any further. I read the next page to make sure it was true, then went to sleep. I was afraid of who would die next and I didn't want to have to deal with that right then on top of Fred's death. As others have said, poor George! Although I was consoled a bit later when George and Lee Jordan are working together -- they're close friends, too, and I see them as mischief partners, so it's not like George is all alone.
Since I went to bed, the deaths weren't stacked up as much. I had recovered some from Fred's death when I read about Tonks and Lupin. I just finished, but I already can't remember -- what was Harry doing when he saw Tonks and Lupin? Wasn't he heading up to the pensieve? Maybe he was so focused on his task, and so tired and numb from everything that had already happened, that he couldn't really take it at the time and couldn't really apply more thought to their deaths.
I cried through a good portion of the end of the book, especially Harry's I've-got-to-go-die thoughts. I think there was a 50-page span where I had to keep wiping my eyes. I've never read so many moments in one book that made me cry. I think once the water started flowing, it was harder to stop.
Snape's story was so heart-wrenching. For a while my brother and I have been trying to figure out who had the saddest life. Harry's an obvious candidate, with the dead parents and godfather, and the constant threat of death. I favored Sirius, what with having his family hate him, his best friend betrayed and himself framed, spending I can't remember how long in Azkaban, and unable to protect Harry like I think he wanted. Neville was the third choice, having parents tortured into insanity. I now think Snape had quite possibly the saddest life. From the brief glimpse we got, it doesn't seem his parents were the best. He loved Lily beyond anything else, and it tore him up knowing that she was in danger and knowing that it wasn't stopped -- and it was his fault. You read the book, you know how sad that was.
I agree that the epilogue could have been less than 19 years in the future. I think 5 or 10 years would have been fine. I hope George has a son named Fred.

Yea.. I cried the most over Dobby and a bit over Hedwig. But I was on pins and needles the entire time wondering who'd be next. Near the end I at one point thought Hagrid had been killed by those Spiders...but breathed a sigh of releif when Harry spotted him chained in the forest.

Yeah, books don't usually make me cry, but that one definitely did. It was frigging amazing, though. I loved it to pieces.
All I can say is, thank God thank God that Harry and Ron and Hermione lived. Snape's death was painful beyond belief for me, and his looking into Harry's eyes to see Lily ... and also to show that he didn't fully despise Harry, I presume ... poor poor Snape. LONG LIVE SEVERUS SNAPE. And what the hell happened with Dumbledore? He used Harry. Except he loved him. What a sketchy wizard. ;)
I was crying for the final 150 pages. Especially Harry's last walk. And Hagrid carrying Harry. And Snape's death. And Harry's meeting with Dumbledore, and that pathetic creepy baby. And the Hufflepuffs' loyalty.
I agree that some of the deaths were pointless and we could have done without them. Dobby's was well-done, and Moody at least got some recognition, but Fred and Remus and Tonks just ... were dead. I mean WTF? Didn't Harry convince Remus to go back to Tonks and the baby so that it could have parents? And then they both ditch the baby and die. Ouch. Also, I definitely wish that George had gotten a line or two about Fred's death. What will they ever do without each other?
I like that pretty much everyone was mentioned by the end, and that Luna and Neville and Ron and Hermione and McGonagall and many others all got to do really cool things. I felt it was kind of annoying how everyone was hooking up left right and centre, but oh well. I'm glad Ron and Hermione ended up together, of course. It also bothered me that not a single Slytherin fought with Harry at the end, and the goblin was such a little bitch. Why prove sterotypes when she could break them? And it also did bother me a bit that none of the good guys were killing any of the bad guys, although I understand their pacifism. But like, sure, Stun the werewolf. When it wakes up, it will eat you, but who cares?
A couple questions, though, and forgive me if I've missed the point. Why did Mrs. Weasely get to kill Bellatrix? It was cool, but didn't Harry and Neville have more of a vendetta against her?
And why was Dumbledore's death such a big loss if Harry can talk to him in a portrait? It's not really Dumbledore, is it? The HP world's spirituality confuses me.

I had heard that two characters died in the book, but I think that was a misinterpretation of one character getting a reprieve at the expense of two others. Before the book came out someone had the thought that maybe the reprieve was one of the Weasleys, meaning that the two to die would be the twins. Given what little pre-book information I allowed myself, that made a lot of sense. By the Hogwarts battle, no one had really died in pairs (I didn't count Hedwig and Moody because I couldn't see why the owl dying would partially replace another character). When Fred and George volunteered to take care of the secret entrance tunnels they knew about, I was sure they were going to die. Then we see Percy and Fred, but no George (and no mention of anything bad happening to George), so I felt that the twins were reasonably safe for the moment. Then, about a paragraph later, Fred's dead. She spells it out clear as day, yet I read the beginning of the next chapter to make sure.

A friend of mine said that Arthur Weasley was spared in Order of the Phoenix (I'm pretty sure he got that from a source that got it straight from JKR's mouth). This same friend then theorizes that Arthur was spared, but Lupin and Tonks were killed off unexpectedly. He says that because JKR probably wanted Lupin to walk with James, Lily, and Sirius behind him when he marched to face his "death."
Oh, and I agree with the other posters. Percy should have died. His redemption was rushed and lousy. Just tacked on.

The Auror office probably isn't as bustling "now" as it was when Harry was going through Hogwarts, but I think there would always be dark wizards to fight. I picture the Aurors going after the wizarding equivalent of America's Most Wanted and stuff.
What I find weird is that Harry announces that he's the master of the Elder Wand when he defeats Voldemort... yet he expects to be able to die a peaceful, natural death? Apparently all it would take is for someone to jump out at him, yell "Expelliarmus!" and then figure out a way to get the wand. "All was well." -- Really? No one wants that wand?
Or the Reserection Stone? Harry just dropped it in the Forbidden Forest and left it there. What's to stop someone from picking it up? Man, now there are some really loose ends now...
Courk

IIRC, the only people who know even the approximate location of the Resurrection Stone are Harry, Ron, Hermione, and picture Dumbledore. Harry didn't announce to everyone that he had it -- and it's in the middle of the Forbidden Forest. Despite the fact that Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Hagrid spend a good chunk of time throughout the series in the forest, most people don't typically wander through it. The ring is a small object, too, it'd be easily missed if you're not looking for it. In order to find it, someone would need to be looking for it, know it was set in a ring and is now cracked, then know Harry had it at some point, and that Harry dropped it in the Forbidden Forest.
It's not impossible for someone to find the Resurrection Stone, but it'd be pretty difficult. With the Elder Wand, once someone disarms Harry and realizes that the wand he was holding was Phoenix feather and holly, they just have to reason what he would have done with the Elder Wand. I don't think it'd be that hard to figure out he put it back with Dumbledore.

I just finished reading it. Wow, that was great! I can't wait to see this one translated onto the big screen.
This is easily my favorite book.
Unlike a lot of people here apparently, the deaths in this final book didn't annoy me.
Yeah, they were great characters that will be missed, but this was war. People die, either in a blaze of glory or too quick to be noticed right away.
It's war, people die for no good reason because that's life.
I loved all of the character development throughout this book for all the main characters: Dumbledore, Snape (who seemed to love Harry, despite his hate toward the boy's father), Ron, Dobby, Draco and his folks (kind of)....
I loved how we got to see more into Dumbledore's life, what was true and what wasn't.
Harry's death (he had kind of died for a moment there to me) and revival, the showdown between him and Tom Riddle, the whole blasted book was amazing!
Rowling is one hell of a writer!

Snape devoted his life to protecting Harry because he loved Lily and was racked with guilt over her death. His motives were basically selfish. He didn't love Harry in the least. In fact, he hated him because he acted almost exactly like James, and that while he treated him like crap for 6 years, though he was protecting him behind his back.

I agree that Snape didn't love Harry, but I don't quite think hate is appropriate, either. Harry hates Voldemort and really, really doesn't like the Malfoys. The difference there is that Harry's entirely willing to kill Voldemort, but goes out of his way to save Draco.
Snape really really really doesn't like Harry, especially the parts that are reminiscent of James, but the fact that he's willing to protect Harry, whatever his motivation, shows that he doesn't hate Harry. No matter how much Harry acts like James, I don't think Snape would ever been capable of truly hating Lily's child.
I love Snape's selfishness. He's not evil, but he's far from good. He asks Dumbledore to protect Lily and 'oh, yeah, I guess you can try to protect her family.' That was an obvious case of selfishness -- he only warned Dumbledore because Snape would gain Lily's life. His selfish reasons for protecting Harry afterwards tie in so nicely to show how Snape's not evil like Voldemort -- Snape was actually capable of showing remorse.
I love that Alan Rickman plays Snape. The whole "The Prince's Tale" chapter needs to be in the movie.

I'm not really sure in what way Harry acted like James, though. I think, as Dumbledore said, Snape was just seeing what he expected to see. Harry was never arrogant and was never a bully. Sometimes he was angsty, which was annoying. But anyway, Snape himself was a bit of a bully.

In Deathly Hallows, it describes the scene when Harry's parents die and Voldemort attempts to kill Harry. It implies, I believe, that Harry saw his mother die, because it describes the flash of green light, and it says that Harry starts crying when he then realizes Voldemort isn't his dad. So, why was he not able to see the thestrals until he saw Cedric die?

"Harry has never seen the Thestrals pulling the school carriages before, but he has witnessed death several times: his mother and Cedric. Why didn't he see the Thestrals before? Rowling has answered that question in the Royal Albert Hall interview (RAH) Thursday June 26, 2003. She said that it takes a while for a death to be processed, to be accepted. Harry hadn't yet come to that point with Cedric's death at the end of the last school year. He was too young to understand his mother's death and so that never registered in the same way."

*E* I've noticed that a lot of people were disappointed by how the deaths of major characters like Fred and Lupin happened 'offscreen' and without any buildup. I actually appreciated the sobreity, and felt that dramatizing the deaths would only have cheapened them. This was war after all, not every casualty can be accompanied by sad music and slow-motion. Having them die without warning added to the reality and gravity of the situation.

I actually appreciated the sobreity, and felt that dramatizing the deaths would only have cheapened them. This was war after all, not every casualty can be accompanied by sad music and slow-motion. Having them die without warning added to the reality and gravity of the situation.
You're right about the deaths, you bring up a good point.

I love how I said that exact thing on page 4 and no one noticed. :P
I thought Fred's death scene was awesome because it was so unexpected at that point. Only Tonks and Lupin pissed me off a little because we got nothing (at least Rowling told us who killed them in that chat).
Well said. I still hate Fred's death, but now that I've read it again, I think that he couldn't have asked for a better death. Now that I think of it, it might be the best death in the book (I just loved that "ghost of his last laugh" line). What I wanted with Tonks and Lupin was probably someone saying "Oh my god...Tonks...LUPIN!" and rushing over to the bodies when they are in the Great Hall. At least then their deaths wouldn't have been overlooked so much then.
Good last book. Snape and Neville are still my favorite characters.
Dang... was Dumbledore still puppetmastering Snape from the grave?! Seems like it.
Snape's death was pretty awesome, especially when retrospectively you can see why he was getting desperate about finding Potter to complete Dumbledore's last directive.
I thought the line, "Sometimes I think we sort too soon," (possibly not an exact quote) from Dumbledore to Snape was really interesting with the implication being Snape should have been in Gryffindor... and possibly other characters were in the "wrong" house. Perhaps sorting was never meant to be so life altering, otherwise I don't understand why the damn hat would listen to 11-year-olds' preferences.
Fred's death was necessary, I think. It kind of brought the consequences of the war home in a way that the other deaths couldn't accomplish. I was waiting for one of the twins to die, and I figured it was going to be him. Not that I like it; it's bitter, but that's the point.

This book was well-written and a great send-off to Harry Potter. All the deaths were tragic and shocking, but that's the way the war is. I also loved the ending. It gave us a great resolution to the book. I won't spoil anything because I don't know how to do spoiler tags. I can't wait for her encyclopedia to come out. Maybe it will clear up a few things.
