I made this to compare they way the turtles look in each film by viewing the pics. It goes in order starting from the left movie I, Movie II and then Movie III. Click on the pic to enlarge. Share your thoughts on your favorite look. Thanks

Your right they did get worse. Jim Henson's creature shop did the costumes for the first 2 films. There isnt a reason I can think of as why they went with a more happy cartooney look for the second film but a company called All Effects did the costumes in 3 and they were terrible as you can see from the pics. Part 1 was far superior to the other 2 movies but part 2 had alot better costumes then 3.

I liked Mikey and Leo's costumes best in the first movie, but Raph and Donnie's costumes from the second.
TMNT three. The costumes were horrible, but I really liked the story that came with it, so I don't hate on it as severe as some people like to.;) (The reason why I liked TMNT three, is because I love horses, and this movie incorporated the Turtles on horseback, and I thought that was cool)

Thats funny, I am the exact opposite of you. I like Raph and Don's look the best in part 1. I like the wider cheeks and the smaller eyes of Raph and Don. Raph looks the best of all though.

We're all different. World would be boring if we all thought the same way and had the same opinions.
What I liked about the 2nd costumes, especially Donnie's, is the wide range of facial expressions. Like when he was surfing on the chair, and a Foot stuck a Bo out in the path of the chair, and he knew what was gonna happen. Funny. I also thought his expression when Mikey dropped the pizza in the potion he was making was cute too. I just think it was the facial expressions for me, at least Raph's and Don's.
Bmaga123
02-07-2007, 07:52 PM
I agree on the facial expressions, they were alot better due to the more advanced animatronics in part 2. They had alot wider range of expressions. I think I just really liked the paint job and realistic look in the first movie but I still really like the second movie costumes as well. Part 3 makes me sick.

Well there is no need to compare them because they are computer animation not live action. If there was 3 animated TMNT movies then it would be a good idea to compare the 3 but there isnt. Sorry

I prefer their looks in Secret of the Ooze over the first film, but they're all pretty damn neat. They may look more realistic in TMNT but they're more visually striking in the sequel, and the animatronics were vastly improved, with better lip-synching and much more facial expression.
Man, Raph sure does look goofy in that shot from TMNT III.

Don did have some big cheeks in the first film but mostly when he was smiling which he is in the pic above. One feature I will point out that I loved in the part 1 turtles asside from the paint jobs is the eyes. I think they look alot realer and less cartooney because they arnt as big and dont show as much white in them.

I agree about Leo from part 3. He takes the cake for the worst looking head out of all of them. He looks like a dinasour his head is so longated from front to back its rediculous.

I was reading a bunch of articles about the original turtles movie and the design work went into the turtles and they talked about how they came up with a bunch of maquette designs for each turtle (and Splinter ofcourse) before getting approval on the design so they could to start making the costumes. I seriously want to see those maquettes and some of the other designs they came up with for the guys.

Yup. That's another reason why I love the costumes of the first movie the most --Their eyes just seemed so lifelike. Leo's eyes in particular seemed so real to me, escpecially when he was getting on Raph's case about bringing April to their lair.

The eyes were made by an artificial eye company..yes, they are REAL glass eyes. Actually I think they're a resin material, but the company makes glass eyes too. Thats why they look real. I bet today, if they made them...the pupils could react to light. Well, okay maybe not, that's what CGI is for.

I definitely love the look of all the turtles in the 1st movie the best, by far. They're still good in the second movie, although Don's mouth really bugged me. The 3rd movie.. eughh no. I watched a few scenes from it, and I thought Raph's teeth really stood out. They all probably did in that movie, I can't remember.. but I'm not gonna watch it to find out, haha.

I agree about Don's mouth in part 2, he seemed to have a very thin and flat upper lip and a severe underbight. Looked odd especially when in the first film all the turtles had more of an overbight like they should.

Jim Henson's Creature Shop rules! Henson had more of an impact on my childhood than Disney did. Their involvement with TMNT only made it sweeter. I'm not sure if I knew Jim had died prior to TMNT 2, but it wasn't until the credits of TMNT 2 and seeing it dedicated to the memory of Jim that it really sunk in. We owe Brian Henson a lot for pushing for the TMNT project and convincing his dad that it was a good idea. Does anyone know the exact story of why Henson's Creature Shop was never involved in TMNT 3 and what studio was reponsible for those subpar costumes?

Yeah I have an article regarding TMNT 3. Henson's bid on the movie but All Effects bid lower and got the gig to do the movie. It fit the budget better having All Effects do the costumes. You pay for what you get obviosly.

Did they really bid on it? I wasn't aware of that. I had just assumed it had to do with confusion and loss of direction the company seemed to experience in those first few years after Jim died. They really didn't do a whole lot for awhile there.

Yeah it says in the article that they did bid but it was way to high for the budget of the film so they went with All Effects.

I read part of the reason was that the turtles was a 'violent' movie and Jim really wanted nothig of it.
Yeah it's like when Laidlaw underbids all the quality service providers(in my industry)...you get what you pay for.... crap.
Those teeth...I swear...they're like in your face. Reminds me of a cartoon donkey, big teeth.
In #1...anybody notice how icky their teeth looked? THAT is realism. They don't have dentists! I doubt they even brushed!
It was All Creature Effects...they screwed up the TMNT.

02-09-2007, 09:11 AM
Ha! It's not like they were trying to impress any chicks, until April came along. I dunno though, if you don't have access to a dentist, you're more likely to want to take preventative measures. Otherwise, they wouldn't have any teeth left. :D

Yeah there teeth looked alot different in the first film, in fact they were more off white with rounded tips where is the other 2 films had scuared white teeth. In Part 3 they actually had Gums which looks very odd to me.
Ugh, the spots on the cotumes in TMNT 3 just make me cringe each time I see them. They just don't belong there! The first movie costumes were by far the best. No weird liver spots, no big dorky teeth, or fat faces, or anything. In the second movie I could deal with the fatter faces, but number 3 just pushed me over the edge with the costume. Just look!
Big dorky teeth that don't belong there (and not to mention those spots again...ugh)

The first movie was by far the greatest. Realistic costumes...swearing on the odd occasion and not going "Oh no!" but just saying "damn". I love that movie. The second movie was alright too. Not great, but it didn't suck that much either. Although I didn't like Raph's new fat head when I first saw it, I just lived with it. It's not like it affected the preformence of the actors or anything like that.

I didnt like the head shapes in TMNT 2 either. They looked funny. I'm used to the over shot upper lip, with the wide but flat chin...okay im seriously figuring out how to describe Raph's face in TMNT1...HAHA....he had the cheeks but they were right, they are cheeky-all of them were-the cheeks were in porportion to the rest of the face whereas in TMNT2, Raph's whole chin area was flatter and his cheeks seemed compressed with the flatter chin, and the overshot lip became almost under shot and it looks weird.
Raphs color changed a little in TMNT2 as well, I think he was darker when in 1, (looking at a pic) he looks a little lighter and the colors & blends aren't all greens, they used some grey and browns on the freckles on top of his snout.
I know im probably making no sense at all!! HAHHAA!!

I totally understand what you are saying. In part one if you look at all the turtles mouth area its a lighter yellowish green blended into a darker green and the spots wernt all just perfect circles they were more blotchy and blended better creating a more realistic look overall to the turtles. The bandana's also wernt as bright in part one which I liked.

I am going to re-edit this to make it look better. Turtles 1 costumes were really good, Jim Henson and his team did a great job putting this together. You can see the effort into it. Turtles 2 isn't that bad, but not the greatest. Still the Creature Shop did a great job. Turtles 3 is ok. Sure it's not the best looking costumes out of the live action movies, but to each is own. I will always find animatronics really amazing.

I really don't see what everyone has against the costumes in TMNT II. I thought they were perfectly fine, a definite improvement in terms of animatronics and facial expressions.

I liked the side-by-side comparison.
If possible, why not add the new film Turtles in there? And, to go the extra mile, the original comics, the '87 toon (even if they had at least three different faces in that one), the Next Mutation, and the '03 toon?
A lot to ask, but just throwing it out there...

Kind of agree with the majority here, the first one had the best. As a kid I really didn't notice the subtle differences between the first and second movie (when you're that little you're just like "omgomgturtlesomgomg!"), but I remember seeing the third movie in theatres and being completely turned off by how different they looked.

The only problem I have with III's costumes are the spots and the eye holes on the masks are too big, but it wasnt that big of a deal for me. I didnt really like the way the masks come to a point on the turtles heads in the new movie, now I dont care.
The guys from Killer Klowns from Outer Space did the costumes on TNM, I remember reading the ninjaturtles.com website production files as they were designing the costumes. I dont know how they could be so skilled at making killer klowns but fail at producing quality turtle mutants.

I agree with you. Honestly, if it were a combination of the first and second movie's costumes. There were things I think needed improved in the first movie's costumes that they fixed in the second, but it also worked a bit backwards, too, if that makes any sense.
Anyhow, I happened to like the second movie's costumes.

The second movie to me was my favorite as a kid. I was 2 when the first movie came out, thus didn't see it in theaters. I might have seen the second one in theaters, I can't be sure though. I do remember being 3-5 years old and playing with Ninja Turtles, Ghostbusters and Transformers.

The first movie heads are all the best. However, for some reason or another, I find that all of Don's heads rub me the wrong way. I don't know if it is just the chosen pics or not, but Don's head size and shape is the strangest out of the turtles in all three movies. I think his head maybe a little too fat or squashed compared to his brothers. I can't quite point it out...

I always got the impression that they tried to make Donny look maybe a little bit chubbier than the other turtles (especially in the first movie), maybe that's why Don's head looks a little more mishapen and squished. I personally like the idea of Don being slightly more chubby than the others. The Turtles aren't exact clones of each other, so naturally their bodies should be different sizes, and Don being the thinker and brains, probably spends a little more time sitting down at a computer or pondering.

The first movie costumes look good, but I find the second movie costumes to be more pollished. They have that extra attention to detail. So I prefer the second one.
The third movie costumes are just a disaster. Those just need to be burried in the deep cold earth, never to be seen again. Seriously.

I liked Mikey's costume and 2 the best and Leo's. But I wasn't that satisfied with Don or Raph. They both looked a little too polished or something. Raph's seemed a little more bug eyed and Don's proportions just didn't seem right to me. But we could argue until the cows come home. But the movie 2 costumes were the best in quality overall I think.

I'm glad there's so many people who share my opinion of 1 being the best costumes. For me it's no contest that 1 takes the cake in terms of realism and better looking. I'd take the heads/costumes from 1 any day over the better animatronics from 2. Their heads look virtually the same in 3, all the eyes look the exact same, which is dumb to me, and cheap.
In 2 it looks like they tried to at least keep the headshapes similar to the 1st, some of them noticably different like Raphs- still prefer the Raph from the 1st movie. God those ones from 3 are just terrible. Look how retarded Leo looks. I can accept people who think the story for 3 was good, but anyone who says the costumes were better is clearly void of good taste.
I'm not a fan of the liver spots.
Of course, the first movie costumes are the best. They seem to progressively devolve into maniacally wide-eyed geckos.
