View Full Version : Where are the prequel comics?!?!

Bircher

Am I missing something or is Mirage like a month behind? I just got my tales with Casey on the cover, and according to ninjaturtles.com the 3rd prequel comic should have come out today, however, my shop is yet to even get the first one.

Anyone know what is going on?

Its typical Mirage that, being late!!! Their moto was, after all, "If its not late, its not Mirage!"

It woulda been nice to read all these BEFORE I saw the film, but it looks like it aint gonna happen!!!

With all due respect, everybody at Mirage, whether staffer or freelancer, work like crazy to get all the books out on time, so pse. take it easy dude

Sorry Diego, I didn't mean to offend! I honestly don't mind that much, I was playing up to the "If its not late, its not Mirage" which was after all, their own motto back in the day!! I did write "It woulda been nice..." and not "RIGHT! I AM REALLY P*SSED OFF WITH MIRAGE..." because I know its still quite a small company with a hell of alot on their shoulders, and I respect everyone that works there for working their asses off for fanboys (and girls!) like me! I meant my post to be light hearted.

And yeah, of course I picked up Tales vol 2 TPB! How could I not, that panel to panel guys have got me hooked with all these signed bookplates!

We know you guys work hard to get those out on time, and i honestly would rather them be a little late as opposed to never comming out at all. Thats how i look at it :) .

Also just looked at the shipping lists for this week(seems the same as yesterday, so they may not have updated it yet) but their still not on the lists. Will just have to check tommorow or call wed. afternoon.

The Tales book is already several weeks late.

I'm confused, Putrescent-- if books come out today (Weds.) and you went yesterday, why do you not think they are coming out this week?

Yeah, that's confusing me too. He says he was "just at the shop", but the time-notation of his post would mean-- either he had gone like hours beforehand, or this shop was open late at night (which they're usually not, from what I've known at least).

It's really too bad you didn't, because you [and I] were right: the books came out. I picked up three copies because I'm providing comics for two women in the fandom. My comic book store still has two copies of both books, they're a little banged up around the corners but still in great reading condition. If anyone on these boards who lives in the U.S. doesn't have access to a comic store, and would like me to reserve these for them, you need to let me know right away so that I can have him take them off the shelf, and a quick PayPal payment (after I have verified for you that the books were still there and I was able to reserve them) needs to follow ($5.00 for one book, $9.00 for both).

By the way, Jake, I can't wait to read these. They look absolutely awesome.

Here's hoping that the next two (or three) come out next week.

Well I got mine today! And I be in the UK, yar!

The Raph one is top notch, shows how he gets the suit and whatnot, and just a little bit violent... (not too bad though...) Plus, there's some very nice special guests at the very start, heck I don't wanna sequel to the new movie, I wanna prequel!! Or at least more comics set in the new movie world!!!

The Mikey one was pretty cool too, it was ace to see Mikey, Don and Casey interacting. The artwork though, i'm sorry to say, it just didn't gel with me. I just think it coulda benefited more with a different artist...

And yeah, I see what you mean CJJohn about 'em being a bit banged up, my Raph one's fine but the Mikey one has a big scratch down the center, and I think they were all like that. Anyhoo, going to another comic store tomorrow, this one I have a standing order with for a buncha books, including TMNT. So hopefully the Mikey one'll be in a bit better condition. (I buy two of each book if I get the chance, one to read, and the other to keep, as I hate getting marks, fingerprints, etc on em!!)

Got both the Raph and Mike ones today. And I've got to say I'm rather disapointed in both of them. It seemed like they were trying to squeeze too much into the Raph one. And if this is supposed to follow the first movie then what is with the Triceratons and Utrom references. The Mike one seemed kinda pointless storywise. Not to mention I thought they both had the worst art I've ever seen in a TMNT comic. The Mike one was slightly better than the Raph one but not by much. (And this is coming from someone who doesn't mind Lawson's style.) Not to mention the same artist who did the Raph one (Pinto) is going to be doing the Leo one too. I'm not sure I even want to pick up the other three prequels at this point. I still might if the story looks good and Dario is supposed to be doing the Donny one and I really like his art. But major bummer on these first two. I hope the rest of you like them better than I did.

Also it it just me or was anyone else under the impression that because these were movie prequel comics you thought they were going to be in color? (Not that these's anything wrong with b&w. I was just kinda surprised when I opened them.) I wonder if the movie adaptation comic will be b&w too?

I read them both and loved the Raph one. Some of the inking and toning was kind of rough and seemed rushed but I liked the style of the art and the story was great and really got me excited about the movie. The Mike one was not as good. The story was cool and set up Mike's obsession with the Nightwatcher well but I thought the art was absolutely horrible. I hope that the penciller of this issue won't be returning.

The covers look great and I can't wait to get the rest and line them all up. Overall, they were cool for just being kind of extra movie promotion.

Could it be that (Gasp!) this movie actually isn't straight from the first movie contenuiety and can just be allowed to have it's own back story?

Ok So I got the last two at my shop today last copys of both to fhew! Lucky me!
I really loved the Raphael back story thats my boy go be a hero! haha
I really want more of this night watcher thing and I really find it great that Mike's looking up to Raph so much.
I really enjoyed the art in this comic even with the pencil marks through allot of the book which was kind of odd and made things look a bit rushed.
I was shocked to see them actully killing Triceratons and thugs!! Now this would have been awsome in the movie! This is what allot of people want to see in a "NINJA" turtle movie.
Mikey's was cute I didn't much care for the art personally all the lines came off a bit oddly to me (and before any artists get upset or hurt It's just an opinion). Splinter is such a jerk in this movies storys shesh!
When he said to them don't get involved in the human world...then he says next time get some cake for me I'd have been like CAKE! Yeah well guess what humans made that cake so you can't have it..hahah and you wonder why I like raph ;)
Or at least more comics set in the new movie world!!!
I agree I want more from the new movie world as well.

And putrecent, couple things coulda happened when you went yest. 1, it was tuesday :P 2, the shipping list didnt get updated til yesterday anyway, so maybe the guy at your shop looked on monday and it wasnt there, and hadnt checked the update made yesterday.

Although I didn't care for the Triceratons in the Raph book (why would there be Triceratons in the sewers?) and the part where Splinter decides to send Leo away seemed too short. Other than that it's all good stuff!
I agree about the triceraton thing it just seemed kinda odd and reminded me of the image comics.
Yes but who knows that could continue in another one of the comics.
Hmmm I'm sure allot of people will dissagree with you on the Mike comics art being better than Raphs I for one do the one for Raph is much closer to the movie for me than the Mike one is.
It actully even sort of even reminds me of Jim Lawsons new style that very well could be why you like that one.
Me I was a fan of the Image comics tmnt series and Raph's comic reminds me of the art from that.
I wasn't under the impression they would be full color but I have to say it really would have helped make these books stand out allot more because the covers are very nice.
Or perhaps, its a hint at what may be explained/happen in the sequel if we get one?
Nah it's not gonna happen like that...it's happened in the past pretense so you won't be seeing that we already see things in this movie.

It was so cool. I went to my comic shop today. I was there looking for JSA issue 4, I was about to ask the clerk if they had gotten in any of the prequel comics, and BAM, before ai could open my mouth, he comes up to me, witht he raph and Mikey issues, and hands them to me.

The guy knew I was a Turtles fan, so I guess he saved it for me.

Both I thought were good, gave some good backstory. Though, I liked Raph's more than Mikey. The orgin of the nightwatcher was really cool to see.

but um zarius the triceratons have never been in the movie let alone zog.
But I guess we could be given a back story for the movie world it just kinda sucks we didn't have all of the triceratons and utroms in the movies all those years ago. Let alone a hero like Zog.

Not the best turtles comics in the world, but it was nice to see prequel stories to the movie. To me mirage's artists/writers is like amateur hour, which is in no way a bad thing. Everyone's gotta start somewhere. Still I'm thinking the prequel comics are going to be a big gateway for people, and maybe they should have tried to get some of the veteran turtle guys working on these comics and put these guys on tales. It probably should have been in color too, I love the B&W style, but there's already 2 (well hopefully tmnt comes back) B&W turtles comics. You can't tell me Mirage can't afford it though, Peter Laird must be getting a pretty penny for all the tie in products with the movie deal. From bed sheets, to action figures, to video games, to mcdonalds toys. Not to mention that the movie itself will probably make a lot.

I heard that my LCS sold out over 25 copies of each Raph and Mike title. That's pretty awesome for an independent comic.

Raph'N'Roll
03-28-2007, 06:14 PM
I got them both myself this week, and I have to agree with ThemanthatwouldbeRaphael and Ectocooler, I too thought that these books should have been in colour due to there association with the movie.

The art while good in places also felt amateurish, and I don't think it'll help or encourage new readers to buy other Mirage Turtles books, who's curiosity was perked by the new movie.
Now I'm all for different up and coming artists getting a shot at the Turtles, and I love seeing all the different styles in Tales, but the fact that these prequel books will appeal to a more broader audience who've seen the movie, I think a more polished look was needed.

If only they were done by the cover artist and in full colour, that would have been awesome.

Wait, didn't you know? All the ninja turtles comics are coloring books. That's why Volume 2 was so short-lived. People got disappointed when they found out that someone already colored in their coloring books. I have first-prints of every issue of Volume 1, and I've colored in every one of them which is too bad because I'm really terrible at coloring. It looks like a 4 year old did it.

Okay, I lied. I don't really have any issues of Volume 1. :( But if someone wants to mail me a bunch, I'll color them in for you!!

Well, I just got back from the comic shop and bought April and Leo, but no sight of Don or the adaptation. I asked the owner about it, and he said they missed Don for some reason. He told me they should get some next week. He's ordered the adaptation as well, so I'm guessing that will come out next week or the week after. Otherwise, it would have been there today since he's ordered it.

I got them as well today...Poor Don always gets left out!!!
April: Her comic is great the Art by Andres Ponce is beautiful it sort of almost reminds me of the Archie series.
I like that it informs us that April still owns the Second Time around store something that wasn't even hinted at in the movie.
There is something that bothers me though on page 3 to the left there is a guy smoking a cig. he's wearing something odd that I just can't figure out it sort of makes him look like a robot. Anyone have any idea what it is exactly?I'd have to say page 15 is my favorite page in the entire comic.
So was I the only one not expecting Sabastian to turn on April like that?
The violence in this issue is a bit shocking tuns of people are dead and I can not believe those men hit April like that.
I also liked the little touch of them adding the crooked x goverment people to
the mix.
The was a great comic over all but I think it could have went on allot more I'd have liked to see April going after the other statues as well and seeing what happens there.
Leonardo: Leo's comic is even better than April's in my opinion!
I loved seeing him go all over the place and meeting the Yeti's!
Oh And let me also make mention of what a wonderfull Artist Dario Brizuela is he's another that really takes me back reminding me of the Archie series style.
Wow This issue had allot of blood as well and cursing which is a bit shocking but it isn't written by Peter. I have to be honest I sort of liked seeing the gore and urse words for a change.
My favorite part of the comic is the bottom panel on page 14 where Leonardo is dripping in the blood of the men who had planed to sell those children to adults.
I do have something I dislike allot about the comic book though and that is the inclusion of the ACIENT ONE & THE NINJA TRIBUNAL.
I'm sure allot of people will get kicks out of seeing that but it just bothers me seeing them included in this seeing how those characters where created strickly for the 2k3 cartoon. It does sort of make one wonder though do they plan to have these characters be a part of the new movies?
But other than that the Comic is really great.
I can't wait for the movie adaption next week and hopefully poor Don as well!

I'm short the Donatello prequel! :( Must go on the hunt for that one...

Overall, I thought they were pretty good. Leo's and Aprils were pretty awesome though I wish they'd packed in more pages to Leo's. It seemed a little rushed to me but the art was great and the story was well done. Just rushed.

I really wasn't fond of Raph's story. :( The writing was difficult to get through, it felt really uh.....hmm......it just felt a little silly. And Leo was a huge jerkface and Splinter just- wth Splinter, come on man. 9_9 It, too, felt rushed.

Mikey's story was cute though, I would have liked more of his cute 'duuude' and 'bro' words in there.

Anyways. I dunno if this was a place to discuss the comics or just to FIND them. >_>; My apologies if it's OT.

And yep, what a great day I had so far in TMNT terms... First of all I got up dead early to take a walk to the post office depot to pick up a parcel. On returning, said parcel had an Eastman/Ryan Brown sketch/watercolour of Raphael which I won offa ebay (from Ryan Brown himself, which he signed to me too). Also in the package was a great surprise, a signed (to me again, with headsketch) poster of the art show which he just held last weekend! What a total great guy, i'm made over by this. Then a coupla hours later the buzzer goes, "Package for Mr Tough" says the voice, so I signed for it and all, only for it to be 2 original pages of Rick Vietch's North by Northwest comic (b & w, bought offa Heavy metal site). Very good!! Then I took a trip on my way to work to my LCS, where I got the Donnie, April and Leo prequels, also th new Tales book too! And I got to read em at work, thus getting paid to do so!! (as I am now getting paid to post on the forum!)

And to make things even better, there's a dude called John Haward doing a signing at my LCS tomorrow, so I done a google on him, found his site and it turns out he done a coupla Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles stuff back in the day in the UK, so I emailed him and he's taking some original art to the signing for my viewing and buying pleasure!!! Can't wait!!!

Woah, what a lenghty post! And now, onto the comics:

Donnie's issue is great, but not exactly a solo effort, as Splinter plays a rather large roll in it, which was brilliant! and Mikey sticks his nose in too for a whiley) Only thing is the art, I thought it worked on some pages, and on others it looked truely awful. I'm a big fan of Lawson's, but I jsut don't dig his 'New Movie' turtle look. And I think the chopping and changing of inkers didn't help either.

April's is also awesome!! Very nice twist at the end there, and the art was brilliant! Who knew she went through so much in the jungles!

Leo's was pretty cool too, but my least favourite of this three. Dunno why, the art was brilliant, the story was nice, but I just preferred the other two... I totally dug the cameo of another character though, which was a nice surprise!

In fact, my order of preference for these prequel comics goes:

Donnie
Raph
April
Leo
Mikey

Ta~Da!!

phew!

Ok. First. Let me say, I really don't like comic books. I never really read the Turtle comic books, but jsut took avid readers word for what they have read.

Today, I get the Meet Casey Jones and the Leonardo Prequel.

Honestly. I think the Turtles comics really, really suck. I hate the black and white. The art is aweful, I can draw ten times better than that. On Buslady's site, there is a member there that has artwork of the Turtles that could blow anything you see the "professionals" do out of the water. The wording of comic books suck. And why in the hell is it black and white? Why couldn't the whole Leonardo comic book art be like the one on the cover. Cover looks great, but then you open it, and see work that looks like it was done by a 6 year old. Actually, I have seen better drawings of the Turtles done by 6 year olds than I saw in this comic!

So, I ask, what is it really that makes these comic books so enjoyable to most ninja turtle fans? Does my hatred for the comic book format make me an inferior TMNT fan? I don't like feeling like this, but I almost want my money back on those two comics I got, and I didn't even pay for the freaking things, they were given to me by my cousin as a late birthday present, but she even thought the Turtles comics sucked compared to her beloved X-Men.

The graphic novels are great and fun to read, they really clear up a lot I did not know. The artwork is pretty solid and stays truw to the turtles.

As for the prequels, I agree, the art is inferior. I am not sure why. I did only buy these to inform myself of what happened before the movie.

I dunno. I love the Turtles, but I also only know them from the old toon, theatrical movies, theatricla movie novel adaptations and the 2k3 toon. I've caught a few of the fast forward eps, but the bug the living hell out of me, so I simply don't watch that anymore.

The comic books, I was jsut dissapointed. I never really liked the story telling in comic books, no matter what franchise they were, but I at least liked some of the art, like the Conan, some X-Men, and an occasional batman. But the Turtles, not so much. I guess not even the Turtles can't change me what I am. No sweat.

Dude, different artist have different styles. Not everyone is a Jim Lee or a Michael Turner, or an Alex Rose. Some people's styles are very simplistic, like Scott McDaniel, Darwyn Cooke, and Stan Sakai. While others go into heavy detail like Ed Benes and Alex Ross. What matters is they have the basic fundamentals down, and all the TMNT artist have that. Thankfully, these guys aren't Rob Liefields(thats a comic book joke).

Plus there was nothing wrong with the lettering. And the TMNT boooks have almost always been in black and white, it's just they're thing. Alot of other comics do that. Like Usagi Yojimbo and Walking Dead.

And yes, I like the comics over any other incarnation.

Well, considering the TMNT were originally comic book characters, that's not that hard to imagine. Try reading some of the original Mirage issues (You can read the first couple on the official website) before writing off the entire continuity.

Is that sarcasm?! I hope not because I really wish people would stop saying Lawson's art sucks. I think it looks great (though I admit, I don't like his art in the Don prequel). If people are gonna say his art sucks, they should at least give a legitimate reason why. For example, the only thing I don't like about his art is the way he draws human eyes and lips. Everything else looks great to me, though.

You really, really need to read some of the main ninja turtles comics. Maybe then you'll understand why the comics are the best incarnation of the turtles that exists. The two issues you picked up are not even part of the main series at all. The best issues you're going to find are done by Eastman and Laird, although there are many other great turtles artists as well. I admit, the black and white takes a little getting used to; but now that I am used to it, I wouldn't want it any other way. Seriously, no joke. If you really just want pretty, colorful pictures, though, go check out the Dreamwave comics based on the 2k3 cartoon.

What is it about the comics that makes them your favorite out of all the incarnations?

Well, I really love the creative storytelling, it's not all realisitc, it's wierd and so completley out there, yet strangley believable. I love the cast of characters, and I like the fact that they don't have to hold back in the comics, the FCC has no power there.

Also, I don't have a problem with Lawson's artwork. I mean, I wish the women didn't have such manish looking chins, but otherwise it's good.

I have read the comics, or let me better explain myself. I've been to the comic books stores 5 times in my life, usually dragged in by my cousin. I have glimpsed in quite a few TMNT comics, but I just don't like the artwork or the way the stories are told. I am a novel reading person, not a comic book reading person. People keep telling me, like you are now, that I need to read the comics. I have checked them out, and I think they suck. No offense to Laird and Eastman, but their comics were not any better. I can't change the way that I am. I can't force myself to like a medium that I just dont. I gave it a try, and I just don't think much of comics. It's nothing personal.

The black and white doesn't help my prejudiceness either. Maybe I could make sense out of the mess that is drawn in the comics if it was color, but they won't change. And I think it's cheap of them not to do the comics in color!

Hi Warhorse...
So, you're "a novel reading person". I think that that if you want read comicbooks of any type, and enjoying, you should understand the medium first. This is not intended to insult you or something like that. The reality is that not everybody can read comics and understand the mechanics what do our brain to fill the gaps between two static drawings and create "moviment". Believe me, like a profesional, I`ve tried to introduce people to read comics and sometimes people don´t know where to start to read the word ballons or can´t distinguish a flashback from the "real time". That´s it. It`s not for everybody.

Now, you say this :

"I can't change the way that I am. I can't force myself to like a medium that I just dont. I gave it a try, and I just don't think much of comics. It's nothing personal"

My first reaction is "then, what are you doing in here, man". but I noted that you are really curious about why people enjoy the medium so I`m assuming that there is something in you that, maybe.......deep inside, want to start to enjoy a a new medium.

this a good start:

My advice is: read a ton of comics!...a comic store have a veriety of styles and stories. A lot of comics are colored, you know ; ). When you undestand the mediun and that frozen figures starting to move in your mind, so like the characters of the novels speak with a different voice in your head, the fun just start!:)

LOL Guys.

I do intend to keep an eye out for the TMNT movie comic.

While I do get discouraged when reading comics, I do like the atmosphere that comes with the comic book store and conventions. Some of the nicest people in the world are into comics. I go personally because I like card trading part. And at one time, I was into the Conan the Barbarian comics, but that was a long time ago.

I do kick myself in the butt for not getting the Raph prequel though. I've seen it. But an online friend who knows about my attitude towards comic books took Raph's prequel and made it into a novel version for me. Too bad they didn't do flash backs into how Raph turned into the Nightwatcher int he movie, but I guess that would have pushed the rating to a PG.

Also, judging by the Leo prequel comic (I really cant tell if that's sweat or blood on Leo's sword;)) I'm assuming Leo did kill that guerilla!

Not everyone is a Jim Lee or a Michael Turner...

I have to call shenanigans here because I think Jim Lee is soooo nothing to write home about. And Michael Turner is smooth sometimes but he's kind of like an anime-esque Jim Lee...or maybe it's the inkers they put on him that bug me. Anyways, replace those names with ones like Adam Hughes and I'll agree with ya. ;)

Alex Rose.

Do you mean Alex Ross? Just checking, because Ross IS freaking awesome. :D But I think I'd hate his ninja turtles.

I liked Peter & Kevin's original turtle work and I wish they still did it. Some issues you get great artists and others you get so-so artists. Also it depends on what inker they pair with what penciler. Sometimes inkers can brutalize a page. Other times it's a match made in heaven. :)

Anyways, sorry for the semi-OT post...

I do agree that there's something about the inking combined with Jim's art, but something struck me tonight while I happened to be looking at some City at War pages. Which led to looking through some Volume 4 pages.

If you go to ninjaturtles.com and browse the preview pages for any of the City at War books, look at the highly detailed toning on all of the pages. Then go to Volume 4, Number 1 and look at the toning on those pages. It's actually still very detailed. Then look at book 2, 3, 4, etc... keep going through the entire series. You can see the drastic de-evolution of the tones, to the point where it's virtually non-existant. And, IMO, Jim's art just kinda de-evolves right with it. :ohwell:

Yeah seriously though I'd really like to See Jim's Pencils I do remember him saying before some pleace that he was really trying to draw like some one else it it botherd him it may have been michael dooney I think.
But yeah he says he draw the way he does now because it's all him.
But didn't Dooney ink city at war? I think that could be the huge reason the people faces look the way they do because seriously it looks like Dooney more than lawson.
Look at Eric Talbot's art (some one I really like mind you) his art is very pointy and square like.
I'm pretty sure when vol.4 first started out peter had a bit of a hand in the inking.
I know we've talked about this before and I am no way shape or form trying to make excuses for one artists or trying to bash anyone I'm just trying to make sence out of all of this.
And I think what we're talking seriously is the lack of everything.

Just got my April and Leo prequel comics! :D Glad to have them, regardless of quality.

As usual in TMNT comics nowadays, the writing was kinda meh... And the art, the designs especially looked very "cheap-charlie." Almost like rush jobs, as though the artists were being paid chicken scratch for their work.:ohwell: Not motivated enough (and/or too short on time) to take full advantage of the b/w medium.

April's was better paced, I think, and the most informative of the two. Leo's could have been more enjoyable were it not SO DAMN SHORT. So much happens in his comic, but it zooms through each scene at 200 mph. Frustrating...

I think I'm gonna redraw the Leonardo movie prequel. B/W first, then color... :sweatdro: Glorify the scenes a little, fix the stereotypical "we shall have no place in which to live" dialogue of the slave chidren. Luckily, I'm still in college. Unlike these professional artists and writers, I still have some free time. Plus, I could use the practice.

I hope the Donatello Prequel and the Movie Adaptation are... better. And I hope the artists don't murder me for being so critical.

At the shop I go to older back issues are typically the only bagged-and-boarded comics (and they're in comic boxes, as well). Recent and new issues are just out on shelves.

The Shelf

At my shop, some of the special variants are boarded and bagged, but only because they tend to be worth more. For example, my shop owner was selling some of the Civil War Turner variants for $15-20, so he had them boarded and bagged.

EDIT: If you're worried about the comics being damaged, though, don't let it fool you. The comics I get in the mail from Marvel are usually in worse shape than the ones I get from the comic shop even though the ones direct from Marvel are boarded and bagged and the comic shop ones aren't.

For the most part, old comics come bagged and boarded, and new ones don't. However, I've run into some exceptions. I know of this excellent comic book shop downtown where all the comics -- even the new ones -- are put into bags with special backing.

And most of the time you can ask for the cardboard backings when you purchase your new comics. They only run about 10 cents or so.

Well...

Got my Donatello prequel and the movie adaptation comic.

I must say that out of all the prequels I've read (Leo, April, Don) Donatello's seems to be the best paced/written. I loved how it felt like I was actually reading a TMNT comic book. Despite the fact that I'm not a fan of how Lawson stylizes his artwork so heavily, he truly knows how to pace a comic. He really tells the story well. Loved the shots.

Oh, and Don's comic had something that NONE of the others that I read had -- a large picture taking up two pages. I dunno... like I said. I loved how Donatello's prequel felt the most like an actual comic book. (The others just seemed like a bunch of words and sequential pictures.) Definitely my favorite.

Now the movie prequel -- which I'm only halfway through at the moment, is mostly pretty good so far. There are a few pages that strike me as a little bland -- eg the three panels with all 4 turtles on the rooftop *shrugs* -- but others that are really quite nice. :) I'm liking it a lot so far. I also like how the dialog is slightly different -- shows me a slightly different/view of the events that occur in the movie.

I don't suppose... anyone wants to create a thread to discuss the adaptation comic? :-? We're just doing it here?...

I got the two new ones. My shop only got one of each, though. They did get more copies of the last issue of Tales this week, too so maybe more will be coming next week.

My comic store has new releases already bagged and boarded on the shelves. But if their in your box their not so that it saves room, but then when they pull 'em out for ya, they bag and board em. And i think the one i go to down in Charlotte does the same. But their the only 2 i know that does that(if i remember correctly that Heroes does it too).

I still havent gotten any of my prequels :( lol. I know their in my box and im debating to go pick em up saturday or wait til next thursday for when my X23 comes in.

Eh, figured I might as well do a rundown on the comics since I have them all now.

Raph: I really liked it. Everything happened pretty quick but I thought it was well paced considering all that they stuck in there. Nice to know for certain that the turtles have already encountered Triceratons and Utroms, though it makes me want to know when and how. Like the Nightwatcher origin too.

I really liked all of the little references to New York related media in the posters and whatnot. I was able to identify Downtown: My Manhattan by Pete Hamill, Escape from New York, and Snatch. I wasn't able to recognize all of them, though. Anybody recognize the posters on pg. 15 and 20 and the picture on pg. 21? Also, on a hunch, I looked up David Merryweather, uh, Catman (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cat-Man_and_Kitten) reference?

Mikey: Not quite as good as the Raph one. Not really a fan of the hatching in the artwork either. I did like Casey's involvement, though. Nice to know that when he's not doing vigilante work that he still manages to do good for the community. It's also nice to know where Mikey stands on the Vanilla Ice issue  The chronological continuity with the books is a nice touch too.

Don: Yay, my favorite turtle. I really liked this one too. I always like seeing Don being Don. First the gadget and then him communicating with the bat monster. That and it was really nice to know exactly why the monsters converged upon the city.

Also, it had me wondering about Splinter. It seems that he's been particularly worried about the boys, and not just because they don't have Leonardo around. Did something happen that made him even more cautious about them going above ground?

April: Poor Casey, it's not his fault that he's, well, that he's Casey. Wow, I wouldn't have expected this much violence from the April comic. Art was great, story was great, just all around nice.

Leo: Man, Leo can be so dense at times. Took him long enough to figure it out. There was a lot going on but I think the way one lesson flowed into the next worked well. I'm not sure how I feel about the ninja tribunal being in this one, but it seemed to work.

So, it was overall a really nice series that complimented the movie well. However, I'm still left with the impression that they could have gone deeper into the backstory. Maybe they'll do something more to fill in some of those remaining gaps?

Who are the Utroms? Are those the robots with the little Krangs in their bellies or is that the race the Triceratons are at war with? Or is it neither?

Right, the Utroms are the small aliens who use robots to get around (typically as a "camoflage" routine - as they put coverings on the robots to resemble the locals).

So are they at war with the Triceratons?

also..

Is Krang (from the 1987 tv series) ever connected to them or is his Dimension X completely unrelated to the Utroms?

The Utroms are another race (and are a normally peaceful one). The humanoid race the Triceratons are at war with is called the Federation.

As for Krang; there is no relation, just resemblance.

OK I got the movie comic and the Donatello prequel today.
I'll post my thoughts on the movie adaptation in the thread for that now onto Donatello!
Great story bad art...it's a shame really I really want to like lawsons art and as always I'm going to say it again.
They need to stop having people who do thick borderline inking on his art work his art looks best when the inking is done thin.
I don't know if this comic was rushed just like the movie adaptation was but it really seems as if it was this has got to be some of Jim's sloppiest work I think I've ever seen.
I'm used to just the humans looking odd We have one Human Max Winters shown on page 23 and he looks better than what we usually see from him human wise but that's one panel out of an entire comic book.
I think the reason I get so disappointed is because I know Jim is a great artist and writer at that.
I finally just got all of his Bade Biker and Orson comics and those blow this steaming pile out of the water any day.
While I'll give him that the fact that this comic is more detailed than the usual we get from the volume 4 comics it would seem to me that the detailing is out of place if anyone can understand that comment.
I really don't know if everything comes as so off set to me because we have 4 people inking this one mans art but it very well could hold true.
I don't think anyone can ink Jim Lawsons art better than himself the only person in my opinion that ever came close was Michael Dooney during City At War.
My favorite panels in this comic would have to be the towers on pages 6 and 7 they are both really well done.
I also like top panel on page 8 I think that has to be some of the best art concerning Jim Lawson that I've seen in years!
I like the idea and the detail in the surroundings of pages 16-17 but the characters within the surroundings are really lacking in my opinion.
Pages 21, 23, & 26 both have very nice building art again but this isn't the teenage mutant ninja building comic is it?
OK and I know I can't be the only who said what the hell? When the Vampire Said "Damn You!" and then a few pages later was speaking some alien tongue no one could understand.
But like I said at the start of all of this The art isn't so hot but I really enjoyed the story sort of how I am with Vol. 4

I agree that Donatello was a good story with bad art. It didn't help any that Jim drew them with rounded faces in an attempt to follow the movie's style.

Dooney didn't ink City at War - some guys who haven't worked on TMNT since did. They're names can be dug up on ninjaturtles.com.

I recently had my Bade Biker and Orson books out, too and that art is fantastic and puts all his recent stuff to shame.

I agree Lawson's art in Donatello (especially the heads/mouths) was spotty on certain pages, but I still prefer it over the art found in Raphael. It just blows chunks, through and through.

oh my bad about Dooney it's very reminiscent of his style I do recall Jim Lawson saying some place he was trying to copy his style at some point and thats why he draws the way he does now...I say just go back to his old style before tmnt and the roll playing books his style in that is just fine.
And yeah I finally got through them all I sort of wish the series would have went on more now cause I've sort of grown attached to bade and Orson.

Here's how I'd rate the prequel comics, from best to worst...

Leonardo
April
Michelangelo
Donatello
Raphael

I really like the art in Leonardo. It's neat, it's crisp, and the storyline is awesome, as well. I really do enjoy them all, though.

I didn't like the Raph book at all. So many things about the story just don't make sense. First, why are the movie universe Turtles looking for Triceratons in the sewers? WTF? And how is it an old guy who used to fight crime has a suit fit for a giant turtle? And even though it is Raph's book, I didn't like that Splinter sent Leo away in all of one panel. I would have preferred for that not to have been in the book at all than to have it covered crapily. The art was extremely awkward, but not horrible, IMO.

I did find a copy of April today, and I have to say that I think it's the strongest of all of 'em.

My order:
April
Leonardo
Michaelangelo
Donatello
Raphael

The only thing I didn't like about Leo was the Ancient One showing up. Why so much mixing of the universes?!

VaughnMichael
04-14-2007, 10:15 PM
Yeah I enjoyed them all for different reasons.
Let's see what would my order be.
April
Leonardo
Raphael
Donatello
Michaelangelo

I really think it would have helped if these things would have either had more issues or more characters besides the 4 turtles and april had comics.
Why so much mixing of the universes?!

That's fine once again we have a difference of opinion.
It bothers me because they refuse to acknowledge other things yet bring in things that happened in recent years.
There are allot of wasted characters and storylines out there in my opinion and I think it's a bit ignorant to just ignore the past especially when you can take from it whatever you want because it's your creation.
And yeah I'm talking about Armaggon and the Future Archie series amongst other things I really feel that it's all lost potential and could have been leaps and bounds better to be used as a story line for Fast Forward than what we've been given.
I get bothered by the addition of 2k3 characters to the comics because 2k3 as closely related as it is to the mirage comics is it's own world.
I also just really hate the Ancient One so I could be a bit biased on that.

The Ancient One technically hasn't been in the comics. The prequel comics are only tied to the movie, not the TMNT comic continuity. As such, they can pick and choose whatever they feel like from any of the continuities since they're not bound to any one continuity except the new movie (which itself is its own continuity since it pays tribute to so many different ones). But I agree with your overall statement. For example, I don't really like the Battle Nexus appearing in Vol. 4, but it's nothing I would spill beans over... so to speak. :ohwell:

EDIT: After reading a little more of this thread, I think there's something that needs to be clarified. The new movie is only loosely based on the other movies. It is, for all intents and purposes, its own continuity. They tried to please fans of every continuity by paying tribute to each. For example (note that this isn't an exhaustive list of different TMNT universes, but merely an example):

Old 'Toon: Cowabunga Carl mask
Old Movies: Various objects from Turtles 3 (note that this obviously isn't a strict sequel to the old movies because the only object from Turtles 3 would be the time scepter since nothing was brought back from the past)
New 'Toon: Karai, Triceratons, the Ancient One, and the TCRI canister
Mirage Comics: Karai, Triceratons, and the TCRI canister

I'm sure there are more things to add to that list, but that's all I can think of right now.

No but he's now part of the movie world and personally I say it's only a matter of time that we start seeing other characters from 2k3 show up in vol. 4 I wouldn't be suprised at all.
And yes I know all this. ;)
I don't mind it because it's been differnt so far but it just sort of seems like it cheapens the book by doing such things. Trying to apeal to fans of the new toon...why should they be so lucky when he's not trying to apeal to anyone else. I can't say I blame him though if it's gonna help his sales I'm sure.
And some of the things in themselves shown in the trophy room bother the hell out of me also.
The turtles didn't bring the outfits back from the past with them.
It sucks now we will never get an epic movie battle with the triceraton war or baxter stockman or the utroms because this wall of stuff is showing us it's all happend allready.
I really do pray though that they don't make shredder in the movie world an Utrom.

They probably do. I think it takes them a while to put new issues on their catalog, but he could try calling them and placing the order over the phone. The number should be listed on their catalog page somewhere. I think I heard someone say that they ordered something over the phone before it was actually listed on the catalog.

I just got all six books (previews 1-5, movie adaption), and I got curious on a certain note, so I emailed Dan Berger about it. Check the answer he gave:
S:I just got all of the movie prequel comics (awesome stuff, by the way), and was surprised to see Triceratons, The Ancient One, and the Ninja Tribunal.

Since these are prequels to the movie, does that mean those characters are canon to the movie? What about Hun's appearance in the Game Boy Advance game, and the mention of Bishop and Lord Simultaneous in the same game?

Dan:Seems logical to me that they would be considered as part of the movie's canon - but bear in mind that Kevin Munroe probably had nothing to do with those projects, so his opinion may differ.

Not concrete, but interesting, to say the least.

As Putrescent mentioned, I think I could definitely do without an utrom Shredder in the next movie. :dead:

However...

Bishop is a perfect villain for the TMNT. Splinter keeps telling his sons to stay underground and OUT OF SIGHT. Why? What is the everpresent fear at the back of everyone's minds? That scientists and hyperactive government officials would find out that they exist, come looking for them, and in a worst case scenario, capture and proceed to vivisecting the whole family. Even one of them getting brought to a lab and becoming a test subject would be their worst nightmare come to life. Bishop represents a blood-chilling reason (which exists REGARDLESS of the Foot, aliens, aligning of stars and whatnot) for the TMNT to "stick to the shadows." He represents the horror that would befall them were they to be discovered.

No matter how many times the TMNT "save the world," it will never accept them. If the general public finds out they exist, it will only fear them and seek to destroy them because they are "mutant freaks" -- who don't even have humanoid faces like the X-Men. So they would be treated as savage beasts despite the fact that they are sentient.

Plus, if Bishop is in a TMNT movie, then they might use the aspect of the 2k3 take on Rat King's origin that I liked the most: Splinter's DNA had a hand in creating the RatKing, giving him further connection to the turtles. :) I also liked how insanely impossible Rat King is to fight in 2k3. The tougher the adversaries, the better.8)

Well... *shrugs* I guess Baxter Stockman, or a new character invented soley for the movie universe, could always fill in that sort of villain role I described... It's just that Stockman is frequently portrayed as a bumbling egotistical "Doc Ock" of the TMNT universe -- comical, even. Plus, we know the turtles have already faced him, as seen by the mouser on the trophy wall. :ohwell: Maybe there could be a new character for the movie. *shrugs* It's just that we rarely see any reinforcement of the "danger" on the surface that Splinter has hammered into his sons all these years.

I don't get the repeated complaints about the Turtles looking for Triceratons in the Raphael issue. This does occur in a PREQUEL comic doesn't it? The film itself states "They battled many creatures and foes..." well why is it so hard to accept the Triceratons as among those creatures and foes that they battled?

The new turtles movie is clearly a loose sequel to the ENTIRE Turtles mythos, and I thought the Triceratons were a fine addition.

I think people are ticked off because we're being shown that the turtles have fought Triceratons, went up against Baxter Stockman, And also had seen the Utoms. I don't know about anyone else but I feel pretty damn cheated because we've never gotten those characters in a movie at all besides a nice toss back at the very end or in the prequil comics.
To me that's the reason why but I can't speak for everyone else.
It's nice and all to do these things but I say no thanks not unless your going to go all the way.
