Yeah, the first movie he was definitely Japanese. I prefer that portrayal myself, he looked a little too caucasian in a few of the other mediums.

the man who played the shredder in the first TMNT movie is not japanese.
he's cambodian.

No, but I think we're more referring to his portrayal. The actor may not have been a Japanese national, but the character was shown to be Japanese in origin, and the actor fit those physical and vocal elements pretty well so there was no problem.

Even so, he looks less Caucasian than the other human characters, at least in the eyes.

...are you just bringing these questions up to bash the new toon, oldshreddersgirl? I'd suggest you actually watch a decent chunk of the new series instead of just a few episodes before asking questions like these. Just a thought... it took me a while to get used to the new 'toon too, but now I love it just as much as the old one.

Amen to that. I didn't like the new show in the very beginning.

Now I'm digging it.

Is this a serious thread? Yes he is Japanese. If he doesn't look the part, use your imagination. Or stop overanalysing meaningless details.

How is it a discussion? Everyone either says he is or he isn't, and he's obviously meant to be anyway. You had your answer at the first post.

Fuuny thing about old toon Shredder, for a Japanese guy that moved to New York, he sure has a good grasp on the English language, with a full line of insults, wordplay, jokes and puns. Talk about fluent. Even Splinter still speaks kinda/sorta in that 'Japanese guy trying his best to speak English fluently' kinda tone.

Producer: "Kids are stupid. We could get Shredder to speak with a Latin-American dialect, and those yuppie little brats would still gobble it up."

How many times this ran through my head as a child...

...old toon shredder spoke with a japanese accent? No. He did not. His voice actor was the guy that played "uncle Phil" on Fresh Prince, oldshreddergirl. No Japanese accent there :D

I know they're not all light-skinned, but sometimes he looked African-American to me (like the episode where he turned into Mikey...).
