View Full Version : NO-bad review from hollywood reporter

Even CGI doesn't pump much life into these kung fu critters. The new film's calculations show the most in the mix of tame violence to maintain a PG rating and youthful humor and a skateboarding sequence to keep the appeal broad. Ultimately, the movie seems driven more by the need to keep a toy line and franchise alive than any creative inspiration.

What kind of review was that? Most of it was a synopsis of the movie. They didn't give any good reasons why the movie was "bad". There was as much thought put into that, as there is in an average Fox sitcom.

Exactly, it's completley bogus.
1. The review obviously has never seen/read any of the interviews with Kevin that show how passionate he is about the franchise.
2. they only remember the Turtles from the old show, and thats clouding they're judgement some.
He gives plenty of reasons as to why he didn't like it. The plastic-y animation, the contrived family values, the afterthought villainy, the recycled sci-fi.........................
.............or are you guys automatically bashing his review because it's something you don't wanna hear?

It would have been helpfull if he gave better examples. Like I said, most of the review was just a synopsis of the movie.

I'm not worried about it. For every single douchebag reviewer who can't remember anything beyond Bebop or Vanilla Ice there's probably a buttload of kids who have the exact opposite opinion. So Hollywood Reporter can go rot in Hell for not taking about 20 minutes to find an interview with Kevin or look at a short synopsis of the previous TMNT movies to get an idea of where this is going.

Heh, good point. I think I may feel the same way about the latter three complaints when I see the movie (especially the contrived family values, if that is indeed what happens). Although the animation looks good.

Family Values was a big part of the whole movie, without it, the story wouldn't have worked. Contrived? It was overspoken in certain scenes, otherwise it was well done. Can't please everyone all the time. I think this movie did awsome in trying to level the pleasing all round.
As to plasticy animation, it was not the absolute best CGI animation I've seen, but alot of that was contributed to the fact that the models were kept in a semi-cartoon state so in all honesty, the animation at times, did look a bit (but not too much) unrealistic.
I personally believe that a few weapons hit the ground a little to flat (no bounce at all) but those were little things. You can however tell that even the CGI artists/animators were spending ALOT of time/care on the main focus of the movie :D.
I read the article. While I don't personally agree with everything they say, I can see their point/view.

NEVER listen to those "professional" critics, they see nothing but bad in movies like these.
WHen people were coming out, we'd ask them if they liked it...ALL of the folks we asked said it was good. So...the general public views it as a good movie.

You know, you are right about some of them critics, if not 90% of them. All they really do, is to concentrate on what they did not like about the movie, and to actually look for something to be wrong. I thought critics should be people who like to watch movies, not the opposite. And it's beyond me why people worry about what the (pros) think. They are not of the majority, at least not in my neck of the woods. I'd say. listen to what the regular joe says. Word of mouth, the animation is kick ass, the personalities and voices are as perfect as one can get. The only thing that people seem to not like is the sub plot of the monsters. But I think they wanted to save the foot rebuild stories for a sequel (if there is one) where they can produce a PG-13 flick as opposed to a PG one.

I read that so called review several days ago. The reviewer also states that this is the first foray for the TMNT into CGI.
See..these reporters (like that other idiot reviewer who states that Next Mutation was a cartoon) need to do what is called RESEARCH. Otherwise, he would have known that this was indeed not the first try out at CGI due to the proposed CGI tv series that you can go see the pilot of at the official TMNT site.

Careful guys. You're sounding way too defensive. If someone didn't like it that's fine. I saw it and would only give it like a C. I still love the turtles, and it was great seeing them on the big screen, but if you thought this was going to be a hit with the critics you were deluding yourselves. It was really cheesey, but the name sort of implies that, or at least it used to. I don't think they ever say Teenage or Mutant in the movie. I thought the name was a great part of the turtles, i only abbreviate because I'm lazy, but for the movie I think they should have kept it spelled out. I think the CG made it pretty obvious that it wasn't going to be the same as the first film and that this would be a new thing mostly for little kids. Anyway enough of that tangent.
I disagree with a lot of the review but agree with others. The animation models themselves didn't give much to work with, I really REALLY hate that April. I remember the cover from the beginning of the original comics, with April and the guys standing around, then think of the movie April and really wonder where it went wrong. A lot the characters seemed more like charicatures of their old selves. Even though Pete was involved, if you're expecting anything like the mirage comics... DON'T. Go in expecting Turtles meets Power Rangers and your expectations won't be lowered like mine were.

Now thats not right..it's only the critics job to watch the movie and review, he doesnt have to research it or it's creators. TMNT isn't for everyone, nor is any film. Continuing to bash critics for hating something you like gets to be pretty hypocritical when you know that if this guy gave a good review, you'd be praising it, whether he did his research or not, which is not his job.

Good point, sys. I never pay much attention to what reviewers OR critics say about a movie myself.
For instance, the critics all raved about how good the first Dukes of Hazzard movie was (and most of them denigrated the wonderfully funny TV series that inspired it), but to me (after reluctantly agreeing to watch the DVD release with my niece), it confirmed my opinion that it was nothing but a idiotic, decidedly UN-funny and ridiculous parody of the original series itself. jessica Simpson as Daisy and Willy Nelson as Uncle Jesse were just....wrong, that's the long and the short of it.)
And besides, IF you look at the track record of MOST reviewers and critic, 9 times out of 10, the movie that they pan or put down will be the most popular with the fans. The difference between them and us is that WE go to a movie because we love the characters and/or story. THEY watch them 9and most of the time DIS them) because they're PAID to (supposedly) be objective, but IF the don't like a flick, there's no way in shell that they're gonna say anything good about it.
And that's MY $0.02 cents on the matter!
Oooops! Times up, peeps! See yas all tonight sometime!

If the monsters, which the powerful Max Winters (Patrick Stewart) has been trying to find with the help of the Foot Clan and the story's resuscitated stone soldiers, have been wreaking havoc on the earth for three millennia, why is this the first time anyone has heard anything about them?More importantly, why are they all chillin' in the Big Apple?
I thought the monsters were supposed to be creatures from urban legends : bigfoot, jersey devil, vampire monster etc.
plus there was a line in the novel where Winters explains why the monsters are suddenly showing up in NYC. He explained it as their animal instinct leading them there because of the stars lineing up, about to open the gateway to where they originally came from--did it get cut from the film?

Variety don't like it either
http://www.variety.com/review/VE1117933101.html?categoryid=1263&cs=1
Conceived for fans but dumbed down for tots, "TMNT" takes one of the most curious comicbook phenoms of the '80s and translates it to yet another platform: a PG-rated all-CG toon. Animation quality is leagues beyond the hand-drawn style that launched the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to popularity, and the storyline is no shallower than "300" (even if ripped turtle shells have nothing on Spartan abs), but pic lacks the personality that made these animated action figures so appealing 20 years ago. Kids will devour this like anchovy-free pizza, while nostalgia-driven kidult attendance should spell sequels for this "cash cowabunga."

Don't worry about the critics. If the movie is any good, (judging by the clips, it looks like to be quite the TMNT crowd pleaser) than it will be fine. Just go and watch it so you can form your own opinion.
I'm going because I like to see the Turtles on the big screen. The characters look to be down pat, and the cgi is awesome. And you have that big climatic Leo vs Raph fight. How cool is that?

I assumed that clarified that at the very beginning. I missed like the first 2-3 minutes because my dumbass brother HAD to have a $5 icee.
If it wasn't in those 3 minutes, then they don't say anything about it in the film. They don't give any of the monsters names, and the "jersey devil" had about as much screen time as slimer did in the original ghostbusters movie.
The first reviewer was fine in my opinion, but the second link posted was harsh and not really proffessional. Who uses the word "lame" when writing movie reviews for a living? He brings up good points but doesn't execute his writing well.
I kind of agree with Variety too. I think maybe they should have let TMNT die down a bit and then boosted it with a movie, then again maybe they wouldn't be able to get the greenlite then. It was good and the Raph vs Leo fight was AWESOME. Leo's my fav but the outcome of that fight was perfect!

You got it, brotha. People who use the, "They just don't know about the subject!" excuse are in heavy denial.
Everyone needs to just stop slamming on critics at this point. As long as you like the movie, who cares? And just because it's the turtles doesn't mean we all need to ignore all the things that may be negative about the movie. I really think people need to stop trying to convince themselves they'll enjoy the movie, and just see it and find out for themselves.

Does anyone know how many "urban legend" monsters are in the movie, and which ones they are?
The Legend of Yaotl book lists the monsters:
Bigfoot, Yeti, Lupa the werewolf, Lethargo (a slothlike creature), Jersey Devil, Succubor the vampire bat, Spitex (a lama type creature), Vixx the fox, Azooti the Puma, Pict the wild boar, Arkadin the Coati Mundi (yes must watch out for the evil rabid south american racoon! oh noes!! ), Weeb (a frog), and Cretaco the giant Croc.
Here are links to info on the monsters:
Kitsune (Vixx the Fox): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kitsune
Jersey Devil:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jersey_Devil
Werewolf:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Werewolf
Cretaco the Crocadile (IMO really Sobek):
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sobek
Pict the Boar:
The myths/legends of the boar are well lots. One of the forms of Vishnu was a boar (course another form was a turtle *L*), In Norse myth the boar was Frayr's symbol (one named Gullinbursti pulled his chariot *L*), the boar was also a symbol for the Moon goddess in Greek myth.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boar#Mythology_and_symbolism
Azooti the Puma:
Now I for one can't find a single usage of a Puma/Mountain Lion/Couger in myth or legend... however that doesn't mean there isn't any. After all the TMNT encountered the Jaguar god in Brazil in the comics and there's the Panther god in Marvel comics.
Weeb the frog:
In Siberian myth the earth was formed on the back of a giant frog...instead of a turtle.
http://www.mythencyclopedia.com/Sa-Sp/Siberian-Mythology.html
Succubor the Vampire Bat:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vampire
Coatimundi:
WTF?? Seriously... WTF did a Coatimundi do to get such recognition??
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coatimundi
Lethargo:
No myth...just a pun on the name.... Sloths are slow so his name is lethargo...get it?? hahaha... Anyways... Lethargo is a giant sloth.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giant_Sloth
Bigfoot:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bigfoot
Yeti (note: The TMNT befriended Yeti in the Archie series.):
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yeti
Spitex the Llama: (another pun...cuz they spit when in heat)

Plus, he can't spell Raphael.
I couldn't help it I wrote him a comment. I was polite but pointed out the fact that he had really missed the entire point of the film. I also pointed out he spelled Raphael wrong. :P

But the line about tmnt not being smart is really ignorant.
No, it's true. Ninja Turtles movies have always been popcorn flicks. They're not made to make you think, or make you come to some sudden revelation. They're made for you to have fun, laugh and get a kick out of some cool action. That's it.
The true ignorance comes from all the people here who can't seem to accept that different people have different opinions. You all need to take a step back and realize that we are the hardcore fan base, most of you are going to defend this movie to the bitter end, even if it's the worst piece of TMNT related entertainment to ever be released. It's their job to go in and review a movie on their terms. You all act like they have some personal vendetta against the franchise, or they're just stupid people. The guy doesn't get the point of the film? Wha? Isn't the point of the film to entertain, one way or the other?
You're all going into this movie with a heavy heavy bias, these people are just going into it as a person who watches and reviews movies. You all need to stop coming up with excuses to protect a movie that most of us haven't even seen yet.

I think I have an idea of why Logic Donny hates you.
This movie is going to be entertaining. Nothing else. No deep plot, no detailed look into the disturbed mind of Raphael. No fanservice whatsoever. It'll be like the other three movies, that were produced based on the fun-loving aura of the TV show. It's supposed to be fun, not deep. It's the fans who made it that way. The comics, I do know, had some interesting takes on the turtles, but honestly...the TV show was better, and it should've stayed as that kind of humor.

Well, sorry you don't like my outlook on things but I see this as much a comic book movie as Spider-Man or 300. Every review I've seen of comic movies that I actually respect, whether the reviewer liked the movie or not, tends to at least make proper reference to previous movie outings of the franchise (if there is a previous outing) or a small look the source material for the franchise itself (namely the comics).
However, just about every bad review I've seen so far comes from someone who can't tell you which movie Vanilla Ice was in or why Krang, Bebop and Rocksteady, and the Technodrome aren't going to be in this new one. At least when reviews of Spider-Man had any complaining about Green Goblin's costume, the organic web shooters, or how Mary Jane Watson fits into the story they complained because they wanted to see it stick closer to the source material. When sequels came along, bad reviews at least took a look at what happened previously so they weren't completely lost.
I haven't seen the Rocky movies in a really long time. However, if I were going to do a review of Rocky Balboa I'd at least take a look at the synopsis of what happened in the previous Rocky movies if I didn't have the time to watch them all beforehand so I'd know the history of what I was getting ready to take a look at.
We know that little kids who are going to see this probably dont read movie reviews and bad reviews aren't going to affect them at all. The movie Hook isn't regarded as one of Spielberg's better movies in terms of reviews and stuff but as a kid I really liked the movie and had no clue that it was not doig well review-wise. But we already know that TMNT was a movie made not only for the kids but longtime fans as well. It's the longtime fans that are probably going to see these reviews so, for the sake of these older fans that read the reviews the reviewer should at least know what is supposed to make it so good for those longtime fans. How would they do that? By at least reading this (http://www.ninjaturtles.com/movies/movie1.htm), this (http://www.ninjaturtles.com/movies/movie2.htm), and unfortunately (IMO) this (http://www.ninjaturtles.com/movies/movie3.htm) if not take the time to watch the movies. Otherwise the reviewer doesn't really know what he's looking at.
At least when Angry Video Game Nerd gave TMNT 3 a really bad review (Part 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z02d9e4vvT0), Part 2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=te7NwAacJ8w), may be NSFW due to language) he knew where the previous two and the cartoon series were coming from before going into TMNT 3 and makes sure to explain that so the viewers are up-to-speed, too. I don't literally agree with him on everything but I find it to be a damn good reivew... especially for a guy who doesn't even get paid to watch movies and his Internet fame comes from reviewing video games nobody even really plays anymore.
So, what's really not right after looking at the above TMNT 3 review is someone who gets paid to talk out of his ass about something he really doesn't know about whether he likes it or not.

dude I've read the entire story I'm fine with what goes on for it and as I said I agreed with a few things he said from the things I've seen.
He is talking about tmnt as a whole not just the movies thats's what was rude. If he said only the cartoon and movie were silly then yes I would agree on that even the 2k3 toon has goofie bits. And I'm quite fine with that but tmnt does have some serious momements. But like I always say I'm quite happy with a fine mix of silly and serious I think to much of either is bad. :)
Me personally I'm fine with others opinions of crap like I said as long as they don't start insulting one another to get a point across because it's really not needed.

At some point the team stops bickering and starts beating things up together, but there’s never that moment where Leonardo takes charge and shows off his snazzy new leadership skills."
That is a damn good point that bothered me, too, when I read the novelization. All that time building up Leo, and then he's captured and Raph plays leader?

I thought you had a fair point Peanut.
The main problem with the movie is that no explanation is offered to casual or non TMNT fans as to how these monsters ended up in New York, or as to who Karai is.
So I can understand why some reviews are going to be fairly harsh, you can't just stick something in a story with no explanation and expect the audience just too except it.
Probably not the best example, but imagine watching a movie were half way through the main Human character wakes up with a Cadbury's Cream Egg for a head, with no reason given as to why this has happened, you'd be a bit miffed and frustrated, well and probably freaked out lol!
Anyway the monsters just appear and start causing havoc, with the biggest of the lot chasing the Cowabunga Carl van through the streets destroying buildings, and yet strangely failing to alert the authorities.
So there are some pretty annoying plot holes that hamper ones enjoyment, as a fan I liked it but I wasn't fully satisfied.
The Raph VS Leo fight is the best action scene in the movie, Ninja VS Ninja works far better than monster Vs Ninja, oh and if you're hoping for a decent fight between the Turtles and The Foot, well all you get is pretty much what you've seen in that 1 minute uninterrupted clip.

Well I've often noticed while following movies on ComingSoon.net that when a movie jumps into the top 5 most page views before release, it's got some huge buzz going for it. TMNT just hit 4 on their list yesterday. On top of that, they're going into the weekend all by their lonesome. Their only competition will be The Hills Have Eyes 2, which obviously attracts a much different audience than TMNT will. CG movies usually pull in good numbers thanks to kids anyways, and those usually don't have a highly regarded and established license behind them. Of course, 300 is still going to have a strong follow-up, with all the buzz still surrounding the movie after two weeks. I'm hoping for at least one really really strong weekend, followed by a good week and some decent weekends to follow.

Well actually it's a pretty stiff competition...the TMNT are gonna have many films to fight with as there are a total of 6 films debuting this weekend:
1. TMNT (of course)
2. Hills Have Eyes 2 (say what you will but sequels and horror have been doing well)
3. Reign Over Me (Adam Sandler usually equals big box office $)
4. Shooter (action pic with Marky Mark)
5. Pride (not a drama but a daarrammmaaa bout a swim team...ok not big box office material lol :P)
6. Last Mimzy (kid's flick...although never even heard of the thing lol)
Plus 300 and Wild Hogs (don't laugh it's gotten at least $100 million so far lol) are going strong, and Meet the Robinsons is coming out the week after...so TMNT has a large fight ahead of them.
Although i DO hope TMNT wins this battle....I mean if Wild Hogs can make $100 million?!? why not TMNT? lol although i haven't seen Wild Hogs so who knows maybe it deserves its' success lol.
Anyway congrats to the lucky cats who got to see the flick early.

TMNT's real competition is Shooter and 300. Hills Have Eyes 2 doesn't seem to be highly anticipated and releasing horror movies in March isn't exactly very good. Look at Dead Silence, it's from the guys who made Saw and it barely cracked 7 million. Last Mimzy looks like a come and go movie, highly forgettable, and Adam Sandler dramas don't do as well as his comedies(see Punch Drunk Love for reference). Shooter however looks like a movie people will see because of Mark Whalberg and the fact it has explosions and shootings, and 300 is still riding the wave of phenominal buzz. However, TMNT has a very large fan base with kids, teens AND adults waiting to see this movie. In the end, most likely TMNT will come out on top with a fairly large opening weekend, with Shooter in 2nd, 300 at 3rd, Hills, Reign, and so forth.

Shooter is nothing original and should be discarded (I've seen movies like that about 50 times or more) as does the Last Mimzy. 300 I agree is an incredible film which I doubt would have run its race already. Hill Have Eyes 2 may be its biggest competitor even though it's another horror remake sequel but people (for some reason) just can't resist them no matter how bad they may be. Still, I think TMNT can be #1.

I'm pulling for TMNT for #1 at the box office. Its a household name with a large fan base and it appeals to wide range of the young to old demographic. If Ghost Rider and Wildhogs can make $100 million, then TMNT should to. Those were bad movie and it still made money. From what I seen, TMNT looks like its going to rock. I think its good on warner bros part to release it early before the big summer blockbuster films, otherwise, it may be overlooked.

Cool, I liked reading that review, it was well done. Except for the first half focusing on 300 when it's a review for TMNT. I disagree with critics all of a sudden not getting the cultural shift in movies. They've never been ones to give praise to movies like 300, it's really nothing new.

Now thats not right..it's only the critics job to watch the movie and review, he doesnt have to research it or it's creators.
To the contrary. A decent critic needs to put every film into its own context. Otherwise all you're getting is some guy's opinion rather than an attempt at an objective review accessible to a general audience.
He seems to completely miss the theme behind the villainy itself. Calling it an afterthought when it clearly isn't. Who even saw Karai set up as a villain beyond Max Winters himself? If you look closely you can see a juxtaposition of Winters and his old generals falling apart as a 'family' while the Turtles come together as one. That's a bit above your usual film aimed at children.
I quite frankly enjoyed the twists and turns as that kept it quite fresh and unrepetitive while the reviewer seemed a little offended by them, claiming kids might be confused. Toy Story 2 was for kids and there was a sudden 'twist' in that.
They also seem to miss the fact that this film is part of a series and future sequels are hinted at. I think the review is poorly researched and a little heavy-handed.

Wow, that is deep. I can't wait to see this movie.
On a sadder note, on Rottentomatoes.com, TMNT now has a 20% rating. I know what really matters is that we, the fans, enjoy it; it's not nearly as important that a bunch of critics who haven't done their research enjoy it. But critics do exert some influence. Rotton Tomatoes is a decent site. I visit here and there, but it's one flaw is that it will include anybody who has there own domain, website, and writes reviews on it. You will have people on there who have absolutely no idea what they are talking about, and often, it's like "Joe Nobody from MovieBS.com" never even saw the movie he is reviewing. Sure they have the right to review movies too..everyone does, but should these non-professional critics be part of the same rating scale as professional critics?
And, what, like 3 of the 7 reviewers were non-professional critics. In fact, the only professional reviews I saw were from Variety and Hollywood Reporter, from a great deal of reviews I've seen from both of them, they tend to be more negative than positive. I too, have that same problem, being the movie buff that I am. But I often tend to find more hypocrisy from reviewers like those.
They'll like one movie and hate a movie just like it..but a good critic will include enough information that the reader will have an idea whether or not he'll like it.
But then they make more mistakes. Critics should never compare one movie to another. It should be about that movie, and if it wasn't the movie it could have been, then I understand, but comparing TMNT to Doogal is totally unfair!
Truth is.I will support whether or not a critic likes the movie..and if they didnt understand the movie..FINE! But, the problem is, they hardly cover how they thought the movie could have been better, or how they were disappointed. It's about building it with negative or positive conotations that support the negative or positive review they are writing.
So when you start to read that review, from that first paragraph, you will know whether or not they liked that movie...but once you've finished that last paragraph, you still wouldn't have understood why they didn't like that movie!
Honestly, though..this talk about plasticy animation and the film only being about selling those toys (ten bucks says we'll hear the same stuff from the reviews when Transformers comes out!)..Now come on! The animation is amazing! The monster story might be weak, but the Leo/Raph/Family story should be enough to signal that isn't about selling toys!

Yeah, from what I've seen, this movie isn't meant to sell toys at all, really. It's meant to please the fans.

They added another review which dropped it down to 13%, this one is from the village voice and is the most repulsive review out of the bunch! "Unlikely to achieve BFF status with the MMORPG set, this CGI feature is light on the LOL factor, heavy on the ADD action scenes, and, like, TOOIFM (Totally Out Of Its Freakin' Mind)."
I clicked to read his review, and thats the only criticism he gives. It's just one paragraph, and most of it is a description of the plot. And that quote, that criticism makes hardly any sense. He's comparing TMNT to Everquest and World of Warcraft :ohwell:

Yeah I agree, that review does nothing.
What I find funny is a lot of the "critics" say it's not as good as the live action films, but then you go and check the older films and they too have crappy ratings. Make up your minds, damn it.
Seriously it wasn't THAT bad, when the movie opens in the USA hopefully we'll be able to expect some better reviews. If not that, well lets just hope it makes a lot of money. And if it doesn't? Well lets hope it sells a lot of toys/video games/merchandise.
I still feel that this new tmnt series will only improve with sequels. I'd like to see it get to that point though.
Reviews like this always tick me off. Let me tell ya something - stay away from ANY reviews of ANY sort until you see the movie. THEN read the reviews. You enjoy the movie a lot more and you have your own opinion to compair things to when you go through the review. Trust me, I read a review for "Dead Man's Chest", and it made the movie seem worse than what it really was.

Superhero Hype! gave TMNT a rating of 7/10. Read the full review here:
http://www.comingsoon.net/news/reviewsnews.php?id=19478
I find this part interesting:
"I will add that a lot of the footage from "TMNT" that I saw at the San Diego Comic-Con was cut from this version. The scene where the kids at the birthday party beat down Michelangelo was significantly reduced, and the part where the kid kicks him in the crotch was totally eliminated. I hated to see it go because it was an indication that the film was a little funnier and edgier than the theatrical cut. Maybe we'll see it on DVD."

I found this part funny
At the same time, the mysterious billionaire Max Winters has hired The Hand, now led by Karai, to hunt down 13 monsters that are running loose in the city.
weird to that they gave it a 7 but did'nt really say anything negative about it. infact they said
I can't say I had any real gripes about this film

Superhero Hype's review was decent. I think they gave it a 7 out of 10 because they thought it could have been a little edgier, which is the consensus I got from the little paragraph about the Comic Con footage.

Once again, though, it was a review by someone who was already somewhat familiar with the genre.
I'd still like to see some positive reviews from some average movie-goers rather than fans.
Regardless, i'll be watching it this weekend! Woohoo!! :D

Saw the film last Sunday and I feel I have to defend it, so here's my reply to the review. Warning: it might get a bit spoilerish, but I haven't written anything that hasn't either been written on the boards or in the review.
...the characters look like plastic dolls...
Now normally I'm not a big fan of CGI. I don't see the point or good that comes out of creating CGI characters or props for a live action film when you can just as well use or create the real thing. However, TMNT is not a live action film. It never tries to look realistic. It is an animation, reminiscent of PIXAR's The Incredibles, though far superior where attention to detail is concerned - especially during the Latin America scene. I'm rather tired of hearing critics whine that CGI does not look real enough - neither does 2D animation, yet children and adults the world over adore it.
...Other than a few sequences in Latin America, "TMNT" sticks close to home -- meaning the rooftops, sewers and back alleys of nighttime Manhattan...
Well, I would think so. The third movie didn't go down all that well, did it? Naturally the filmakers want to stick closer to home with the premiere of their new TMNT movie. Perhaps it's not what some hardcore fans would like, but it's what the majority of old fans want to see e.g. sewers, ninja turtles leaping over rooftops, big epic fight scenes etc. TMNT is also clever enough to put a lot of focus on the characters - mainly that of the rocky relationship between Raph and Leo.
I don't disagree completely with the review; the film does have it's faults, but the review is a little too nitpicky. Frankly I'm not surprised. TMNT is old but the Turtles are still enjoying success (just look at the new cartoon - I see kids carrying new TMNT lunchboxes all the time), but like all movies/cartoons which have stood the test of time, TMNT will have to accept the bitching nitpicking reviews that come with it. The Hollywood movie industry, indeed the Western media-world in general, do not like old. They want fresh and new, which is why 2D animation has been shunted out the door and indeed the reason why CGI has replaced four dudes in turtle suits. So I think we can all expect more 'TMNT is past it!' reviews in the coming months.
...Ultimately, the movie seems driven more by the need to keep a toy line and franchise alive than any creative inspiration...
If this were the case, the movie would have been louder, faster, more action orientated and less character driven. The movie was made to please fans. Perhaps this is a flaw because you do need at least a little prior knowledge to know who the heck April and Casey are. But they're not integral to the plot, so it doesn't matter too much.
Considering the pressure on the filmakers, what with TMNT's immense fanbase and people like me who look lovingly back on the characters which mark their childhood, the film addressed a great deal and did not shy away from deeper issues. It's action packed and scary enough to fire up the younger audience's imagination and keep the older teens and adults entertained. Best of all, TMNT doesn't constantly throw in painfully witty jokes that most children's films do nowadays just to keep the mums and dads happy, and it's certainly not patronising to kids. I thought they'd have Mikey annoy the smeg out of us, but he had his touching moments (I love that boy ^^)
In conclusion I get the feeling this film is testing the waters and that perhaps future sequels will be more daring. I agree with some points in the review, but overall I find it very cynical. Obviously the bloke didn't grow up in the 80s. Douchebag.

the entire 'its made to sell toys ' thing seems like such an easy cheap shot to take because of the properties past
Starkiller
03-21-2007, 03:11 PM
My thoughts exactly, it was a very cheap shot. The critic has no solid evidence to back this statement up. If it was made to sell toys, this movie would have been out a year after the release of the new cartoon in order to catch the new young audience.

It's down to 11% at Rottentomatoes.com. Fortunately, this this the most ****ing ignorant and whiny review yet (http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,20015584,00.html). Unfortunately, every review exerts influence.
People need to grow up and realise that a movie can be good, even if it's not what they expected. I'm off to be depressed now.

Ah, don't get down about it dude. Most critics are pretentious and nitpicky and like I said earlier TMNT is a prime target for bad reviews because it has strong ties to the 80s/90s and is therefore percieved as being too old and out of date. But the fact that the TMNT comics/old toon/movies/new toon is still so successful flys in the face of that theory. Perhaps this fact gets up critic's noses.
What I'd like to know is what exactly is so bad about 'old'? Stupid materialistic world. I blame Thatcher!

Positive review from movieonline.ca:
http://moviesonline.ca/movie_review_detail.php?id=6731
Most of the cool sites from the online movie community really enjoy the movie while the critics from newspapers bash it. Is is just me or that the critics offer no real constructive critism and are just bashing it for sake of trying to come up with clever wordplay?
"A throughline of organized violence permeates "TMNT" as a baby step toward preparing youngsters to become soldiers in America's never-ending war on humanity."
The guy who made this comment at rottentomatoes is getting condemn from lots of people. You know for sure this guy can't be taken serious...
I think what it comes to down is that the older generation who can't see past animation outside of the usual cheerful-animal/object talking-voice-by-celebrity-movie (I'm so sick of that stuff) will not like TMNT while the generation who grew up on TMNT and are open to idea of a darker, action-packed animation will like it.

Heehee, I had a nightmare that NOW magazine (Toronto's "alternative" paper) gave it one star. It probably will only give it that much, actually.
It's down to 17% on Rottentomatoes. I don't really care anymore; I'm just keeping us up-to-date for the hell of it.

The local paper here gave it one and a half, but a cool guy who works at the paper interviewed turtles fans in the area and most people were pumped for it except maybe one guy. The turtles got a blurb on the front cover, which was cool, and a bunch of nice colorful graphics, so even if it's a bad review it's getting advertised nicely :)

Then on Saturday, call in sick for work, watch the Ninja Turtles on Fox and Cartoon Network (since they are supposed to be doing a marathon, right?) then go watch the movie again on Saturday with my mom and aunt, who have been fans of the Turtles despite them being in their mid fifties.
I'm gonna be having the freaking Turtles in my dreams, and coming out of my ears by the time this month is over.
Then the next big film, Transformers.:D

I don't know about People magazine and I don't give it much credit at all when it comes to movie reviews but did they have to start their review with ...
"TMNT not that they have been missed, but the masked Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles return to the big screen"
Was that really necessary? I mean that isn't even a real review they got a paragraph and it starts out in such a derogatory tone...Oh well I have seen more good reviews then bad ones...can't wait till 9:35!!!!
