I've just been to see TMNT, the credits rolled about 45 minutes ago and I left the cinema with a smile on my face.
You're gonna like it, you're gonna like it a lot.
I'll start by talking about the visuals, they look absolutely beautiful, stunning in fact, and any doubts I had about the design of the Human characters faded away.
The showdown between Raph and Leo is incredible, the way the rain rolls off their skin had my jaw on the floor, but I would have liked the fight to have been a bit longer.
In my opinion CGI was the right way to go, and Imagi deserve an Oscar nomination or win for their hard work.
The voice cast did really well too, I thought they all suited their relevant characters well so no complaints there, even though I was a little unsure of Mako at first he quickly changed my mind.
The Turtles are great together, and just seeing them up on the big screen again sent a shiver down my spine.
I was a bit negative towards the idea of Cowabunga Carl before I seen the film, but now I would actually have liked there to have been a longer scene with mikey as him, and Mikey was great in the movie, they got his personality just right.
I'd say the only weak point of the film is concerning the monster plot, and it's been said before.
It leads to a plot hole that irritated me, the generals are explained, but the monsters just turn up out of the blue in New York, it's like a piece of the movie is missing to explain how they got there.
Also I'd liked to have seen more of Karai and the foot, but hopefully we'll get a sequel where they'll have a bigger part to play.
I'm gonna go see it again next weekend, and probably again, I just hope it is successful enough to get the go ahead for a sequel.
Because what's on show here feels like it could set up an even better movie, so fingers crossed it's a huge hit, it deserves to be.

Right I thought it would be an ideal time with some of us in the UK having the opportunity to view the film this weekend post up their own reviews/opinions on the movie.
Since i'm no film critic or professional reviewer I will get to the point and tell you what I liked and did not about the movie.
Of course I will start off by saying, the animation is absolutely gob smacking. As many have said previously, the fight between Leo and Raph is a CGI milestone that Pixar haven't ever reached. The rain trickling down raphs face and behind his bandana in a close up and being able to see blemishes in his skin were just amazing. Much Kudos to the animators for this. Coincidentally the Raph and Leo scene is undoubtedly the best scene in the movie, the animation is just the icing on the cake. No TMNT fan old or new would be dissapointed with this.
Which brings me on to the voice acting. Raph and Leo are top class. Like I say the fight scene is amazing in animation and acting, you can really sense tension between them that I haven't ever witnessed in any other TMNT series or movie before, it's most impressive. Sarah Michelle Gellar wasn't as bad as some may think, the pauses in the featurette were very much intentional in my opinion. I feel that Zhang Ziyi is possibly the one voice that made me feel a little underwhelmed in places, although it could be me nitpicking over the accent. Every other actor was top notch, Patrick Stewart is the man.
Right, storyline. Yes the weak part of it all. Like many, I like very little scifi in my Turtles and kind of felt this was a bit hammed up as many would expect. The opening and very end are the only things that could make you cringe at the storyline, every other part of the movie will just leave you forgetting about this and see the movie for the pure entertainment it is.
In Conclusion, I feel this movie was the update I was hoping for on one level. The turtles themselves are fantastic and are the best animated incarnations I have seen with voice actors to suit. But I feel a little dissapointed that the story wasn't more centered around the rebuild of the foot, with a better introduction to Karai for people who have not seen the 2K3 series. If they were to leave out the Sci Fi element but center it more around Karai i'm sure it could pick up some more of the old toon fans but still please the 2K3 and comic lovers without going over old ground with the Shredder. I'm sure if they were to move in that direction we would see some more ace fighting sequences involving more human based enemies, there is something not quite as satisfying when seeing the turtles take on big monsters compared to a big fight with the foot or a skilled fighter like Karai or the Shredder.
So overall if you're a TRUE Turtle fan then i'm certain you would love it. However if you're part of the old cartoon and are questioning why there is no Shredder, Krang, Bebop or Rocksteady then I think although you may enjoy the action and be happy to see the turtles on the screen again, you may leave a little dissapointed.
If any has any questions then feel free to ask, but be warned it is about 1 am and i'm nearly falling asleep at my keyboard.

can you name some of the nods to previous turtles continuity and also i've gotta have a rundown of the Leo and Raph fight. Also when all is said and done after the fight--how do they react to each other?
jezza
03-17-2007, 07:24 PM
In terms of nods to previous turtles continuity most of it is shown in the IGN clips with Casey's reference to high sticking and the sceptor in the goods room at the end. Other than that there isn't much, although we hear a little about how the Shredder is defeated in the narration by Fishburne. I also remember someone saying that Silver Sentry is meant to be mentioned in the film, although I never heard it if so.
As for the Leo Raph fight break down. Be warned it's a heavy spoiler
Leo corners the Nightwatcher on the roof after chasing him in one of the most awesome set pieces. Leo goes into a speech on how he is grateful for his efforts but would like for him to leave it up to him and the Turtles to take out the bad guys. Which is particularly strange as I can't see his logic behind it :ohwell: Leo also hasn't caught it's Raph despite being the shape of a Turtle.
Half way through Leo's speech Raph/Nightwatcher gets bored and whips out his chain trying to take Leo down from all angles, as he is doing this Leo is talking down to him and dodging all attacks telling him that anger and hot headedness won't get him anywhere.
Raph finally gets frustrated, drops the chain and puts up his fists. This is where Leo says "Finally, some excitement". The two go at it. Punches, roundhouse kicks and some awesome fight choreography ensue with Raph missing a punch and then Leo doing the final uppercut shown in the TV spot, taking off Raph's helmet. Leo doesn't see it's Raph and walks up to him continuing his speech from earlier. Then we see Leo's expression as he realises it's Raph (yet again, great animation showing facial expressions) "what? no!" Raph stands up and goes into the speech shown on the IGN video.
Raph takes out his sais to hear Leo say "Don't do this". They clash, we see some awesome weapon use with some very near misses and some of which are obviously intentionally held back. They obviously want to go all out but really care for each other not to seriously injure one another. finally Leo goes at Raph with both katanas and Raph catches them with bot his sais in a lock. They both tense up trying to fight each other off. We then see Raph get really ticked off turn in his sais, destroy Leo's swords. Leo looks on amazed, Raph knocks him down and takes a stab at his head with his Sai and misses at the last second. Leo looks up in disbelief while Raph is angry and very upset and decides to run away almost in tears. I felt somewhat very sorry for Raph at this point, yet Leo is the one who gets the worst of it. You will see what I mean when you see the following part..
Hope this helps :)

so even though they kick the crap out of each other, they are both holding back because they don't want to hurt the other. how crazy is that :D
jezza
03-17-2007, 07:37 PM
It's kind of hard to explain but one example of a point during that scene, you see Leo stab his katana upside Raphs head with Raph looking geniunely worried. Leo could have easily taken Raphs head clean off at this point but withdraws. :o Since this is a PG that aint going to happen though :-P
I'm not biased towards Leo or Raph, I like them both, but I would say that Raph is the outright winner of the end battle between them. Leo won the first round before he pissed off Raph by saying he was the better Turtle.

No problem. But don't say I didn't warn you
Once Raph leaves the scene he hears Leo scream out as the Generals have gotten involved and shot him with the same dart they shot Raph with earlier. They take Leo away in a van with Raph chasing after them in every way possible. The van eventually gets too far ahead and he loses them.
Raph then returns to the sewer destroying everything on the way in, throwing down dumbells, all in front of Splinter no less.
Splinter raises his voice and tells him to kneel down. "Now, what is bothering you?". Raph replies with "I understand now why he is the leader, i'm so stupid". "Raphael, what has happened?". Raph shows Splinter Leo's broken swords. Splinters facial expression is that of absolute shock. I have never seen Splinter so concerned before (At first I thought Splinter may have thought that Raph killed him). "They took him" Raph says, Mikey appears in the door way with that upset puppy eye expression you may have seen in the leaked images. Splinter then continues with the "long have we been in hiding" speech
Oh yeah, keep an eye out for Mikey's very amusing sexual innuendo gag at the end of the movie. It had us all in stitches.

Because it looks funny, seeing badass Raph, having to beat up something that's a tenth of his size, with a frying pan, and we hope to see it in the movie.
I cant wait to see the reaction of the audience to Donny being hit on over ther phone. That looks hilarious!

Yes, as I said before. Mikey has a sexual innuendo joke at the end that had me in stitches. It's either that or me and my friends are all dirty minded.
The only other joke I can remember is regarding his work but I wouldn't say it's something that would go over kids heads.

Rooish: Awesome; I'm jealous, Raph! How was the script? And did you feel Don and Mike got good screen time?
I thought the script was good, I didn't notice any bad lines or anything, the Turtles have great chemistry, they really do seem like four brothers that grew up together.
As for Mike and Don, I would have liked to have seen more of them, it is mostly Raph and Leo that get the most screen time, mostly Raph though.
ThemanthatwouldbeRaphael: Isn't that what the Don prequel comic is going to be for?
But I'm glad to see another positive review.
That would be cool if Don's comic explains that!
I was kinda negative about certain things leading up to the movie, I think I was a bit over the top, for example I didn't like the idea of April being a ninja or mikey dressing up as Cowabunga Carl, but both are handled really well so
I feel like a bit of a twit now.
TerranigmaFreak:How did you get to see it early!? Did you bootleg us a copy!?
I went to an advance screening, cinema's all over Ireland were having them for both Patricks day and Sunday. so it wasn't a bootleg copy.
sgtfbomb: With all the clips they are releasing, he wouldnt have to
Yeah the amount of clips being released seems to be getting out of hand, I spoiled certain parts of the movie for myself because I'd looked at so many screenshots and clips.
johnnyblaze: so there has been alot of debate as to the Leo, Raph and Splinter relationship. Can you tell us your thoughts on it and how you liked the resolution?
This is my faveorite storyline of the film, the dialogue and emotion between the three is excellent, as is all the brothers, and the resolution is satisfying.
ThemanthatwouldbeRaphael: Also, could you tell us how was the Casey/April relationship handled?
The movie doesn't explore too much of this, but there's good chemistry between the two, and you get to see them living together, I liked it.
Garou: Perhaps you could answer a small question for me too. DOES Raph smack the Jersey Devil with the frying pan? Or was it cut out of the scene?
No it wasn't cut, Raph does indeed give him a good smack and sends him flying across the room.
It's a good fight that, quite funny.
Raph probably has the most screen time, but he's brilliant, they have his personality perfect.

Yeah the monster storyline is frustrating, it's a shame because the Turtles are portrayed so well, they're perfect.
If the monster plot was a bit more clear and without the holes, it would be a great film instead of just good.

Warhorse: Does Mikey get to use his nunchucks or are they still a no no?
Unfortunately Mikey doesn't get to show off like in the first movie, he does use the Nunchucks but it tends to be when there's a lot going on, so you can't really see him use them properly.
ThemanthatwouldbeRaphael: But how was the Bigfoot/TMNt fight handled?
Yeah I liked that bit, it was fairly exciting, but again the reason for Bigfoot being there will leave a question mark.

I got the opportunity to watch the movie myself about 5 hours ago. I like it alot. And I didn't walk away with any questions. Sure they could have done alot more in the movie... but I believe the whole point in the monsters being in New York is that at the time of the portal opening, they converge on the spot of their beginning (or in our case their arrival to this planet/univers).
I liked the double deception though. Certain people are portrayed as bad guys until towards the end when you see they had better intentions, while others undermine those intentions. I really liked how they dealt with the foot clan and the hint at the sequal at the very end.
I'm reading through the posts here to see who has seen it and see if I got the same impressions from the movie and so far I think we all think alike :D I really want this one on DVD and I hope there is ALOT of extra discs with the making!

No, that would be rather impossible if you look at the models and notice how much more human like they are, bone structure/muscletone/etc, then consider size of the head and size of the shoulders. I've seen the movie, but I don't consider this to be a spoiler. If a mod deems it a spoiler, shoot me.

Raph shows Splinter Leo's broken swords. Splinters facial expression is that of absolute shock.
It wasn't just shock, he looks proper angry at first, and you actually see him compose himself, at first I though he was about to kick Raph's ass! And talking of Splinter, I really dug Mako's voice once I got used to it, but at first I thought he sounded a bit drunk!!
Yep, that's me just back form seeing the film!! It was amazing!!! Ardnealy, Casey doesn't really get much action to be honest, he has his moments but not any epic fighting scenes i'm afraid, but there is some cool Raph/Casey interaction, joking about who is each other's sidekicks and whatnot...
But I feel a little dissapointed that the story wasn't more centered around the rebuild of the foot, with a better introduction to Karai for people who have not seen the 2K3 series.
I kinda dug it, it shows that the foot have been getting built up in secrecy, and it looks like this was their first big job... Plus it was the turtles' first time in meeting Karai, and finding out the foot are back, and what she said at the end about some parts of the past needing resolved or something, leads me to think that the next film (if there ever is!) will be about that...
All in all, I really dug it, I would'nt change any of it. The theatre had a few folks in it, which was nice as I was expecting it to be empty at 11.20am, and even my fiancee really liked it, and she didn't wanna go!

Raphs relationship with his other brothers is similar to that of the 2K3 series, although you see him giving Don more of a hard time than mikey. He spends most of his time asleep or playing Nightwatcher now to give them too much grief

As for the scepter. It is still there, it just has something placed upon it

The one quote that got me and all of my friends laughing was
Mikey - "Ewww, he's in my mouth, he's in my mouth" that was just plain wrong

In what context is that in? I mean, what the hell brought that on? Oh Mikey.
Also, the object on top of the scepter, I have my speculations. Is it:Raph's Nightwatcher helmet?

I have a question--someone mentione dthat the turtles only fought the Foot near the end. So did the sequence that we got a clip of during the trailer of Leo fighting Karai get cut? I know in the book the turtles show up and Karai and the foot clan attack them, they fight them then they bail, leaving the turtles to fight the monster.

No it did not get cut, they don't really fight the foot, there is a small scuffle, more of an introduction/where did you come from type thing.
