With all of my excitement for the new movie, my TMNT fandom has been on overdrive lately (for the world and my friends/family to see)....that said, I wanted to ask my fellow TMNT fans if your friends/family think it's odd that you enjoy them so much (especially as adults).....??
My love of the TMNT began in '87, when the original cartoon aired (I was 8 at the time). I was instantly hooked and have been ever since. In fact, as an adult I became even more aware of the TMNT universe and began collecting the comics.
My love for the turtles is obviously directly attributed to the original 80's cartoon, however, I have been able to appreciate the relationships between all the characters as an adult, and have therefore grown to love them more.
I recently tried to explain to my gf the reasons why I am such a fan, beginning with my childhood devotion to the cartoon, all subsequent video games (especially the first arcade game - BEST EVER!!) all the way down to the dynamic characters. And she "kind of gets it", but mostly just thinks it'e "really cute" that I love things like TMNT.

No, we are not weird. A true fan is someone who manages to show their devotion to someone or something they like even when others do not understand or criticize your feelings. My family too thinks that it is odd and sometimes I feel they are right and I should just give it up. But then I remember tmnt is a part of my life that I enjoy so why should others take away my harmless fun. If you have been a fan for so long this is telling you that tmnt is an important part of your life that you should continue to enjoy despite what close ones say. Remember you are not alone. A major part of this forum is discussing with fellow fans such as your self why you love tmnt.
P.S This should be moved to the general tmnt discussion

What we may think is weird may not be to others. What we think is normal may be weird to others. It is all just a state of mind. Different people have different ideas about what is strange and what is the norm.
So to answer your question, no we are not wierd. We are passionate about our interests and if others think that is weird...well they are weird too. :)

I'm being told I'm weird all the time. Especially because I've been extremely hyper the past month due to the release of the film. But I'd say it's more a dedication to something we love. Don't think too much about it. Some people like rock stars, we like TMNT...

It's more of a hobby for me. One of many, which includes Buffalo Sabres hockey, Cleveland Browns football, and Cleveland Indians baseball. I'm not a one trick pony.

like master splinter said "obession is dedication out of control" and i know im obbessed...its like TMNT is a medication for me...if i dont get a daily dose of TMNT i'll explode...TMNT makes me happy and id rather be happy than angry at everyone..at school when ppl piss me off i sing a tmnt song in my head and i smile..mostly the tour songs...but as i said earlier TMNT is a medication...do something TMNT related daily...at maximium 10 TIMES A DAY...lol thats alot

Are we weird?
Well, all my friends and family seem to think so!
But hey, who wants to be like everyone else anyway? Just cos none of my friends are into comics and collecting toys and whatnot, doesn't mean to say that I can't.

Then doesn't that make them weird to you? :)

I definitely don't worry about what others think, as I have absolutely no shame in being proud of the things I love. When I like something, I don't halfa$$ it. I'm the same way with my sports teams (SF Giants, 49ers, SaberCats, etc) as well as Batman....I think the whole Batman thing may be why I always come back to Raphael as my favorite Turtle...(although I have gone through periods in my life where ALL have been my fav).
I am just curious to see what others out there think....

Hey, just look at the majority whats on saturday mornings and tv these days, I'm happy to say I'm from the era of when tv and pop culture was at its best! I even wore all green today :D

Awesome!! I was thinking of wearing green today too, but alas, I could only find blue. I'll be sporting my new TMNT shirt tonight though, for sure.

My family understands my fandom cuz we're all fans. My mom and step-dad aren't as big as fans as me and my cousins tho.
My mom thought I was a bit off at first for being in love with Raph...but she's since given up on trying to figure THAT out.

Well when I bought my ticket today wearing my Turtles t-shirt the girl who sold it to me seemed less than impressed about my dedication.
I was the oldest person in the theater that didn't have a child with them (but I was happy with the amount of people that were there).
None of my friends were willing to go see it with me and think I'm kind of a nerd because I bought a movie poster and have been talking about the turtles a lot lately.
Screw it though, it's what I like. They can make fun of me and won't change the fact that I could not stop smiling while I was watching this movie because I was just happy to be watching it.
like master splinter said "obession is dedication out of control" and i know im obbessed...
When yer quotin' Splinter, I think that says everything. ;)
(great quote, btw!)
But to answer the question... weird? Who cares? Just about every famous person in the world is "weird," in that they're not ordinary, everyday, Vanilla Boring with Blah sauce.
If you haven't figured this out already, you will evntually: most people who think you're "weird" are so worried about what people think about them that they don't allow themselves to show how happy they are. They don't wanna stand out... because, you know, then something awful might happen!! :o Someone might think they're... unusual! OMGGHAH!!
So, hey... let it shine. :)
Of course we're weird. That's what makes us so cool. :rolling:

my moms always understood it, after all, she is the only one who really saw me as a child and knows how much i did love them
my devotion to the turtles was endless as a child, when i started growing up [around age 12 or so] i began to forget about them though, because the cartoons were dissapearing, the toys at the stores were slowly being depleted into nothing
then, a friend i met in 9th grade reminded me how great they were, we discovered that we both loved them as children, and our art class became nothing but a discussion of how cool they were back in the day between the 2 of us. that led me to more and more, i began searching the internet on it, discovering how the TMNT were created, there story OUTSIDE of the 87 cartoon, and i realized that i love the TMNT more now that i know everything about them :)
ive waited years for another movie to come out, literally been waiting for over 11 months for this one, it feels like just last week iw as yelling to "OMG ONLY 9 MONTHS LEFT"
everyone i know knows i love the TMNT, it comes out every once in a while, so most of the people i know have expected me to explode with enthusiasm today, mos tunderstand it, some think its funny, some think im just goofy, but its fun so :)
in short, i dont think it makes us weird, i think it just lets us and everyone around us have some fun in a way that doesnt come around often once you begin to grow up.

Everyone has something they like that someone else thinks is wierd. TMNT jus happens to be my thing. Better addicted to this than...meth or alcohol or something like that ;) I didn't have a really "functional" family life when I was a kid. I like them because they kinda had the family togetherness that I wanted. I guess it could have easily been one of those other things.
But seriously, yeah, I get lots of "you like the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles? Are you, like, five??" I just smile really big and say "yup, I Like the Turtles." Then look around with pride at the oodles of TMNT stuff on my desk at work.
It's like my little secret that the turtles are more than the 80's toon that most of those people have grown out of :D

Of course I have known this for years. :)

Weird is, I mean, if people talk about the turtles-characters as their boyfriends, or if they were real persons and start insulting arguments with other fans, because of their different opinions.
But liking them, collecting every piece and having them on the walls is NEVER weird. I think without them I would feel very alone...not complete, if you know what I mean?!

My co-worker came over to my house one night and caught me in my TMNT pajama pants curled up on the couch watching TV with my big stuffed Mikey. She took a pic a pic on her phone and shows people ...
Now anyone who has known me since the age of three would say that's just her, she's always been like that but new people alway ask why and I get the same comments over and over how silly I am. Seriously it just kinda makes me smile because I wouldn't have it any other way.
I have done this for the past 20 years and I look forward to getting strange looks for many more...lol

Eh, people pretty much know me as being a TMNT fan. And I guess some think I'm kinda weird, but not enough that they shun me or anything. Which I appreciate. :D
Mostly, I think the Turtles are fun to draw and personality analyze the heck out of. Which is why I appreciate character based TMNT stories. And believe me, the Turtles have been all over the margins of my class notes for the past couple months and will likely stay there for a while. Hah.
But that's the good thing about being an animation major... my classmate buddies are all geeks too, just in different ways. They are perfectly fine with my Turtles geekdom, and I'm sure they find it amusing.
My mom kinda rolls her eyes sometimes, but she handles it well. This morning she called to ask if I'd finished the shirts I was painting for my friends and I to wear to the theater. And then proceeeded to inform me that my younger siblings were going to the movie this afternoon. Good for them.

Hell No! Non-turtle Fans Are Weird!
i agree with you there....
I'm weird because I think details are important. :D Not just any details. All details. I'm weird because I don't act like a typical person. I'm weird because I like it that way. I'm not weird because I love animation, superheros or TMNT. Actually, that's now becoming a popular trend among adults even. Why would I want to be normal when I'd never be good at it? FORGET THAT! Being me is too much fun in comparison.

We are not wierd, we are the true fans, unlike many ppl who are getting hyped up for the film. We ar the ones who will wear out our copies of the soon coming DVDs watching it and the shows, while they only submit to the hype.
Stand tall, TMNT fans.

very nice statement.. we are the true fans, we are the ones who go on the site every time on the internet, we are the one who devote most of their spare money to TMNT, we are the ones who get excitied for a new episode on television, who are the ones who spend more on TMNT than our love lives (lol JK) but i do anyway (wonder why i have love issues)
WE ARE THE TRUE TMNT FANS!!!
and for that we are not weird

TerranigmaFreak:BTW, I went around today on other forums flamming people who complain about the lack of Krang, Bebop and Rocksteady in the new movie.
Speaking of Rocksteady and Bebop, a couple of students walking beside me after coming out of TMNT last night said " maybe Rocksteady and Bebop will be in the sequel, athough they're not cool" I thought that was funny.
As for TMNT fans being weird, well I'm sure some of us are lol, but being a fan of Turtles ain't the slightest bit weird.
Ignorant people view them as a kiddie craze, so the older you are, the more weird that this type of person will think you are, but sod their opinion, if someone can't accept my TMNT fandom, well that's their problem.
The Turtles have been apart of my life for so long now that their almost like a long time friend, and a really great one at that.
Question: Are we weird?
Answer: Yes. Yes we are.
Well, not WEIRD weird, but that really nice weird. We are true fans, and our exploits in life are fun to look at. Nearly every turtle fan I have met has been nice, took things with good humor, excepting to the abnormal, and just generally good people, if not, kind of childish. Then again, to a "normal" person who is caught up in one of our Ninja Turtle rants, we are as weird as the come :embarass:

When I've been telling some people I'm going to see the tmnt movie, they give me the weirdest look and say.."but..it's a cartoon! for kids!" It's funny and seems as if they put it on the same level as if I were going to see a new Sesame Street or Barney movie.
Also, one of the buddies I went with's coworkers gave him flak for going to see a "kids" movie.
I admit I'm a little weird, but only in the sense that I'm different than most other people...I feel out of place in a sports bar but comfortable at a comic book convention....

I respect the TMNT as being interesting characters and the TMNT universe in general is worthy of fandom, but I mainly adore them because every day that I'm not in the early 90's a growing darkness takes more and more of my soul away, and bathing in thoughts of the Turtles helps to remind me of better days and keeps me from giving into that final solution. I cant be alone on this!

Everybody's weird.
We're just weird together. And (for the most part) we're a NICE weird, so I'm proud to call myself a weirdo!! Who better to be weird about than an honor-bound, loving family?
(This, of course, is completely different than being a PSYCHO-WEIRD. We don't need that.)

Everybody's weird.
Yup.
"Weird" just means your interests and priorities fall outside those of, say, 60% of the general population. Many of the things I spend my time doing --- TMNT, D&D, martial arts, read philosophy, study psychology, listen to alt-rock, etc --- would also be classified as "weird". I'm fine with that. I never pretended to be "normal".
By the way, the polite term is "eccentric". ;)
Everyone IS weird. I wear my TMNT t-shirt once in a while, and most people think it's cute, even at work (I wear it under a dressy blazer). But then when I wear it to the TMNT movie, a 30-something guy, who's the one who organized the group going to the movie (all his idea), sees my shirt and suddenly decides, "oh, that's way too geeky." Rather rude, now that I think about it. Not to mention hypocritical. I can tell he really likes TMNT and probably would have liked to talk about the movie, which he liked, but apparently he had to save face. Can't have too much fun, see, makes you weird. ;) He did invite me to a game of pool after, but nah... too late, dude.

Nothing wrong with being weird, as long at it:
A) Makes you happy :)
B) It isn't hurting anybody
