I think it's safe to say at this point that most of us think this new movie pretty much rocks! The animation! The voice acting! All top notch! And I can't help but feel lucky and greatful that it turned out as well as it did. From the beginning Kevin has shown a dedication and true understanding of what makes the TMNT "work." And the result has been nothing short of a deserving shout of "cowabunga!"
I think this movie is a very important accomplishment not just for TMNT but in the bigger sense as well in a decade full of comic book movies and 80s nostalgia. TMNT will be considered up there with the X-Men and Spider-Man movies rather than the bottom with Hulk or Elecktra. As a fan of anything, you want to see it come out right on the big screen. But when it's a favorite, you worry that much more. I am scared to death to see what Transformers is going to be like on the big screen this summer (being the one franchise I have loved longer and more than TMNT.) But everything that Transformers seems to be doing wrong this year, I see TMNT doing right, movie wise anyway. (Though Transformers will have Peter Cullen which at least gurantees me seeing the film.)
I guess what I am trying to say is, in a year that has more movies that have me excited to see them more than any other year I can remember, I think I just saw the best movie of the year already on March 23rd, and it was TMNT. It's one thing to see a awesome movie from a franchise you like (Pirates, Spidey, Fantastic Four, Harry Potter), it's another to see a awesome movie from a franchise you LOVE like TMNT!

Man, even though Kevin was bound by Warner Bros. stipulations, he did his damnest to make sure the Turtles got their due. And Imagi didn't slack, either. Here's hoping they both get more great projects in the future! ::raises glass::

The animation (Well the art design, the animation-the way it all flowed was fine) was awful and cartoony but the voice actors, save for Buffy as April was all good. The story wasn't that bad either and it drew me in. And yeah, it's weird there are so many movies to go to this year. I've seen like 6 in the past 2 months when last year I only saw like 3. I even liked 300 which was written by frank miller and i HATED sin city.

Well, I'd say so. Think of it this way, blueoakleyz-- instead of the franchise fading away into oblivion, we have another chance for the Turtles to be shown again in theaters. Even if you don't agree with the art style, aren't you at least happy that you have an art style to criticize? C'mon dude-- The Turtles Are Back!!! Be thankful! Geez!

As for the topic at hand, yes, we are very lucky. Take a look at how most of these revival things have gone. Just take one look at the Transformers movie. We were lucky enough to get people involved in this project who cared, who knew what they were doing, and who wanted to, above all, please the fans.

Though I would agree with you a little on the human characters... can't work out why but they were a tad too catoony for me. I think it must be the acting quality in the animation... Pixar can pull off those kind of designs because the visual acting is very realistic. But in TMNT it was often as cartoony as the designs, with exceptions here and there.
I still adore the turtles' designs, though. Some of their wide grins reminded me a lot of early Mirage, and I love their builds... since they're short characters, they can be lean with some funky proportions and still look tough... as well as looking capable of sweet acrobatics.

I may not be blue but for me it was the large eyes I didn't understand that one I think that was the thing making them look like bratz dolls but mostly april.
I was fine with how max looked but I think that mostly had to do with the fact that he was a new character we had never seen before.

Like most things in life, it's complex and isn't a simple "either have it this or way or don't". To make it simple though I would have preferred a live action movie that involved Krang.
The human characters were just non proportional and looked really bad. Perhaps it was for the best that they said "Screw it lets just make them cartoony so people will know that's what they were going for" because if they had gone for realistic, even if something slight was off/inaccurate, humans are adept at noticing even if they don't know exactly WHAT it is they're noticing. Ever see something and say "That doesn't look quite right... I can't put my finger on why though"? So maybe that's what they thought.. I'd still prefer realistic humans.

We get it. Please go away. Don't you have a thread for people who didn't enjoy the movie? This is a celebration thread, not an analysis thread.
And I agree with Masked One on the humans. Actually, I think the human acting for April was fairly good in the campfire scene. I really liked that part.
But yeah. For the most part, I think the turtles got all the serious animation attention when it came to acting.
Nothing groundbreaking, but certainly nothing to complain about. Oops. Celebration thread, not analytical thread. :D
I'm still really excited about the movie. I'm planning to see again some time next week. I laugh at the notion that I enjoyed this crazy film so much. The parts that were weak didn't bother me, because I cared most about the family and how'd they'd come back together. Like some reviewer said (non-professional), the plot is nothing more than a MacGuffin.
Anyways, wow. I feel like this was only the tip of the iceberg in terms of what can be explored, story and characterwise. The friends I was with (not fans of TMNT except for when they were little) agreed that the movie was awesome, but that they felt like it should have been longer, like there was a lot of stuff we didn't see...
And I got this excitement, that, man these are the badass Turtles I always dreamed of -- but this is only the beginning! Imagine what stories can be told in the next movie. I can't get over how real and believable the movie felt at times -- as characters, the turtles were more expressive and, in my personal opinion, more believable. I could reach out and touch them. The movie was animated, but it felt like live action.
You know, there's this term in art called "sfumato." It's a term used to describe what made Leonardo da Vinci's artwork so lifelike. Basically, you only define the essential elements of the picture -- for example, a woman's face -- but then deliberately choose to leave some parts vague. Da Vinci chose the corners of the eyes, because the eyes are so crucial in making us believe in the portrait we see.
In some ways, I feel like animation does this in its own way. It can get more believable than a live-action film. So, anyways, thank you so much Kevin! I haven't been this proud of the turtles in years.

The problem with doing "realistic" CGI is that it always will look fake. Humans know from years of experience what other "real" humans look like. Even the slightest flaw is blown up. Watch Spider-man (love the film don't get me wrong). You can tell when it's really Toby or a stunt actor and when it's CG. The reason the humans in TMNT look cartoony is because they were supposed to. It takes you out of the real world and into the world as it relates to the characters. if the human characters had been photo realistic, I'm not sure how I'd like TMNT. Maybe a good mix of CG and live action, but even then, it's probably look fake.

But of course looking at it now the suites has its flaws. Dont get me wrong I LOVE the first movie to death, I'm sure we all do. But c'mon a suite that weighs 80 plus pounds has its limits. The actors in the suites couldnt jump high enough to give a jumping kick when they did it. Not to mention the emotion to capture for the turtles aren't that great.
But at the time the suites were great and worked and the work done was at the time revolutionary in the movie biz from what I understand.

I think the filmakers knew going in that some people would dislike the cgi and some would love it. The sad part of it is that some "fans" dismiss the entire movie simply based on their opinion that live-action is superior to cgi. IMO, there is no wrong way, but personally I liked the cgi angle. Shake it up for the new generation of fans. They have already established us (everyone on this forum) as fans. Live action has already been done, it was great, but so was CGI.

Yeah, either way is right. I'm am curious though to see what a 2007 live action version would look like. If they made a good movie in 90, just imagine what we could have got.

Yeah I know what you mean, I think we all do. I'm sure it would look good and ten times better then the animatronics from the 90s.

Yeah, either way is right. I'm am curious though to see what a 2007 live action version would look like. If they made a good movie in 90, just imagine what we could have got.
BTW I'm not disrespecting the movie. Personally I loved the cgi. I'm only saying, I wonder what they could have done.
If the CG franchise is popular enough, then who knows? Some talented group of creative geniuses might get together to make a great live-action TMNT film that uses motion capture for its actors -- this way, you greatly reduce the cumbersomeness of rubber suits, AND you can make the characters EXPRESSIVE.:D
But for now, I am very, very happy with CG -- frankly, I almost prefer it to real life. I like how it feels both real and like a comic book. :)

Even luckier are the young fans now who are being introduced to these things we have loved all along..the kids you saw in the theater watching TMNT this weekend..the ones who are experiencing all this for the first time. They will always remember seeing this movie.

I certainly feel lucky!
Speaking as someone who used to go to movies multiple times, it's been a LONG time since a movie has made me want to go more than twice!
But the biggest luck was rediscovering the Turtles through the 4Kids toon, then finding online communities and actually making real life friends with some of the people I've met everywhere.
And CGI Turtles kick serious ass!

Yeah I said the same thing in another thread about flaws in human CGI. Bottom line, I hate CGI all together. Any time they use it it feels like what they used it on doesn't count because they just pressed that magic mouse button and there it was.
Really!? That's such an easy job. Maybe I can work at Imagi too! I mean, I can even do extra work and be their janitor as well. I'm sure they'll love to hire someone who can clean and randomly band his testicles on the keyboard to magically make a new movie!
You want realistic? Then go watch Final Fantasy

I think it's safe to say at this point that most of us think this new movie pretty much rocks!
Sorry, but I'm gonna have to disagree here. In my opinion, this was one of the worst movies I have seen in the last few years.
I saw this movie on opening night at 10:30 PM, about half an hour from getting off work. I cannot emphasize how disappointed I was. The story was hokey and ill-structured, the writing was terribly cliched and clearly designed for children (I was hoping for something like from other animated films like Shrek or Ice Age where it appeals to children but also has something for adults), the humans looked absurd and cartoonish (although Splinter and the TMNT were gorgeous)....
And, worst of all, all the characters except for Leonardo and Raphael were relegated to cheap plot devices. Michelangelo, Donatello, Casey, April, and even Splinter were essentially little more than supporting characters. Michelangelo and Donatello in particular were basically non-character stereotypes (Mike was just there for a handful of slapstick lines and Don was just there to give the 'smart guy' explanation). Mike and Don could have been removed entirely from the film and the overall effect of the movie would have been unchanged.
Don't get me wrong, it was still better than the third TMNT movie and, to the animators' credit, it was visually stunning and impressive (excluding the goofy appearance of all the human characters). But, the unshakable truth of the matter is that I wasn't already a TMNT fan, I wouldn't have enjoyed this movie. At all. It was just a bad film altogether.
I had such high hopes for the fourth TMNT movie, but they were pretty much all destroyed. Sigh.

Holy bitter absurdity, the worst movie in years?
To balance out this insane commentary, I will use your own methods of discourse to debunk your criticisms.
I saw this movie at 1:00 on the opening day; I cannot emphasize how grateful and blown away I felt. The story was fast-paced and character driven, clearly a step in the franchise for a broader appeal more akin to the first film and other comic book-based movies. I am glad it avoided the cheap star and innuendo driven humor of animated movies that are the superficial lining of movies clearly woven for small children.
Best of all, instead of watering down all of the characters in the interest of giving them all equal screen time, they focused on the changes undergone by the characters that were most capable of carrying the plot of the movie on their shoulders, while still keeping the other characters consistent and significant supporting members for the leads. While Leo and Raph took the spotlight, the whole family dynamic hinged upon the scenes with Splinter and each member of the family, and there is no way this movie could have worked without the dialogue interplay between the supporting characters. Leo came back to lead a family, and Mikey and Don played a pivotal role in being that family, which would not have been possible if they had been put on par with leader and the discontent frustrated with his leadership (or lack thereof). If Mikey and Don were removed from this movie, the overall effect of the movie would have been absolutely decimated.
Don't get me wrong, this movie had to make concessions to its sub 90-minute runtime, but the unshakeable truth is that even if I weren't a TMNT fan, I would have enjoyed this movie, like most of the people who I assume aren't TMNT fans that have rated this movie at boxofficemojo.com, Yahoo Movies and IMDB. A lot. It was just a really fun movie altogether.
I had such high hopes for a fourth TMNT movie, and they were pretty much totally exceeded. Awesome.
Aw come on guys, there are plenty of threads asking for your critical opinion of the movie. Do we really need to post that stuff in the "yayayaya movie high 5!" thread? :ohwell:

Have you been banned? Is anyone here calling for your exile? No. But this thread was titled and labeled for a reason, and your unasked for and offtopic harshness was the equivalent of showing up to a baseball game in a soccer uniform. Unless you provided some brilliant reason or everyone to start playing soccer, you were going to get called for being lame, which is what happened.
Your inability to comprehend this basic civility is not trite (do you know what that word means?) but is indeed very immature.
If you are at a convention panel titled "Discussion for fans of the New Robotech Movie", would you expect to be welcomed and patted on the back when you show up and say Robotech sucks, you hoped it would be better but the unshakeable fact is that is was garbage. Sure, no security guard is going to haul you off, but that doesn't mean it is a smart thing to do.

In a way, though, you're spoiling a party. Can't we have a party thread? This shouldn't be a debate/let's pick the film apart thread because we have scores of others doing that exact thing... And they are great reads. But what ticks me off about this is that I think you and a few others are basically posting off topic.
Unless we debate about whether we really are lucky fans...
Screw it. I love these moments on message boards when I realize what I'm arguing about is completely irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. There's no reason to give a title to a thread, because in the end we end up having the same discussions and lose sight of the point of the thread. If we want to talk about plot in one thread, it becomes another comparison of old and new; heaven forbid we stick to subject. But that's message boards. I keep forgetting this fact because I don't frequent them as often as you do.
Speaking of going off-topic...:P Let's try to chill out before the grumpy mods decide to shut this down...

How shall I say this?
I was a fan of TMNT from the 80's. We were poor, and my parents are taking care of 7 kids (four of them in highschool), so I never had the luxury of buying the original comics, and am blissfully unaware of the "dark, mature" storytelling of that medium. Heck, I didn't even bother the Archie version, because I have a thing against Ninjara, a mary sue who nabbed Raph.
Anyways, I digress...
I got a taste of that dark, gritty environment in the live action movie. And even though I followed the 2nd and 3rd movie, I was growing up as well... and began thinking that TMNT are generally... silly (Ninja Rap isn't helping and the third movie was plain awful).
And so they disappeared from my radar when I myself became a highschool student, shrugging off TMNT as a childhood thing that I have to let go of. I never followed the new cartoon. I tried, but I couldn't attach to the series at all.
In fact the reason I've decided to even watch the new movie is because of Mako, who voiced Iroh in Avatar the Last Airbender, a series that I genuinely liked. I wanted to hear his last work.
Imagine my surprise that TMNT is such a great movie, with wonderful interactions of these familiar characters with feeling and seriousness, that I find myself being a fan again.
So the movie may not break CGI boundaries, nor its story Lord of the Rings-esque, but it brought me back home, to a time when as a child, TMNT is the coolest thing ever and not embittered by the franchise's commercialism.
And I'll always be grateful to Kevin Munroe for making this movie.
From a prodigal fan, cheers to you. And yes, the loyal fans are very lucky indeed.

Bingo. Me too.
The plot was bogus in this movie, but I couldn't have cared less. The Turtles were cooler than they've been in years and it just ruled, all the way through. The only way this animalistic beast of a movie could have been better would be if they had given ol' Shred-Head another blast.

I love Karai. Now that she is in charge, the foot can actually fight. The foot was pathetic in movie 1 and 2 as far as fighting and stealth goes.
Avatar Yuffie

Actually I feel the Foot should be tweaked up a bit. The canon fodder of Avatar's Firebenders gave the main characters a bit of trouble because they're outnumbered. It should have been the same in that final showdown.
Although to be fair, the Turtles were making a run for it, instead of taking them all at once in the movie. Plus the Foot did effectively captured most of the monsters.
But yeah, I liked how Karai managed the Clan overall. In fact this version made me a Karai fan (the new cartoon gets a meh from me). Hope she gets a substantial role.

Here's hoping we get a scene in the sequel where a legion of Foot soldiers (headed by Karai or Shredder) uncover the Turtles' lair and blow it to smithereens, like in "Scion of the Shredder." That was one of my favourite episodes of all time.

Is it? I could have sworn that it looks slightly different.
The first thing you see in the Turtles' lair in the new toon is their "ninja training center" with the rest of the rooms spread out. In the movie, it was the living room/TV room, with the rest of the rooms spread out.
I wonder if there's anyone who can make some screenshots of the lair from all incarnations? It'll be fun playing spot the difference. :D

You're right, Neutrino. According to the novelization, they don't train anymore. Don's too busy building/fixing things, Mike's got a job that wears him out (literally), and Raph getting his workout beating the snot out of thugs.
Leo even gets pissed about it in the book, which leads to the whole "ninja tag" sequence that we don't get to see in the film. :ohwell:

yeah, I like Karai too in the movie. At first I don't like her but after viewing several times, her accent and her style is sooo.....sophisticated.Beautiful and elegant. But I doubt her strength though
- When she threaten WInters with her sword, Winters merely push her sword away with no fear at all
- Leonardo dodge her attacks. Really now, for a Foot Clan member like The Shredder, who beat the crap out of Leo and the turtles, Karai is a bit weak.
- April manage to hold Karai's attack and finally giving a kick blow before running away. Oh, come on. She's a tv reporter all her life and just recently get into martial arts:roll: How can she beat up Karai? Or is it because Karai is *weak*?
Avatar Yuffie
04-10-2007, 10:34 PM
I raise my eyebrow at April fighting the many Foot ninjas actually, I think that was a little too... weird. So her fighting Karai and getting away with it doesn't bug me as much as that one.
As for Leo, well, he is teh ninja master. :D I have to admit I was disappointed how short it was, but I guess fighting a ninja turtle isn't one of Karai's objectives.
So it's not about Karai being weak. As said the Foot Clan needs to get some tweaking in the action scenes, as they are...stunted, for lack of a better term (this is why I didn't like the "storming into the building scene" I felt like the Foot are these moving dummies the Turtles have to kick at, which always happens in all their incarnations, with or without the Shredder, which I hope that should change a bit in the movie). They're not even the solid antagonists in this movie, but you can see Munroe is trying to make them at least badass.

Winters is immortal. Why should he fear anyone/anything?

Leo has been training and perfecting his skills. In fact, the boys all look quite capable. Also, the movie is a loose adaptation so refering to previous movies is not a perfect science.

So true, the movie really gave your average Foot Ninja a more threatening and efficient feel. Something about the new design, Karai's limited orders (yet they know immediately what to do; gotta love how they fanned out just before the big skirmish), and probably in how they went up against the monsters too.
As for Leo, well, he is teh ninja master. I have to admit I was disappointed how short it was, but I guess fighting a ninja turtle isn't one of Karai's objectives.

I think this movie is a very important accomplishment not just for TMNT but in the bigger sense as well in a decade full of comic book movies and 80s nostalgia. TMNT will be considered up there with the X-Men and Spider-Man movies rather than the bottom with Hulk or Elecktra. !

Had 2007 done well, perhaps Laird wouldn't have sold, we would've gotten 5 more seasons of 2k3 and the two new female turtles wouldn't be kissing each other right now.
