Hi Everyone,

Just curious if anyone else here got into Martial Arts due to Ninja Turtles.

Almost immediately after seeing the first Turtles movie I signed up for Tae Kwon Do. Have been doing Martial Arts ever since including weaponary. After attaining my 2 Degree Blackbelt I left Tae Kwon Do (For several reasons) and studied Jeet Kune Do, Muay Thai, Savate. For the last few years I have been training mostly at home (if I have the time). But thinking of studying another discipline. Any suggestions.

That's great, my Bf of three years went into Tang Soo Do mostly because of TMNT, which I love!
He is a third degree black belt and I guess it is about 16 years now he has studied it
Me, I'd love to but kickboxing has been more my speed...Sometimes he teaches me things...

Heheh~ That is exactly what I did! TMNT inspired a lot of my early life, like drawing and being creative. :) It was in sixth grade, I started taking Tae Kwon Do...it was pretty cool! Managed to get to a second level brown belt before I stopped. Were you in the ATA system?

I have yet to take any other martial arts but I'm looking into a Shoulin school here in Atlanta and possibly some Tai Chi for relaxation purposes. :)

OH as for other disciplines, I recommend checking for some Bujinkai studios near you (ones associated with Grand Master Hatsumi) or maybe try out some Chinese martial arts. OR you could go really wild and try some Capoera...I hear that takes a lot of athleticism.

It was both the TMNT and Jun Fan Li who piqued my interest.

No my mom was one of those over-protective mothers who wouldn't let me do martial arts or play football.

So I picked up a basketball and ran with it.......and then was called for traveling so I learned how to actually play the game.

As soon as I have a job that can pay for martial arts, I am sooooo signing up. However, I've been saying that for at least three years and I still have no such job. It hasn't done a lot for my self esteem. :ohwell:

How much does it cost roughly? I'm guessing it is not $10 like the Simpson's episode would leave me to believe.

The tmnt got me to be a long time fan of martial arts. I took karate when I was a kid, but eventually quit. About 3 years back though I wanted to find a good martial arts based workout routine so I got alot of instructional material on kickboxing. I'm no expert, I just train myself for fun and it's a great workout. The tmnt though are one of the influences I had for really shaping my body actually. I always wanted to have the good size biceps and such that the tmnt had, so I started some serious weight training about 5 years back.

Depends on if you want an actual martial arts sensei or to go to a McDojo.

I've been practising kung-fu boxing for over a year now. It's really fun to do. Also when I have the time at home, I like to practise with the chucks in the garden (especially now, when the weather is so lovely). My cat likes to watch from a distance. :p

Same here :)
When I was fourteen or something, I found a book on the art of Nunchakus and practised quite a lot with home-made ones...
I remember hitting my fingers a lot...
Now, I have real practising chucks covered with a layer of foam. Less injuries ;)

I also have this training video on Sais. Lately, I've practised more with those then with the chucks. I really like them.
Also, one of my colleagues is a sai guy, so we can exchange our knowledge.
Really cool :)

Finally, my brother taught me how to twirl a wooden stick and do tricks with it in different ways when I was a kid. I've practised that with several broomsticks over the years.
Recently, my girlfriend's dad prepared me an excellent bo to practise with. With purple cloth-tape around the middle and everything ;)

The only Turtle weapon I haven't practiced with is the Katana.
Luckily for me, another one of my colleagues is a martial arts nut and very experienced with Katana blades. Last week, he brough a few of his swords as reference for a project we're working on. One of them (I think he said it was called a Notuchi or somethin') was the longest darn Katana I've ever seen. Even in movies... looked almost like a spear!
Maybe I'll ask him to teach me how to use the sword one of these days :)

My younger brother signed up for Tae Kwon Do when he was kid. He got his first degree black belt and got a bo staff. After a year of getting his black belt, he quit.

I hear ya. There's ONE actual school around here that's not a 'McDojo'... And it's really expensive. Which kinda crushed me. I mean, it's not totally because of the TMNT, but because I've always been facinated with it all... But I really wanna do it.

At those places? Probably. :P

Or actually, right next door. I swear one of them is in the same building as a pizza place, and there's another right across from a McDonalds.

I think when I talked to the sensei there (awesome guy... very serious about his training and all that, too... Though I dunno, it may have been a glorified McDojo. I really don't know around here...) it was about $112 a month or something to that effect.

I wouldn't be too sure...
Chances are I'd hurt myself more than I'd hurt my opponent ;)

Slightly off-topic... I remember practising with a real bullwhip one day (in my 'Indy period'...) ;)
I'd placed a coke can on a wall as a target and whipped the thing as hard as I could. Instead of hittin' the can, I whipped my leg and for several days, it dislayed all the colours of the rainbow.
Great days...

I wish! I always wanted to go off and learn how to be a ninja when I was a kid, but I lived with my grandmother, and she wanted me to be a girl.:ohwell:
That's why I never had any TMNT action figures, but Ninja Barbie didn't take no crap! >.>

My husband tried to get me into classes at the dojo where he was teaching, but by then I already developed arthritis, and I couldn't even stand the right way.

Last year was when I started to wanting to be in martial arts, and then I had never seen the Ninja Turtles show, until this year on www.youtube.com. For over a year now, I've been wanting to enroll in martial arts, become a student and a fighter, and there's a big possibility that I may join after returning from California vacation this summer. But it may be difficuit, because most of the classes where I live, provide the training for younger children, and very rarely they do it for teenagers, but hopefully there's a chance of finding a class to take that provides the training and all for teens. For now, I'm currently reading books that provide what it takes to be a student in training, as well as a fighter, and teach skills of the martial arts and ninjutsu.

I'd love to study martial arts but sadly I need a surgury done to correct a birth defect in my knees before I could even consider it. ~_~
