View Full Version : Did anyone kinda like Mike with his grappling hook in the old toon?

Now don't get me wrong, I would have preffered Michaelangelo to stick with his nunchucks throughout the entire show, but I think the grappling hook worked well with him.

In the same manner that Mikey likes to twirl around his chucks and have a good time with them, he pretty much twirls around his grappling hook the same way.

I also always kinda liked the way he'd use his grappling hook to take out a bad guys gun or to seamlessly grab on to a ledge so he could fly across the room. All the other Turtles seemed to have grappling hooks too that they only used to climb stuff, but Michaelango worked well with his grappling hook.

It makes me think it was the best choice for him as a substitute.

I think a better choice than replacing Mikey's nunchucks with a lame ass grappling hook would have been to invade and liberate all the countries that banned them.

The hook was stupid, for one all the turtles had them. So it basically made him like the turtle with everything but his core weapon.

Since they never fought with their weapons in the old show really anyways it hardly made a difference.

I agree we should anialate any stupid country who has outlawed the nunchaku.

To answer the question though, I cannot see how the grappling hook would benefit mike in close combat. We see him lasso enemies from a ways away. But what would happen if his enemy had a sword and all he has is a hook... dead turtle

Shurikens or Tonfas should have been in line before the grappling hook IMO.

I also think the grappling hook is kind of neat and great for long distance combat and mikey uses it well however it does upset me that he never uses his nunchuks since its his weapon, but other than that I like them. Another thing i liked is how near the end of season 3 they showed mikey using both the nunchuks and grappling hook making the switch "easier" than if they just had stopped using them at all without explanation, at least that is "something".

You need to think in terms of how the original cartoon did fight scenes though.

If Shredder came charging at Mikey with a sword, he'd probably just drop his grappling hook and chuck Shredder over his shoulder or something.

The original cartoon universe could get away with it, but obviously Mikey in the other TMNT universes would be screwed.

I'm watching some of the season 4 episodes and it surprises me how there really are no fight scenes. I can't believe I didn't notice it to this extent before. There was a slight fight scene in the Howie episodes, I think, that was pretty good but otherwise, not a lot. Most of what they did involved manipulating other objects like knocking over a box of lightbulbs so the bad guys would trip up or cutting a net to fall on them and trap them. And I was thinking, wouldn't kids want to try to recreate the easy things in play instead of trying to recreate big fight scenes? Even though I guess the fight scenes would look cooler anyway to try to emulate.

I didnt mind the weapon replacement for Mikey too much. It's not like he could really use the chucks anyways, but overall the nunchucks were better imo, but at least they didnt replace it with something rediculous.

the grappling hook was a ridiculous replacement! And not even a weapon, its a damn hook attached to string. And yes I do belive that the grappling hook cripled Michaelangelo in fight scenes. At least in close quartor physical fighting scenes. Donatello, Raphael, and Leonardo all got to have actual physical fights because of their weapons allowed them to do so. After he got the grappling hook Michaelangelo was reduced to picking off peoples weapons from a distance with no physical fighting

So you are saying you are ok with the hook because they don't really need their weapons anyway? That may be true, but I'm still not ok with it. What if the other three turtles' weapons had been replaced by a lasso? You would be ok with that?

Just because the fighting style doesn't utilize their weapons doesn't mean they don't need them. IMO, all four turtles need their original weapons to make it work for me.

With all due respect, you've obviously never seen a skilled practitioner of the kaginawa. The idea that it cannot be used in "close combat" or is useless against a sword is completely laughable.

Now, of course Mikey never actually used the weapon in any kind of optimal way in the OT. He basically just used it to swing from the ceiling or to tie bad guys up. Tch, lame. The kaginawa is downright deadly when used effectively.

On a side note, two of the Ninja Turtles have used "alternative" weapons in an early issue of the Mirage series. Raphael used two tonfa and Michelangelo used a manriki-gusari.

Yea, that was the flash back issue, 7 or 8 I think. Leo had one sword and Don had a shorter bo.

I don't think I've ever actually seen a skilled practitioner weild any ninja weapon. I just can't imagine how it would be effective from close range.

To give just a brief example...

Uke attacks tori with an overhead swing of his katana. Tori steps to the side, uses the cord of his kaginawa to parry the katana, and then entangles uke's wrists. Tori uses this to do a modified omote gyaku, then finishes uke off with the hook from his kaginawa.

If anything I just said confuses you, then you really have no business in declaring what would or would not "work" in Japanese budo.
