View Full Version : Back And Fourth The Sewers: TMNT Fan Documentary Recruitment

I've conversed with Krang, got the approval, and I'd like this to be stickied as soon as possible
Those following the "Fanatics" thread may have seen a few disparaging comments about it, some were not happy that the fandom had again been portrayed as little more than "people who still live lives despite our obsessions", we've seen this millions of times, it's not offering anything new, and it blinds audiences to the real heart of the franchise's long and succesful history that has spanned years.
This is ending. Starting now. If they won't respect us, we'll do the job for them. We have to make this audience aware of this franchise, so that hopefully higher powers, including the ones we are often in contact with, will see fit to pursue a larger professional project, and they'll know who to recruit when we do so.
This is the beggining, the recruitment of fans who want to be seen as hungy and persistent, and who want the fandom and the franchise given the ultimate sign that people are paying enough attention to learn something about it
This is a documentary, it will be fan produced, it will be non-profitable, it will be edited together and complied for the sole purpose of being traded amongst the fandom and those who are interested
Requirements:
-Submit a video detailing personal recollections and the history of pretty much all of the aspects of TMNT you can remember, these will be split up across the documentary. You can even choose a specific aspect, you don't need to cover all of them.
-TWO people, myself and one other, will be the ones who will receive all of the submissions, and who will make decisions on which videos fit the documentary best, and also which scenes from all of the series represents each of them the best individually.
Just remember, if your submission does'nt make it into the documentary either through time constraints or personal opinion of the editor, you need not worry, several of them will make it into the "deleted scenes" section of the special features, or into the "Toy Vault" feature.

Whilst I respect the notion of trying to work around any problems you may have with contributing to the documentary, I don't want to intrude on anybody's privacy in this matter, and therefore I have to stress you find a means of supplying anything without bringing this into the equation. If, say, you want to create the DVD but don't know how to upload it's contents, I suggest you do look up how to make ISO files. Anyone who knows this will probably be a candiate for the posistion of editor.
3. THE Top Five Episodes of the Original TMNT Series (with audio commentary)
4. THE Top Five Episode of the Modern TMNT series (with audio commentary)
Note: It is STRONGLY SUGGESTED that people who volunteer for this project find time to fulfill their obligations to it. If you are hamperd by diesease, family problems, and school, inform me first through P.M. Also maitain P.M reports on your progress at all convieniant and available times.
Thanks

I do think this is a good idea and I am willing to help/contribute as I can.
I would rethink the structure you have outlined in the chapters, though. Don't let that be set in stone. Actually, I think it'd be best to have anyone interested submit possible outlines/scripts. The people these types of films should be made for (although not solely aimed at) are the people not in the fandom and those people aren't going to care if April's a news reporter or a drawing. Maybe mention the different character evolutions in passing, but don't focus on it, rather fit it in to a larger story.
The history of the TMNT and Mirage Studios is actually quite fascinating and more than deserves to be a book. It might be able to work on film, too, but I fear it might get boring with too many talking heads.
Fan documentaries have been made with differing levels of success over the years. The biggest and most famous one is Trekkies. If you haven't seen this, you should. Although part of the reason for its success is that the people featured are all on different levels of crazy - but at the same time they're not being made fun of by the film makers.
There was a similar project for Lord of the Rings called Ringers and honestly... I thought it was god awful. This one had less focus on individual fans and more focus on the history of the LOTR books... it was boring and full of fake psychedelic hippies.
There have also been several attempts at Star Wars projects, but I honestly haven't seen any of them. If I thought any of them had potential to be good I would have seen them. There's a new one scheduled for next year called Fanboys.
Dang, Z... you're fast. I was gonna talk to you and Jester about this.
I was going to suggest something similar Rose just suggested, which was to let people submit script in addition to video. Not everyone can do video... and really not everyone who can do video can also do scripting. :P Maybe people can team up.
If you're going to have different people doing different sections, you may want to have something that ties them together. Maybe everyone could say something on a common topic, in addition to their specific topic(s). Then your editor will have something to work with.

Hmm, good point actually.
Not all of it will be "talking heads" either, heck we might even had some good montages, like flashes of scenes of the comics, then scenes from all of the series etc

Wow - brilliant, Zarius. I thought it was a great idea when you mentioned it in the other thread and am really glad your initiating it. Too many people complain about stuff but never actually take any action - I'm really impressed. I will certainly make a contribution. Let me know where to submit videos etc and time lines etc. Also, if there is anything I can do from over here (England) I would be glad to.
Really like the chapters you've outlined, and whilst I think Rosie makes a great point, I do like what you've suggested.
If you have any trouble finding an editor, I suggest approaching Raphamel - she edits film beautifully.
Will you be approaching Mirage for permission to use copyrighted images? I would hope that they would support this venture as, like you said, it would demonstrate that TMNT is a much more in depth subject than is generally portrayed.

I'll be e-mailing Dan Berger to let him know ahead of what we're doing, since it's non-profit etc, we might be able to get away with the whole licensing thing.
If not, some handy fan illustrations would work very well.

Slash and I are working on something very similar to this for the Empire, a weekly or so series of webisodes with video snippets from fans. Also reviews of the films, cartoons, things of this nature.
Still brewing over the details.

Zarius, I think I could do an audio file or two for this, but not a video file. But anyway, you can just have pictures going over the screen while the audio happens.
I think it might be difficult to get someone on the Empire State Building or in NYC to do the narration, though.
And I hope this isn't fruitless... I have a feeling that most people who aren't predisposed to being curious aren't going to ever take the TMNT seriously.

Yeah, autographs for some of the montage scenes would fit in with the whole merchandising aspect of the documentary (I really need to add a chapter on the live-stage stuff)

I happen to love editing together clips (its some what of a hobby for me) so if you guys are looking for some one to put the clips together and such I might be able to, but it counts on how much free time I have.
Go to me I guess for that part if your really hurting for some one (which I dont think you should)

The documentary has now made the main site news, thanks to Shredder for putting it up there. I've also put out the details to several other communities, so the list will hopefully expanded even beyond this message board.
It'll probably present a problem inevitably, but that's no worry. I'll probably make this a two volume documentary to fit anything else in if it gets bigger, though the subjects and chapters probably won't change.

I'll gladly contribute with some fan art, if you wanted any of those in the film. I'm aware that I haven't posted that much in the forum, but that can be done - I'm working on putting up some newer drawings on my danish website, which hasn't been updated in eons.
I don't know if you need more people to talk in the documentary. I don't know so much about the comics and some of the older shows, due to the fact that it wasn't treated very nicely over here.

Go with it. It'd probably be dealt with in the segment dealing with merchandising. There's no set time limit for these segments yet, so go nuts with it. Even when I do finally decide how long the chapters have to be, there may be a second disc to cover what did'nt fit into the documentary.

I'm not much of tech gal, but if you need any segways written, or you need any kind of writing, ie. people want to submit essays about what drew them to TMNT in the first place or why they're a fan of the series that can be read over image montages, I wouldn't mind helping in the compilation of them or even combining them into something a little more linear to work with your chapter layout.
Never considered audio-only... I might could do that.

Linking narration is a neccisity, but as for reading out other fan opinions, absolutley not, noone knows who they are and that sort of thing is more appropriate for reading ot the opinions of professional critics. Besides, it's more trusting for the viewer to hear or see fans talk about their own stuff themselves.

Sign me up! I can help by sending in some video of my musings and also of my pretty extensive TMNT collection. I've got some friends who I'm sure would say a word or two (& one of them has some fan art), plus I always love to show off my collection!
This could take awhile, like 2-3 months even because right now I'm actually packing all my stuff up for moving, but since you say you're not worried about a deadline, I'm guessing that's ok?

-->> ..anything from me too ..you want..
.. my only main issue with like the Fanatical stuff of the past several months..
..is they wasted my time.. sent me jumping thru' all these hoops and havin' me run anxiety trips all over the city trying to pull all these strings and favours for this 'ART SHOW' i was supposedly gonna somehow magically pull outta my arse.
.. my adreniline (sp) was pumpin' .. and i was freekin' out.. wasting precious energy and time i needed to work on art projects and and important fineart painting for a local AIDS charity ..one that ultimately was not able to complete in time..cuz i had a deadline for that. That had to be rescheduled and i had to make a recommitment to it.
Al that aside.. it was like they came in getting my hopes up that i was gonna be 'featured' cuz my story with Mirage was so 'personal' ..
then right as i was pulling everything together.. without prior warning WHAT SO EVER ..the people pulled the rug out from under me.. :dead:
..they really helped screw alot of things up.. ((i do have to take some responsiblity for some of this.. but they were so positive and polite in the interviews.. but to the point where it there was no warning of any kind that things may not have gone thru' and the repricusions [sp] in case they did.. o well))..
.. wasn't so mad that i wasn't selected.. i was mostly hurt by how wrapped up in the wild goose chase they got me.
This seems less 'BULL SH8TTY' for lack of'a better way to put it..
.. and i trust you guys.. and T-drome n' you guys are very special to me so.. ya know whatever..
Z, .. i'd climb a mountain for ya so .. even if ya don't want my imput ,artwork ..whatever ..
or nothin' .. know you got my support.. i like your flow of thought here.. !! :D

Next week, I'm thinking we need a few promos put together, small teasers of your video/audio input put to whatever flash animation or artwork you guys are willing to offer. If some of you can make a good fifty-second presentation reel and upload it, we can attact more with a concrete product in development.

Not all of it will be "talking heads" either, heck we might even had some good montages, like flashes of scenes of the comics, then scenes from all of the series etc
I have been searching for some way to show my dedication to the whole tmnt franchise from the comic books to the cartoon, the toys, movies, and everything tmnt including everything tmnt from other countries not released in the U.S... i am a fan of all things tmnt no matter what ..even the new ff tmnt series which most fans dont like....but i like to think of myself as so big of a fan that if there was a tmnt movie or show ect... that everyone else thought sucked.. i would still like it no matter what, just because it's associated with tmnt ...so if theres any way i can participate in the documentary please let me know as i would make it a goal of mine to make sure this documentary is the best EVER! and i'm sure all of us here are all more than willing to support our turtles lol :D ..to make sure

You know, I gotta say, he's got a point.
It might be easier to set up somethign where people have topics to rant/ talk about, and you would then have to edit in the parts of the conversation that are useful, be it in that area, or an unexpected one. I'm not an expert, but even I've done a little sound remixing (though I have no experience linking it with video) Furthermore, you might try getting some less "fan oriented" opinions about specific works, yes, but from people whom are otherwise general turtles fans or experts. I could probably think of a decent amount to say on what went wrong with Next mutation, as I've got a bit of knowledge in the area of marketing and such. Its actually facinating how so many small things did damage there.
Anyway, I'm happy to help out. Just PM Me for what you need help in, I'll see what I can do. IN the meantime, I've got to find my audio recording stuff. I'll try to make something to send you, reguardless.

Uhhhh ok? a documentary without diehard fans? thats gonna work!
Pretty much will. The whole point of this documentary is to AVOID those kind of embarrasing fans who attach themselves too closely to virtually everything, and cant even acknowledge when something is at fault. That isnt being a "diehard", thats just being silly.
If you would actually pay attention to this forum (most of which barring some are the best kind of "diehard"), you'd know few and far between love ALL forms of the TMNT. We're a very flexable fanbase and we're not brainwashed or mesmerised into following everything just because it has TMNT slapped on it.
I could probably think of a decent amount to say on what went wrong with Next mutation, as I've got a bit of knowledge in the area of marketing and such. Its actually facinating how so many small things did damage there.
Exactly. I want rational fans saying rational things about all aspects of the franchise.
It'd be the same with Fast Forward, you can have one side note its positives, others note why other fans didnt like it even if it improved on itself and explain why, from appeal, to format. Every interpretation gets equal footing.
turkishproverb
09-03-2007, 07:54 PM
Actually, IF you just give them a topic to talk about, even just how it affected their lives, and only focus on that, the diehards can be useful. The trick is to choose them carefully, and only use specific clips. It'd probably best to let anyone contribute, and then sift through it.

Clips are what this is about.

Exactly. I want rational fans saying rational things about all aspects of the franchise.
It'd be the same with Fast Forward, you can have one side note its positives, others note why other fans didnt like it even if it improved on itself and explain why, from appeal, to format. Every interpretation gets equal footing.
oh yeah i know exactly what you mean ...i still have room to accept the flaws of alot of stuff that happens with tmnt i just choose to look the other way lol...but no seriously i can talk about the things wrong with tmnt just fine
i guess it really depends on what the subject is or who i am talking to for instance if i was talking to a hardcore fan i would probably try and relate and not say anything bad....but on the other hand if i was talking to someone that was somewhat a fan our conversation would be much different...and i am not one to get mad at someone for trash talking about tmnt ....everyone has there one thing right.....i guess i just didnt get a whole understanding of what you were looking for at first....for the documentary and may of come accross as a little too obsessed...i was just trying to express my interest....but anyways i hope all goes well and i will try and do my part if i can without coming accross too strong...

Judt remember, you are talking to a camera, not a fan, theres noone around to judge you on going too far or too harsh on certain aspects of the franchise. This is all equal ground. You will not be alone

Wow i'm suprised i expected the fans to jump on this opportunity..
i want to send some stuff in but i won't be able to until i move to another apartment where i can display my figs..
my brother is also doing film as his major so he will have access to a camera so hopefully i can hook you up...

So you expect people to just send you stuff without giving anyone any sort of direction? If you were actually being proactive with leading this project, I know you'd be seeing participation.
ZariusTwo

So you expect people to just send you stuff without giving anyone any sort of direction?
What you think is on the first page? A layout. Layout IS direction. Participation is what is lacking, and guess whose fault that is?
I do not want stuff sent to JUST me, but someone I have in charge, he or she will send me clips of the editing so I can have my opinion on what should be cut or added, and I can edit a version myself.
If you were actually being proactive with leading this project, I know you'd be seeing participation.
So I'm suddenly the person who has to reach out to other communities and tell them what we're doing rather than a co-ordinated effort that could be done quicker with the addition of several people?
Whenever a TMNT episode (and most have seen how FF and TLS end already) is absent from the airwaves, this is the time that we should be using to generate additional progress in the community, add a new product to something that will be absent until the revived seventh season. Instead we're posting people's obituaries, talking about old cartoons for the one hundreth time and going around in ludicrous circles about what went right or wrong with FF.
I'm not mad at the volunteers who have legit reasons to have been delayed (like life, school etc), but those that dont? Get on, or get off. There's NO excuse for this.

Ok, there is no chance in hell of this project ever seeing completion if that is seriously your plan.
Projects can be team efforts, but there has to be a leader to direct and motivate people to the common goal. You have to delegate the roles and responsibilities to the people who volunteered based on what skills they offered. You volunteered yourself into the role of leader; if you're not willing to take it up, you need to choose someone to put on those shoes or else nothing will ever happen. Ever.
And placing the blame on everyone else for being lazy is not a good way to motivate people. What have YOU done for this project during this time?

Which I DID. Read the thread Shirley, people have volunteered and I've accepted their offers and posistions, problem is that they volunteer, and then do nothing. No P.Ms to continue the discussion or the project, not even when I P.M them urging a response. They just...vanish.
You volunteered yourself into the role of leader; if you're not willing to take it up, you need to choose someone to put on those shoes or else nothing will ever happen. Ever.
If I wasnt taking this role seriously, I wouldnt be in this thread answering any replies and questions.
And placing the blame on everyone else for being lazy is not a good way to motivate people. What have YOU done for this project during this time?
I advertised it on the two TMNT guides at Tvrage I run extensivly and invited any new people who were interested in joining up for this specific purpose. I'm working on promos for Youtube, but want footage to add to them. So much for you trying to hurtle the boomerang of blame back to me huh?
You can b*tch at me for failings not of my doing all you want, if it means getting motivation from people I know WANT to do this but sometimes dont always show it, that's all I care about

So much for you trying to hurtle the boomerang of blame back to me huh?
I guess. If you consider asking other people to do all the work the extent of the effort you plan to put in.
Look, I'm not trying to be a bitch, I'm just saying that nothing's going to happen if all you do is wait around for people to send you stuff.

I just stated that I had been doing promotional work, that is not an example of me not doing anything.
I've made a few alterations to make it more "appealing", such as a co-editing option, PROMOTIONAL MARKETING options, and a cautionary urge to P.M progress reports and to commit.
The recent audio commentary for the original TMNT movie also gave me an idea of how to "beef up" the DVD extras. The top five episodes of both the original and modern series with an audio commentator posistion.

Zarius, while your intentions are good, your reactions here kind of are not helping make people want to partake in this.
Instead of asking for a whole clip or segment, ask for small projects. Like 3 minute rants on the following subjects.
Week 1, INTRODUCTIONS to the Cast
Week 2, First reaction to TMNT
Week 3, Favorite Mirage TMNT Volume 1 Character
Week 4, The Old Toon (Summary)
Week 5, Favorite Old Toon Character
Week 6, Playmates Toys (Summary)
Week 7, Favorite Archie Comics Character
Week 8, The Next Mutation
Week 9, Mirage Volume 2, Image Volume 3
Week 10, The Hiatus
Week 11, Volume 4
Week 12, 2k3 Toon and Figures
Week 13, Fast Forward and Figures
Week 14, TMNT The Movie
Week 15, The Video Games (Save this towards the end so people can put together clips from the games.)
Week 16, The Collectors
Week 17, The Fandom
With 17 weeks of different assignments, people can pick and do the ones they want. With different people doing the same assignment, you can take clips and splice them together.
Just a thought.

Slash's idea sounds good. Just depends on whether or not you have an editor with that much free time on their hands. I'd like to contribute one of these days despite the finger-pointing, but I have no camera. So, should I send stills of whatever with it so someone can make a montage? And, now that I think of it, I guess I should offer to edit since my schedule is usually clear. I have video editing software, and lots of free time, so...

I really should not have been away for this long.
Will fans who grew up with the Turtles, who are older now, and still follow them, be documentary worthy? I think it's just as important to get across the fact that even though the Turtles (or at least in many people's eyes) were for kids, but the fact that us adult fans, still love and follow them. Also, I don't think many people out there, remember the comics, and how dark and such they were. I think I would like to contribute a video on recollections, especially since I followed the old toon series up until about when the end of it was coming. I'm 22, I still collect toys (wish I had some of my old ones though), I have their movies, I am currently trying to collect the old and new series on DVD.
I'm all in for giving my two cents.

I assume that's just to give outsiders a glimpse of what we fans see in the property.
AquaParade
03-27-2008, 05:16 PM
Ya, I guess that does make sense. I would just assume that it would mainly be about the history of the tmnt, the changes they have gone through in the media, and maybe some kinda interview by Peter Laird or Kevin if possible. I don't know the guys, but I have a sense that Kevin would be a little more willing lol.

Don't ask, not unless you want me to take a six-pack, guzzle it's contents and then let loose what I really think about certain people's efforts in a drunken ramble.
Bottom line? Nobody pretty much gives a s*it and I'm on the cusp of requesting this gets locked.

This is a very good idea. Fans of ghostbusters made a fan doc. Showing there love for it. (I'm also a gb fan) tmnt seems to be lost out there among the other big 80's franchises as of late. A fan doc. Is just what we need to show how many people still love tmnt. One question, in the chapters you listed why is tmnt 2 left out?
