View Full Version : What is your favorite TMNT universe?

Forgive me for posing such a broad, general question (and maybe it's not fair) that I'm sure might have been asked or polled at some point in the Drome's near decade of life, but I'm curious what the mass majority of TMNT fans think in the here and now.

Archie took everything adult about Mirage, and mixed it with everything mutant about the old toon*Yes more mutants can be good!* and made one bad ass comic.

Agreed. Archie all the way.

You'll get no argument from me. Archie found its footing fairly quickly, and as soon as it decided not to be grounded in either the Mirages or the original cartoon (it was originally heralded as just sort of some kind of comic book sidestory to the cartoon) it went on to greatness.

It's very easy to thumb your nose at the Archies as "Oh, that's just the cartoon Turtles and cowabunga and crap," but if you really get into them you see that's absolutely not the case. They deal with very real, very pertinent issues even in today's day and age (ecology, the loss of our rainforests, endangered species), yet don't shy away from some pretty surprisingly gritty material -- who saw the brutal gunning down of the MutAnimals coming?

Forever War should be at least solicited this year, if not published, according to Dan the Man. Might get some closure yet.

While all of that is very true of the Archie series, what gives it mega bonus points for me is that absolutely no part of it sucks and no part of it has ever had to be "erased" from the overall story. This is the definitive TMNT comic book for me - the kind of book that I would like to see on shelves right now.

As much as I love the Mirage books, there really aren't that many that fit into the original tone that was established in the first 11 books. And then there's Volume 4, which I won't even get started on.

I had to vote for the OT universe just because it was my first introduction to the TMNT & for that reason, I will always love it :) Now, if I had been old enough to get into the comics, I probably would have voted for one them. As I get older, I find myself wishing I had read the comics.

Ehhh, the current Tales of the TMNT Vol. 2 notwithstanding, you might avoid the later stuff until, well, later (it gets a little controversial), but the barebones essentials in getting started should be :

TMNT Vol. 1, #1-12, #19-21, #24-26, #48-62.

If you just want the collected books, for starters I'd say :

TMNT Collected Book 1 (that collects 1-11 plus all four Leo, Raph, Mike, Don specials)

TMNT Collected Book 2 (optional, but still good)

TMNT Collected Book 4 (must-have, collects the 3 part "Return to New York" that is TMNT gold)

TMNT Collected Book 6 (optional, but I think you'll like "The River")

Unfortunately, not much else is collected. To collect the also must-have "City at War," at present you have to buckle down and buy the individual #50-62 issues of Vol. 1.

Seeing as I've only read One comic of the archie series, I have no say in that. I've read some mirage stuff and it's good, real good, especially volume one. But I'm gonna go with The new toon, just because it's dark but not too dark and has a good amount of kickass stuories.

The new/current cartoon is still "TMNT Lite" in my book, but I can't praise enough how much they were able to sneakily adapt things into it straight from the comics, even if in altered/filtered form. For a kid's show it's still probably the truest incarnation in the mass-media we've seen yet to the source material.

I haven't voted yet because I don't feel I have enough of a background in anything to have a favorite.

I do like the Mirage comics I've read, but I'm not a big comic book person. I'd much rather get to actually see action. I'm leaning towards 2k3, but, as I said, I don't have enough to form a sound opinion.

Yeah, that's what I meant, although the fact that they don't show blood is kinda weak, even digimon showed blood.

If you got the cash to spring every week on Ebay I see people selling all 62 Volume 1 issues plus tons of bonus ones. Usually around 500 bucks.

If I were you I'd just get as many from phone order Mirage and then get the rest off Ebay.

I recommend the Image ones their awesome.

My favorite has to be a tie between the movies, the orignal Mirage comic, and the 2k3 series (I'm not to sure if I want to include Fast Forward or not, since it just doesn't appeal to me at all). Dark, gritty, taking in the very grim colors of New York city (if not, dulling them down). That's what I love. Then again, the old cartoon had that going for them as well, just not as dramatic. And I can't speak about the Archie comics, since I haven't read them at all, but I love what I have seen of it so far.

So, basically...any universe that is dark and has mutant turtle teens trained in the art of the ninja roaming about in it is good enough for me :D

Holy cow. Every universe has its pros and cons.

I have hybridized them all into my own little universe inside my head. Hardest issue to consolidate would be Splinter's origin story. Everything else is reconciliable.

Reasons I like each one:

- OT was my introduction to TMNT. The character designs are the best. It always gets a gazillion laughs out of me.

- NT is very faithful to the comic. Not to mention there is plot and character development.

- Movies were my second exposure to TMNT. Not to mention that through them I got to know more about the comic and the original background story of Splinter and the Foot.

- Mirage Comics are the original story, although I am glad some changes were made that have remained. Don't care for Image from what I have read.

- Haven't read the actual Archie comics, though I have read all the synopses of all the volumes on Ninjaturtles.com.

- Haven't played the video games (except the first one back in the 7th grade) or watched The Next Mutation (which I pretend simply does not exist).

I probably cannot vote yet. Perhaps once I watch the NT (which I just won on Ebay, hehehe) I may be able to rank things better.

Boy this is tough. I like them all for different reasons. I like the dark feel of the original stuff, movies and 2k3 series. Yet the lightheartedness of Archie (at times), FF, and the original cartoon are also very soothing, if that makes sense. I don't think I could pick just one, kinda like the Pringles lol

The movie universe, the first and fourth movie are my favorites. I'll take 2 & 3 fine as well, but TNM does NOT exist in this continuity for me, sorry.

2k3 is my other favorite, even FF is okay.

So if you force me to take TNM, then I say 2k3 is my fave, if I can leave TNM then I say the movies.

Well, for me, the Mirage comics are my favorite incarnation. I haven't read a lot of them, but what I have read I have liked.

OT - Like most people, this is what got me started.
NT - Very nice, and obviously pretty close to the Mirage comics, so they get brownie points for that.
Movies - Fun all around, even III, though it's definitely the worst of them all.
Archie - The only exposure I've had to these is a single Super Special issue that I got when I was still fairly young. It was sillier than the old cartoon, but in a more obvious way. IIRC, the turtles met with some pirates. One of them (I think it was Leo, but it might have been Mike) gets captured by the pirates who take him to some evil scientist/doctor guy. The thing I remember most about this was that the evil dude wanted to take out Leo's SpLeEn! Yeah, it was silly. Maybe I should give more of them a try, but even if they're not all as silly as that one issue, I think I would be turned off by all the environmentalist innuendo that I've heard about.

So, Mirage is my choice.

We voted for the new toon (even though we've only seen the first two seasons and some FF, which we hate) because it seems to be the perfect hybrid of the old comics and the old toon - serious storylines and humor, not to mention some great animation! Plus its the first incarnation of TMNT that we got to experience together - re-igniting T's fandom and making J a fan for the first time! :) :)

We also really like all the movies, though, including III (but not TNM).

TMNT Adventures was my favorite because a long time ago, i had the comics but i also had a tape cassette that allowed me to read and listen along with the plots. I don't remember who voiced who; all i know is that the tape cassette contained "Turtle Tracks" to "Shreddered and Splintered."

I agree. Even though I haven't seen as many episodes of it as I have seen of 2k3, there is something cool and nostalgic about it(I just love stuff from the 80s anyway, like Back to the Future, TMNT, Ghostbusters, and my all-time favorite horror flick, Fright Night).

There's just something about those movies that edged out the 2k3 toon for me. Dont know if it was the realism of live action puppets or fantastic cgi, or the big screen effect that had more of an impact on my memory, I'm not sure. But I have always loved the movies. I never watched TNM though (not sure why that would be lumped into the movie section, as far as I'm concerned, it had absolutely no continuity to the movie universe, perhaps TNM should have had it's own line.

But then in the forth movie, there is no sign of a female turtle or power rangers, right?

Ok, let me put it this way. TNM might want to think of itself as a continuation of the movies, but the movies sure as hell dont see TNM as part of it's world.

This was a hard one.

I voted for OT because of the fact that, like most here, it was what got me hooked on the Turtles in the first place. But it was close between that and NT, I think I like the tv shows because there is a continual serial between them and the story line is always changing.

I'm still reading the comics, have read the first eleven or so of Vol1 Mirage, and bits and pieces of Vol2 and 4, and all of Vol 3 (I'm one of those who liked the gore I guess) but I haven't gotten into it enough to really be swayed into loving the comics more then the shows.

I'm still waiting to get into the heavier issues of the TMNT Adventure series, I ordered Issue 27 on ebay and have been stalled at 26 waiting for that one to come in so I could continue reading them. I think they're ok so far, but I keep hearing good things about the later issues.

My vote might change when I get my comic collection complete (that's always fun </sarcasm>)

And Splinter's ear is still sheared off in NT:TNM. Only universe this happens is the movie one.

I remember a lot of old interviews and such around the time it came off. Even Eastman himself said they were the same Turtles. Yet he also said in NT:TNM they were "older now, grittier." Kay...

the next mutation was at least an attempt to follow the movies but it got lost in cheapo vision and watered down everything. but as well as it could be said was stated it above NM considers itself part of the movies world but the movie doesnt not think the same:P and the power rangers crossover was painful enough in itself.

I look at it like this as far as the movies go:

There's TMNT 1-3. NT:TNM continues TMNT 1-3. Years later, the new movie also continues TMNT 1-3, but does not continue NT:TNM. So both NT:TNM and the new movie are both alternate continuations of 1-3, but you can't have both in the same continuity simultaneously... it's like a "choose your own sequel" kind of thing.

Though, if in your mind you kind of wedge the new movie between TMNT 3 and NT:TNM, that kinda works.

Choose your own sequel. I like that. Could make for an interesting comic book or regular novel adaptation of the Turtles. Remember in the movie BIG, when Tom Hanks' character was trying to get the idea of an electronic comic book where you could choose your own adventure. That would be so cool.!

I decided on the OT cause like Andrew said, it is the gateway drug for most.

It is, at least for our generation. It certainly was for me. If not for the cartoon, I never would have bothered with the Mirage material, which is almost really a paradox in itself.

If a thing introduces you to a thing you would never otherwise have known about, yet you love the thing you then knew about as a result even better than the introductory thing... how do you gauge the two things fairly in retrospect?

I'd seen almost all of the original cartoon in my childhood. Tons of toys, bedsheets, a backpack... you know, the works. All I know is just a few months back I popped in the new DVDs of the old cartoon and after watching about 6 episodes, once the "Holy ****, this is oldschool cool, man!!! Wow, I'm back!" factor of awe wore off, I really found myself tiring of them quickly and was unable to proceed beyond "Volume 3" of the DVDs of the old toon.

The Mirages, while the art is never really stable or consistent, I can always read those as an adult and be drawn in again.

Kendamu
06-02-2007, 02:52 AM
You're right, Andrew. This question is not fair. Let me see...

OT - The gateway drug. My gateway drug. I recently have gotten a renewed appreciation for it through the DVDs.
NT - I have only seen bits and pieces due to when it was on and me not owning a VCR until Fast Forward started. I have a feeling this will be near the top once more season sets have come out.
Movies - This may be my favorite. I'm not sure. I love 1, 2, and TMNT. I never have the urge to watch 3 and NT:TNM, though. The only thing that makes this better than the new toon right now is that there's so much nolstalgia for TMNT 1 and how TMNT 1 is a really good adaption of the source material.
Archie - I've had so little exposure to this book. I've read a few really great three-part arcs but I was never able to keep up with it.
Mirage - I like Mirage. I like Tales the best. I also like Image but I would've liked it more if it had a definite ending to it.

This is so hard. All of the universes, even the ones that are close to the source material, are still so diverse! I can't just narrow it down to one.

About film three. I read the movie adapted novelization, and thought it was a good story. It's no more farfetched or strange than some of the episodes on 2k3 toon, or some of the storylines in the comics. I just wonder if Jim Henson studios was given the go ahead to provide the costumes for the third movie, the better costumes would have painted a better image of the movie in the fans eyes. I just wonder, because I just thought the story itself was cool. Especially the part where Mikey was fighting the urge of staying in ancient Japan, where he was accepted among the people, or going back with his brother.

I think it's mostly the costumes that people have a problem with. The story itself wasn't bad, and none of the characters acted any sillier than the 2nd movie. The spots and some of the animatronics effects were a little strange, though.

Regarding TNM, well, we just won't go there. That's definitely the worst of all the American incarnations of the turtles (I reserve the worst ever for the Japanese incarnation that involved robot suits; some may disagree, but I just can't help it).

It's kind of nice to see such variety in everyone's favorites.

To do what Googasnatch did:

OT - my gateway drug too, from the very first ep no less, lucky me;)
Archie - came around at the same time as OT, one of my gateway drugs into comic collecting itself
Movies - (1 & 4 especially) 1 cemented my love for the franchise for life probably by squeezing everything I love most about TMNT into an 1 1/2 hours
Mirage - It was great to see the source material for the whole franchise and opened up a whole new level of TMNT for me
2k3 - The road back that revived my dormant TMNT love, basically everything I love most about TMNT I was able to see on a weekly basis

I've always held this belief. That they might run into an oddity here and there is one thing, but on the whole, the weirdest thing in a good Turtles story should more or less be the TMNT themselves.

To ask an audience/readership to swallow four, well... teenaged mutant ninja turtles to begin with is a big leap of faith as it is. Some would say by this point, you might as well just open the floodgates for other mutants, monsters, whatnot, but I prefer to see the line drawn pretty close to home.

I'll have to go with the classic cartoon. :) And regardless of what other people may say it had its emotional and dramatic moments as well, and I rather enjoyed the turtles character portrayals there as well.

Although I am a sucker for indepth character interaction. And I just love the complex relationships the turtles have for with one another in the New Toon. And the sweet "we only have each other" dynamic that strengthens their family bond that is played up in the New toon.

The movies are fun and I've enjoyed what I've seen of the NT. With TMNT having fans from a relatively broad age group, they've done well striking a balance between overly-cartoony and overly dark.

But my first love will always be the Mirage comics. They are the only comics that ever appealed to me and that still stands. I didn't expect to be so sucked into the characters or storylines. They range from dark to flippant to almost poetic. Raph can be philosophical, Leo can be light-hearted, Don can be ferocious and Mikey artistic. Geez, I even loved them when they were in black and white! Mirage has also never seemed too concerned about crafting characters who were clearly "good" or "bad". After all, whether turtle or rat or ninja or mutant, everyone is only human.

I had a friend who collected the Archie series and at the time ('bout 14 years ago) they were a little too "cartoony" for me. One thing I liked about Mirage (and I know it's changed since) was that the turtles really were the only four of their kind. Their earthly interaction with other mutants/aliens was fairly limited. That aspect - even when it wasn't the focal point of a particular story - was always there adding an undercurrent of somberness and yes, poetry to the turtles situation. The barrage of mutants that appeared in Archie went against what I was looking for at the time. I remember thinking, "Raph is dating a fox? How do they kiss? Does he even have lips?"

I'll admit, Archie's series is thought provoking!

I know a lot of people here are big fans of the Archie comics and that's given me new motivation to check them out. Where's the harm in getting to know another TMNT universe a little better?

Meanwhile, I'm left struggling with the mechanics of Mikey dating a dinosaur. The turtles seem to gravitate towards women with prolonged snouts. Hey, there's someone for everyone, right?

I was thinking about which Turtle did each universe focus most on.

Mirage- I think this one leans towards being Donatello centric, if it were to have a Turtle more emphasized. Many of the storylines feature the sci-fi and technology domain that Donnie focuses on. He gets one of the two transformations in the current Mirage volume 4.

OT- Definitely Michelangelo! Pizza, cowabunga, surfer slang, more Mikey-centric episodes than for any other Turtles, and so on. He gets into trouble more than in any other version, and more than any other Turtle. He was the one chosen for the SuperStar special about saying no to drugs. The OT is totally Mikey's world.

Movies- Raphael, for sure. While he is the cynical sardonic Turtle in all universes, the movies do show the most about him. In the first one he goes off on his own and is the one to yell for Splinter and the one who hugs him the longest at the end. In the second one again he goes off on his own and gets captured. On the third one he is the one befriending the little boy. And you can see how much the 4th one dwelves on him.

NT- From what I have seen, it may be that Leonardo got finally to be the focus on the NT. A lot of the Shredder/Foot/Karai episodes have him as the focus. And he is the one who gets shell shock and who goes to meet the Ancient One first. He even is the one who stays listening to the Ancient One's story while his brothers run off to play. And the first episode is narrated from his point of view.

Archie- I have not read any of the Archie comics. However, since Raphael got the girlfriend, do they focus more on him than on any of the other Turtles?

Image- I have not read any of them either.

TNM- we know exactly who it focuses on.

Just to point out: I think he gets in more trouble in the NT than the OT, he's somewhat more serious in the OT; and it focuses quite a bit on Donatello too, considering his gadgets help a lot in saving the day.

The Karai episodes perhaps, but the only three Shredder episodes really giving him majority of focus was SS 1, SSB 1, and RTNY 3, and even then every turtle really participated a hell of a lot, especially in SS, SSB, RTNY, and Exodus. As for the Foot, all turtles got a damn good fair share of those eps. And technically, they all met the Ancient One at the same time years ago, they just don't remember because of what the Tribunal did to them.

I have not watched much of the NT. I am just stating what I have seen in those episodes. They all did meet the Ancient One at the same time- but Leo was the first one to see him again as a teenager. And Mikey's the goofball regardless of the incarnation. Donnie does do a lot of gadgets pretty much everywhere- although I am glad they were highlighted so much in the OT.

Yeah I find that to be the case in the old toon as well. Michaelangelo in the old show seemed to take things a bit more seriously in despret situations than he does in the new toon. I also think to some degree old toon Michaelangelo shows a wider range of emotion than the new one even does on ocsasion :o

it focuses quite a bit on Donatello too, considering his gadgets help a lot in saving the day.

I agree with you. I think Donatello was pretty much top turtle in the old toon and could be argued the unofficial leader. Since more often than not it appeared Donatello was the one giveing orders on how to disarm a dangerous gadget, or Dontello who was responciable for saving the day. Heck they even dedicated a episode to him being a fearsome adversary if he ever got mean in the :Night of the Dark Turtle episode.

My favorite TMNT-Universe? Definetely the old cartoon.

Maybe silly and not "ninja" enough, but it's great comedy. =]

I would really love a sequel with all the old characters (knowing it won't happen) with more mature ninja action AND the comedy involved
(krang or the dimension x alone would make up for a entire series not to mention the countless side characters).

the power rangers crossover was painful enough in itself.

That's what turned me off from the series..... it was pitiful and I was 12 or so

I'm leaning towards saying that Mirage is my favorite universe, even though I am relatively new to it.

However, I like some aspects of the other universeses better- multicolored bandannas, the pizza/surfer/cowabunga humor, and so on.

And I prefer April working as a reporter- which is a job she could take in basically any universe.

Hi guys! It feels so good to make the first post.
New toon all the way! You know, like many others here I get the OT first but when i found abou the new one I had short but strong anger time over the old series when I learned what blasphemy to the source material it was. Anyway the NT is mature, good plots and it probably has the best from Mirage, which I haven´t read much but from what I know, the toon has actually better writing sometimes.
After this i pretty much like archie comics which is probably how 87´s version which should be remembered (too bad that here it was canceled in the moment whenDdon was imprisoned on the floppy disk).

**sigh** I respect that every one is entitled to their own opinion, but seriously why can't fans just respect that the old toon series was just its own interpertation of a dark comic that went it its own direction.

with in the context of its own format it did have some good story lines and characters.

Because at the time, when we were very young (I think I was around 5), we had no idea about the Mirage comics. Mirage was not a common name to us. As we grew up we learned about it, but for many many years, all we knew of the TMNT was the OT. That's why the fans, including myself, initially had a hard time swallowing a new cartoon 4-5 years ago.

the old toon was a cute show for what it was, a kiddie show. It was my first exposure to TMNT and drew me towards being a Raph fan..but the movie did most of that...
There were some good fun stories, one of my favorites was Raph Meets His Match...I thought Mona Lisa was a clute little flirt.

But with all that, I'm not a big fan of the OT. Gimme Mirage, TMNT1&4, gimme 2K3....I will watch OT but cringe at the poor characterization of my hero. He's not always that sarcastic and light hearted. Of course that part of his persona wouldn't fit well in the OT.

When the new show came out in '03...I nearly jumped for joy...okay i did. More accurate representation of all our heros, closest we've seen to the comics. I crave MORE. [fangirl mode]And Raph...

I agree on how the the new toon represents the turtles more true to their potrayals in the Mirage comics. Except for Mikey. Lone my boy Michaelangelo but I seriously hope thats not how he was potrayed in the mirage comics!

yeah I under stand that but fans tend to make it out like the old toon raped the turtles concept and went all kiddified on purpose. When really at the time there was no way I cartoon with the seriousness and dark elements that the new toon has today (or at least had  ) would have flown back then. Do you really think Leoanrdo could have gotten away with cutting off Shreddder;s head in the old toon? No.

I would have to agree. Whether you think the OT was bad for Mirage or not, the turtles would not be what they are today without the OT. And maybe to some people, that would have been a good thing but we may have never had the live action movies had there been no 87 series. Without the movie there would be no NTTNM and perhaps no TMNT or 2k3.
Mirage started it all and the OT grabbed an even larger fan base.

I do agree that the OT propelled the TMNT to fame.

Part of me wonders why oh why did it have to be so unfaithful to the comic. And part of me just LOVES the insane amount of laughter it brings me. Not to mention that some of the innovations it started have been kept in all future versions. And April the reporter ROCKS.

To me, the OT is the animated version of a gag doujinshi. A doujinshi of humorous side stories.

Now that I have watched the entire NT (except for Fast Forward- which I did watch what is considered THE worst episode of it, and it still did NOT manage to turn me off away forever from FF), and also have read a lot of the original Mirage comics, I think I can manage to make a vote.

I have decided to vote for the 2k3 TMNT cartoon.

What made me give the deciding vote to 2k3 and not to Mirage?

2k3 is actually coherent, cohesive, and consistent. They have managed to adapt a lot of good stories from the movies while at the same time getting rid of all the inconsistencies and continuity errors. Everything flows so well- even the filler episodes work well into the main story. Plus they have managed to create some original storylines that work quite well too- such as Ninja Tribunal.

I cannot wait to see more 2k3. While I will still keep getting the Tales Volume 2, and have enjoyed MOST of the Mirage comics I have read, the truth is that some things just don't quite work out. I am glad they polished them for the 2k3 toon.

That, and I like the multi-colored bandannas much better than the all-red ones. More individuality.

I have not read any Archie TMNT comics. I would still like to do so. The OT had its time and place- and it's still great. Movies were awesome. But I will have to pick the 2k3 NT.
