Tales of the TMNT #40

This is one of three issues of Tales that I’m currently juggling (38, 40, 41), my last three of those shipping in 2007.

This one is a collaboration with Diego Jourdan, and features a middle-aged Raphael in Christmas Eve Tokyo. Lately it’s either only the very young (pre-teen) or the very old turtles that interest me in terms of storytelling. Not sure why, maybe because of my accelerating age (Dorian Gray-like, it seems of late), or the fact that I’ve finally had a child in middle-age, or both.

Anyway, this is only my second attempt to tell a comic book story without dialogue, the first being twenty or so years ago in The Puma Blues #5 (c. 1987).

This Raph story’s called (excuse the pun), “Silent Knight.”

Wearing an eyepatch does not automatically mean that he lost an eye. It could be a temporary eye injury. Or for protection after a surgery. Conversely, he could get an artificial eye if he had lost his original eye.

While all of that is true, it's pretty much accepted fact that Raph loses his eye at some point.

I don't believe it was shown in mirage which is odd they really do need to do more future old turtle storys.
And it was shown in the archie future tmnt world.
Raphael is always shown wearing a black eye patch in every future image of him.

As for the bomber jacket, that's actually my jacket (no BS) ! It's COTTON, as the environmentally aware me won't wear leather products.

Archie #42 is one of my all-time favorite TMNT comics, period. And it totally brought me back into the Archie game after straying for about 15 issues. Inspiration taken from those stories is nothing but a good thing!!

Talbot also did a beautiful painting of Future Mirage Raph where, like in the Mike special, he has the eyepatch and lives on the bayou.

Even Peter Laird himself did a sketch. Think it's in his Blast from the Past archive.

This issue should be fascinating. I've always wondered if we might get some breadcrumbs that might hint what leads Raph to this path.

Just something I thought might be worth noting.... In that backup story from the Mike Micro, Raph sees himself in the future if he continued down the path he was going. I think the point of that whole backup story, though, was to help keep Raph from going down that path to begin with. So while this new story leads us to believe that Raph still has his eye damaged or lost, it is not necessary that Raph goes all primitive and lives in the swamp like that backup story showed. I know this is rather off topic, and I don't know if anyone was really even suggesting that he would still live in the swamp someday, but I thought this was worth noting just as FYI.

By no means am I saying it's set in stone... but unless we're willing to say that the whole bit was just in his head, it reasons to say that's how he'd end up if he doesn't set himself to rights.

Well, that's the point. We don't know. I think it's safe to assume that he did because he didn't want to become that once he had seen it. But we don't know how much he changed, if at all. All I'm saying is that since he has seen the future, he may try not to let that aspect of it happen. From the looks of it, the only aspect of that future that seems set in stone is that he loses an eye or has it damaged.

I have it! One of those things that I randomly picked up when it came out, even though I wasn't following Mirage at the time, just the Archie series...I'm glad I did! If I can manage to get access to a scanner at work I'll scan the little extra Raph story...is it allowed to post it here? If not, I guess I could email it to those who want to read it. It's pretty cool, I always liked it.

I really wish they'd use those solid grey tones more often. I prefer those or the crosshatching over the "dot" tones. That's just me, though.

I think this "Silent Knight" will be a two-parter. After all, it's a Christmas Eve issue, Murphy is working on both 40 and 41, and it's set to come out in November.

Rafael Valles, writing for La Tercera: These days, the Ninja Turtles’ adventures are born in Santiago, at the drawing table and computer of Diego Jourdan (29), Uruguayan artist living here [Chile] since 1991, and who today is part of the team of illustrators for the comic books starring the turtles, who this year have gone through a revival of sorts with the release of a CGI film which returned them to the big screen.

Jourdan works from his home for the North American Mirage Studios, owners of the turtle franchise. That is how he draws covers and stories for the Tales of the TMNT comic book, as well as the official film adaptation.

“I try to make them [the turtles, or comic books—the article isn’t clear] more expressive; at the narrative level I like to exaggerate the foreshortening [I’m not sure if that’s the right word—it’s the right translation for the word “escorzo”, but it doesn’t seem to make sense, within the context] and to place them in more dramatic situations,” says the artist, a professional graphic designer who studied digital diagramming in the United States. “Technically, ’m transitioning towards digital drawing, inking, and coloring, although sometimes I still use carbon pencil, for nostalgia if nothing else,” adds the illustrator, whose local works include newspapers and comic books like Sicario [I’m not sure about this one—it could be Scario].

But his days are not limited to drawing Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello and Raphael, the reptiles-turned-urban heroes and martial arts experts due to radioactive mutation. “Occasionally, Mirage allows my to plot the stories. But... it's very much in character for Raphael to tell such treatments to go F themselves, and slap an eyepatch on and keep it groovin'.

Lesse Raphael looses an eye in the following things:

1: Mirage's Michelangelo Christmas Special had a secondary story in which Raphael is visited Scrooge style by the ghosts of christmas past, present, and future....the ghost of Christmas future showed him a future in which he's in a swamp with just 1 eye (in the Archie series he has a nightmare about said swamp....)

2: The Image series - Raphael looses half his face in an explosion and he becomes the new Shredder. So a whole series with Raph and a missing eye

3: The Archie series...again an explosion is the culprit (and Armaggen the eeeevil mutant shark) for Raph's missing eye

4: Same As It Never Was - Raph's missing an eye!

And it's always his left eye too.

Good question. Looks like Road Hogs came out in 1986 (which had the short I think you're referring to)... though he seemed to have both eyes intact in that future (though one could have been a blind eye, for all we know).

They're aliens who crash landed on earth, before taking up disguises as humans and starting TCRI, which is where the cannister of ooze came from that mutated Splinter and the turtles. (and Leatherhead!) They came back to earth in vol 4, and basically opened it to all sorts of aliens and what not, thus making the turtles public! They look a bit like basketball sized brains with tentacles and are what Krang in the old toon is loosely based on!

That's what I thought to begin with, but I couldn't and still can't see the word 'Utrom' spelled incorrectly in both Andrew NDB's post and Diego's quote of his, nor an indication that it had been edited, so I thought it was just an honest question!

Basically i'm a cartoonist/illustrator, and my job is to draw the turtles the best way i'm capable of. Tho i enjoy reading comics from time to time, i have never been able to collect nor follow a single title in my whole life! :lol:

You have to blame Dan Berger for introducing me to Steve Murphy, and myself for pestering Steve beyond the initial letterhead illos and human tolerance! :D

That's what I thought to begin with, but I couldn't and still can't see the word 'Utrom' spelled incorrectly in both Andrew NDB's post and Diego's quote of his, nor an indication that it had been edited, so I thought it was just an honest question!
It is spelled Utrom U.T.R.O.M. quite a few people miss-spell it U.L.T.H.R.O.M.
Just as tuns of people spell RAPHAEL, SHOATE, ARMAGGON, & many other characters names wrong.
It's just really something that annoys me.

Man, that sucks. I know what it's like to be freelance so you have my utmost empathy. However, who knows what 2009 will bring?? TMNT work galore? You never know. And if comments on this forum are anything to go by, there is a lot of interest in your style of work amongst the fans. Ought to work for DC or such. Look at the rubbish they have in Countdown, or had over in Ion -- do up a big portfolio and send it over to them.

Isn't hard to do considering most comic shops consider TMNT to be a joke and hardly order any issues and the ones that do can't get more issues from Mirage because of low demand or something to that nature.*shruggs*
But yeah I have a subscription at a locol shop i found so I finally don't have to worry about finding anything anymore.:D

Yeah, it's pretty true. As you know, Vol. 4 sold miserably and lost money (not surprising, as it is rather unattractive and as it is most hardcore fans don't like the story if they can manage to ignore the art, I can't imagine a casual fan would find any interest in it at all).

Tales has only started doing relatively well in the wake of the new movie, I believe. But it's hard to get shops to commit to a title that changes with each issue.

I don't doubt that #40 will be fantastic and my subscription with the local comic shop guarantees that I'll be getting one. But my comic book guy would never ever order more copies of the book than what he's got orders for. I honestly don't blame him because while some issues would easily sell off-the-shelf, the title isn't consistent enough for him to be guaranteed that every issue will sell off-the-shelf and his shop isn't large enough for him to be able to afford sitting inventory.

I took it not as the truce being called off, but just Karai wanting to play one last hand with the Turtles, for whatever reason.

I liked the issue, loved the art, loved Raph actually being allowed to go balls-out for an issue (something I would hope we'd see in the Raphael mini-series).

The ending, though, yeah... I can swallow that a 90 year old Karai, in the mire of her old age, might want to relive the old days of fighting against the TMNT just for the -- wait, what? Under Karai, the Foot (either NY branch or otherwise) never screwed with the TMNT. If anything, Karai's "those good old days" would be her fighting with the TMNT against a different enemy.

Digressing, and maybe I'm picking at nits, but the ending kind of left me with the same kind of taste in my mouth as the recent Casey issue... sort of a, "Hm, that was entertaining, but what was the point?"

But in the end, we get nice art, a grizzled Future Raph, lots of grit, actual ninja fighting paneled/choreographed in proper "Return to NY" style, even some tones (even if they're the barely-there/quickie Photoshoppy ones)... so I can't knock it too much.

Well, we know Karai was old enough to have a daughter who was upwards of 16 years old, and this was in the 1980s in the continuity. So yeah... she'd be real old in 2060.

I think Diego's art has made great strides even since Tales #37. The ink and toning job on this comic is well done, and provides a good sense of depth to the panels. The snow effect works very well, like the Michelangelo Christmas special from way back.

Wait, those were robots? Did I not properly read the issue? I guess that makes sense, since Karai sending flesh and blood Foot against Raphael to be killed would seem a little bloodthirsty just for bloodthirsty's sake.

Scratch a few points off the grittiness scale for me on #40, then, but still a solid issue.

Did ya'll get the idea for the name Motoko from anime?? There's several Anime that have a character named Motoko. Like Love Hina and Ghost In the Shell.

I have a couple questions tho. Why was Motoko in the sewer anyways?? Did Karai know Raph was in Tokyo?

Happy Thanksgiving! Ye gods how the time flies by when you're trying to put out a monthly book (which we sometimes manage to do on schedule-insert your own "Mirage is late" joke here). I'd love to go cold turkey on missing deadlines, but unfortunately it's just something that happens with a staff as wee as ours is (insert your own wee staff joke here-or better yet don't). Hopefully things will improve next year(It's out New Year's Resolution-that and eating more green vegetables), which isn't too far away now! Did I mention that time flies?

I basically agree with all the hype and complete awesomeness of the issue. I lost some faith with Tales on and off again, but this issue and 37 revived it. The action was so fluid that I could imagine what happened between the frames, and the angles from a filmmaking standpoint were really great.

The cover of this issue was the best thing {even if the dpi on it was wrong and it came out pixelated, the art inside is pretty nice but it could have used the nice colors the cover had.
The story was cute but there's not to much to it just like the casey jones story.
It was decent and was nice to see Raphael in the future and not living in a swamp but there wasn't just much to this.

I liked the issue, the artwork was a wonder to behold after reading Bad Moon #4. I actually enjoyed an issue that didn't rely on tons of heavy reading for once. The artwork was allowed to shine through. We don't need these all the time but I did like it alot.

Today I went to a comic shop that wasn't my usual one and I made my first purchase of current TMNT issues: I got this one, and then in the back issue bin they had a few others and got Tales #10 and Vol. 4 #2.

I guess this one was pretty good. I like the art, but I guess I prefer something a little more dialogue heavy. Maybe it's because the only other Mirage I've read is the beginning of Volume 1 (up to Return to NY), but what's with the future Raphael? Have they told future stories like that before?

Haven't read the other two issues I got yet. Looking forward to those. Glad I was on the lookout for Turtles comics, they are a nice break from my usual Marvel and DC purchases. :)
