I just bought the issue today, and while I have a few things (and spoilers) to discuss, I really want to know:
What movie are Shadow and Raph watching together?
Also, where does this fall into continuity? In between Tales #7 and Volume 4?
Lulu was an awesome character, much to my surprise: on the cover for #2, I thought she looked like a moron. I wasn't too surprised who her momma was, though.
I also loved the fact that Raph got geared up. He had a whole shell-load of weapons, including a few baseball bats and a hockey stick!
Finally, since when does Shadow carry around a katana?
Whoops, forgot one more thing.
Why does Raph go answer the door? Now, if this is during or after Volume 4, aliens and mutants are accepted.
But I think it's before Volume 4, so why the heck is a mutant turtle answering the door? Shouldn't Shadow get the door? If if had been anybody but Lulu, they would've freaked.
Oh, okay, one final thing: I loved the scenes with Raph interacting with the women. Especially Lulu. That kid is great!

The Exorcist, a horror classic.

You know, I was really looking forward to this issue, but it really didn't end up doing anything for me. I dunno, it just feels like not a lot happened and what did wasn't very interesting.
And I also didn't get why Raph went and answered the door like that.
Ross Campbell needs to draw some interiors.

That's the most dissapointing thing about this series to me.
Not to rag on Lawson because the guy gets it enough but to see the cover and then over the comic I'd of thought I just picked up a Marvel comic or something.:ohwell:

I want the cover as a poster.
And then I want matching Mike/Leo/Don posters. :D

Hm, pretty much my thoughts. And it kind of leads us into what seems like a wackier continuation to come... but I'm down for the ride.
What do you folks think, maybe Michelangelo would have been better suited for this mini?

I'm not a fan of werewolves or weird eyeball bats either, but Raph and Shadow together make an awesome team.
And like I said, I love Lulu. She is hilarious.

I enjoyed it, 'twas quite good. Dug Raph's interaction with all them girls, especially when they were all on the couch. And I see him getting all that gear on as kind of him 'manning up' a bit. And Raph 'ralphing' was pretty funny too...

Does anyone else think Sloane was a bit too quick to forgive Shadow? Like she's planning something?
In the previews on the official website, it's mentioned that someone was pulling the strings of Raph, Shadow, and Lilith. Sloane is conspiciously absent in mention.

Read it today. Pretty decent. Needs a conclusion, though.
How old is Shadow in this Tale?
It said something about Donnie and Leo not being right there- which is in a Tale not yet written. Could it be a simple explanation where they just stayed behind while Raph took a trip with Shadow? Or will there be something else that needs Leo and Donnie specifically?

there are 3 other issues to this story
issue # 2 - Raphael, Shadow, Lulu and the resurrected Sloane, hit the supernatural streets of Nocturna City to revisit the scene of Lilith’s abduction… but what’s with all the blood?
issue #3 - Raphael, Shadow, Lulu and the resurrected Sloane find themselves at the mercy of strange undersea beings and beautiful vampire girls!
issue #4 - The conclusion, as Raphael, Shadow, Lulu and Lilith find out exactly who’s been pulling their strings, and why!

so what exactly happened in these bits between Raph and the girls? How did tough mean ol' Raph handle all these teenage girls?

Seems more plot-driven than character-driven at a glance, but sounds like good fun.
I hope before it's over we at least get a bit into Raphael's head, and he has his own personal "Arc" throughout it all.

This Tale does take place after the Utrom's landing on Earth, so it's not so far-fetched for Raph to answer the door; Shadow is apparently around 15 or so if I remember right.

I hate to play the role of the continuity critic, but the epilogue of Tales #7 states that 5 years passed since Shadow began living in the farmhouse with Splinter (and the Turtles):
"That was barely five years ago. . . . I spend the first year hating it all . . . By the second year I started to loosen up, appreciate my weird mutant family . . . Sloane would freak if she could see me now. . . What about the revenge Lilith threatened... What about the future she promised?"
But in Bad Moon #1, Lulu says:
"I like Shadow. . . . I bet she and Sloane have a lot to talk about. They haven't seen each other in almost a year."
An oversight or am I just missing something here? At the end of the day, comic book continuity is overrated anyway.

No, you're right.
I think it takes place just before Vol. 4 starts, not after the Utroms arrive.
Why Raph decided to answer the door himself, I haven't got a clue. Maybe he figured he'd scare away whoever it was. Or, considering he just guzzled two beers and probably had more before that point, he might've just been really drunk.

Was Shadow aged quickly like they do with some kids in some sitcoms? Did she just have a very early puberty?
Because I am estimating that Shadow was born during the time of City at War, which would be around 1992 or 1993.
She would be 15 NOW if that is the case. BUT "Bad Moon Rising" takes place before Volume 4, which was written starting in late 2001 and September 11 had already taken place.
Or is this just another one of Mirage's many inconsistencies and timeline errors?

I don't know about Shadow's age, but I don't think we can specify a year of birth. As I have said countless times when people ask why the new film wasn't set in the early 90s, or when someone asked Tristan why there was 21st century technology in tales 36 when it was supposed to be in the late 80s a la City at War, restricting the era restricts the narrative. The turtles should be timeless. I don't want to be reading ninja turtles comics when I'm 70 and for them to be Pensioner Ninja Turtles (depsite the fact that turtles live so long). I will always expect them to be young. That way the audience is not alienated. Whilst there is nothing wrong with checking continuity and timelines, I think it can be dangerous to be too technical about these things.

While I agree that there's no need to be sooo strict as to ban 21st Century tech from stories that actually took place 10+ years ago, Shadow's age can be a little more concrete.
Because I am estimating that Shadow was born during the time of City at War, which would be around 1992 or 1993.
There's no need to speculate that she was born during City at War, because she was. It's part of the story. I think the important thing would be to consider her age with the age of the Turtles and keep the difference consistent. I think the guys were 18-ish by the end of CAW, so there's what you can keep in mind.
However, with that said, I do think there are inconsistencies with Shadow's story age in Bad Moon Rising and the previous related Tales. And as mentioned, Raph answering the door is really weird. But this is what's going to happen when you have different creative teams working on books that are supposed to link together.

I know you haven't read the Archie series, but the future Turtles in those books are 100+ years old and not only do they still kick ass, but they're among the best TMNT stories ever. So I wouldn't rule out enjoying aged TMNT stories, although I do understand your point. :)
Andrew NDB

Yes, the thing with the TMNT, is that they have the distinction -- unlike someone like Batman or the Punisher or the like -- that they really can get significantly older and it's OK.
By most reckoning, using Splinter's age at the time of his death in Vol. 4 as a multiplier of how much their mutation extends their lifespans (a normal rat living about a year in reality = a lifespan of about 35 years if mutated by TCRI mutagen; a red-eared slider living about 25 years in reality = a lifespan of... a long time), the TMNT will be around a long, long time to come, so we might as well move them along in somewhat real-time... but also don't be afraid to reference when such-and-such story really did take place.

That is so cool. I knew the turtles live a long time, but didn't know there was a long life side effect of the ooze. I really want to read Archie. It sounds so awesome.
But yeah, my point was that I would hate for the franchise to die because of kids or whoever not being able to relate to the era anymore like limitations of technology or the turtles get old and die (although they obviously outlive us!). That's why I like Tales, because it jumps back and foreward chronilogically. It was one think that annoyed me about some of the bad reviews of the new film - those who said: "they were 15 in 1990, so they should either be 32 in the new film or it should be set in 1998." To me that is putting limits on something that is much bigger than that and capable of much more.

The issue wasn't as bad as I thought. I still dislike Lawson's art. If I'm going to be paying for these books, I might as well enjoy what I'm seeing. The story is pretty wacky, but I imagine when it came to Shadow and Sloane, the werewolves thing was pretty weird in itself.
I have a feeling this will be a good series, though. This issue was just the start to the many crazy things to come. I see a nice plot twist coming in the fourth issue.

I'm gonna have to give this issue a WOW also but it's not a good WOW like I gave Tales #36.
The Covers for this series first of all are beautiful and once you open up the comic the disappointment starts.
I've grown used to Lawsons art simply because we see it so much but I don't have to like it I think this is by far some of his worst work.
I just invasion the poor man chained to a desk and Laird wiping him to do like tuns of art for him. I know a bit creepy but it's the visual in my mind nonetheless.
The story well Geez let me just say one word to describe how I felt about this issue "Cooter."
Take that for what you will yes the Issue is heavily full of 3 cackling females and a giant Turtle.
They should have called this series 3 Ladies & a Little Turtles because that's pretty much what it is.
Shadow, A Moronic Gothic Witch child who has magic powers, and A Werewolf all Team up and bring Raphael along for the ride.
I'll continue along for this silly Charmed and Never-ending Story like story with Raphael tossed in but I'm not expecting much now from the other issues.
Blind Site Was MUCH MUCH MUCH better.
The was just waaay to cheesy for me after reading Tales #36
I'm just shocked seriously wow this was bad I know I'm being a bit silly here with the things I'm saying about it but Lord thats honestly how I felt.
And I've got no issues with women or anything like that but when the Title is called Raphael Bad Moon Rising should the books focal point be a little more Raph.

I wasn't looking forward to this issue or series, I didn't particularly enjoy the Tales issue it's based on, which I suppose explains why.
I would have liked if the story was based more around Raph himself, a story that would explore his anger and emotion a bit more, get inside his head.
It would have been cool to have Lucindra return, set in good old New York, Raph hasn't seen her in years, she needs his help, ya know something like that.

This was an ok issue. Just the opening to a bigger story.
For those wondering:
Shadow is 14 in this issue, she was 13 when she went all goth and joined Lilith's cult. She's 18 currently in Volume 4. This story occurs about 3 years before Volume 4.
In Vol 4 issue 1 it was mentioned that 15 years had passed since vol 2 (Shadow was around 2 in that). And since Vol 4 started at least a year has passed.
I liked the Ralph joke. *Raph barfs "RALPH!" "Funny..I thought his name was Raph.."
Kinda hits close to home cuz some people call me Ralph's Girl instead of Raph's Girl....major pet peeve of mine too.. :P
Lulu I thought was cute for a little witchling.
I didn't think it was too quick for Sloane to forgive Shadow considering a year had passed since Shadow killed her.
