Wow. A new TMNT comic already? I guess it's true. Actually, though, it's two Wednesdays from now (15 Aug)

"Casey In Point." Think you know Casey Jones? Guess again! In this issue, co-plotted by Peter Laird, we learn the true, never-before-revealed origin of everyone's favorite hockey-stick-wielding vigilante! Or do we? Bonus pin-up by Christian Colbert!

32 pages, black and white, $3.25, in stores on August 15.

Also agreed with Putrescent. Crossing my fingers on this one.

Yea.. Diamond puts their new lists up on Mondays while Midtown puts em up Friday nights.

Thought it was fast too but Midtown's never been wrong. I thought they were gonna be releasing their Tales comics (Tales of the TMNT and Tales of Raphael) together each month.... guess not.

But if ya still don't believe me go here and scroll down to Independents - Mirage Studios:

Just so long as it's to my face and not safely hidden in the back pages of a comic book like it was the last time.

OH, PLEASE NO!!!! DON'T EVEN SAY SOMETHING LIKE THAT!!!!

The fact that something as outrageous as a magic hockey stick can't even be taken as a joke says a lot about the fandom's faith in Peter. That such faith is non-existent for so many people is quite sad.

Putre, youve got it all wrong. It's a magic hockey mask. It originally made a snowman come to life, then it happened to fall on a cardboard cut out of a man. :tangel:

I wonder if Hun might make his Mirage debut in this issue? That could be an interesting angle for Casey's origin.

IT'S OUT!!!

And no, guys, no Hun cameo.

I must say, this issue had me worried--but it kicked butt!!!

Splendid writing, splended ending. I actually forgot that there was a twist ending. Remember: "Or do we?" Well, this did not let me down at all. I loved it!

Good job, Black!

The only thing I feel I should say is that the art wasn't my favorite. However, that's just because I'm so used to the styles of Jim Lawson and Frank Fosco.

And best of all, we finally got to see what Torchy's looks like!

Crap, it IS out! I thought for certain it would be out next Wednesday, but that shows what I know.

Have it in my hand right now, seems to be quite sufficiently badass, and gets pretty deep into Casey Jones' head for a minute. Will post a proper review later tonight.

Looks good, Jake & Diego!

I was late to a training for work due in part to my going out of the way to buy Tales 37. The place was hard to find anyway, I had a panic attack, and had to call various people to locate it. Nobody questioned me about it and I hope to not be in trouble.

Anyhow...

No wonder Donatello was the one telling this tale. Why? Because Casey combined Raphael and Michelangelo to describe how he was...and made Davy be just like Leonardo!!!

Yeah, it was odd to hear Casey talking about a brother since we'd never heard of one before. Reading this issue my mind drifted back to the TMNT movie I'd just watched and Casey's line about "if it were my brother, I'd find a way to work it out." So I wonder if he wasn't drawing some inspiration from the Turtles too.

It was also funny to hear Donny mention Jung and Myers-Briggs and personality testing. Don - "These are the sort of things I like to think about." Apparantly, us fans do too since we've had topics trying to pin down the Turtles personality types before.;)

I almost skipped thru Don's psychology lesson. I was like "Oh hum... learned this in high school pyschology class..."

But yea as soon as Casey said he had a brother named Davy I groaned and wondered why his parents would do that to a kid.

But yea... it was a good story all the same even tho we didn't really find anything out (other than Casey's dad being in the military). The artwork was pretty ok. Casey looked a bit like what Wolverine looks like currently in Wolverine Origins.

CONTRADICTION ALERT! CONTRADICTION ALERT! ERROR! ERROR! (Powers down)

Their names weren't mentioned but they were there. Casey told uh Jim that he and his dad didn't have that good of a relationship. But Im not sure WTF to believe of that story. The only actual info learned was that his dad was in the army (altho in the Dreamwave series he's a former Baseball player)

But if you want his dad's name it's Arnold Casey Jones sr. At least in the 2K3 series: This is his grave marker (Casey visits it in the ep Dragon's Rising):
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y72/Dierna/TMNT/DragonsRising/Cemetary1.jpg

However in TMNT Vol 1 #61 Casey's mom mentions to April that her husband's name was Herb and that he had died 25 years earlier. :ohwell:

Is it possible a large amount of it was written/drawn, then Laird stepped in and insisted on the twist? I have no idea.

That's the exact impression I got. It just feels like Jake submitted his story, it got accepted, and then Peter got wind of it and decided, "Oh no, can't let any of this actually be true, lemme add a 'twist!'"

I hope Jake feels better about it than I do.

Actually, if I remember correctly Jake originally said that Peter wanted to add the twist. But he could have written it somewhere else and then this was a completely different post. I don't have a very good memory. :P

But if what I'm saying is true, maybe I shouldn't be writing this, but I'm gonna go Mulder on you. O.o

Hm... Haven't read it, but I did read the comments here and apparently this whole thing is made up.

Meaning we don't really get to find out Casey Jones's origin? Is that true? Because maybe that's not such a bad thing?

I almost skipped thru Don's psychology lesson.

Geesh. First werewolves and now this. Soon, we'll start seeing my characters popping up in TMNT comics.

Raph's Girl

Ya know.. I was thinking and realized that the whole comic is a contradiction from previous Mirage books:

In Tales 37 Casey is raised by both is parents and being a typical teenage boy doesn't get along with his dad. He just reads comics and it's his bro who plays hockey till he's killed by Purple Dragons.

Whereas in TMNT vol 1 issue 61 Casey's mom tells April that her husband had died 25 years earlier and she had raised Casey alone (course then his name was Herb instead of Arnold Casey Jones sr.)

Roseangelo
08-11-2007, 11:46 AM
(course then his name was Herb instead of Arnold Casey Jones sr.)

The comic book and the cartoon are NOT the same thing. It is not a contradiction if the same character has a different name. Having a certain name in the cartoon series does not mean that his name has now changed in the comic book.

Reminds me of the Joker in "The Killing Joke" comic that tries to get into his origin -- "If I'm to have a past, I want it to be multiple choice!"

Except that's the Joker. And this is Casey Jones.

I was surprised to find this at my local comic store since the guy stopped carrying turtles awhile ago.

But I did and I read it, I was surprised really. I thought they were going to give another character an origin I didn't want to accept. But they did good. I guessed how the story was going to turn out the second they said his brother was into sports.

Might I add I was really surprised they used the word "f**" in this issue. Wow it's censored here too even.

I do not know where I saw this. But wasn't it mentioned somewhere that Casey was at least a decent student in school? And that he was not a tremendous troublemaker- not a goody two shoes or star student, but did not get into trouble often and got grades somewhat higher than the minimum required for passing?

Raph'N'Roll
08-15-2007, 06:05 PM
So we find out Casey isn't a homophobe but likes to bulls**t people, that's all, not the story I was expecting.
At least he didn't start life as a doodle, or an action figure brought to life by some mystical pixie, maybe no origin is better when ya look at what Aprils turned out to be.

I really liked this story and the ending really ticked me off it's sort of like wtf was the point of that at all....the art was ok I didn't hate it but I didn't care for it either.
Some of the panels where a bit hard to figure out what was going on like when some one was talking they looked ultra dramatic for whatever reason or the perspective was strange.
That really would have been a great story for casey.
It's sad I like something and it ends up he's a liar :|
So he's just some nutjob who likes to kick the crap out of people I guess.
Oh well we have our first gay character in mirage now and Casey saved him it was nice to see Casey is cool to everyone, but I'd think he would be what with hanging mutants and being in love with a cartoon woman...

For the second straight month, Tales of TMNT has been sold out in my local comic shop. Impressive, considering big stacks of the mainstream titles still sat on the shelf.

That's good news considering the store hadn't carried the book for years due to poor sales until #36 came out. Although I did convince them to order the movie prequel comics.

-sorry about the long post guys-

Can someone please help me out and explain what I am missing when I read this story??

I really agree that this issue is a case of "what's the point?"

After the 'twist', I literally laughed out loud, "what the f***?"
I was very angry.

If Casey's story is not true, this suggests a waste of my investment in this story (ie. getting involved in the emotion of this well-done story, getting excited about Casey finally opening up, etc.) and makes me feel cheated. And while "Davy Jones" may have been a clue to BS, its defintely not non-TMNT to have such a name, and its accepted that this family has no aversion to "Casey", even if its solely a middle name.

Is the message that, as Raph 'n' Roll and Putrescent pointed out, Casey is a nutjob who beats up people and also is a good BS artist?

Or is there any kind of truth to this story? A metaphorical one, or that Casey's family in this story are playing the part of some other people or events that truly did happen to Casey?

Not that I don't like the script or the art, which are great, and its good to see consistently interesting art in Tales. My problem is with the overall plot, and its associated "twist". The only gripes I would have with the script are that:
- as has been established, it contradicts that 'Herb' died 25 years ago (Casey would have been young, right?). Specific past facts in Mirage are very precious as there are so few things we know about the Mirage characters, especially Casey.
- if "Davy Jones" was supposed to be a clue in the script.
- all the very convenient "bashings for no reason" that seem to go on (ie. how did Jim meet those guys? Davy got beat up on Casey's doorstep?)

I have always been very accepting of anything "official" that's been done with TMNT. I have loved anything that comes from the elite Mirage crew, being of the opinion that if they are doing it, then it must be right, because they are the ones that "grew" these characters and this universe. Tales has been a big part of that, being under such well-executed, tight control by Murph and Laird. I know this story doesn't change the characters or the universe at all, which is exactly my complaint to begin with, but they shouldn't be wasting such precious characters (and my precious time and money) on pointless exercises like this.

I know there have been many fun, pointless, contradictory stories before... but this was never treated or presented (at least initially) in that fashion; plus its a big Tales Vol 2 story, Tales 2 being an outlet with a big focus on in-continuity stories.

So, while Jake and Diego did great work, I would need some further validation of this issue before I value it as much as any other issue.

Thanks.

I think Casey was concocting up this story to show how Raphael feels (and possibly Michelangelo as well). Donatello is narrating it because he is the only Turtle not metaphorized in this story. "Davy" would be Leonardo, while "Casey" would be Raph and/or Mikey.

I do prefer the NT Casey.

I liked it. Was it a waste of time? In one sense it doesn't add much to continuity, but you did get a story.

I thought it was funny he would yank someone's chain like that, and it was in character.

But can one of the creators tell me what's the point of Don opening some mystical tomb or something at the beginning? I didn't see any connection with that and the story.
