View Full Version : Making your kids turtle fans...

Does any one here have a specific plan on how they're gonna expose their kids to TMNT?:D
I've been succesful at turning 4 boy cousins, 2 girl cousins and (temporarliy) my sister into turtle fans. It was pretty simple, they're all younger so when they saw me watching/playing with turtle stuff they had to get in on the action and now they watch and collect toys on their own. I took them all to the new movie with me and they all loved it (the 4 boys were conviniently fans of different turtles before seeing it, now all except the Leo fan love Mikey). None of them are as into it as me, but they like it.
Anyways, I'm not sure which incarnation I should show my kids first (I don't have any by the way, no time soon either). They're are so many versions, some more kid freindly than others, and by the time I'm old enough and ready for kids I hope to have a full TMNT library of DVD's and comics. The easiest way (my dream, as well your too I bet) would be if there's a TMNT cartoon on 10-15 years from now.
Any thoughts, commments? (I'd especially like to hear from actuall parents).

Id start from the begining.....I know the comics were technicly first, but Id start with the orginal cartoon....plus its easy since there are DVD sets out.
After that Id show them the original movies then go on to the 2k3 cartoon....but NOT before they are finished with everything else...no rush....so they can take the time and understand everything and how the series works.

I don't want to sound like a tool but honestly I'd introduce the idea and if my children didn't want to be turtle fans, that would have to be it. I myself will forever be a turtleholic but my kids don't have to be if they don't want to.
Anyway, I'd just show them the OT episodes and if they liked those, I'd go from there.

Children may enjoy it. I liked soto and III a lot when I was younger. I didn't realize it was a complete suckfest until I got a bit older.

Children are amazingly impressionable. Most Star Wars fans I know with kids have little Star Wars fans. My friend has an almost 2-year-old daughter and a (I think) 5-year-old nephew. Both of them are extremely receptive to what she shows them on TV. She's shaping little geeks with Doctor Who, Darkwing Duck, Fraggle Rock, TMNT, etc.

i work at a Tae Kwon Do studio and only 3 kids actually liked the ninja turtles, but when the movie came out, i kept telling everyone: Don't talk bad about the turtles, they rock out louder than anything else. Now... all except for 6 kids there love the ninja turtles. Same goes for the transformers but not as much. ;)

 .......well Id show them a preview and explain that it was the worst of the bunch and if they were still curious...sure Id let them watch it....might as well so they can get it over with,if in fact they were that curious to see what it was like.

Though I am not planning on having kids, if I were to adopt, I would expose my child to what I enjoy. Then it's up to her to decide whether she likies it or not.

Certainly, If I show them some TMNT and they dislike it he/she is still getting their dinner that night, but I would prefer that they love it.

I hated it at the age to watch it. Children are'nt stupid.
I'll show them the original cartoon, but also the new series, then TMNT I, SOTO, and TMNT, before the comics.

My parents didn't force me to enjoy what they used to enjoy back in the days.
I think I should continue this noble tradition.

No one said anything about forcing stuff upon anyone. But I'm certainly going try to share the joy TMNT brings me with my children, and we're discussing what would be the best way to introduce them to it. It would be great to have a little turtle fan or two, but if they don't like it, no biggie, dosen't mean I have to quit. But if you want to hide the turtles from your children for some odd reason, by all means...

I agree with you. There cant be a much lamer thing in the world than an old ass Turtle fan and his fat chick Turtle fan eggplant wife trying to get their kid into the TMNT just because thats the franchise they happen to be into, especially if there isnt any current Turtles media being produced. On the other hand, who cares.

That's right ass hole, because every one is an "old ass" by the time they have kids, and if they're a TMNT with a wife, she has to be a "fat chick eggplant".

What'd I say?! :o That rude attitude doesnt look as good on you as it does on Raphael, pal! Sorry I made such a wild generalization, I'm sure sexy, tennis playing young men and women who both care enough about TMNT to plot out schemes to get their kids into them fall in love all the time.

Nevermind subjecting our offspring to TMNT, how about we subject this guy to Al Pacino's speech from GlenGarryGlenRoss?

Yes, but it sucks as a direct sequel to "TMNT I". SOTO ain't exactly "TMNT II" in my opinion (regarded as a separate movie, even tho' technically it is a separate movie). It's actually "TMNT I Part 2", since it takes place, like, weeks after the first movie and is closely tied with it.
And it fails miserably.
Although, to be very honest, "TMNT I" ain't a freaking "Godfather" too :|
Making your kids into fans? Hm, I'm not to sure. I don't really want to do it unless I'm sure that they would have a chance of liking it. It's like getting a motercycle crazed boy into playing with Barbies, or a pretty pink princess to go and wrestle some greased pigs. Not really possible.
If I have kids and they are curious about anything I liked back in the day, I will get out my figurines, drawings, and DVDs and hope that they will enjoy it. It's their choice to jump on or off the band wagon. I don't want to force TMNT down their throats ever since they are born. I don't think anyone will really want to do that with their kids.
Honestly, it's up to them if they want to be fans. No need to pressure them into something that they might not like. Like my parents tried to do with me and dolls... :ohwell:

All I can do is hope they will get into it. Of course I was pretty much the opposite of my parents and I caused them a good bit of trouble :P
If in fact "What goes around comes around" who knows what kind of karmic payback I will get when I do have kids.
Ouch though if they don't like turtles even a little bit

You're not funny
Some people disagree with you, its crazy. Heres some praise from some guy to back up my shocking claim:
"Sorry this is totally off topic but this line cracked me up. Zing!"
So I'm capable of at least one good zinger, anyway.
In any case, I wasnt trying to be funny so much as tease you since you act like a child in almost every thread I'm in and I figured I'd reciprocate. Whats also funny is that you call me an "ass hole", but in response to SewerBull you wrote "But if you want to hide the turtles from your children for some odd reason, by all means..." which seems to indicate how agitated you get with people online and your habit of talking down to people who have disagreed with or upset you. You added that he was doing something "odd" by having, like most people, no interest in turning his kids onto what by then may be a dead property, and claiming that he wanted to "hide" the turtles, when he only expressed that he was going to follow his parents lead and let his kids follow their own path.
In all honesty, I have no problem with parents getting their kids a TMNT toy or movie out of fondness for enjoying such things in their childhood, and I'm sure thats the only reason I ever played with marbles or jacks, but I know that some of you will go the route of horrible Star Wars parents who try to get their kids into it because they want a friend.

I responded to him civily because he didn't make fat jokes/generalizations.

4. Again with insults and generalizations?
1. In defense of your "you're not funny" remark, I grabbed a quote of someone commenting on something that I said which they found zing! worthy.
2. I think you responded more cattily than civily, trying to make his statement appear "odd" by suggesting that he intends to "hide the turtles" when he never said anything that extreme. Its like you cant deal with the fact that he disagrees with the idea of passing down mutant ninja fandom and that something must be inherently weird about that.
3. And you couldnt disagree with him without adding a little jab at the end, which you do often and makes you come off as haute.
4. Yes.

I wouldn't say I tried to get my son into liking the turtles, so much as I thought he might like the show better than the usual stuff he's been watching at the time. I never forced it on him, but ran an experiment of sorts to see if he would like the same thing his old man is into.
I would put on the 2K3 series occasionally to see if he would dig it, only to find out that he would watch the show, but not get into it as far as I would think. He wasn't into the characters, the story, or anything. To him, it was just another cartoon to pass the time. I even gave him some toys from the new line, but they wound up on the bottom of his toy box.
But then I put on the OT and he really liked it. He was into the comedic style, the camp, the flash, and the flair. His favorite turtle became Michaelangelo and he even had the opportunity to wear a Halloween costume (though he decided on Spider-Man instead). I thought it was kind of cool that a child growing up into the era of the new series would end up liking the old one more. He even loves the movies more than the 2K3 show.
Now, whenever we watch 'toons on DVD, we pick out the OT. It's the only incarnations of the turtles he'll watch -- in cartoon format, that is.

That is pretty sweet. At least it shows that the OT is more than a 80's/90's fad and has lasting appeal to children. Theres really nothing with quite the same energy and humor and interesting characters out right now.
