I saw Leo and Raph today. I also got pics on my phone, which I can upload later.
It's kinda interesting that the Playmates site doesn't even have Mike and Don pictured and the only ones that have been spotted are Raph and Leo.

Saw these last week at Target, they were $9.99 there. They had 3 of each turtle (so mike and don are out). It has a little sticker for the big foot mail away on the front of the packaging. I almost bought Leo but then remembered it doesn't count until after september first. These are going to pegwarm just as much as the rip cord turtles so I suggest waiting if you want these and get them after september first so you can use them for the mail away.
Another thing I noticed was the TMNT logo was in gold. Dunno what's up with that but it was sorta neat.

What's the sticker for? Is it to mail away or is it just adverising the Mail-Away? Thanks

It's a RAZR, but I have Cingular/AT&T. I use bluetooth to get my pics off. I believe Verizon disables their phones so that you have to email them to yourself to get them off the phone (with whatever charges are involved in that). :dead:

No you have to go to their website and log on to get them off your phone. My roommate has them and that's what he has to do.

Interesting, I didn't see the sticker on the figures you saw rose. The sticker is just a picture of bigfoot that says see website or inside for details.

I really don't even have to say anything. Those 2 statements pretty much sum up the entire 2k3 TMNT line. They had a good going at first but opted for looney pointless varients that peg warmed and killed the line, not to mention they made the toys we REALLY wanted scarce due to the multiple varients in a pack with one Triceriton and one Baxter or something.
I still wonder if this signifies the death and burial of the FF line?

You do realise if it wasn't for playmates TMNT would be an obscure B&W comic book that no one would remember.
I think that, other than the rediculous varients and pointless crap like that, they usually did do a good job. I think the Movie figures could have been better sculpted/painted. but all and all, better than some of Mattel's recent stuff. Not even talking about the lead paint issue.

You know, I bashed these figures in another thread because they are a stupid idea, but something about seeing them in the packaging makes me weak. I think I will end up buying them in the end even though I think they are rediculous.

I say bring on the toys and i'll buy whatever they throw at me, i mean hey i didnt come as far as i have collecting to stop now...i guess thats how they make there money though with the collectors that feel like they have to have everything lol (thats me) ...it's kind of like the whole beanie baby thing they would just add like a hat or something and just call it new......so at least playmates is putting in a little more thought than that...allthough i do agree the old tmnt line is awesome! and will probably never be beat out!

You can still be a completeist if Playmates makes good TMNT toys instead of crappy ones.

It would have happened no matter what...
Hit Cartoons = Tie in products
Simple equation really. It could have been Hasbro or even Fisher price. The comic was not as obscure as you might think.

Ooh.. burned.
But seriously dude, a massive collection is not worth maxed out credit cards. There will still be toys on eBay when you get them paid off.

It's not that simple. I agree the TMNT comic wasn't that obscure relatively speaking. To anyone outside of comics it would have been, but not to the comics industry. It did that whole black and white boom. Still the only reason they got a cartoon was because of the toy deal. In fact it was playmates who said we'll make the toys, but you have to get us a cartoon deal. Then it was easy to get a cartoon deal when they know there are other companies involved with merch like toys to support it. End result is the biggest hit property of the late 80's.
But yeah without that toy deal they would probably have just kept making the comics. Who knows what would have happened, the only reason they might have gotten recognized by Playmates was because they never had a boys toy line before. Hasbro, Kenner, Mattel, and the other toy companies of the time might have deemed it too wacky and TMNT would have just continued as a comic until Eastman and Laird ran out of steam. Maybe they would have found success with it somewhere else, but I doubt it would have been as huge as it was, and there probably wouldn't have been many video games or any movies at all.

I think as early as 85. They were the first licensed TMNT product.

I wonder why people took a risk on those prior to TMNT really being within a year old.

I think it probably gets overlooked because of how HUGE the boom was when TMNT hit TV and toyshelves, but the reason that stuff happened in the first place is because the TMNT comic became a HUGE phenomenon with just the first issue. A smaller scale of huge, yes, but absolutely HUGE considering its small, independent, B&W status.
And Kevin and Peter did a lot of smart things in those early years and fell into contact with a lot of the right people.
There's a fantastic article in the December 1992 issue of Smithsonian that chronicles the TMNT's evolution from B&W comic book to action figures and cartoons and movies, etc. It's honestly one of the best TMNT articles I've ever seen in print. Highly recommended. Your local library should be able to get you access to it with either old physical archives or electronic archives.
