According to most rumours, Pete and MJ's marraige will be retconned as "never happening", with the characters agreeing that their timeline will be sacrificed to save May's life. MJ insists that if they are meant to be together, they will find each other again, or in Joe Quesada's words "annualing it would only be worse", so instead theyll just DELAY their relationship again to explore a single Spidey with the option of bringing them back together and restoring their memories when they want to explore it again.
Knowing this, I'm a lot better. Joe has become one of the most hated men in Marvel comics history, and with good reason, but hes handling this delicatley as possible. The renewal of "MJ Loves Spidey" is also a good sign of satisfying the fanbase.

I heard the first issue of this storyline was pretty lousy, with the angst turned up as high as it's ever been.
This sounds like pretty screwy continuity. So now when you're reading the Venom stories and whatnot, you're just supposed to imagine that MJ isn't there?

Crisis of Infinate Spideys...
So does this do anything about Peter's revealing his identity during his time with Pro Registration forces?

Yeah, its going to retcon it, but the price is the marraige, and MJ becomes a superhero

Its just a longer "House of M"-style reality, only it affects just Peter's life. Its to keep Marvel's landmark character and MJ in their own little peaceful world whilst exploring new relationships that dont compromise their original love for each other, as well as liberate Spidey from the fractured Marvel Universe suffering from the registration movement. Spidey will likely be one of the pardoned heroes who refused registration, but will remain opposed to it.
Remember Mackie's run? Yeah, me neither. I place the beggining of the JMS run after at least 1997's titles, "The Final Chapter" (the last failed attempt at a reboot), and Mackie's last story, just for continuity purposes, but virtually everything else he did (barring the excellent "House of Osborn" that he wrote), was everything that you DONT do with Spider-Man. Paul Jenkins run is the one I count.
I guess Joe just wants to clean up things, and its better the two characters who have suffered the most besides The Hulk have nothing to do with the continuity until he's finished clearing up things like Cap's return.

The guy taking over from Straczynski sounds pretty enthusiastic for old school Spidey stuff. I'll see if I can hunt down his interveiw. And Amazing is going be the only Spidey book running after this arc (I think...) so that's a definate bonus. Marvel's been pushing the DARKEST HOUR EVER thing harder than DC did for IC, so things starting to turn around for the flagship character can only be good.

Thats why I think Joe wants to put him to the test before they reunite Peter and MJ (as a part of the CW aftermath, the marraige retcon is a good idea, as a direction to take Spidey, it isnt) and see if he can sustain that enthuisasm.
Amazing will be one of two Spidey titles, as before (which is ridiculous this time, as opposed to the last time all the individual titles were GOOD), but it will be weekly. Quesada is also notorious for changing his mind on statistics and titles so dont expect it to last as long as this idea.

...Great scott. Woah, this is heavy...
I hate when they say "we're not using the Vulture" though, because well...JMS didnt dip too far into the rouges gallery either for "Amazing". "Amazing" was virtually old school-free, it was Bendis and Jenkins that used the older enemies more. Nice to see Doc Ock brought back, but lets face, he was one of the few that JMS used.

I liked aspects of it, it was an idea that had a strong beggining, a poor middle (Morlun not being explained properly), excellent scenes in the hospital, and a terrific rooftop ending. It was the end of JMS' last consistently entertaining issue before May was shot.

I only really enjoyed Peter David's part in it in all honesty, mainly because it actually had Peter putting the fact he now had connections to the entire MU to use. But I enjoyed JMS' use of Spidey as an Avenger a lot more than anything in the actual New Avengers book. Whether that was because Spidey was at the forefront as well as the comic releif or it actually felt like the mix of classic Avenger and street level mystery stories New Avengers should have been I don't know.

I haven't read 616 Spidey since he became a New Avenger. Not that I didn't like it, I just lost track and The Other didn't sound too good to me. With a new creative team, it might be time to give ASM another shot. They are trying something new with these teams, and that'll be worth checking out to see what develops.

There trying the same s*it that John Byrne did in 1999, he left, sales plummeted, Mackie flopped, they brought MJ back.
JMS's run was only criticised because he was being told to write crap by Quesada, Gale and the new team will have to follow his instructions too.

Having read "Swing Shift", the first of the "Brand New Day" universe storylines
It seems Quesada's covered his ass. MJ is implied in the story as the only person who remembers the marraige (meaning SHE is the one who makes the deal with Mephisto) with Peter and everyone else oblivious. This is a great idea, as for once it launches MJ as a tragic hero in her own right who gives up everything to save the people she loves, and preserves the twenty years without compromising the marraige and leaving it open for a restoration.
Whilst it means that Pete and MJ have become just as inconsistent as Scott and Jean Grey, at least it's not INSULTING us anymore. I mean, I'm fine with Jean letting Scott pick Emma Frost because she knows she'll always "die on him" and her destiny as Phoenix will always divide them after a few years, but MJ being aware of the marraige and letting Peter live without her burden? Good way of stalling the couple

Nope. Which means rather than benefit Spider-Man AT ALL, fans will just start appreciating MJ's character instead because she will remember the continuity we've known for years.
Gwen Stayc and Harry Osborn will also be ressuerected.
For me, Spider-Girl (which is out-selling "Amazing"), is the true canon, in an utterly convulted non-sensical way, but at least it HONOURS everything and moves forward. There's so many Spidey titles (and "Ultimate Spider-Man" is largely becoming the current definitive version), that they can afford to "rest" the 616 Spider-Man character

I'd actually like it if they brought baby May back. Not so much to make Spider-Girl offical canon so much as to just actually take the Parker family in a direction consisting of more than three people. Having Franklin Richards cemented the FF as a family story, and JMS proved that's good Spidey material if everyone just had the balls to do it.

JMS is probably one of the top four Spider-writers ever. Right up there with Lee Stern, and Defalco.
I WOULD make Spider-Girl canon, distant future canon like 2099 (I have to commend Marvel for bringing him back as a member of the "Exiles", however breif), where you never see the characters age that much and never reach it.
FF is a great example, not only is Franklin the ideal "retcon magnet" (and a stupendously lovable character) because he can contain pocket universes (ideal way to explain "Brand New Day"'s timeline), but he's only gradually aged, and with the addition of a sister, he can become a teenager and another little FF baby is running around to take his place.
The FF are treated with more intelligence and respect than either the attempts at giving Spidey or the X-Men, Marvel's biggest draws, a "family". Jean and Scott? The ever convulted "Cable", the ever convulted "Rachel", and then Phoenix seperates the two eternally. Scott's relationship with Emma Frost is the first real sign of them acknowledging the consequences of that and it's kind of refreshing, but Scott and Jean are entirely different examples considering Jean's destiny and her love for Wolverine forming an eternal triangle.
This all comes down to the fact that the FF have rarely been abused the way Spidey has been in any title. That's the consequences of being more succesful, more mainstream.
The more succesful 616 Spider-Titles have all been limited series. Marvel should stop trying to screw up the timeline and REST the character, the timeline, and just trust in US and a few maxi-series from big writers like Kevin Smith, JMS, and Whedon rather than continue to cripple the character.

Loki and Ezekiel to...
If reality in so far as it relates to Spidey has been altered, could Loki still owe him a favour for saving his daughter? Ezekiel sill living could easily be explained as the totemistic forces becoming involved, or the events after the marriage never resulting in his death. But hey, its Marvel, and if the Orbweaver or whatever that thing was called can bring Morlun back then they could probably bring Uncle Ben with Ben Reilly’s powers.
So has the delay affected Friendly Neighbourhood shipping in the UK at all? haven't been able to find the second chapter yet and I want to be up to date on this.

The Spidey in New Avengers has to be a Skrull. There is no indication of Spidey signing up with Strange and Cage's outlaw team anywhere to be seen in Back and Black, he hasn't left May's side throughout the entire arc except to deal with Hyde's home grown designer drug Spider-Men and take out Arrow, and if he and MJ are off in another timeline during WWH and essentially vanished off the grid after Civil War then the skull’s have the perfect sleeper agent to sneak into the Secret Avenger left overs and keep an eye on the volatile unregistered heroes.
Mind you, a lot of that is speculation (although I'm pretty sure of it might turn out to be fact unless Bendis just isn't paying attention to what's going on outside his Marvel universe and is sticking to his joking Spidey) since I haven't read the whole of Back in Black.

Do yourself a favour and DONT read "Back In Black", it's a waste of time (especially for people like me who dont count anything canon now), but it IS large evidence that Peter IS a Skrull...or, and this is probably more true, proof of what happens when you let a merchandise franchise's success kill a character in far sadder ways than the Clone Saga
I'd love to beleive Pete's a Skrull, and that even MJ is a Skrull, that Mephisto is playing around with the false Spidey and MJ (sleeper agents) doing his own part to delay their efforts at invasion, because he's at stake too if they manage to start impersonating Doc Strange and know how to weave magic.

Really, I've tolerated Ultimate Spider-Man more because I'm used to Bendis. When he's sane, he writes sane stuff (his best work has been every chance he gets to use The Kingpin and Moon Knight) Unfortunatly, nobody ever edits Bendis, so a lot of his more drug-dependent storylines get over (I loved Ultimate Clone Saga, but I dont remotley count Ultimate Demogoblin as having ever happened, and it's likely going to happen again)

Ultimate Clone Saga is a great, fun story, but yeah, MJ is Ultimate Demogoblin. Which isnt the first time he's screwed up the character. Dont get me wrong, MJ is very well written for the most part and IS the kind of MJ I like, but Peter had to tell her he was Spider-Man when she and half the class saw Peter bitten by the spider and saw him react badly to it.
When Bendis writes great Ultimate Spidey, it's usually anything involving The Kingpin, Osborn, Octavius, Venom, Carnage, Gwen, or Moonknight, but when Bendis is on crack, we get Ultimate Demogoblin, the German Mutant filler story, and Black Cat being much older than Peter

"One More Day" Part Four spoilers
I liked it. I thought it didnt "erase" the marraige at all, it strengthens it whilst giving new readers a chance to read "Brand New Day" learning about it, and become sympathetic to the lonley, and directionless Peter. My only criticism is, amongst other minor quibbles, was that this wasnt about Peter at all, this was one of MJ's defining moments. Her speech about Peter finding her again one day was echoched by the breif glare he gave as she left the High School Reunion. The return of Harry Osborn was the only genuially interesting aspect of the story, and it makes you wonder if Harry's tortured soul arranged for Mephisto to restore him to life this way and gain revenge on Peter, who has been reduced to a social outcast who still lives with his Aunt. MJ remembers the marraige, meaning it can be restored if fans complain loud enough
The other minor quibble was adding the last few pages of the wedding from the classic 1986 ASM Annual to rub it in reader's faces, and the devotions from Joe, Stan Lee, and others to JMS, who had made it no secret he thought this storyline sucked and even threatened to take his name out of the final two parts.
So "OMD" was as people feared, another misfire in Spidey's long directionless tenure under Joe Quesada's watch. I hope Dan Slott and the revolving writers have fun, but I am finished with 616. Ultimate Spider-Man and the TRUE canon of Spider-Girl (as far as my own opinion goes) continues to thrive and rarely dissapoint (US does sometimes, but not consistently). I dont hate Joe, World War Hulk and Captain America are proof he can produce some solid stuff, but he doesnt know what to do with Spider-Man

I'm not sure I'm a big fan of what happened based on what I've read about it:
I just hate Quesada's thing about de-aging Peter Parker. I thought that's what Ultimate Spider-Man was for. I think the marriage thing is a cop out for not really trying to make an older Peter Parker work.
Plus what kind of hero makes a deal with someone like Mephisto? If Cap were still alive he'd be ashamed! :)
Plus the return of Harry Osborn just seems really weird an unnecessary. His death is one of those top Spider-Man moments. There are some deaths that I don't mind being retconned because they weren't that great (I'd love to see Steve Rogers come back) but Harry's was so well done I don't see the need to bring him back.
If I hear that BND is good I might give it a shot, but this last storyline sounds dumber than Clone Saga.

It wasn't bad, but I still hated the reasoning behind the ending.
For Chrissake, Marvel, kill Aunt May and be done with it. MJ sacrificing her marriage to save an old lady that should have died a looong time ago? Why? Because she is such an important figure in Peter's life? So is MJ herself, if not a stronger part. If I had to choose, I'd pick my wife over my surrogate mother. Jesus.
