AFTER MUCH TONGUE BITING MURPH HAS FINALLY SHOWN THE NECA FOOT SOLDIER!!!!!
Fans attending the San Diego comicon will get the first glimps of this beautiful prototype.
You can view the original post at Murphs blog Here and leave comments. (http://the-5th-turtle.blogspot.com/2008/07/feet-dont-fail-me-now.html)

IMPORTANT SAN DIEGO COMICON MOUSER INFORMATION!
The 3 pack version is jointed at the legs and has a ball jointed
neck. We did not use the jointed jaw for the 3 pack due to costs and
wanting to put 3 Mousers in one pack.
We have a battle damaged Mouser and a Mouser with articulated jaw
ready for the future release to general retail.
The SDCC version is unique to SDCC

INFORMATION ABOUT THE NECA TMNT FIGURES THAT YOU SHOULD KNOW!
Murph says:The NECA license is incredibly broad. It includes all iterations of
all characters from all universes.
The schedule, though, is pretty modest at the moment. Next up are
those black and white variants, then a Foot Soldier. Beyond that, we
haven't seen a thing nor heard a peep.
The contract goes for 3 years I think, pretty standard.
The interesting thing in that we've just granted them an expansion of
the contract so that it includes lots of weird little items,
everything from stickers to posters to lamps. However, they have yet
to submit designs for any of 'em.
Well I hope this helps everyone even those doubting thomases who don't think the line will last long.
Also tells us what Neca can do.

Lovin it. I'm already excited for these. I have a sickness where whenever I see a new fig that I like, I automatically buy it. It's a pain really. Money always seems to be short.
Man, gotta love Murphy...i really hope this turns out great...

I'd prefer that they look like they did in the Return to New York arc.
But I'd still be happy with Volume 1, Issue 1

I'd rather they looked like the did at the end of the original E&L run (Leo+10-11). Well, at first at least. THEN they can do some in the RTNY style. 8)
Props to Mirage for rejecting NECA's first design - it's horrible!

Well, aren't both of those styles fairly similar to begin with?
Leo+10-11 is like the pinacle of Eastman and Laird's style joined together.
RTNY is Lawson imitating that style.
That's how I've always seen it anyway.
There are deffinite slight differences. But body proportion wise, they're fairly similar. And I prefer that compared to the gremlin style turtles in issue 1. :D

I really hope correct size scale is something that goes into these figures.

Oh, it's definitely similar. I personally prefer the pure E&L look of Leo+10-11, which as you note is the pinnacle of their combined styles. But I think RTNY is different enough so that you can get different figures out of it.
The interesting thing with RTNY is that each of the three books had a different, single inker. Because of that each book ends up with a slight, though distinct, look of its own.

Well, I'm not convinced that I'd be able to pick up on the difference. So I'd be blissfully happy with either one of those. They can make them Leo+10-11 style and you can tell me that it's based off of RTNY and we can both be happy. :-D
I really hope correct size scale is something that goes into these figures.
How...do you mean?
Scale compared to their weapons?
Scale compared to the human characters if they ever release them?
Scale comapring their individual body parts to each other?!?!

Correct height.
Is it determined that they're going to make them in a certain ratio?
Otherwise if they just come out with the turtles in the first wave, any height they make them will be "to scale" becasue there won't be anything to compare them to.
However, if they later come out with Shredder, and he's the same height as the guys, then there'll be a problem.
So I'm assuming you're hoping that NECA plans ahead and makes sure all the figures are scaled well as they come out? You're confusing me with your fancy figure talk.

Yes and they would be morons only to make the 4 turtles.
And actully they do have things Mirage could supply them with as far as the height of each character is concerned.

A few things about that drawing popped out at me. The neck seems to thin and doesn't seem to be properly centered to the body. The head seems a bit small compared to the body too. The toe on the far right seems odd compared to the other 3.
The style seems pretty early Mirage to me though.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v487/VaughnJohnny/NECA1.jpg
At the same time it reminds me a lot of how the turtles were drawn on the old figure packaging, especially the little comic strip on the back that explained their origin.
I kind of liked what the statues did. They weren't a perfect representation of the first page. Close enough while making them a bit leaner or something. Here's what I'm talking about:

I will say the drawing isn't bad, but I agree it looks too much like a combination of the current show and the old toy line.
Now if they make them look exactly like the TMNT did in that issue, I'd be psyched! I also agree they need to make more than just the 4 turtles. This would clearly outsell Playmates with collectors, and give them a message that better TMNT products are going to give them better profits.

Guys, I am so hyped about all this I can't believe it!!!
And on ninjaturtles.com, there is this update, by the by:
NECA, National Entertainment Collectible Association, has signed a license to produce and distribute collector's market TMNT action figures, statues, busts, weapon prop replicas and bobbleheads based on the TMNT comic books from Mirage Studios. These items will be avaialble to small independent retailers, independent toy stores, comic and hobby shops, and specialty chains. The design and development process has just gotten started, so prduct won't be available for awhile. We'll post news from the folks at NECA as soon as possible!

I agree-they should make the turtles heads bigger, the way they were in the first issues.

NECA will get it right. They just need a couple tries to get warmed up. And the license holders wont let them put out sub par product. the powers that be know that this is most likely the only chance they will get to put out quality specialty market figures, so they're not going to settle for anything less than what the fans want.

I'm surprised no one posted this yet.
Here's Murphy's update from today:
As yet I'm unable to tell you too much about NECA's plans for the TMNT but here's the little I'm allowed to share:
1. The first wave of 6 figures will be out in Spring 08; the second 6 in Fall 08.
2. Current/initial plans/waves only include figures based on characters from the early Mirage comics.
3. The first wave will consist of the 4 Turtles, a Foot Soldier and, and... sorry, can't tell you. ;)

I'm just so glad that a company like NECA is taking a crack at the Turtles. Everything they do is just so sweet, look at their Pirates of the Carribean figures.
No matter what, I'm sure that these figures will be unlike anything Playmates has ever been able to deliver. I'll keep buying Playmates because TMNT toys are like crack to me but that doesn't mean I'm not gonna grumble about the quality. If Playmates wants to step up sales, they need to start making better toys. Period.
I plan on buying these things by the case. How could I not?

I dunno... remember, NECA made Pirates of the Carribean toys along side Zizzle. Thing is, they sold at 2 different outlets. While Zizzle's stuff was in Target and other big name mainstream shopping chains, NECA's line was in places like Spencer gifts and local chains like Newburry Comics.
So it all matters on which group of people is willing to buy what toys.
And if these do sell better, I hope Playmates takes the hint.

Normally my figs are all MOC, but I've taken all my new movie figs out, partially to get the UPC codes for Bigfoot and partially because I think the generic packages look like crap. These aren't bad offerings for Playmates and they look much nicer out on my bookshelf.
When the NECA figs hit, I'm gonna try to score doubles of each so that I can have some for the shelf AND some to put away. I'm a fiend like that.

I agree with Peter the neck is extremely odd, it's the first thing I noticed. Everything else shown is beautiful. I'll buy 3 of each if not more, I'm not kidding. This is a dream line and we should treat it as such, so that NECA gets rewarded for beautiful toys, and Playmates gets dumped on for their dumpy toys.

This is awsome! I agree about the neck, I dont think they should thicken it but shorten it a little. Also, when I first saw it I didnt like the huge bandana tail, but now that I really look at it I kind of see how it would work. It would be REALLY awsome if the bandana was movable and you could move it from lying down flat position to the way it is here...

If this is any indication of what is to come from the new line of toys, we are in for a treat. So far I agree with everybody about the neck, it needs to be shortened. Will all of there bandanas be red? It would be cool to take the bandanas and belts off to allow it to be like a pet turtle. I would also like to see how some of the enemies from this new line will look. I WANT USAGI, especially in this style. A colored sculpt would be nice, because the paintjob we get could be bright and cartoony, or dark and dreary. I prefer realistic, so I want it to look like a real life ninja turtle. LOL.

I wouldn't worry about that. NECA always tries to get their likeness as close as possible to whatever they're trying to capture. They want to please the fans and never make big consessions for the sake of "kiddy appeal."

Meanwhile, I'm thrilled that NECA is using the early E&L style, as I still love the roughness and odd proportions of the TMNT from their first appearance. However, that doesn't mean that I wouldn't want to see the later E&L-styled Turtles figures at some point, as I like that look just as well. IMHO, the later appearance of the TMNT is definitely different enough to warrant a separate wave of Turtles.

My thoughts exactly. How many versions of Batman have been released by DC Direct? Lot's of ‘em, many of which feature more similarities than they do differences. Personally, I'd like to see the same thing happen with the Turtles. (Some might argue that there's not quite as much of a market for the TMNT, but that's beside the point.) In my opinion, the TMNT as rendered by A.C. Farley, Micahael Zulli, Rick Veitch, Eric Talbot, Mark Bode, and Michael Dooney's Pre-Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles—as well as a few others—would make for cool figures as well. Now THOSE are some TMNT variants I could actually get into.

Didnt read all the replies...but does anyone else find this first sculpt kinda silly looking?
It reminds me of the tortoise from those Bugs Bunny cartoons....its body is all round and saggy and it has little arms, while the neck sitcks out a bit....only with a TMNT head attached.
Anyone?.....well maybe not :ohwell:

That's how our beloved Turtles looked in the first issue of the comic, which is the look they're going for with these first figures. So I guess I'm too used to it to think of it as silly... but I am hoping they also make figures of the more refined Turtles seen after 10 or so issues.

Yeah,I know...but I didnt follow the comics, actually what got me into the TMNT was the original cartoon.
Well,Im sure these NECA figs will improve...it is the first sculpt afterall...plus those collector statues from awhile back do look cool...it was just this first sculpt that reminded me of the Bugs Bunny cartoon.

Yeah, wildcat, I know where you're coming from. I came into the TMNT with the advent of the old toon as well. So when I eventually saw the old comics, YEARS later, I thought they looked pretty shoddy. But as with many people I'm sure, they've become the classic look, no matter how many refinements were made. There's a sort of endearing quality, sentimental perhaps; a grittiness that, to me, symbolizes their quality of life that has been glossed over in subsequent adaptations. But yeah, taken out of context, they can look pretty frumpy. Grumpy old turtles.
I love it.

Looks nearly perfect to me (just fix the neck as Peter said).
Like most I would prefer Eastman and Laird's more refined look from around Leo/Vol. 1 #10-11 or Vol. 1 #50 but I can understand starting with Vol. 1 #1 TMNT for the first wave and saving the others for later waves.
I hope the 6th figure is Shredder!
Wave 2 I'm hoping for Splinter, April Casey, Foot Elite, Karai, Baxter Stockman with Mouser and a Triceraton (maybe save Karai fo a later wave and Fugitoid or an Utrom?)
There are so many figures they can do with this line even if they just stick with TMNT Vol. 1 and Tales Vol. 1 but I hope they do expand it to eventually include characters/designs from Vol. 4 (I'd love the TMNT in their 30s, Leo slightly older, Raph in beast form, Mini Don in his robotic suit and Mike in the black suit he wore on one of the most recent covers) and Tales Vol. 2.
This being NECA I'd expect to see the TMNT quite frequently (look at how often Jack pops in the the POTC line, once in every wave!) so I'm guessing wave 3 would be a variant set of TMNT (hopefully the more refined look) and 2 more characters.

Personally, I hope they don't "improve" over the first wave. I already have figures based off the cartoon. Those would happen to be the TMNT for the first Playmates wave back in the '80s.
They can put out fiures of a more refined look later. Right now I want my Vol. 1 #1 TMNT!

Man, I couldn't agree more. A minor tweak here and there, and this figure is perfect. Replicate it 4 times, slap some weapons on their backs, and it's about all a fan could ask for.
Personally, I'm thinking the sixth figure'll be Shredder, simply because that *is* the full cast of the first comic. And while I'd love to see the second wave filled out with a Foot Soldier, April, Casey, Prof. Honeycutt, A Utrom, and a Triceraton, I'm thinking we'll likely see turtles in each wave.

Bases for the TMNT figures, as submitted by NECA. The two uncolored pieces were approved... but then the colored version came in yesterday and was rejected by Pete. His comments: "The yellow sidewalk and blue street color concepts are too cartoony. Given the cool, graphic look of the Turtle figures we feel the bases should be more 'realistic.' Please make another pass at base colors and resubmit." Yeah, baby.

Ball joint hips - If you look closely at leo's left hip (as in from his pov) you can see a ball joint similar to marvel legends figures. Its well hidden which is awesome.
He's got a tail!
Points of articulation:
Upper neck?
Lower neck
Shoulders x2
Bicep swivel x2
Elbow x2
Hip x2
Hip ball swivel x2
Knee x2
Ankle x2
Wrist x2
This puts him at like 18 poa. That's pretty great for a NECA toy. I can't wait for these I'm so excited!

Anyway, in another thread, they posted pics of the Leonardo figure... with RED bandana. Now just the fact that they really are red bandana-ed really makes me drool. Finally, a decent comic line.

Does anyone else find it odd that the knee/elbow pads are brown leather, but the wrist bands and belt is black (cloth, maybe?) ?
Still, that is really sweet!
Can't wait to see the other guys. I wonder if they are going to reuse the same face sculpt for the other turtles. Still, at least we'll probabaly get a Mikey without a goofy face.

The figures will share the same body but have different face sculpts. Murphy's posted Mikey's on his blog.
So glad that painted base got rejected, it looks absolutely gaudy. The sculpt itself is good, though.

1) Mikey Head
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b281/kendamu/NECAMikeHead.jpg
2) Variants and Secondary Characters:
Why no secondary characters included in NECA's first wave release? Here's what NECA had to say: "In an effort to introduce the line early in the year and to be able to ship before Chinese New Year we are going to offer the classic 4 turtles first. We will then refresh the line in Spring with variations on the turtles along with new secondary characters."
and later
Oh - most factories shut down for nearly a month during the period around Chinese New Year. NECA's trying to get their stuff made and shipped before the holiday shutdown.
All from The 5th Turtle (http://the-5th-turtle.blogspot.com/) as always.

Yes he did. But I'm inclined to believe Cornboy if they are the ones actually producing the figures. After all, just because Mirage gave final approval to allow these to go into production, that doesn't mean Neca could refine it even further and resubmit for approval again.

I suggested the same thing on their forums and they had the same response. I wonder if they've been secretly planning it all along. Now maybe they'll do the other toy line I suggested: Cops n Crooks!
PS for those who don't know the four horsemen are a group of toy designer/sculptors. They don't belong to one real company, they've done work for McFarlane, Toybiz (marvel legends), Mattel (DC Superheroes, the entire He-man relaunch line), and NECA (left over Motu figures). If it's really them making these figures, that's a freaking honor. They're definitely the best in the biz (my opinion).
I think I made the comment that the shoulders look like they were taken straight off of DCSH Superman. That makes sense now.

You usually don't hear about the Four Horsemen's involvement in projects until they are either released or made fully public because they do a lot of design work for other companies. So they are usually forced to keep quiet about projects until their client companies are ready to go public. By the way, if you want to get an idea of what kind of pedigree these guys have, they have a complete list of the figures they have worked on posted at their forums. Four Horsemen FOURum (http://www.fourhorsemen.biz/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=725) IF these guys are doing the TMNT line, it gives me even more reason to look forward to the line. They have produced a lot of figures in the past that I liked enough to buy even though I didn't care about the line they came from. It's nice to see they may finally be working with a license I am interested in.

Correct me if I'm wrong here but wouldn't a case contain multiple of the same figure? I mean it's great to see you guys are all amped for these new toys but do you really need 3 or 4 of the same toy?
I ask this simply because when people do stuff like that it makes it very hard for other people to purchase them. Releases like this are usually rather limited.

Buying by the case isn't going to steal figures from the shelves, because the case is ordered and shipped specifically for/to you.
I would consider buying a case simply to make it easy for me to buy a set because I don't know where these are going to be sold and I doubt it'll be anywhere I can easily drive to. I don't need multiples, so I'd sell the extras on eBay.

I really don't get how this works, but there are 14 figures per case - not even a divisible of 4! Whatever. As tempting as it is to keep two of each, I'll probably just end up keeping one of each. If anyone wants in on my case, I'll leave open that option. It looks like they'll be about $16/each, but I'm not promising any certain price until I see exactly how much I pay per piece after tax, etc...

I am not usually one for "collector" based toylines. I much prefer "kids toys" that are in that $5 price range and sold at target/walmart rather than the $15 stuff at diamond/comic shops...
But I will definitely buy these turtles. Way back in time, I took a 1988 reaphael figure and the belt from leonardo (cut off the straps and painted over the "L") to made myself a "mirage style" leonardo...At the time I also gave him a pair of large usagi yojimbo's swords rather than leo's swords...So this mirage style set is something I've always wanted.
I am DEFINITELY looking forward to seeing these availible for purchase online. I assume shopafx and bigbadtoystore will end up getting these in and will be offering them for sale in sets.
Thumbs up from me! I am really hoping to see a shredder figure. Splinter, April, Casey, Utroms...all would be awesome too...but I am all about a classic shredder. A regular human baxter stockman in a labcoat would be cool stuff too...

I noticed a lot of people on the SHH boards were hoping that the variants coming in the second wave would be the turtles with differently colored bandana's, and I thought that was interesting, considering most of here at the drome, would much prefer the variants to be based off other mirage styles of tmnt. It's just a funny comparison to the hardcore comic fans that would obviously be at the drome, and the fans of a lesser extent at the shh boards. Personally, I think we'll be getting the variants based on the comic styles, but come to think of it, if the toy line gets further enough along, I would'nt mind seeing different colored bandana turtles at all.

If they go with the colored bandana variants I hope they change the skin tones to match the original toy line as well, that would be pretty cool. They could also do black and white variants, but I'm not that fond of the black and white variant figures I've seen, too dull.
I'm pretty curious as to what direction the other figures in this line will take. Hopefully they'll be able to match the quality of the turtles.

For me, it depends... I have no desire to collect any Kid Robot type overpriced blind box designer figures (except the Gary Baseman stuff. I'm a big fan of his work, and I'm disappointed Disney screwed us out of Teacher's Pet toys), and I really can't stand MacFarline's "OMG! TWISTED SCAREY FAIRY TALES WITH EYEBALLS POPPING OUT AND BOOBIES" lines. But when it's something cartoon related, I snap it up as soon as I can. I have most of the Muppets, and those were the only premium line I ever really got into. I did get a few Family Guy figures, mostly on clearance (Quagmire was the only one I paid full price for) . And I wanted to get into MacFarline's Hanna Barbera line, but I only got Hong Kong Phooey...
But no doubt I'll at least try for these ones... I mean, they're too cool not to like. Though I'm running out of room, and may just have to leave them in the package...

At least those make sense and aren't like "Alien Hunters". Personally I don't think color bandanas are necessary, it really isn't hard to just buy a figure and buy some paint and repaint the bandana. I also dislike the idea of black and white figures.
Still I'd much rather they make something like color bandanas which is something people actually want, rather than shell kicking/spinning/barfing turtles, paleo patrol, extreme sports, space turtles, etc...
If all of a sudden they put this Leo figure in orange spandex and give him a bike helmet and call him extreme sports mirage leo I'd be major pissed. Thank goodness that will NEVER happen with NECA! haha

In an attempt to prove jestergoblin's thought (nice name by the way...:P) I sent this pic of Mirage Leo to my girlfriend, who only really knows the TMNT from the shows and movies. She responded to my e-mail thusly:
"That Raph just doesn't look right. He's got Leo's swords and his head looks shrunken. His torso also looks funny. Is that ya thought I'd say?"
If they don't do colored bandanna variants, I'm sure just casual TMNT fans may skip them...although how many casual TMNT fans would know about the NECA figures...

I sent this pic of Mirage Leo to my girlfriend, who only really knows the TMNT from the shows and movies. She responded to my e-mail thusly:
"That Raph just doesn't look right. He's got Leo's swords and his head looks shrunken. His torso also looks funny.
Forget I even posted this. :P
Dude...thats a cool girlfriend...make sure you hang onto her...and get her some damn mirage comics to read!

Well that's what I mean, I'm sure those places will carry them and that will be enough. The Resident Evil line sells well through Hot Topic and Spencers so who knows.

Given it's a comic based line I think Mirage would veto colored bandana variants. Black and white variants are probably more likely.
Personally I hope it's an updated version of the TMNT based on Eastman and Laird's more refined look from Vol. 1 #10-11, 50 and Leo special.
Going off NECA's Pirates of the Caribbean line I'd expect at least 1 or 2 of the TMNT in every wave and pleny of variants (Pirates had Jack Sparrow in every wave). Since it was 2 waves of 6 I'm guessing it was the 4 TMNT and 2 secondary characters in each wave, now it's probably 3 waves with the upcoming waves having 2 TMNT variants and 2 secondary characters each.
I just hope that this line gets a second year. Since it's been confirmed we're getting a variant set of TMNT that means only 4 other characters! Foot Ninja has been confirmed so I'm guessing Shredder, Splinter and probably April (maybe Casey?) are the other 3. There's plenty more characters to do (even just looking at Vol. 1 and Tales Vol. 1) and they can easily do variants of the TMNT based on Mirage artists if they wanted to.

Worried about sales? Stop eating for a couple weeks, buy some extras, and give them as gifts. It's a win-win, you shed those pesky 25lbs that have crept up on you, and you're giving plastic turtle awesomeness to someone you love. Make Gandhi proud.

Here's a thought:
If NECA makes a toy of April, what will she look like? In her debut #2 issue she had hair similar to that of the old toon, but afterward in Mirage she had this curly black hair 80's style hairdo.
How do you guys think April will look like?
