Some of you may have noticed that I have 'given' Mike and the other turtles I minorly play what could be construed as 'psychic' abilities. 'Hey,' you may say, 'ESP isn't part of their mutations, is it??' No, its not. I incorporated that element into the characters I play due to an actual factual basis in real-life ninjutsu. Besides, these 'powers' and such are often alluded to in the comics themselves.
In any event, I thought I would provide a list of quotes from authentic ninjutsu sources detailing the 'psychic' side of the art and therefore the turtles themselves:
- "The art of ninjutsu was developed as a military specialization by the mountain mystics of the Iga and Koga regions of Japan. Totally-developed physical bodies, calm enlightened minds, and free-working spiritual powers which we would call 'psychic' abilities today, were combined in the ninja espionage agent or guerrilla fighter. The art was made up of techniques for the prevention of danger, and included methods of physical combat, intelligence gathering and psychological warfare, and the development of 'occult' powers." (Stephen K. Hayes)
- "From this belief that all things are varying manifestations of the universal Source [...], ninja developed the attitude that there are no totally independent actions or objects in the realm of existence. Seemingly unrelated phenomena can actually be linked together in interaction. As a result, a vast realm of subtle and yet direct control over our surroundings is available to all of us, if only we would acknowledge and accept that control." (Stephen K. Hayes)
- "The ninja of old used his mind to observe, visualize, and affect his surroundings by harmonizing the vibrations of his thoughts with the varying wavelengths of the environmental aspects he wished to alter. Beginning with simple exercises that teach the effectiveness of the method, the ninja was encouraged to develop the power of the mind to clarify his intention and work his will without action." (Stephen K. Hayes)
- "The historical ninja of feudal Japan was famous for their knowledge of the realm that we would call spiritual or occult today. Legitimate abilities practiced were the capability of detecting the threatening presence of others, reading the intentions of people, and visualizing distant places or persons. Advanced students of ninjutsu today still practice specific exercises for the development of the finer senses, and awareness of the seventh plateau of consciousness." (Stephen K. Hayes)
- "This seventh plateau of consciousness is an acknowledgement of the subtle effects we feel from the electromagnetic forcefield influences of others. Some students are more naturally predisposed toward developing the abilities, while others require longer training to make the exercises work for them." (Stephen K. Hayes)
- "The original ninja were mystics, in touch with powers that we would describe as 'psychic' today. Their ability to tune into the scheme of totality and thereby become receptive to subtle input from beyond the usual five senses was strange and terrifying to the common foot soldier." (Stephen K. Hayes)
- "He [Hatsumi] explained that beyond the three levels of physical training lie three more dealing with mental development, and then three final steps for spiritual growth, or what is called 'psychic' ability today. The mental and spiritual levels teach the ninja hwo to heal himself and others through medicine, diet, and balance, and how to fit in with the forces of nature. He learns to study his own mind to gain understanding of others, and ways of sharpening his sensitivity to the finer vibrations in the environment. 'Can you imagine fighting a man who could read your mind?' the master asked. 'If you wanted to hit him with a chair, his foot would already be on top of the chair. If you tried to punch him, he would already be behind you. If you wanted to shoot him, his knife would have already flown across the room into your chest. If you plotted his demise, he simply would not show up. A very difficult adversary, eh?'" (Stephen Hayes, in conversation with Masaaki Hatsumi)
- "The ninja refines his perceptive abilities to a level higher than most humans', and becomes sensitive to input from sources in addition to his five physical senses. The ability to perceive what we call 'premonitions of danger' takes the ninja to the fifth of the nine developmental levels
An attacker, whether man or animal, puts forth his harmful intentons as a sort of vibration or thought impulse. Just as we say that sights, smells, and sounds are things, we can also say that thoughts are things. The ninja refers to these thought impulses that accompany harmful intentions as sakki [the force of the killer]. This sakki is there to be perceived, regardless of whether or not we are sensitive enough to pick it up.
When you are sensitive enough to detect this intention of harmful action, you can fight back by simply not being where the attack will take place." (Masaaki Hatsumi)
That's it for now. More later....
