Check out Murphy's blog entry about "TMNT: Overload"--

http://the-5th-turtle.blogspot.com/

A month or so ago the producers/creative team at 4Kids Productions pitched their second idea (the first - codenamed "Superworld" - having been rejected by Mirage) for the 2008 TMNT cartoon season... TMNT: Overload.

The basic idea behind Overload is that the Turtles, while traveling through time on their return home from the Fast Forward future, briefly get stuck in the past alongside their "kid" selves, and then, thanks to the quantum mechanics of villainous plot shenanigans, all 8 turtles arrive in the year 2008 ("home").

Excerpted from the pitch materials:

"An incredibly powerful digital villain has taken over the World Wide Web, then sets his sights on the real world...

"The turtles take on their greatest (and most annoying) opponents ever... themselves as kids!"

Playmates shot it down. Thought it would be too confusing to CHILDREN.

Go check out the piccie.

Thank you sweet God for letting that idea be shot down ...

I feel like that would have killed the TMNT. Imagine trying to attract an older audience with the Turtles taking care of kid versions of themselves. Ugh. Just ugh. I'm so glad Playmates did the right thing for a change.

I knew Rooish was going to say that.

While I find the concept to be rather cute, I do have to agree. I could stand that for maybe a two-part episode, but for a whole season? Yikes...

I just hope all parties can get on the same page and start real work on a new season soon... time's running out.

Oh dear, am I really negative and predictable? I thought it would be a bad idea if it was done for the good of the TMNT in general. Personally, I would find it cute, just as I find the new movie and Fast Forward and the old cartoon. But I guess I'm too concerned with what the public, in general, thinks of the TMNT, and that's why I cringe when I see "kiddie" aspects: because I worry that, although kids like it, people won't really respect the TMNT as something that adults can enjoy. I don't feel that way because I'm worried about what my friends will think; I'm just worried for the "good of the franchise." But I guess the franchise will always need kids to like it, because there's just not enough adults to sustain the TMNT by themselves, even if it got darker and less kid-friendly.

That being said, I like Fast Forward more than the darker Lost Season. I'm not quite sure why. But anyway, I wasn't trying to say that dark=good and light=bad.

 That poster is gonna give me nightmares. The kid-turtles look so very ugly... with their tennis-ball sized, shinyshiny eyes.

And Mirage was ready to accept it? For once... thank you Playmates for shooting this one down. I don't want to deal with any more time travel, especially when we'd be stuck with the four kid-turtles, who'd probably reach Zach-the-5th-turtle annoyance levels.

I'm not entirely against the idea of revamping with a gimmick, so long as the gimmick's good. No gimmick would also be fine, heck.

I agree, it'd be good for one or two episodes, but whole season, no. I think Playmates logic for shooting it down was lame though. I know most kids are dumb these days, but would they really not be able to tell the difference between adult Leo and kid Leo? Gimme a break.

How hard is it to just make a TMNT cartoon? No time travel, collectable card games, chibi turtles or any other stupid gimmicks. Just a cartoon about the TMNT fighting new and classic villains. Like the first 5 seasons of the 2k3 series.

I think what really depresses me is that Laird and Mirage thought this was a good idea, only to have the toy company tell them otherwise.

Ugh. I have a feeling the show isn't going to be ready by Fall '08 if they haven't even agreed on a concept yet...

people won't really respect the TMNT as something that adults can enjoy.

I agree.... the "Overload" idea would be really fun for a few episodes, and I think there's a huge fan following who like the idea of the TMNT having to deal with children--especially themselves as children. But I'm not sure it could be sustained a whole season. Anyway, what I really wanted to say was that I wish they hadn't totally trounced the idea of drawing on the Archies--there was some good, dark stuff in there in the Dean Clarrain/Chris Allan years, and while it would be difficult to make it match up to the 2k3 universe (Splinter was Hamato Yoshi, Shredder is a human, April's a reporter, blah blah), I think there are a lot of plotlines and characters that would transfer well to animation. Besides that, I would be having fits of unbearable excitement and happiness the whole time. The Archies rock my world.

Good God -- "minor revisions" aside, not only is that a horrible concept on par with Fast Forward, but... Mirage approved of it. How encouraging.

And how utterly foolish of me to hope for one minute that TMNT might be spared the sparkly sticker makeover for its next television incarnation.

Someone break the curse. Please. MN, if you ever make it big in animation, avenge the green team. I will do likewise if my fortunes ever allow it.

I think what really depresses me is that Laird and Mirage thought this was a good idea, only to have the toy company tell them otherwise.

What frustrates fans further is the fact Playmates wanted to bring the show back to the older series and ARCHIE comics, and Laird and 4Kids turned them down because it wasnt what THEY wanted, not neccersarily their top merchandising supporters.

DrSpengler
10-02-2007, 11:10 AM
I noticed that, too.

How could Laird approve of something like "Turtles babysit themselves for a whole season!" and then give the thumbs down to something with nostalgic appeal for the original series and Archie comics?

I know he says he has no bias toward the old stuff, but things like this make me wonder if he's being entirely truthful.

At any rate, c'mon Laird...Mirage, do you even care about the integrity of the TMNT on TV anymore?

ZariusTwo
10-02-2007, 11:35 AM
It may have been approved because the younger Turtles have been heavily focused on in several episodes, and he likely would have "wiped their memories" of their visit as seen in the Lost Season when they first encountered the Ninja Tribunal.

Good for a premiere, not a season. What else is there to learn about the younger Turtles anyway?

Hmmm... Auotattack figures, idiotic "action feature" toys that do one thing and never get played with again, not having the FF line and the Movie line co-exist.... and NOW they decide to make a good idea?

This series would be absolute turtlecrap. Nothing more, nothing less. i can't even believe Mirage accepted it. This makes "Alien Hunters" sound like a great idea.

How hard is it to just make a TMNT cartoon? No time travel, collectable card games, chibi turtles or any other stupid gimmicks. Just a cartoon about the TMNT fighting new and classic villains. Like the first 5 seasons of the 2k3 series.

Why do they insist on NOT doing what they've been doing for 5 years just to make a cheap grab at merchandising? Why not just make new TMNT sculpts, and toys of new villains? that would sell. Only reason they feel they need a "Gimick" is to sell stuff they won't sell.

What frustrates fans further is the fact Playmates wanted to bring the show back to the older series and ARCHIE comics, and Laird and 4Kids turned them down because it wasnt what THEY wanted, not neccersarily their top merchandising supporters.

Think very very hard about that. Would you want an inferior copy of the older series with out the original actors doing the voices, and having a set of others imitate them poorly? I sure as shell wouldn't.

Go check out the piccie

BY TOUTATIS!!! They've gone with stylizing and simplifying them into blocky angular styles again. Now they have hooves?

You know... TMNT has a gimmick. In fact, they have four. It's in their name.

Teenage
Mutant
Ninja
Turtles

That is their essence, is it not? They already have four gimmicks . Why paste time-travel or baby-sitting or alien hunting or paleo-patrol on top of all that?

Rhetorical question. Please do not bombard me with obvious answers.

The thing that is the most concerning is this show won't even HAVE a 2008 season at this rate if none of the companies can agree on anything.

I thought the next season was going to resemble the tone of the new movie, what the hell happened to that?

So we have;

Superworld (card style battles) rejected
Overload (TMNT and their kid selves) rejected
Classic Style (OT and Archie based) rejected

How hard can this be?

Why can't they get whoever they need from Mirage, Playmates and 4Kids together (in a room, online, wherever) for a few hours to just decide what direction they want to take?

I know it's more complicated than that, but a good chat between the 3 parties could at least outline what they all want and don't want rather than waste time coming up with ideas that others just say no to as soon as they hear about them.

And why can't Mirage make a pitch? We've had 2 from 4Kids (and Murphy says they're about to make a 3rd) and 1 from Playmates, surely Mirage can make a pitch about the direction they'd like the show to go!

As others have said why does it need a gimmick? An overall arc for the season yes (all seasons have had this to some extent), but it needn't be a gimmick.

And home is now 2008? Considering they left in 2005 I'd say they missed a few years ;) But I guess that's a good enough excuse for April and Casey to have Shadow when they return (I can dream!)

Overload is called so cuz it would have been an overload of Chibi Turtle cuteness???

Perhaps the kids would think it was the adventures of the adult TMNT and their sons? That's what that poster kinda looks like.

A whole series where the TMNT and their younger selves team up??? Well it kinda worked with Wonder Woman....she teamed up with her younger selves (Wonder Tot and Wonder Girl) alot in the comics.

But the thing with this series....they'd have to explain how/why the older turtles don't remember these adventures they had when they were younger. It would be a rather confusing mess and a bit of a time paradox.

The other concept "Superworld" where the turtles team up with other heroes to fight villians sounds interesting. It could have been a Justice Force series. Sure it's in a game....but...still.

Gonna be interesting what the next concept thought of is.

Wow, Playmates did somethign right! I'm shocked to hell and back.
If I see those Bugs Bunny Looking Chibby turtles any time again soon it will be a cold day in hell!:x
What the living hell is wrong with Mirage that Peter would accept this heap of crap and reject ARCHIE!!! Oh My things are in quite a sorry state.
I'd rather have Fast Forward any day than have my eyes raped by those buck toothed bandits.:dead:
Ok seriously why would it be so hard to do a short season based on that whole idea but instead of the past they get tossed into the old toon world and have to help out the 80's turtles. I mean are they stupid? People would go Ape **** for that.

I wouldn't mind episodes about the Turtles growing up (like what they've been doing) but the ultra cuteness they threw on them? GYAHHH..

I will say, I would like Superworld if they cut out the Card game thing, and put April and Casey back in the spotlight.

Why do they insist on purposely killing off the TMNT franchise???? Who the hell thought that would sell???

The problem here lies with Fast Forward. It never should have had a new look, feel, an entirely new theme song all about it, and it never should have been called Fast Forward to begin with. It should have just been 'season 7' of the regular TMNT show and that's that.

Now their problem is, they just can't go back and call it 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' anymore. Thanks to Fast Forward, they find themselves forced to redrew the style, make a new theme, a new theme song, which is where all this Superworld, Overload and Alien Hunters crap is coming from. The sad truth is... we may never see the Turtles go back to regular 2k3 style again. They're gonna be forced to use some kind of new gimmick or something.

Overload takes them back to a normal timeline... BUT WITH TODDLER VERSIONS OF THEMSELVES!!!

Don't you understand what I mean? The way they painted themselves in a corner with Fast Forward, they see the new TMNT show forced to have some kind of gimmick. Bringing them back to their regular time won't mean the powers-that-be still won't make Turtles into Alien Hunters, Overloaders, Ghostbusters, Tomb Raiders, Poekmon Catchers or whatever the hell new thing they come up with.

Instead of complaing to me or getting all angry.
Take those thoughts and post them in Murphys blog if you haven't yet.
We all know Peter Laird, 4kids, & playmates are watching.
Playmates is coming at them with wanting to do an old toon and archie story line because thats what allot of fans want because we're sending in those slips to them from the big foot toy offer and telling them thats what we want.
If Peter would ever get over hating his past so much maybe he could move on to the future of this series.
Also it has nothing to do with Fast Forward that was an idea that peter laird, 4kids, and playmates all agreed upon so not one person is to blame here if you want to point fingers your going to have a mighty big one. People really tend to forget that that season was planed as the next season after the ninja tribunal season.
It's 4kids wanting to make all of there shows the same, that's whay they wanted to do the entire collector card, capture crap trend thing.

Laird doesn't like the idea of using Archie material, but gives the green light for some ridiculous turtle babysitting series, WTF!
As someone mentioned, what happened to the idea of setting the new series in the movie universe?
That sounds like a perfectly good idea to me!
They could have Raph take up the Nightwatcher persona again, fill in the gaps between TMNT and the next movie, with hints of Shredders resurrection and so on.
The thoughts of what they'll come up with next are a bit unsettling.

I got the answer to that, because Laird signed a contract that said they did.

Yeah they used to just have exclusive license to make TV series toys, now they have the rights to decide how the series goes. So their going to make the series so they can sell toys.

Their not idiots, they know 70% of the toys are bought by us and they know baby turtles figures won't sell for crap.

The toy company funds 1/3 of the show, which is why they get a big say in things.

The central premise of Superworld had the turtles returning from the future and getting trapped (or partially trapped, I forget) in a multi-player game filled with super heroes and villains, hence the "super" of the title.

Agree with the posted sentiments. Fun concept for a season opener or multi-parter, not an entire season (or more). Are we past the point where we can just get a normal TMNT show without some Power Rangers-esque subtitle? Or at least a concept that can last more than one season?

It also looks like the FF streamlined style is here to stay, but that's the least of this show's concerns right now.

How about a series where the turtles all have over exaggerated French accents, wear yarmulkes instead of masks, and fight the forces of darkness with paper bag puppets? We could call it TMNT The Banana Octopus Squadron. YEAH! And then April can be replaced by an Australian Sumo wrestler with a toaster for a head. His name is Mr. Armpitman.

And it can take place inside the mouth of a shark.

Heh, guess I wasn't too negative after all. ;)

As much as I appreciate Playmates shooting down that horrid f**king idea, why does Playmates have to be part of all this? I mean, we've got some cool toys out of the new cartoon and the new movie, but next time Mirage signs some contract, why don't they just do it with 4Kids? Maybe I sound really naïve here, but it would be one fewer company putting its opinion into the TMNT solely for a profit. Why can't just 4Kids (and WB, I suppose) do that? Do we really need toys? (I love the action figures, I just think Playmates sucks. Except in this particular situation, where they overruled a really ridiculous idea. God how I don't want to hear any more grown men doing the voices of little kids.)

Maybe 4Kids and WB would come up with "kiddie" ideas, but at least it wouldn't be a blatant gimmick meant to sell toys. It would just be meant to sell the series.

I don't know what Peter Laird was thinking. I mean, Mirage Volume 4 has its flaws, but at least there were no mini Turtles. Maybe one or two episodes of the "Overload" idea would be fun. But the young Turtles get younger and more annoying every time (I liked them quite a lot more in "Tales of Leo" than in "Fathers and Sons.")

Okay, I don't have a point. I hope they come up with some good ideas. God I miss Eastman.

But I am grateful that this got shot down. I could have stood, possibly even enjoyed, a single episode or even a 2-parter. I'm not against the turtle tots. But kee-rist! A whole season of that would have had my eyeballs glazing over and wishing they had used Drtooth's idea instead.

Let's just keep 2k3 continuity... bring them back home at last and focus on brand new stories with occasional nods to their comic book roots. What is so guldurned difficult about that?

We'll have to wait for the generation of idiots running things now (who by now are probably sick of TMNT and desperately want to kill it off) to die off or retire. Why is it that the turtles lost their irises and pupils as they got older? Did their eyes sink deeper into their skulls causing them to be overshadowed by their bandanas?

The concept itself doesn't bother me, but I have to reiterate what others have said in that I can't see it being the driving force behind an entire season.

I would like to explore the pre-teen turtles some more though. I can just imagine Raph picking on Don and Mike and with Leo being a little tattle-tale.

In defense of Peter Laird (not that he needs me to put in my 2 cents), Mr. M.'s post did say it was approved WITH some changes (that didn't appear in that pitch quote). So it could have probably worked (at least short-term).

What bugs me is NOT the fact that the toy company has so much say, as much as their "reasoning"-- once again they think kids=brain-dead.

Didn't "they" say that the next season was going to similar to the movie? And the movie is very similar to 2k3... so I was hoping for the best.

The only comment that was made along these lines from any sort of in-the-know source was here (http://forums.thetechnodrome.com/showpost.php?p=513244&postcount=16).

From all I hear the retooling will probably make the show more along the lines of the movie.

This was right when FF got canceled, so it obviously didn't happen like this because 4Kids pitched the Superworld series instead.

Overload was bad, could have been decent, probably a stepdown from FF
I really wouldn't want the OT/Archie based thing unless it was a totally different cartoon, but since we already have OT and Archie, just plain continuing the 2k3 series (which has no real ending as of yet) seem like the best way

if they want a story line why don't they go with something that they have already established in the 2k3 continuity instead of pulling something out of their ass?

Why not have the turtles (if they absolutlely have to be stuck some where) get stranded in the battle nexus out skirts and have to go through diffent deminsions to find their way back to their deminsion and encounter some old characters and enemies and some new ones. They can be creative with it if they want.

The thing that's tough about this is that all 3 parties have different goals in mind. 4kids wants ratings....Playmates wants toy sales...while Mirage ultimately just wants something as close as possible to 2k3. I bet this is very frustrating for all parties involved.

As for the overload idea, I love most of the toddler turtles episodes of 2k3, but they're best left at one or two episodes per season.

Whatever they do, I hope they keep continuity.

See, you could easily continue the 2K3 series we know while successfully integrating elements from both the OT and Archie comics. It wouldn't have to be something completely on its own. If you read the comments on Murphy's blog, the person posting as slash has some really good ideas on how it could work while staying true to 2K3.

Geez... I don't think the idea was as bad as everyone is making it sound. But, I agree that gimmicks are for episodes, not entire seasons (so, I edited the sentiment a little... sue me). Compared to 'Superworld' and 'Fast Forward', this latest concept sounds enjoyable. Of course, it's no longer an option, which is fine by me. I might not have found it horrendous, but it certainly wasn't even close to optimal.

As long as the show doesn't become a live-action mockery like 'The Next Mutation' or a "let's explore the powers of imagination" Turtle Babies show like was pitched before they decided on 'Fast Forward', then I'll be relieved. Since there isn't a lot of selection in new American action cartoons these days, they'd have to screw up big (like what I mentioned in the previous sentence) to lose my support.

From the latest explanation of 'Superworld', I see that we were given a very narrow generalization of it before. Was it actually even supposed to be a card-game, or was that just an outsider's understanding of it?

As I said on Murphy's blog integrating the Archie comics into a show wouldn't be that hard. Slash has the right ideas. I'd LOVE to see Ninjara and the Mutanimals on screen.

If they're so keen on time travel well there's always the Future Turtles (not the FF ones but the Archie ones). Don's got his Time Slip Generator Stargate thingy. There's lots of possibilities with that.

Somehow I feel we've had this discussion before... :) It was like, what if you had a TMNT series that was like an animated version of tales -- with different authors and animation studios for various episodes, similar to having the freelance writers/artists coming to work on Tales of the TMNT comic. It would be completely unorthodox, but then, to me anyways, it would seem more fitting to TMNT.

I know, not gonna happen unless we entertainment industry undergoes a violent revolution.

Murphy's blog exploded with 48 comments to this story, I really do hope with everyone asking that he does in fact tell Peter Laird to look at the comments there.

When it gets right down to it, how many options does Peter have left now for TMNT on TV? If a return to 2k3 isn't going to happen without some gimmick involved, introducing some Archie characters would do the trick. I can totally understand why he doesn't want the show to become mutant of the week, but a handful of characters would be adequate.

Overload sounds like some crazy fanfic....a lot like every episode of Fast Forward (which I rather liked for its quirkiness). I definitely wouldn't mind a mini OAV of it. *cough* ...but then, I have the toddler turtles figures standing right in front of me, ... They are adorable! XD

Superworld was a card battle based series?! WHY?! That's the most horrible thing I've every heard of! Chibi turtles doesn't even compare to the horror of Yu-gi-Turtles...imo The Fast Forward episode that was a Pokémon parody was painful enough.

What happened to what I heard about them branching off from the new movie and its visual style? That could possibly be refreshing.

Whatever they do, I hope they do keep true to explaining how they get home from the future. I'd also love see more about the Dark Turtles and how they end up. (I'm probably dreaming on this) I rather liked them.

As much as I adore the Toddler Turtles and the episodes/comics they are in...

A whole season of them is NOT a good idea.

A two-part episode like that is fine.

Some flashback episodes featuring them is great.

The Overload concept is a BAD idea.

Why oh why can't they continue like they did with the first 5 seasons, weaving in Mirage Comics and brand new elements so well? Adding in Archie elements would have worked fantastically too.

I dunno what is worse, if the card gimmick one or the Overload one.

If they make a two-part episode concluding the series after the Turtles return to regular time, I'll be content with that. Hey, I would have been satisfied with ending things at the end of the fifth season.

Overall, I am glad it was shot down.

And how hard could it be to adapt more Mirage and Tales Vol. 2 issues?

I agree that FF was definately improving. When first introduced, I thought they completeiy wasted the potential of the Dark Turtles, but they gradually became better characters right as the show got the axe. I'd kind of like to see more of them, just, you know, written better.

Though to be honest, I only really wanted S2 to go ahead so I could get that Space Usagi episode, so perhaps I'm not the best judge.

My thoughts exactly. This is how they could revive the series, even though new comers might be a bit confused, but maybe not if they have one shot episodes (or maybe a two parter here and there).

And as much as some of us complained about it, I think we'd rather have FF continue than some of the new stuff they're shovelling. Personally, I think the Banana Octopus Squadron could work ;) lol.

Yeah, I thought Fast Forward was getting a lot better, too. I even thought 2k3 started out kind of badly (except in animation) and then got waaaaay better. It's a shame; if they have to keep the show really light-hearted and sci-fi, I'd rather they keep it in Fast Forward instead of pulling out another random idea. Also, I hate when the Turtles get kid sidekicks, whether it's Cody or Zack or kid versions of themselves. Please ... no more children. Unless it's a cute flashback. Although Angel wasn't that bad, especially in "Prodigal Son."

I hope she wasn't too young in that episode because she was kinda hot ...

Since we're on the topic of failed TMNT cartoon pitches, I'll share with you what little I can with regards to Playmates Toys' recent pitch for the 2008 toon season, working title "Ultimate TMNT."

Ultimate was an attempt "to bring the TV and CGI movie universes together" (pitch materials quote), albeit with a creative focus on and tweaking of the original cartoon series, upping the humor level of the current series while still trying to walk the grungy streets of the original comic and recent movie.

Many past characters from various universes make their appearance. Most notable amongst the TMNT's regular allies are Usagi Yojimbo (shown here, and © Stan Sakai), Tattoo, Mondo Gecko and Hamato Yoshi/Splinter (toon origin version). Amongst the villains are Shredder (natch), Ruin (formerly Mutagen Man), Rat King, Slash and, um, Wingnut and Screwloose.

"For the first time ever... the turtles will be drawn and written as real teenagers. Their personalities and relationships will still be developing, their abilities and roles will still be growing and their training will be more intense than ever."

And so it goes... into the dustbin of TMNT business history.

Wow. And this.... was scrapped. Unbelievable.

They wanted to bring Shredder back (again) and have old toon Splinter there? Uh, unless they were doing some parallel dimension storyline, how would they explain a Hamato Yoshi Splinter and the current 2k3 Splinter together, especially since Hamato Yoshi was killed in the current cartoon?

And why Mutagen Man? He was only in 1 episode of the old show and is far from a popular character. Random.

There are several ways of looking at this. If Laird wanted to, he could have accepted Playmates ideas, but "tweeked" it so Splinter wouldnt be Hamato, and then move forward from there, because everything else would have worked. New Shredder? Bring it on, we've had two other Shredders since Ch'rell was exiled. Rat King? He's still around in the current series

The fact he wont edit the idea and even attempt a version that applies to what he wants the show to be proves he doesnt want to acknowledge the success and legacy of the ARCHIE title. And it's sickening. THIS is why "Forever War" has been delayed by years, and now, when the franchise has characters that Playmates KNOW can bring in the kind of success the toyline of the original series had, he wont' do it because he didnt have s*it to do with the success of the Mutanimals, or anything else spun out of that company.

Why the old toon splinter idea? And I agree drtooth, the animation these days sucks compared to our youth. people rely on too much computer animation (some is alright, but not the whole show) instead of pure talent. oh well...

EDIT: maybe 4kids should sell their 1/3 (on the assumption that PM has 1/3, Mirage has a 1/3 and 4kids has a 1/3) to Kevin Eastman, then they can revamp the TMNT and every station will want it :D

DrSpengler
10-03-2007, 02:54 PM
There were things about the Playmates pitch I didn't like. The "true teenagers" bit being one of them, the other being an entire continuity reboot coupled with Splinter having the Old Toon origin. I think if Laird wanted he could have tweeked enough of their ideas to fit the Archie/Old Toon characters into the existing 2k3 universe without much pain.

I mean, at the end of the day, Playmates really only wants to do that so they can sell the toys of those characters. If it's a new universe or part of a continuous one, I don't think they'd care so much.

I mean, we've aleady got Leatherhead (who turned good in Archie), the Rat King (as enigmatic as ever) and the Turtlebot who could be rebuilt as a Metalhead-like character (though not called Metalhead since the Mirage Metalhead has already been introduced in the 2k3 universe). Heck, one of the Dark Turtles, preferrably Dark Leo, could take on the identity of Slash if the other three wound up dead or something. I'd buy that for a dollar.

There are lots of clever and interesting ways to reinroduce and reinvision those characters. If Laird would just get off his "not my vision" high horse for five seconds maybe he'd realize that.

I can see in like 5 years TMNT (1990) the special edition will come out where Shredder attacks Leonardo first, the characters are replaced by floating, inconsistant with the rest of the film CGI, and then the O'neil farm would have been reinvisioned as a big bustling farm the way he always wanted (for a week).

Well, Lucas has at least gotten better about it.

He released the unaltered trilogy on DVD and he has absolutely no problem with expanded universe fiction and merchandise. I mean, I was at K-Mart the other day and saw toys of Mara Jade and other characters he had no hand in creating.

And even the prequel trilogy had stuff taken from Expanded Universe fiction, like vehicles and aliens from the freakin Droids cartoon. Hell, Lucas even let a toy of Holiday Special Boba Fett get released, and he is not shy about expressing his eternal loathing for the Holiday Special.

Meanwhile Laird will let nothing see the light of day unless it's part of "his vision" and can only be coaxt into doing so by being convinced he thought it up in the first place (essentially, stealing other people's ideas).

When it comes to Lucas and Laird, I think Lucas is MUCH more diplomatic.

Yes, slash has made many a funny and well informed post. I especially loved the part about the martial arts artist named East-Man whom was mutated after being bitten by a radioactive "East."

Also, isn't it interesting that the Playmates pitch so closely mirrors some of the ideas that have been bouncing around here as well as Murphy's blog the past couple weeks or so? It's as if they're spying on us...good. ;)

At this stage in the game...I could care less what they did with the TMNT as a cartoon on tv.

To me, the 2003 series ended with Season 5 (The Lost Season).

Fast Forward was a seperate show, and was promoted as such, so I can easily ignore it and anything like it that rears its ugly head in the near future.

I honestly hope they don't revisit the 2003 series, because I don't think they could do it justice anymore.

Let the 2007 movie-verse (assuming we get sequels) handle the 2003 toon vibe...that movie was based heavily upon it anyway.

If they decided to start from scratch and do a whole new cartoon, then I wouldn't mind seeing an Archie based toon (I loved the Archie comic...yet am dissatisfied with the cartoon it was based off of...don't ask me why.)

I would also love to see a toon more along the lines of the Mirage comics...something that could air on Adult Swim or something...

But if they're gonna keep doing these lame spin-offs to the 2003 series...then I ain't tuning in and wasting my time.

- I DO want a continuation of 2k3. Send them back to the present time. Make stories based on Tales Volume 2, as well as other feasible remaining Mirage stories. Feel free to add Archie based stories also- but keep Splinter's origins intact.

To me, it seems like an obvious idea, or at least an intuitive one, to just return the Turtles to their regular time and continue the 2k3 cartoon as if FF had been just an extra-long time travel arc. Like a special set of episodes- maybe closest to the "European Vacation" episodes of the OT. That they should just return to the regular adventures of the Turtles with the previous animation style and just put in a blend of Mirage comics stories (Tales volume 2 and the sort) plus some original ones. It worked out GREAT for the first 5 seasons. You could even consider FF to be like that- after all they brought in the Wild West COW Boys from two Tales Volume 2 stories, as well as the Planet Racers. So why oh why do they want to reinvent the wheel? Concentrate of creating and incorporating good stories like you did for these past 6 seasons- do not try to put in a new gimmick that will NOT work. If 2k3 has been working so well, why are you throwing in a stupid gimmick?

Roseangelo

The COW Boys do not originate in Tales Vol. 2, nor does Planet Racers originate in anything TMNT-related.

As much as I would like for it to happen, too, returning to what was before Fast Forward just isn't going to happen. The reason they made that change in the first place is because ratings were slipping. Fast Forward was an obviously bad fix to that, but it's not enough reason to go back to what was. And if you've read Murphy's additional comments to his posts, you'll realize that it's just not going to happen. The next season has to be something new, we just have to hope that it's not crappy.

What's with the random praise of the Ultimate TMNT pitch? That was pure, unimaginative tripe for the nostalgics. If any of the rejected pitches sickened me, that would be it. Superworld would bore me to tears (especially if it was in fact intended to have the card game gimmick). Toddler Turtle Team-up would have worked for about 4 eps. Ultimate TMNT... I thought we wanted the show to have dignity. T^hat idea needed the most development of the three. I mean, seriously. Mutagen Man?? WTF?! Overgrown Garbage Pail Kid = huge blow to already crippled dignity. Wingnut, Screwloose and Mondo Gecko were only ever cool in the Archieverse. And, there's absolutely no reasonable reason to resurrect the human Splinter origin. That was just plain stupid.

I'll repeat what I said at Murphy's blog:

The Playmates pitch isn't perfect. I also wouldn't go back to Splinter being Hamato Yoshi. And I don't think it intends to be a show that completely forgets and ignores everything that has happened in the last five years.

But you know what it is that NONE of these other pitches are? It's a show about Ninja Turtles. Fast Forward and what would have been Superworld and Overload are all ideas that just happen to feature Ninja Turtles - You could easily do the same exact show with generic characters replacing the Ts.

I think you can easily do something along the lines of Ultimate TMNT that continues on and builds on the existing world of the 4Kids series.

I can understand gimmick-driven 4Kids forgetting that this is supposed to actually be about Ninja Turtles, but I can't even comprehend why Mirage is forgetting this. I give Playmates a lot of credit for pitching what they did, because they probably did so knowing there was little to no chance of it getting approved.

In as much as I hated He-Man in the '80s, it was exactly the opposite. I originally intended to use that as a reference in my previous post. The big difference between He-Man 2002 and Ultimate TMNT would be updating the characters. While it's only 'as far as we know' that the proposed idea was this shallow (only Mutagen Man getting a makeover), it's also only 'as far as we know' that Overload was a card game and not just like a card game.
The original TMNT, regardless of what we think, know, or otherwise, is the definitive version to the mainstream public and would lead to a much wider toyline and much more profitable audience ratings

Even if there where characters you personally did not like from the past in the new show who's to say he and the staff won't take them and make the character into something you enjoy.
I remember a character by the name of Hun you may have heard of him I absolutly hated the guy when I first saw his mug on tv and I found it funny Peter felt the same way about a character on his own show.

I like the main idea of Ultimate if and only if it did reach more into the, as Gobo coined it and I'm gonna use it, "Archieverse." The Archie comic were a wonderful blend of old toon aspects with the Mirage universe. You all know how I feel about the Archie comics, heck it's the second biggest TMNT influence in my being a fan (maybe even tied for first...heck I was still reading Archie books when I thought the old toon was off the air between seasons 6 and 7). I like the idea of integrating the Archie comics into the mix. I think the stories would work well. Heck they are very sci-fi, with all the time slipping, although there is a lot of eastern mysticism in it too. Could some one convince Laird that Archie comics were his idea so we could end the Archieverse embargo...

Ultimate was an underdeveloped idea as suggested by the "um" in the pitch material quote. Literally fresh out of Playmates' collective ass, I'd imagine.

So, seriously. By not slightly tweaking that proposal they can't make anyone happy? Get rid of some of the mutants, no Krang, no Hamato Yoshi Splinter... throw in stuff from the movie, it could be done. Redesign the characters ever so slightly, and you could make new Turtle figures and kids will still get them.

I know I said I don't care, but there has to be a proposal that's only a little gimmicky to sell toys, while keeping fans and current viewers happy.

I honestly don't know what to say to all this (partly because so many have said it what I'm thinking already) but this whole thing just seems nuts.

I'd love to see a contination of 2k3 like Scandia said, but if that's not possible something closer to the new movie or working in the Archieverse would have been great too (minus a change to Splinter's origins). Kudos to Playmates for at least trying.

At this point, I'm wondering if the new show is salvagable at all. Murphy is right, to continue at all the concept needs to focus on the characters and not some stupid gimick. At this rate, we probably won't see the new concept on the air til 2009, and if it sucks we'll only wish the show had been put out of its misery long ago.

While FF can be fun sometimes, I think 2k3 may have died with the lost season. Just give me my DVDs of it aleady so we can move on and get another good TMNT TV reboot in 5-10 years. Maybe Mirage should just focus on the comics and movies instead for now.

Whatever happens, I hope 2009 (the 25th anniversary) is a major re-think year for the franchise and gets back to basics.

Even if production isn't started yet the new season could start in November instead of September, but there will definitely be something which is why all these pitches are trying to get things finalized.

4kids is lucky they have Season 5 to air which bridges the gap until the fall but this show can't survive on reruns for an entire year which is why we're obviously going to get a new season in Fall of '08.

I kinda disagree. The ending of the Ninja Tribunal season did tie up all loose ends. It works well as a series finale- but also as a season finale. I don't see how you can call that a definitive ending. It tied up some loose ends, but there were still far too many questions left unanswered. Plus, according to FF, Bishop doesn't become a good guy till 50 years later. While he helped the TMNT, he was hardly going to be their best buddies for life. Same deal with Hun. Heck, I found Hun extremely underused in the 4th season. The man's starting to build his own criminal empire, and I'd like to see him clash with Karai and the turtles some more.

Marketed towards girls? Wow, we're making progress. Seven years ago, they totally slashed Cardcaptor Sakura in order to make something marketable to BOYS. Complete and total failure. Not to mention they trashed one of my favorite anime characters ever.

I do like the Toddler Turtles a lot. But I LOVED the OT and the movies back in the day. And I like all TMNT incarnations that I have seen/read. Granted, I am not the girliest girl in the block- but it's not like I watch football or am a total tomboy otherwise. I don't see how you can call that a definitive ending

If Deep Space Nine proved anything, if JLU proved anything it's that nothing is ever properly resolved for the sake of maintaining a universe's realism and ever-expanding life beyond a screen prescense. Buffy's last season? That sure as hell wasnt closure either, it was the next stage of Buffy's life, the live-action series only ended to be fair to Geller, Buffy's story wasnt going to ended with her.

You cant deny TLS wasnt a definitive ending, The original Shredder was defeated, Karai found peace, and the Foot would no longer trouble the Turtles. TLS was to the series what City At War was to the original MIRAGE run. It began the next stage.

I found Hun extremely underused in the 4th season.

Was it because of his VA? I noticed he sounded very differently so maybe that was part of it?

TLS had a definitive ending to me because the Foot was no longer a threat. The Foot had such a central part of the 2k3 universe, now they have kinda done their thing. I agree with FF coming after TLS, but that was almost a whole other universe.

Yes, go back to 2K3. We still have Bishop, Baxter, Hun, and the Big Mob Boss for villians. And why can't Karai go back evil?

That would work, but it'd be a lot like the first half of season two meets the last half of season four. Maybe I'm alone in that thought though. My vote is still for Ultimate. It would have been a good bridging point for Archie, which some of us would like to see how well that goes in the new cartoon.

Other than the old toon Splinter concept. I think it would have been interesting, at least the best of the three so far lol.

As grumpy as Spit is today, I'm going to have to agree with him on the CaW one. How the heck do you get Exodus as ANYTHING like CaW? Exodus has Saki as an Utrom, Bishop, spaceships, turtles getting the crap beat out of them, Utrom judicial branch, a mega super Shredder exosuit. CaW has robots, introduction of Karai, Foot Elite as main players, Splinter and Rat King, Don leaving at the end for Massachusetts, Casey getting married, and then April adopting the orphan that Casey had married the mom of. I'm confused, where do you see the similarities there?

Scandia
10-09-2007, 03:51 PM
I am not drawing parallels between the plots.

I am stating that CaW in the comics concluded a major arc like Exodus concluded another one in the TV series. And that as the Ninja Tribunal season was the end of the regular 2k3 toon before it went on to the next stage in Fast Forward, just as Volume 2 was the end of the regular main story before it moved on to the next phase that is Volume 4- where the Turtles and other non- humans walk around in broad daylights.

Plots have no similarities with each other.

I have to bring up Karai because I don't think there was a big resolution with her. Yes, she found peace, but I don't think she really settled things with the Turtles. She never told them that there was a truce between her and them. This means that she could still be evil to an extent. Plus, as others have said, we do have Baxter, Bishop, The Rat King, and other villains we've seen little of. This means that 2K3 could be continued from Ninja Tribunal. I always thought FF was just a separate series until I saw "The Journal." However, even that screwed us over since we didn't see all of the Tribunal series on TV.

So, what's my point? My point is that 2K3 can continue. However, if you guys think Archie would be good too, I'm for it, though I've never read the comic books at all.

No one is denying that 2K3 could continue on its beaten path. It's just unlikely to happen. Since the ratings were slipping towards the end of it, 4Kids will insist on remodeling the series. That's why it isn't an option.

Totally agreed.

But I'm gonna say something more since I'm tired of people praising something that, to me, was hardly a gem in the history of the 2k3 series.

I have seen the entire Lost Season through several times in hopes that it would feel less like a cop-out than it did on my initial viewing, but that's just what it is: a cop-out for many seasons of character development with sudden resolutions of old conflicts and the involvement of new characters who incited neither my fascination nor my sympathy. Just because it was violent or "hardcore" didn't make it great. The Ninja Tribunal arc was essentially a last-minute battle-to-end-all-battles formula applied to a series that would probably never resurface again in its untainted form. It is one of the most overrated segments of TMNT 2K3, in my opinion. Even Fast Forward with its ridiculous flashing colors, annoying child sidekicks and slogans and terrible setting was more fulfilling than the Ninja Tribunal arc.

Sorry, it's just that I'm seeing nothing but praise and criticism of those who dare think otherwise and I'm tired of keeping my mouth shut. The Lost Season was not the ingenious lost "gem" it is puffed up to be.

You can bet your ass if TLS banks in some huge ratings they will go back to the 2K3 style and all. And it just might cause it has animey crap in it and kids now of days love that crap. You know the more I think about it the more I think TLS was made for a toyline Playmates never got to do...

"Kay. True. But, for the sake of argument, that's a last resort... and a mighty big 'if'. 4Kids' track record suggests that they'll make some other bonehead move during their airing of TLS that will ruin what could have been an otherwise perfect run. With a year before season 7, only 3 unaired eps of >> left and 12 of TLS, there are too many opportunities for 4Kids to not mess things up.

Oh oh then we can have TMNT: Slow motion! Each episode is only like a third or a fourth of a real episode, and they all move like the Matrix stuff, in really slow motion, even conversations. How about this. TMNT: Sliders. In an effort to return to their time, they somehow become derailed from the timeline. They spend an entire season hopping from one reality to another, ranging from Archie, OT, Mirage, Overload, Superworld, SaiNW, Superturtles, Shredderville, Dimension X, etc., in an effort to return to the 2k3 reality. This way, everyone's happy but at the same time, no one's happy since it's such a god-awful idea.

True, but that was only one episode. I was just thinking maybe they could do something where Usagi and his friends are in real trouble, having to constantly face a certain, or maybe numerous foes (they never did take care of Lord Hebi once and for all), he summons the turtles for help, and they could stay maybe as long as half a season; it'd be a difference from the usual NY setting and can still be just as exciting. Maybe they could use that bit Stan Sakai did which included the turtles as an inspiration, change it a little, and expand on it; it'd have a comic touch and be original.

You know, as ultra obvious as that is, that could be a great solution. Have the TMNT in Usagi's world. That way we get an Usagi cartoon series, while keeping the familiar TMNT brand, so then there will be a built in audience of younger kids who don't fully know Usagi yet.

Seeing SAINW-related events start to happen could be interesting for a season. That would give Donny a chance to shine (and put a lot of pressure on the poor guy, to remember details from an alternate reality he visited probably a year previous at least, by that time). You could do some interesting stuff with it... bring up some can-we-change-our-own-destiny questions, as well as force Don to make some in-series acknowledgement about that experience. Find a way to give Raph a prominent role (as he could use some more solo screentime) and I'd watch it, no question.

If I were watching a season with that storyline and Don were captured/went missing for any reason, I'd freak out. It has a lot of dramatic potential... you'd just have to, y'know, not blow it by doing something stupid. Which I can't say 4Kids is too reliable on.

Me as well. It will be a very dramatic jump from "Fast Forward", but I would really dig into it. I guess 4Kids needs to ask itself this: should they try make things that are appealing to kids, or just for kids? (gah, bad pun...). Kids like dark and edgy. I've seen kids in Spiderman 3. They loved every minute of it. The turtles are no different. Why make a kiddy plotline when they were loving the current dark plotline so much? The kids were happy until 4Kids tried to milk the show for everything it was worth... *sighs*

I learned in my Humanities class that little kids love the gory and morbid stuff. The same stuff that adults try to shield them from. In elementary school media centers, kids are always checking out the books about spiders, sharks, and snakes. In fairy tales, kids love the gruesome stuff. I can't recall who exactly said this, but some one speculated that the likely hood of the show going back to 2k3 tone was not going to happen because it didn't do well in the ratings. Well I was wondering on how 4kids could make that call when they didn't even show season five to the public? It was still in the same tone as the rest of the other seasons but with a new direction and feel with the turtles getting arguably more anime-ish feel to it. That in it self was something of a gimmick and I think it could have pulled in good ratings and appealed to the kiddies and shown that the 2k3 style could still pull in a decent audinace. Maybe if they had let the fifth tribunal season show when it was supposed to it could have boosted up the waning ratings the show seemed to be suffering from in season four (which I don't get since season four was kick ass) instead of jumping the gun and pushing Fast Foward ahead of it's self in attempt to make ratings and sell toys.

Okay your 7 years old, you turn on your TV to watch Ninja Turtles and the screen is very dark. There's a mad man trying to feed people to rats, Leo*The normally nice turtle* is being mean, a monster gets ripped in half with a chaingun, aliens explode everywhere, Mikey gets threatened to be murdered

Honestly now if you can't see why a child wouldn't enjoy season 4 I don't know what to tell you. Yeah for adults and teens it's great but adults and teens don't rake in the ratings for Saturday morning cartoon programs.

Hate to accept it or not kids loved the old toon, loved Fast Forward. When did ratings slip on the old series? When Red Sky started. It's like a reverse of what happened in the past. The show was to mature, the 5th season isn't that good, the only appeal I see to it is the anime aspects of it.

But I can tell you already it's not going to pull in big ratings. Kids don't want to see demons, Ne York being turned into Hell, and a monster threatening to eat babies souls. It's a big story arc, it worked for Poke'mon sure but this is a different subject matter. FF works because their one shot episodes for the most part, sure it's all linked but it's one story contained in an episode. Another big thing is the style, even season 5 is low budget like FF but FF has a better appeal to kids. Season 4 is to dark for kids to get into.

Kids are bright, they want to be happy, season 4 is depressing and so is season 5 people dieing left and right.

Really the condescending tone is a bit much, I don't need things broken down for me as if I where a seven year old. And the comment I made in parenthasis was me stating my opinion on season four from my perspective .

Red Sky was not when ratings started to go down for the old toon, it was going down before then, and Red Sky a revamp that was not well recived because it was an abrupt change from its more comedic roots(although Red Sky has its modest fan base). And I know there are people, your self including I guess, that like FF and are sick of people not liking it, but that doesn't mean that all the little kids in the audinace liked it.

But I can tell you already it's not going to pull in big ratings. Kids don't want to see demons, Ne York being turned into Hell, and a monster threatening to eat babies souls. well, like I said before, we won't know for sure until it shows. But really I'm as sick of this mentality that all kids want a happy bright cartoon as people are that all cartoons should be dark and serious and depressing. And even if some people found season four depressing doesn't mean every one did.

Well about the whole "kids want bright happy cartoons,so that how it should be" thing....I wonder if 4kids knows just how many of us 18-25 year old fans watch TMNT.

If I was head of 4kids,Id feel kinda stuck between a rock and hard place...because I know the TRUE fans are us older crowd, but at the same time...it has to be marketed towards kids...which is half the problem...if that the case with ratings and Fast Forward. The 2k3 series was AWESOME...including the Lost Season.

Anyway in regaurds to the actual topic....I wouldnt mind seeing "TMNT: Overload"....but defintly not as a whole season,a few episodes could be fun though.

Now, now everyone. No need to fight. We all have valid points. I know kids who love TMNT when it was dark and edgy, but Spit have a very valid point about kids just wanting to watch their heroes. Kids attention spans are shorter than ours. I still stand by my point saying that they like their good dose of cartoon violence (especially the boys), but right now TMNT is like a black sheep among the flock. Putting TMNT up against "Fosters" or "My Gym Partner's a Monkey" is like comparing chocolate to candy; both are the same, yet very VERY different. TMNT is darker, while pretty much everything else on TV has a much lighter tone. It's hard to be the black sheep in the cartoon industry. Especially when the target audience is kids.

Kids just want their turtles. 4Kids' target ages are from about 4-12 (I'm putting a very rough guess here). At this age, they don't care about quality of character development, story, or anything. They just want to see their heroes on the screen, cracking a few jokes and kicking alien butt. As much as we all want it not to be true, kids are watching Fast Forward and loving it. There are exceptions where kids (like my neighbors) aren't gobbling up the new take on the show. They know the difference and they are hating it. The fact that I got to show them Ninja Tribunal really did help fuel these feelings. Whenever they want Ninja Turtle shows, they just ask to borrow one of my DVDs for a few days. They want to see things that aren't just fart jokes and idiocy rolled into half an hour of cable TV...

Somebody please stop me. I think I'm rambling again.

I'll admit it. I'm 23 but I hardly ever watch the TMNT on TV. I usually get the DVD's, mainly because I like sleeping in on Sat. But when I am up, I will typically watch the episode if it's on.

Ra, what you said just confirms that there should try to be two different versions of TMNT going on (I know, I know, it'd be too much work on Mirage etc etc). One version, a dark edgy version for us older folks, on like Cartoon Network or something else (I am not saying it has to be CN, just picked a station is all I did). Then the second version, kiddy funny goofballish for the youngins, on Fox or whatever.

I was unaware you could hear my tone over the internet, because if you could you'd hear I wasn't trying to be patronizing at all. Your just used to me being an ass and you view everything I say instantly as me acting like one thusly.

I can understand that but really I'm lightening up and working on being nicer.
I think he missunderstood you if you look over your post there are allot of errors that would make one think you're calling them a 7 year old.

Yeah I just noticed my punctuation is way off. I'm still getting used to typing with my middle finger ever since I cut my index finger I still can't type with my middle finger properly...

Wow, you can pick one thing that annoys you about Pokemon? I can't think of anything about it that DOESN'T annoy me. Seriously though, I'm a writer and I can't read or watch anything ongoing if it doesn't have at least a little character development. I was always critical about that kind of stuff, even as a little kid.

And long live the w00t! I'm so glad to see it still in use.:D

I never liked how Ash had these kick-ass Pokemon... and then gave them away... Or how his goal was to capture all 5000 or so Pokemon, yet every episode he runs across a new one and makes no attempt to capture it. For a Pokemon Master in training... he captures like one new Pokemon every 100 episodes or whenever they make a new game and need to show off the new guys....

True to that, it started out where he got a new on every episode I remember and then it drifted off, luckily I had stopped watching it by then.

Well, Character developement and everything like that can vary from show to show. A lot of successful cartoons don'thave character developement, and work fine. But in the case of a super hero series like this, you [I]want[I] a little character growth.

I think there was a little growth in FF, which quickly became devolution.

I thought how they handled them being able to walk around freely was good. They were scared in the 2nd episode to even be seen in Cody's building and then they got used to the idea and ran with it.

Now that we got confirmation, shouldn't we lock or delete this thread?

Why delete or lock it?

It has various concepts for "almost" new seasons, its always interesting to see concepts that were proposed especially a few years down the line.
