Decided to start a new blog called TMNT Rarities. I have a pretty huge TMNT collection so I figured I'd share some of it with the rest of the fandom.

I know this site has rules about posting certain material, but hear me out. I only intend to post SHORT and RARE comic stories that have not been reprinted in well over a decade. I will NEVER post full issues from mainstream volumes, I will NEVER post currently published material and I will NEVER post a comic that has recently been reprinted (should a short comic on my site be reprinted, I will promptly remove it).

In regards to Cyber Strike!, it was originally given away as a freebie, thus I'm not really depriving Mirage or any other company of revenue.

Anyhow, it's a fun little comic based in the Old Toon universe. Some great Michael Dooney art, too.

Unfortunately, that doesn't make it legal.

Unfortunately, that doesn't make it legal.

Well, it's also illegal to run a lemonade stand and not share a portion of your profits with the government, but that doesn't mean there's anything terribly wrong or destructive about it.

I think that's a lame analogy, but whatever floats your boat.

There are a lot of the regular comic books that are "sold out" and unavailable except on the secondary market. Under your reasoning, it would be ok to scan and distribute these. But I don't think you would. There's no real difference, though.

Do what you want, but IMO this would fall under the banner of something that you can't promote on this site.

I disagree. We are all fans here and no one is looking to gain profit off of this. Lets enjoy the short "promo" comics. Thanks drspengler, keep the good work up.

If I was posting full Vol. 1 issues like Return to New York 1-3 etc then I would totally agree that what I was doing was wrong and detrimental to the TMNT franchise and community.

However, I have no plans to post anything like that. Only the very rare stuff that hasn't seen the light of day in decades and in all likelihood never will. I highly doubt Cyber Strike! or any of those Jim Lee's TMNT pack-in comics will ever be collected for profit by anyone. If by some miracle of fate they ARE, then I will immediately take them down.

I'd say that posting "Cyber Strike!" online for fans to read is more helpful to the community than selling it on eBay for a profit. At least this way fans all across the community can enjoy this little oddity.

Since it was given away for free, I think that it would be more legal and okay to post it than to post something that sold for a certain amount of money once and now is fetching much more.

You can rationalize it all you want, but it's still illegal and against the TOS of this site.

Just because you collect rare comics, doesn't mean the rest of us do. Some of us do not have the monetary means to spend hundreds of dollars on a comic. Why make a big deal out of such a small issue...especially because the op is trying to do nothing but help the community?

I'm all for sharing, and even have my own sharing project in the works. I just don't believe that blatantly advertising your piracy is a very smart way to do so. You need to be smart and under the table about it. You know, like the whirlwind of PMs that got sent out the moment DVD rips of The Lost Season were available online.

Providing scans openly like this is not beneficial in the long run. You leave the door open for someone who is not a member of this site finding the scans, saving them, and then selling them on eBay or who knows what else.

I'll I'm saying is be smart with your efforts.

Well, I just wanted to get these comics out into the community and this seemed like the best way to get it done. I certainly had no malice intended, anyway.

Anyhow, perhaps we should drop the "right or wrong" arguement since that's really not where I wanted this to go and I don't think anybody is going to be changing their mind on the subject no matter how much we discuss it.

So...how 'bout dat Michael Dooney art? Eh? Eh?

Question:

What universe does this comic take place in?

They mention Krang, but the style does not seem to be related to the OT or Archie otherwise.

My guess would be Old Toon, even if the style is a little darker.

It can't be Archie, since that series had a completely different origin for the Cyber Armoe.

So far as I recall, the Cyber Armor never appeared in the Old Toon itself, so there's no contradictions from that continuity.

Edit: Orrrrrr what Putrescent said.

It did, in the episode "Cyber Turtles."

The comic is promoting CBS's Action Zone, which the Red Sky series was part of. So yeah, what Putrescent said.

Lovely! ^_^ I don't suppose the tiny little micro-book series from the cereal will be next, huh? :thyper: All I remember is that it had the Archie-style Wingnut, a giant Mouser and it emphasized Mike saying "great oogley-moogley". Wasn't part of my collection, but I always wanted to read the continuation of it.

I did suspect Red Sky given the designs and the mention of Krang, but was not completely sure.

Just a friendly warning to Dr S that what you're doing is illegal and should the Mirage lawyers ever find out they'll shut you down.

On the other hand some laws are stupid and should be ignored. ;P

I highly doubt anyone is going to get hurt in any way by him posting this comic.

Thanks, doc... Just the cure I needed for my boredom. :D

I think that's Murphy saying na na na I'm telling!;)

DrSpengler

Well, the comic was handed out for free. No money was asked for, no money was given, no money is to be lost by showing a FREE comic to people for FREE...over a decade after it was originally published and will likely never see print again.

But if Mirage's lawyers want to rain fire down upon me I'll remove it from the site. All I had intended was to share a piece of rare Michael Dooney TMNT art with the rest of the fans. I honestly hadn't expected the "Holy crap, you're a CRIMINAL!" response I'm getting.

I'm not saying that the posting of this info on the Drome is illegal, I'm saying the posting of the pages on the blog is illegal. And again it's just a friendly warning to Dr S to perhaps reconsider the postings, or to reconsider being so public about it....

DrSpengler
10-26-2007, 02:23 PM
I appreciate the heads up and I guess I won't be so public about it in the future.

But just to rerereclarify my original statement, I'm only posting the super rare, obscure, usually FREE and never gonna be reprinted stuff, like give-away comics and packin comics from decades ago.

I love the TMNT, as is obvious, and I would never make public any copywritten material that would be detrimental to the franchise's future.

I realize your motivation and your position of, well, innocence. If you're going to post entire issues of copyrighted material you simply run the risk of being accused of copyright infringement.

I'm not ratting on you. ;)

I'm outta here. Take care.

For cryin' out loud...

How the book was distributed DOES NOT MATTER!

The people who made the comic got paid for making that comic and how much they got paid probably had to do with how many copies were being printed and the knowledge that it was going to be given away for free. They do not get paid for you posting it on a website. If you have any respect for those people, keep your comics to yourself.

Additionally (though apparently not obviously), the characters in the comic ARE NOT YOURS and you don't have the right to distribute anything with those characters PERIOD.

The tone was uncalled for, Rose. The crisis has been averted,

Yeah, some additional posts were made during my typing.

The continued argument that it's ok to break the law because of such and such, even after numerous statements that it is illegal, grated on me.

and... did you just say that nobody stands to lose anything but pride?? O_o How was that supposed to help your argument? ^_^

No, my main point was: It's illegal no matter how you try to rationalize it.

Krang

Sorry, DrSpengler, but if Murphy says it's illegal, I'll take his word for it. I have removed the links, and they are not allowed to be posted again until the copyrighted material is removed.

DrSpengler

Roseangelo, if you could, please explain to me why I should be reviled for posting the Cyber Strike minicomic but there's nothing wrong with you posting the entirety of the PBZ #1 reprint (http://www.geocities.com/roseangelo/history/) online?

Did you get permission from Mirage to post it on the internet?

Mr._Mutant_Man
10-26-2007, 04:33 PM
I agree with you Spengler that it really shouldn't be a big deal, considering it probably won't be reprinted and thus no one is going to profit from it again more than likely. But yeah, copyright holders can sometimes get extreme in protecting their material. Are they ever going to decide to jump down the throats of any fansites that use any of their pictures, like a place that shows comic covers? Protecting entire issues of a book is one thing, but something that basically amounts to old promo material?

Hate on me all you like, and go ahead and call me a hypocrite (when you fully know the difference between my page that you linked to and what you're doing) but if you'd paid attention to anything I said yesterday, you'd see I was simply giving you the same advice Murphy did today.

The Internet is practically built on copyright violations. We walk on very fine, blurry lines.

Building a blog around the posting of full scans of complete stories, using your real name no less, is just not very smart. Mirage has been very kind to us as fans and they let us get away with a lot - There's no reason to push the limit with them.

DrSpengler
10-26-2007, 05:56 PM
At the end of the day, you're posting copywritten Mirage property in its entirety online for the public to see without being granted permission by the owners of that property, which leaves you with less than a leg to stand on when it comes to criticizing my site. Sorry. You're no better than I am and breaking the law just as much.

I was hoping that the thread would veer back to discussing the actual comic, but it looks like that's not likely to happen...
