If the TMNT of the old cartoon lived in the 1950's or early 1960's (let's say somewhere between 1945-1965), how would it be? Maybe like this:

*Less modern society (of course)
*Michaelangelo being a 1950's rock and roll (Elvis) fan
*Krang being from Mars instead of Dimension X, travelling by spacecraft to Earth
*Splinter/Hamato Yoshi and Shredder remembering more from World War II
*Burne Thompson calling the TMNT "communists" (People fearing different things in the 1950's called the different "communists")
*Characters like April, Irma, Bebop and Rocksteady wearing 1950's clothes

- No video games. Which means- no arcades.
- No cell phones.
- No video cassette players, much less DVD players. Just vinyl record players and perhaps audio cassette players/recorders.
- TV would be in black and white.
- April would be even more groundbreaking. Conversely, Irma's boy-craziness may have been somewhat more acceptable. Maybe.

Maybe instead of a jump suit, April's trademark clothing style would be a poodle skirt?

But let's see:

-Maybe do a storyline with the toddler turtles where they get transported to Roswell and get mistaken for little green men.
-I guess April would be a lot like how Lois Lane used to be.
-I agree, Krang would probably be from Mars.
-The ooze would have probably caused a lot of giant monsters, like giant ants, that the turtles would have to fight.
-Maybe the turtles would be obsessed with like...the malt shop or something instead of pizzerias.
-Instead of surfer slang, the turtles might want to try acting like greasers. Maybe they'd tell Shredder to "sit on it" like Fonzie (I know Happy Days wasn't until the 70's, but if I were writing a story on the 50's I'd probably use Happy Days references).

This is actually a good idea. It would make for an interesting "elseworlds" story, like the kind DC Comics does.

Other:

*Krang using a flying saucer instead of the Technodrome
*Someone seing the TMNT blimp being afraid of an accident, because it would just be 20 years since the Hindenburg crashed in New Jersey in 1937, and more people having memories of that.
*The Turtle Van having a more old-fashioned design
*April appearing in black and white television
*References to the space race, USSR and the Cold War (even if the Cold war was still on in the 1980's)
*Donatello making less science-fiction-like inventions
*Human Foot soldiers
*The neutrinos feeling more like home on the Earth (Their flying cars are 1950's style)

Maybe it could be some fanfic/RPG based on the 1987 cartoon, where some portal transports the 1980's TMNT to some "parallel universe" where the TMNT are teenagers in a 1950's New York City. It could also have been a new cartoon, where the TMNT just are teenagers in a 1950's New York City.

Somehow I can all see them as blocky and being voiced by Daws Butler or something.

Like Gargoyles, I'd hope. Seriously Gargoyles got it right. Action, humor, in depth stories and character development. TMNT in the style of Gargoyles made by Disney...it's a TMNT cartoon fans dream.

Disney's animation style has become utterly simplified over the years. Yes, they have much stronger series now, but they cancel superb ones.

Irma already looked like she was wearing 50's clothes and maybe she could be an intern (a teenager) to make the boy crazziness OK

Krang would definately originate from Mars if we're talking about a 1950's TMNT, and I wouldnt doubt Shredder being revealed to have ties to being a "red" either. And giant grasshoppers, ants, spiders ect ect would be fairly common too.

Instead of engaging in actual hand to hand combat, the TMNT square of a gainst their opponents in West Side Story style dance offs.

All giant bugs are led by Baxter Stockman, who either becomes a fly himself, or is just a mad scientist with the ability to control bugs.

Yeah, I would imagine a 1950's TMNT episode with Baxter being very Dr. Cyclops-ish.

I also get the feeling Splinter and Shredder would have buck teeth and really racist accents as well. It was the era when we were making fun of the Asians for no apparent reason, after all.

Who needs a reason for making fun of races in general? lol

Drtooth
11-05-2007, 09:46 AM
Eh, it was the fifties, when they needed to stop making fun of blacks at the risk of being percived as racists. I could get on a whole subject of stereotypes in early animation, but I don't wanna.

I think that still goes on DrTooth lol. As for the animation, I personally like the racial stuff hidden within Looney Tunes, but I like Looney Tunes, racist or not lol

You know I've always liked the idea of the turtles taking place in another period in time. like the 50's the 60's, hell even the twenties would be pretty cool!

If this took place in the 50's I think all the turtles including April, would smoke. Since it was considered trendy and sexy back then instead of dirty and bad for your health. In fact I could could see them all sitting around smoking all the time.

Michaelangelo would be a beatnick (is that what they where called?) Raphael would have one of those stero-typical 50's New York accents and would be a complete woman hater. Donatello would be obessessed with neucular warfare, and Leonardo...would be Leonardo no mattter what the time period :ohwell:

April would have one of those short bobbed hair styles that was popular back then. And she would wear alot more feminine clothes like skirts and blouses (not necassarily those poofy poodle skirts).

And of course, some people would belive the TMNT also was from Mars.

Racism in children's cartoons is ALWAYS funny. And most of the racist stuff went on during the war. We wouldnt have won without the Popeye episode "sap the jap" or whatever it was called. And an atomic bomb.

What do you guys think the show would be like if it took place in the late 1800's or early 1900's? That would certainly be cool. What do you think their personalites and interests would be like if they lived in that time period?

TMNT in the 50's?

To compare to Happy Days:

RAPH: Would be more like Fonzie, with his motorcycle abilities.

DON: Richie Cunningham; very studious

LEO: No idea.

MIKEY: Chachi. Great sidekick who played the drums (and later guitar) in the band,

It would be so awesome to see Donatello's expertise put to use in that Industrial-era. It would be that sort of retro-futuristic,"Wild Wild West" sort of tech.

That would sound very cool, set sometimes between 1890-1914 or something. Maybe like this:
*Less modern society (of course)
*Michaelangelo being a fan of country music or other folk music that was popular during that time (and having an old time grammohone)
*Leonardo enjoying culture like litterature and classical music or something
*Donatello being interested in science advance
*Krang being from the Moon or Mars instead of Dimension X, travelling by spacecraft to Earth
*Splinter/Hamato Yoshi and Shredder remembering more from World War II
*April and Irma working for a newspaper
*Human Foot soldiers

*Imagine how the Turtle Van would have look, the car had just existed for some years back then. The blimp would probably not have existed. If set before the 1880's, it would have been not a car but a horse and cart (so the TMNT would have a horse in their sewer lair).
*The http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yellow_Peril was feared in the western world (especially after the 1904-1905 Russo-Japanese War), so Shredder and Splinter would really have been feared for being different
*A more depressing feeling, reflecting that time (things like the Titanic disaster and World War I)
*When jumping the rooftops, the turtles having to avoid lamplighters (I don't know if gas lighting was still used for the New York City street lights back then)

The closest to this is probably the episode "Elementary, My Dear Turtle" with time travel back to 1890's London and the "Turtles in Time" video game Wild West stage, with Leatherhead on the train.

Okay if they lived in the 1800's or early 1900's, where would they live? The sewer system was not all that established, and if it was, it wasn't as big as it is today... so thoughts?

*Maybe the turtle farm in Northampton, Massachusetts (I don't know why it wasn't in the 1987 TMNT cartoon) and going to New York City in the Turtle Van (I know it would have take time)

I like all these ideas, maybe i stead of world domination Shredder would be incenced about the discrimination against asians and try to take over the western world.

if the turtles took place in the late 1800's or early 1900's I could see the turtles living in an old abandoned factery instead of the sewers.

the turtle van would be a '55 VW panel
Don would be the quintessential geek comeplete with pocket protector
Raph would be a Greaser
Leo wouldn't be much different that he is, into the whole Japanese thing
Mike would be inventing a better skate board / scooter
Splinter would be an Elvis fan and watching I love Lucy
the enemy would be commies, aliens from mars, and giant robots splash down and try to be friendly...

Ninja Turtles in the Middle Ages (Knight Turtles?):

The turtles would be burned at the stake for being "devils" and Splinter would kill everyone from the plague. The End.
