Yeah, I hope the new theme song doesn't have lyrics. honestly, if they can't afford to hire great lyricists then they should just stick to instrumentals and focus on the sound itself. Some of you might have heard the piano arrangement I did of the 2k3 theme. It's chord progressions and rhythms are actually pretty nice, but the lyrics made it sound like the theme for a toy commercial.

Seems like the coolest cartoons don't have lyrics in their theme-songs -- Gargoyles, Batman: The Animated Series (and Gotham Knights), Batman Beyond, JLU... Technically, the music itself isn't all that spectacular (JLU) but the use of tasteful instruments (and esp the lack of lyrics and neon-colored sugar-high image sequences) keeps the opening sequence dignified. I hope that 2k8 will learn from this, unlike its two predecessors.

If I were storyboarding the opening sequence, I'd do some kind of montage to play off of the theme of shadows and ninjutsu, hiding and then surprise, invisibility... I'd do something with the bandanas blowing softly, isolated or standing out on a black background. It would look really beautiful, but hardcore and intense. Oh well, guess I'll have to do that two decades from now when I'm directing my own TMNT animated series. :P

I really, really, really, REALLY hope that the new show will have an instrumental theme...but I highly doubt it. Pretty much everything that I see which is related to 4Kids in anyway either has some sort of rap or lyrical theme that makes me want to cry blood (though 2k3 wasn't that bad...but One Piece...god, why?!). We'll just have to wait and see, I guess.

Although I share the majority's enthusiasm for going lyricless, I'd suggest "give 'em hell, give 'em shell, give 'em a story they won't live to tell", but I'll bet Vincent has that phrase copyrighted. :ohwell:

Yeah, that's my suspicion. That they will go back to the Karai Shredder 2k3 theme. Granted, now they have a truce with Karai after the Ninja Tribunal season- but even if Karai is not giving the Turtles trouble anymore, she could still be going under the guise of Shredder.

Yeah, I'm afraid of that's what they'll do. Not that it's a bad theme song for a cartoon...I just think it could be better. :D

I think too, that a theme without lyrics would be the best choice. But somehow they have this urge to introduce the turtles in every theme song...as you have prolly noticed.

I've been very pleased with the audio arrangement (not sure what it's really called in English, but you get the idea, the background music works, different themes suit well the situations and characters etc.) in 2k3, so it seems pretty odd if they can't come up with a better opening theme.

Oh, and my spouse thinks that currently the theme song is too long. But I don't mind long theme songs, if they are well made. I like music. :P

They should use the OT theme song and just tweak it to fit with 2K3 continuity (i.e. Splinter not being Hamato Yoshi, "When the evil Shredder attacks, these turtle boys don't cut her no slack, etc.) They could hire Toei to reimagine the animation. Right? RIGHT?!

I highly doubt they'll do OT stuff. I think they'll modify the 2K3 song and make it fit with what the 2K8 season will have. I never minded the 2K3 themes at all. I would've liked the FF theme better if it hadn't been for that battle cry.

I'm hoping they go for an instrumental theme too!
The OT theme song will never be beaten, so why go a similar route for the new toon?
Something in the style of Batman Animated would be excellent, as the cheesy lyrics and thin guitar just didn't suit the darker tone of the 2k3 series.

I can live with a lame theme, just gimme a good showVery true, but I do enjoy hoping. ;) After all, I live with 2k3 nicely in spite of the lame singing in the theme song (Fled's piano arrangement shows it works nicely as a solo jazzy piece, but is lame when you try to "rock" it up... or something).

That's something the new half-season sets (and several of the later 2k3 DVDs) should be praised for... chapters arranged so you can skip the intro. :) :)

See? Someone's already compiling a list of good cartoon theme songs.

And we already mentioned the DC superhero shows as well as Disney's Gargoyles.. Also Jackie Chan adventures -- didn't think of that one, but there's an idea (music-wise) for a wordless theme with a slight Asian sound to it. (Of course, I think it would be extra cool to do something with fusion Taiko drumming and/or fusion koto and/or Okinawan scales, but again... that's probably too much to hope for. :P )

Jem, The Real Ghostbusters, Gummy Bears, Tale Spin, Chip and Dale and the Rescue Rangers...basically most cartoons between the 80's and 90's had kickass theme songs with lyrics.

How about they have a theme song that is just a song, instead of a song geared toward introducing the show and the characters?

Though I didn't mind the 2K3 song, I think a lovely instrumental would work very well. Foreboding, maybe, kind of dark. At least serious. No rap crap or kiddy stuff. There have been many cartoons and shows with some splendid theme songs, but I'm not sure I trust them to give us one anymore, hah.

I think the FF song is good just in the sense that it fits the series really well. I'd like a Batman TAS style intro though yes. The movie theme was beautiful though I'd love if they used that.

Actually, other than the fact I thought the 2k3 theme was awkward at first, I gotta say, I love it. The best one is the Old Toon version, and even still, the Japanese old toon version was even better.

What I'd like to see is them dub the Japanese 2k3 theme (the first one). But since 4Kids can't manage to do that for the Japanese shows, why a Japanese version of an American theme?

I'm sorry, but that is just so Air Guitar for me. Too bad the rest of the show is Meh at best.

But the problem with American theme songs VS Japanese ones... well, J-pop themes are a million dollar industry. Every show, even flops, has a soundtrack, or at least a single. We're lucky to see a CD compilation release.

I really wish Shuki Levey and Haim Saban would write theme music again... I mean, DIC's old animation theme songs were the Shizz.

You have to keep in mind that this song is a translation. Things get lost in translations, and the flow is definitely gone. Plus, the song is called "Winds of Passion" so I really wasn't expecting anything too... macho in it. The music is still quite good. I say we use the music and come up with our own lyrics for Japanese song.

True, but I certainly was amused by some weird jewels from the translated lyrics...check out my new signature. :lol:

I don't find the japanese opening suitable for the TMNT. It has a desperate or maybe even baneful tone in my ear. It suggets that the series were about some relationship and soap opera stuff rather than an action cartoon.

And the "normal opening" doesn't get my whole appreciation because of it's lack of killer riff or melody (which the japanese opening nearly has). And when the theme song changed, it seemed like the singer had hit his limits with his voice. In the end of that "Count on Raphael to ..." -line there's a sudden flop with compressing or something. It sounds bad and seems very unprofessional. But I love the "I love being a turtle" -part. And I like that the theme is sturctured to actually have that kind of break (bridge, C-part, dunno what I should call it). But for me the theme suggets the show is about some agent-stuff.

But maybe it's just me obsessed with the action-type theme. :D And I certainly like the "normal theme" more than the Japanese theme (and I'm not talking about the lyrics).

Fast Forward...well I don't think I should even go there, but 'cause I'm apparently suffering from insomnia I don't have better things to do than give theme song reviews...well, actually I find it pretty good opening for a nowadays cartoon show, but unfortunately that doesn't stop me from not liking it. The tempo is cheerful and it certainly attracts kids to watch the show. There's so much singing that the instrumental part plays very little in it. When I hear the theme I get the feeling that "hey, there's something coming out of the telly that doesn't require any ability to concentrate". And it's not how I see the TMNT overall.

If I manage to find time and inspiration I'd love to throw my suggestion of ideal theme song, it's the least I can do for being such a nagging b*tch. :lol: But for now I'm unfortunately out of a sound card, so no recordings for a while. :ohwell:

Anyway I wanted to thank you for posting that and spreading the word. I read it and was just blown away. To see childhood characters used in such a mature manner, yet at the same time have them remain true to the characters was very cool. And to be done with such fan-dedication and skill blows the mind.

Although I am curious as to what you meant when you said, "It's everything that's right and wrong about fanfiction for older shows."

Well, you read it, you should know. :)

RR may have a cult fanbase, but it's continuity is scarce. The story is clearly meant to emulate the Chip/Gadget romance that the series barely touched on, Foxglove only appeared once in the series ever (in the final produced episode), but became a popular character to the RR fanbase to the point she became Dale's girlfriend. There's shoot-outs and a 24-style espionauge plot where Chip takes a bullet...I mean really, most "show accurate" fanfiction never go that far, and there's very few fanfictions that stay accurate to the series.

However, "OMAM," DOESNT forget the RR humour or style, and uses it to advance it's more mature plot points so you beleive that it could be an episode the younger demographic dont see, and it's entrenched in continuity.

And let's not get into how many times the writer/artists indulged himself in illustrating nude Chip and "Bald" Gadget moments seperatly....yes they had a reason to exist, but they are also staples of bad fanfiction.

FF was supposed to continue on after Season 5. They had no intentions on changing the style and if you watch the series you can see there's plenty of the cool story elements like the earlier seasons in it. There's plenty of dark stuff and I think it would have been alot like Beyond had they let it.

But 4Kids pushed for the execution to change as DR said and it became more kiddy.
