View Full Version : Censorship in the eyes of a long time fan... 10+years later

This is the angle I'm taking for my argument
So... All my life I been into Turtles... Can't remember how I got into them, or why I liked 'em so much. Obsession took in and I ended up having a **** load of Turtle toys, stuffed animals, videos etc.
Back then, when everything was "new" I didn't care, I was young and enjoyed what I saw.
I'm 18 now. I put Turtles off to the side in the back of my head and explored the regions of Darkwing Duck, Gargoyles and a few other cartoon "favs" (Never last long for anything else)
I'm now into Japanese Anime, where the laws are broken in animation and I'm spoiled.

This part's about censorship
I rented Behind the Shells for the fun of it a few days ago, along with "Secrets of the Ooze". They said that (in the movie) the Turtles were to violent for kids and parnets felt the violence needed to be toned down.... Which now explain the disappearing weapons and lack of 'Tiger Claws' for Shredder in "Ooze" (the dbl. claws that covered over his fist).
What the hell?
I decided to do a 'lil "research" and looked up the Turtles on the net and found the official site, stating the same thing, the Turtles are too violent for young audences so they took away some fighitng and put in that after show on how to take care of the envirnemnt and stuff.
I asked my mom today if she ever thought the Turtles were to violent. She didn't think so.
So now I wonder what was ever so violent about the Turtles? The weapons? please, they were hardley used and if so against robotic foot soliders and non-living things. Language? first movie said Damn/ Damn it a few times, maybe **** or hell. Other then that bad puns, one liners, and 'surfer talk'.

Did anoyone realese that the Turtles started out as an underground comic fav that was aimed at teens/adults and the story was much heavier then a cartoon could handle? There was even blood shed in the comic books. What else is there to expect from and underground comic fav.

Time has passed much since then... These are just my rants after enojying the Turtles for so long and now my mind has matured that I know realize what was going on back then.
It's sad though... The first live action Turte movie had weapon usage but the battles wern't that great.... Second movie had better cherography and the fighters were really good, but no weapons really...

Sorry about the space I took up... It's late and I felt like ranting about cenorship... a terrible thing that takes away from stuff being better (Look at other shows, like any anime on TV; i.e. Dragonball)

Good night

Maybe parents don't like TMNT because a kid could pick up a screwdriver and pretend it's a sai and accidently stab his little brother in the eye. I guess it was censored because of the weapons. I know a lot of that anime junk is violent, but the characters on that usually have giant robots or shoot crap from their hands, something no 5 year old could ever achieve.

Well it was the early 90's. When paents took their children to see the TMNT movie, they were waiting for something goofy like the cartoon, not something darker like the comics. And as a result, the TMNT 2 became what it is... Too bad. But it has been over 10 years, things are diffren't now than they were back then. I don't belive that it would happen to the TMNT again.
