View Full Version : Mikey in the new series

I hate Mike in this new series...he is the worst Turtle by far. His jokes are out dated and un-necessary. I wish he would be more like the turtles...but joke sometimes...just not all the time...and not jokes like the splinter "walk this way" joke. I'm glad Don and Raph feel the same way :goofygri:

Well thats How the Mike will be from now on, I think he is funny. It seems that he is the youngest of Brothers in the New cartoon.

Actually, I thought it was pretty funny. Mike is, by nature, pretty corny. And I love the part where Raph shoved him into the whole before he could finish saying 'Cowabunga'. :D

I thought he was good. He reminded me of the mikey from the old cartoon series.

Hey, I like Mikey. He's cool. Don't go bashing Mikey. His jokes are no more outdated than the jokes he made in the old cartoon!
I mean, I got the jokes. Am I outdated? Jeez, I must be older than I think I am.

Mike was funny. End of subject. :P
My only problem was that they compromised his character for the new show... he shoulda been more like his Mirage incarnation. Oh well.

EEEeee! I LOVED mikey! He was so funny, and the part where he was getting sidetracked by the fly was GREAT, Especially when he caught it, and looked up at Splinter with that "oh shzit" look on his face!
BUt yes, I agree, the relationship between Raph and Mike was Wonderful...the "whad he say, whad he Say! Did he mention Me???" joke was GREAT, and I DIED on the cowabunga joke...

I like Mike how he is, hes funny. If Mike was like all the other turtles i'd be boring, they all need different personalities. I also like the relationship between Mike and Raph, its one of my favorite parts in the show.
Karpo_007
02-11-2003, 04:50 PM
And that they have...
Plus, it is only the first episode. There promises to be a bit of character development in the show. I think Mike's a riot, and definitely not stupid. He just likes having fun, even when he's "working". I'm sure we'll see more sides to the guys' personalities as the show continues.
I, too, love the Mikey-Raph interaction. They play so well off each other.
Shadow

Mike is great. Silly/Corny enough to remind us of the OLD mike...Smooth enough to still be Mega Cool.
I am mixed on the raph-mike interaction. Raph is my boy. Hands down...and there is major sex appeal in the "tough one" but here he almost seems too mean. I'm sure raph will show his soft side eventually.
(prob eppisode three)
But as far as mike goes... corny and old jokes...maybe...but he's mike and he can pull them off PERIOD. :D

I found mike to be a little too childish. Sure, each turtle needs their own character, but I feel Mike is too childish and comes off as more of a moron than anything else.
A few people stated that he was still cool, I don't believe this is true. In the old series, Mike was without a doubt the coolest of the bunch. But now he seems to have lost that and, like i mentioned above, is moronic.
An example...
When they were on the shellcell (what happened to the turtlecom? :-? ) talking to splinter, Mike charged in and asked if splinter mentioned him... A little funny, but shows his sillyness.
Thats not to say I hate him, some of the jokes Mike starred in were great (the walk this way joke)... But he isnt my favourite character, and i do prefer the old mike.
Raph is my personal favourite of the new series, but unlike shadow, my like for him isnt a lust :-p

let me get this straight.... you think the Michelangelo of the old animated series was 'cooler'??? Mr. 'Say something idiotic about pizza every five second'?? And you think THIS Mike comes off as childish??
RIGGGHHHHHHHTTTTT.......
I'll admit, this Mike ain't on par with the Mirge Mike, but he certainly beats all the other incarnations of Michelangelo I have seen... excluding possibly the later Archie series.
Shadow
02-12-2003, 12:02 PM
I think mike is the most real of the group. He's free and comfortable enough to make jokes like "did he mention me??"
The only thing that was good about Mikey talking about pizza all the time was that it gave me ideas for pizza toppings... (I did try marshmellow and ice cream...not too bad. LOL)
Here this time around, Mikey is a little more mature...but not. Its kinda like a teacher I had in highschool. He was super mature enough to talk about great expectations' and the impact of the themes...but cool enough to dress up has miss havasham and act out scenes with her in it.
Mikey is a good mixture of sincere, serious, and silly. If you don't like him now...I'm confident you will soon enough

In Michelangelo's true character, I think he could be adequately be described as BIPOLAR: he is the most mischevous of them but also the most responsible, childish but even more adult, relaxes but even more intense, extroverted but all the more of an introvert. That is what makes his character so dynamic.
Now, I am not entirely convinced the Mike of the new toon is like that... he seems to be a compromise between the 'real' Mirage Mike and the old cartoon Mike... but, we will see.

Yeah I truly like how Mike and Raph play together in the new show...Maybe you can answer this better than I can, Karpo.
Is Raph's hatred of Mike reflected from how they were in the Mirage series? I don't get why he hates him so much, it's like it's completely random that he pushes him around.
Nturtle
02-12-2003, 08:20 PM
Raph pushes Mikey around a bit in the Mirage comics, look at the end of the new #4, Raph starts yelling at him and makes fun of him a bit too.
I don't think its random at allits a great use of their totally oppisite personalities, and yeah it seems like Mikey is the "younger brother" being one I would know!!! :P

Raphael doesn't hate Mike, in the comic or the new animated series. At least not on the surface. What they were doing in the cartoon was just goofing around. It wasn't really that serious.
Now, there MIGHT be a deep hatred of Mike that Raph might have.... a story twist some writer could throw in later down the road.
Namely, Mike is everything Raph wishes he could be. Raph works fervently and incessantly at being a 'better warrior' and likes to put out that 'im a big bad warrior' image, but Mike who does none of that still possesses far superior innate prowess. That's gotta piss him off. Like in the sparring session in the mircoseries, Mike can beat Raph rather easily and isn't even trying to be some 'great warrior'. That has got to be maddening.
Mike is rather relaxed and happy with their less than fortunate living conditions, and Raph is not. Mike constant cheery attitude and pleasant disposition in the face of such obvious suffering must also be maddening to Raphael.
The straw on the camel's back is Mike's ability to get along with his other brothers, even though he is in many ways just as individualist as Raph. Mike connects with, and gets along with, people as if its no problem and yet still preserves his own individuality. That has just gotta piss off Raph.
So.... no, there is obviously no surface hatred of Raph for Mike... but I think, deep down and suppressed, there might be.

Yeah, I'm bumping an old thread (one that seems to have veered way off topic), but since I'm starting with the new toon, I found a thread that had the same subject without 4 years of extra info that I don't know much about yet :-).
So far I've seen Eps 1 and 3 (2 was skipped for some reason). One thing I found interesting about Mikey in the first episode is that he repeats exactly what Splinter said earlier to Raph. Though Mikey may not seem like he's paying full attention, I think he really is.
The line I'm talking about first occurs when they're all trying to put out the candle. After Raph tries, Splinter says "Poor choice, Raphael."
Later, when the 3 turtles are calling for Raph to hide behind the building, yet Raph jumps into the truck, Mikey says "Poor choice, Raphael."
I found it interesting that even though Mikey was crumpled in a corner after his failed attempt when Splinter first uttered the line, he was still paying attention. My impression of him so far is that, though he may seem like a goof, he is learning in his own way.

He's not my favorite....I don't have a favorite turtle, never will.
He can act dumb at times, but truth is, he's pretty smart considering he can hold his own as a ninja....he's very talented and can formulate strategies by thinking outside the box (ie: when he swallowed the key card in Turtles in Space 3, or when he guided Leonardo in handling Touch and Go in Nobody's Fool).

I agree, Mikey is smarter then people give him credit for. In Touch and Go he formulated the plan with the subway, and in Reality Check he made a plane that was fairly tricky, I was pretty impressed by it.
Mikey would be a good leader if he didn't goof around so much. But if he stopped, he wouldn't be Mikey anymore.

wow, what a great thread and one that was made back when the series first came out. It is interesting that Michaelangelo's character in as earlier as the first few episodes started such a contraversy on how his character was treated. And its interesting to read all the reactions of the people on here from four years ago and there first impressions on Mike in the new toon. It seems that most of them liked his character and thought it was funny and "more real".
Now that the 2k3 series is over and there was a good five seasons to flesh Mikey out, do you all feel the same way about Mikey being funny and cool? Or do you feel that through out his series he has become more and more annoying and immature to like as a result?
Persoanlly when I first saw this series it took the better half of season one to get me to like his character since it was so diffrent from his old toon persona. But I eventually came to like him and accept him for his new personality and quirks. I think Mikey in this incarnations has given me the most mixed feelings about him than any other turtle in this series. I ranged from not liking where the writters where going with his character to sort of liking the depth and evoloution that seemed to peak out in his character in certain episodes.
Over-all I think Michaelangelo slowly advanced through out the seasons but mostly stayed the same. i think the most advancement he got was in seasons three and four (haven't seen season five aka: Ninja Tribunal). Where he they seemed to give a least one or two in depth episodes Like (Grudge Match) but to be honest I wish they had gone a bit further and not comprimised his charqcter so much for comic relief. there where many times where I felt he was just a filler character and the other turtles where just character evolving and plot driveing characters. Which I don't think is right because the stoary should be about all four of them not just three.

Mikey is Mikey, he gets the job done when he needs to but there is nothing wrong with having a lot of fun...right?
A good example was Touch and go...Its just him and Splinter and he comes up with a plan that gets them out of a bad situation...Mikey says he likes this using my mind thing
Splinter says...yes it is a brave new world for you....
My new fave Mikey moment was a FF eppy (Yes I said it)
the Fly to the moon one where they run into the Gunjin again. He has that Raph puppet with him the whole time through the entire episode and as you watch it it pops up in the background or on his back and he does some really funny stuff with it...
Mikey is also good for some comic relief and you just have to like the guy..unless he brings up his battle nexus trophy...
triplexxx
04-20-2007, 12:06 PM
Michaelangelo proved to be a good deal more than comic relief. He was smart, capable, and in every major battle a good contributor to the team. Not to mention, he actually got visible fame/glory for his accomplishments: the trophy and medal for his Battle Nexus victory, two statues erected in his honor (Battle Nexus & Reality Check), and an actual membership in the Justice League in Membership Drive. I think the new series did a good job focusing on all four of them and was never over-centric on anyone.

Except he realized that he didn't deserve the promotion. He felt guilty, shamed that he didn't have as great of a challenge (since it wasn't long term) compared to his brothers.
However, relative to his own personal weaknesses, he admitted with humility to himself and to everyone that he had a problem. That was a huge step for him and for that Splinter advanced him to chunin. What does Mikey do at the end of the episode? He trains without being a responsible elder or peer ordering him to do so.
Those who are inclined to pursue their "passions" will always have that monster/temptation to fight with. But awareness of that problem is a sign of maturity. As Michelangelo grows more mature he will find ways to work around his negative tendencies instead of letting them drive him, preventing him from fully realizing his potential.
Every person who is easily distracted/has trouble staying on task can relate. :P

ionno about anyone else, but he did make me laugh...maybe at least once per episode. i mean, if not for the way he acts, then for the way that donnie or raph respond to him. raph's expressions like "words fail me" etc still make me laugh like an idiot at a cartoon.

He has always had lame jokes in every incarnation I've seen but he is still funny and he's the most light-hearted of all the turtles and I think that is a very good thing. They need at least one of them to be the joker of the bunch and to help lighten even the darkest of times.

Nice. I guess we'll have to wait and see if Mikey does indeed change or if he remains his usually self that he has been through 5 1/2 seasons of 2k3. My best guess says Mike stays his slacker self but we won't know until we see more FF eps. If he does make a change, he is worthy of the move. If he doesn't, thent that whole show of humility was a clever way of moving to chunin. Sneaky mike.

the thing with Mikey is, I don't mind him being the jokester of the group, I just don't like when he is acting out in a serious situation and just making an ass of him self. During the duration of an episode I find my self saying "Oh God, SHUT-UP Mikey!!" at least once. It wasn't so bad in the very start of the series but I feel that as time went on the writers compromised his character more and more just to get in a few cheap laughs. Usually at Michaelangelo's expense. Garbageman has got to be the worst episode in the series where Mikey is doing the most embarrassing stuff just to get a laugh. It was not funny. It was obnoxious, the writers wicked compromise his character. The writers got a little better at this in season four but for most of the series the writers really took a lot of liberties with his character just to sell him as comic. Relief. And actually its not so much what Mikey does that makes me cringe its the way his brothers (and other characters) react to his antics that make it the most painful. Every one in the series reacts with a sort of flinchy perplexed/disdainful "what the hell is wrong with you" sort of way toward Michelangelo. Eck, Mikey get no respect lest of all from his brothers, eighther they are smacking or looking down on him. And the smacking (although pretty darn funny most of time) get a bit old after while.
I mean most of the time he deseves it but there are a few times where (as the viewer) I get a bit irritated when I see one of his brothers smack him up side the head.
Its not so much for the action but the fact that Mikey just lets it happen, and doesn't do anything about it. It kind of puts Mikey in a position of submission and I don't like that to much. And its not just the smacking thing, sometimes I just plain don't like how the other turtles talk down to Mikey and he doesn't say anything back. One of the biggest things that one of the turtles said to Mikey that really bugged me was in the episode "Adventures in turtle Sitting" when, after Mikey made some joke about Don throwing up in the van, Raph smacks Mikey and says: "Quite Mikey. The adults are talkinging". I mean it was funny and all but for some reason I thought the comment was a bit on the degrading side and it annoyed me that, 1) it was said, and 2) Mikey didn't say something back. But that could just be my personal bias talking since I like Michaelangelo and don't want to see him as a wimp or talked down too.
I mean Mikey has alot of talent, there is no need to get all scared and chicken out with his talent. Thats why I didn't think it was nessasary for him to act all cowardly like he did for most of "Notes from the Underground" story src. It seemed ridiculous considering when he was left all on his own he actually stepped up and acted usefully. So what the heck was the deal with the freak outs during that arc?
That aside I don't think Michelangelo in this incarnation is dumb. Even though he acts juvinale at times and doesn't think things through, I do think that this is smartest version of Mikey that I have ever seen. In fact I get a little confused why there is so much talk in the show about him not being smart when he has shown that he is.
Mikey is both the carefree member but also the geeky member. at least his obsession with comics are no longer things kids like its very geeky, same with the way he gets about videogames.
He would be my favorite on the new show except sometimes they over do the "kid" gene in him and he becomes annoying.

Mikey is not dumb. He can be childish at times, but mostly he is carefree and just wants to have fun. He has proven he can plan and win a stituation on his own. He does it when he has to, but would rather let his brothers handle it.
I go to work everyday beacause I need a paycheck; do laundry because I need clean clothes; go to the store because I need food; etc. You get the point. I do things because I have to. If I had three brothers that I know would take care of it, I'd let them to.
I think Mikey take the abuse because he knows he is a slacker and figures it is a small trade off for goofing off. He also sees the humor in all things and just lets everything roll of his shell. I wish I could be more like him. Maybe my job wouldn't be giving me a ulser then.
Mike isn't my favorite turtle, but his would be the best personality to have to make real life easier to handle.

Hey I am being Mikey right now. I have a house to clean, bills to pay and dinner to make, but instead I am on the forums.
GO MIKEY!!!!!!
I agree with all of this. I'm a little like Mikey in lazyness. I think that Mikey goofs off to get his brothers attention

I think he goofs because he wants to avoid the seriousness of life with humor. He can still be intelligent and goofy at the same time. If everyone passes him off as "dumb" due to his sillyness, he doesn't have to deal with any problems cuz someone else will do it themself.

And also, what if you had to live with having killed people before? As ninjas, the turtles may have to kill at times, and when yiou kill someone, even justifiably, it's kinda hard not to dwell on it and to not feel remorse over it. Humor can be used to suppress remorse, because if remorse were to get the better of any of the turtles, it could slow them down, taint their skill, and may get them killed.

Going back a few posts and off topic: Does Raph break Leo's swords in the 2k3 series, too, or was that referring to the movie?

leo's swords do break in 2k3, but not cuz of raph, though.

Sorry to keep hijacking. When does this happen?
And to make this post on-topic:
I just saw The Unconvincing Turtle Titan (or something like that). I was actually dreading this episode, since it doesn't sound like the best plot and I was afraid of Mikey overload. I actually didn't mind it. I think I've seen better episodes, but it wasn't bad. I didn't like the superhero, I like to think there aren't any conventional superheroes in the TMNT world (just aliens and stuff), but that's a subject for another thread. I felt sorry for Mikey when *everyone* was making fun of him. Raph you can expect it from, probably some light teasing from Donnie, but I was shocked at Leo. Poor Mikey.

i'd hate to ruin the plot for ya tho, if you haven't watched.
when the foot ambushes leo right before shredder's second encounter with'm. after leo was knocked into april's apartment semi-unconscious, shredder got ahold of leo's blades and snapped them into tiny bits. very sad episode.
btw, who hates mikey? i love mikey. go mikey go mikey go. :tgrin:

Mike has always been my least favorite turtle and 2k3 and FF made him even worse.
The only times I can honestly say I've ever liked Michaelangelo was during Image comics tmnt and Mirage vol.4
But it might say something about me because Donatello & Raphael are my favorite turtles.

So was Mike your least favorite in movie 1 as well? That's interesting because it seems to me that Don is the most out of character in that film. He is portrayed as a skateboarder and Casey's buddy. I just watched movie one today and decided that Don was way way off. Even the voice... no. Don's movie 1 version is by far my least favorite. Movie 2, although inferior to the first, at least got Don closer.

How is Don Caseys buddy? They exchange insults with one another for one scene while they work on a truck.
And wowza Don skateboards? wow it really has been a long time since I watched the first movie.
And no I've just never been fond of public "stoner" munchie Michaelangelo I like characters with a bit of brain, attitude, & Sarcasm behind them hence why I like Don & Raph so much no matter what the voices where these 2 always where this way.
Mikey just has always come off as the lost scooby doo character to me.

I suppose. Perhaps I am way off base but Don just didn't sit right with me in movie one. I explained why I thought so rather poorly. hmmm. Why do I feel this? I just do.:)

He would be my favorite on the new show except sometimes they over do the "kid" gene in him and he becomes annoying.
Yeah, I know alot of people who feel the same way. I really wish the writters would stop embelishing Mikey's childish side. I mean it is cool that he is the young care-free turtle and doesn't sweat the little things, but they can do that with out over doing it and making him appear way younger than what he actully is. A lot of people have been saying that Michaelangelo has been getting a lot of focus and spot light in FF, but really I don't think it is the right type of attention, that focuses mostly on his obsessions (with the exeption of the Graduation episode, where I heard actually tries to grow him a little). I would like to see his other characteristics explored and focused on.

class of 2105 trys to show his turn from inmaturity to maturity but after this ep, he goes back to his goof ball self. I felt they succesfully showed his maturation, but if he doesn't stay mature, what is the point?

The thing about New Toon Michaelangelo is that his whole nuance is that he is untapped potenticial incarnate, but yet it never really gets realized (except during crunch time). In the New toon he seems to be represented as having loads of natural talent for ninjitsu if he ever put forth more effert to develop it. And even though it is a very interesting character dynamic to play up in the show of him being this goofy class clown-esch person that actually has the potencial to be a powerful warrior if he wanted to...but doesn't.
Haveing a character whos whole point is to have great potenticial but never realize it is sort of annoying. I'm tired of Mikey's great potenticial mearly being hinted at or kept in the back groud. I want to actually see it it play out on my screen. Not it being said a few times by the characters, and it only get awknoweldged during crunch time.
And I agree with Neutrino. Very often the show dedicates an episode to having Mikey over come obstacles and matures very nicely, but it doesn't stick. Its like he constantly takes stepp forward and then takes steps back.

Not getting acknowledged...well, he got 2 statues erected in his honor, a trophy, a medal, and a name for himself in the Justice Force. He's the only one who's received any visible fame for his accomplishments. So I'd say he got a pretty large deal of actual "acknowledgment".

I agree, Mikey's just too laid back and/or modest to make a big deal out of it.

Well, modesty is a good trait of his, except for the times when he does brag, which I think he probably does as payback for all those whaps on the head if you know what I mean.

I have always liked Mikey. Raph is my fav, but Mikey is just one of those characters that I find I like in all incarnations. He comes off as a goof, but he has those moments of awesomeness (I think I just made up a new word ;) ) Mikey is just funny, not always ha-ha funny, but I always manage to at least laugh at one his jokes :)
