View Full Version : What if the OT was revived and aimed at adults?

I know it'd be quite easy to take the Mirage comics or Image comics and make an animated series based off of them. However, that's not what this thread is about. Instead of discussing SOOPER DARK ADULT MUTANT DARK NINJA KILLING MACHINE DARK RETILES GWAR DARK TURTLES DARK DARK DARK I was thinking about something else.

There are plenty of non-violent comedy shows on network television and cable aimed at adults. That's pretty much what the OT was throughout the majority of it's course: a comedy (with a little action here and there). So, what if the OT was revived and was given a tone aimed more at the 20-something and above crowd who was around for the original OT? What would the personalities be like? How would the show play out? I'll start us off...

Raphael - I would imagine his personality turning into something similar to Dr. Cox from Scrubs. He's synical, sarcastic, and his wit is actually really funny. That, and I would like to hear Rob Paulson do an insulting, sarcastic rant in the style of Dr. Cox, anyway.

There's an example. You don't have to agree with me or think that you can't do "Raphael" now for your example. But, yeah, just take a crack at it. It'll be fun!

EDIT: Oh yea, and if it wasn't overt enough already... I'd like to see Shredder, Krang, Bebop, and Rocksteady played off even more as the "dysfunctional family" than they already were in the OT.

It'd be pretty cool to see. I mean, it'd be different than the family oriented cartoons on Fox (American Dad, Family Guy, Simpsons) and the weirder humor of Adult Swim. It'd be like a mix of the two.

A) It wouldn't be the old toon.

And the all important B) I would NEVER EVER watch TMNT again.

An adult-aimed OT would have to play off Shredder and Krang as an "old married couple". That would be effin' hilarious.

A) It wouldn't be the old toon.

And the all important B) I would NEVER EVER watch TMNT again.

So the old toon be marketed at kids is a good idea, 2K3 being marketed at adults is a good idea, but Fast Forward being marketed at kids is a bad idea?

I don't get the logic.

Anyways, Red Sky got decently close but then again most fans have that as #3 on their hate list right below FF and Next Mutation.

Jo Dawn
11-28-2007, 09:53 PM
No, my point was that they old toon was targeted towards kids, so making it NOT makes it totally different.

And I never said it was a good idea THEN, either. Either way, any old toon revival immediately means I no longer watch.

VaughnMichael

ft whatever all fans arent going to like the same thing.
So what if you don't like everything tmnt does I sure as hell don't.
I think it would make like an interesting direct to dvd series but I cant see the old toon coming back in any shape or form.

But, if it did happen... how would you personally see it happening?

Jo Dawn

'Specially since Pete says nay.

He's a smart man, he is...

Well, of course he says nay. This is all hypothetical.

Spitfire

Well on the subject I could see it as you described. The old toons charm would be great if it was mixed with the action of the new series. A hybrid would be great. The new series seriously lacks the cool mutant aspect.

Kendamu
11-28-2007, 11:34 PM
Well, yeah. In a way, though, that's kind of like "What if Season 1's quality lasted all ten years?"

That would be cool, by the way.

I wonder who some of the other OT characters would kind of be like if given a more adult-focused sitcom style humor...

AquaParade

The Ot toon with just a few modifications to direct it closer to the comic, and a slightly darker tone then season one, would be heaven for me.

Whoa, for some reason I think of an "Adult Swim"-style TMNT show I hear a scenario like this play out:

Mike stumbles into the lair with his headband on sideways, singing "Smack Dat" and chuckling to himself; he makes his way to the nearest chair and falls into it. Raph and Casey are plopped in front of the tube, watching a late-night action moviefest. Raph lets out a belch after chugging his twelfth beer and call over to Mike "Hey bro, how'd ya make out with that chick?"

Mike: *laughs* With my mouth dumbass! Anyway, ya shoulda seen her dude, total hotness!"

Anyway, I'm going to stop right there...my point is the concept could work if done right like "Batman:TAS" or even "Spawn" if you want a true adult hero cartoon. Spawn didn't last long, but it was cool.

Just as long as we don't see OT toons played out in Family Guy fashion:

Leo: Hey Don, whatcha got there?
Don: It's a microwave neural disruptor, something you're puny mind couldn't comprehend.
Leo: Can I touch it?
Don: No.
Leo takes out his sword and slices it, "Fine, I'll just cut it then!"
Don: What the hell did you just do?!
Leo: I just said stupid, I cut it. You wouldn't let me touch it so I whacked it with my shiny cutty-thingy.

Okay, I'm bored at work and this is what it leads too....I better go find something to do.

Later all.

Personally, other than a DTV movie, I do NOT want to see OT turtles revived as a new series. They already did that. If they were to do a Turtles for adults, I would want it to be directly based off the comics, and all the turtles have red bandanas...

I think that if they did do a new OT series and geared it towards the older fans w/o making it adult (i.e everything has to be a sex joke, which has just gotten onld for me), and made the plots similarly structured as the 2k3 series's best story arcs, it could work. I would like to see that.

Otherwise, I would hate to see a retread show with a few sex jokes tossed in to make it "adult"

I can't really imagine it... seems wierd to me.

Kendamu
11-29-2007, 02:01 PM
Well, of course a true-to-the-comics version would be awesome. That's a given. That's why I geared this topic in another direction from:

SOOPER DARK ADULT MUTANT DARK NINJA KILLING MACHINE DARK RETILES GWAR DARK TURTLES DARK DARK DARK

And if the OT was revived with an older target audience it wouldn't necessarily have to be all sex jokes. Not every joke aimed at adults is about sex. Just look at this:

Elliot: I put all those flyers up and no one wants me to live with them.
J.D.: Oh, c'mon, Elliot, I'm sure you'll eventually find a roommate who's a clean non-smoking vegetarian that rinses the shower thoroughly after each usage.
Elliot: Well, if you don't it gets mildewy.
J.D.: You should live with my friend, Anal McLooney.

No sex! Still comedy. Still not aimed directly at chidlren.

Ok, so it would work and be cool... If...

They ditched the crap comedy and drawing. Got rid of Bebop, Rocksteady, Krang and possibly Shredder, though I could deal with him.

As long as April wasn't a ditzy mean reporter with bad fashion sense and rid her of Irma. Oh, and they made sure there were no Neutrons or whatever, no bug Baxter, no bad theme song AND if they could possibly make them a family and not have Splinter introduce them as 'friends'.

So, if they did all that as a revival, I might check it out.

I always thought Bug Baxter could work if done properly, but only because if it was done by me, it'd have the same results as him being stuck in a robot body. I'd just use it as a device to make baxter go mad.

I dunno. If I had the time to learn Flash like I planned on (damn school) I'd make a more concrete example of how I envision the idea of reviving the OT.

If I still care over the summer I just might do it. I can't promise good voice acting, though.

If there was a revival of the old toon, I think it would be cool if they played with the "Slash" character a little bit more. Make him a little smarter and more sadistic instead of the complete moron (except the one episode where he got super smart) that he was in the OT.

Also it would be cool if each turtle sort have had his own 'arch-rival'. I think it would be cool if Raph and Slash were sort of 'arch-rivals'. Maybe have their own 'one on one' stories and plot developments.

(I guess what I mean by "arch-rival" is like in the X-Men cartoon Wolverine/Sabretooth had the whole 'rival/mano a mano' background to it...if that makes any sense).

Maybe have similar plot threads with Leo/Shredder or Donny/Stockman...their own rivalry stories as well. Heck even Mikey could have a more playful rivalry with Bebop and Rocksteady, or whoever.

But like krang i wouldn't want the comedy to be left out, it's the essence of the ot.

Krang, my love... I have. I bought the first couple DVDs... And I couldn't finish one episode. I was sad that, um, it was worse than I remembered. Though I have to admit to you that I wasn't as highly entertained by it even back then as much as my brother was... He was always into that kinda humor. I wasn't as much.

But who knows... Maybe one day I'll suck it up and try watching it again...

Jo Dawn

How does that sound like I'm fond of them? I'm not fond of the OT as much as the rest, no. The (lack of) humor didn't appeal to me. I liked 2K3, FF not counting. I like the comics. I like most parts of the movies. This topic only has to do with OT. And the OT is not 'the' TMNT.

I love the potential TMNT has. I'd also love to fully discuss my theories in detail, but that's off topic and I'm not sure how close to the 'no bashing' rule. Because they aren't as shallow as they appear.

Exactly. I just don't see the Turtles doing anything like that unless it was a parody in Family Guy or something. I second a small series or DTV movie, since... well, how do you do old style TMNT without copying the episodes they already had, even inadvertantly?

A revival of that kind would only work if everyone from the first series was involved. That is why I liked how 2k3 was different. Could you imagine if they did the same type of show without the original writers or voice actors? it would be nothing more than a pale imitation and in no way as well done.

Plus, as I said, even if you do it really well, how do you prevent it from becomming a retread of the series?

As for the Krang and Shredder playing off each other as an old Married couple... well... isn't that what James Avery said they were doing in the old series anyway (according to one of the DVD interviews)?

1) If there were an OT revival aimed at an audience that gre up on the OT and was aimed at that audience, I would think it would be best if the old crew was involved also. No questioning that.

2) Krange and Shredder: The difference between how it was in the OT and how I'd like to see it in a revival is the difference between how they literally were in the OT and how James Avery presented the situation when asked "What's Shredder doing now?" in his interview on one of the OT DVDs.... Season 4 or 5, I think.

See,
I like the TMNT Fast forward about a hundred times more, 2k3 series Ten thousand times more, the Archie comics universe that started out based on the old toon, four thousand times more, and the Mirage studios comics about a billion gazillion times more. Unlike most, my first expose to TMNT was the Mirage books. Even back then I thought the 80's toon was to campy.
I don't like over the top comedy, I can't stand "Jackass" type crap.
TMNT in my opinion wasn't meant to be campy any moreso than Batman.
Do we realy need the TMNT version of a Joel Schumacker screw up?
NO. I don't think so.
But that's my opinion.
The old toon did have some great episodes, The pilot episodes were the best ones, and beat the crap out of a lot of the toons competing with it at the time. I wish the would have concentrated more on action adventure and left the one liners at a minimum.

And rob the TMNT of their one, true, and only legacy? Nah. Leave the bitter pills at home. The show was better for the comedy, and look where the ratings were WITH the 'net nerd comic fanbase appeal. Nothing much until FF (which is garbage, and you clearly only like it out of bias against the superior original series). Adam West is also still regarded as one of the definitive Batman actors (the series itself was based on the campy tone of the comics at the time).

Do we realy need the TMNT version of a Joel Schumacker screw up?

I just wish for a TMNT show with a nice balance between the humor and nostalgia of the OT with the seriousness and action of the NT. I think Bebop and Rocksteady and Krang aren't necessarily bad...depending on how they would be handled.

But my ideal TMNT cartoon would be different from someone else's...depends on the person

An astute point in mentioning Batman. But then again, Batman has been around longer, since the 40's. And as such has had many different adaptions ranging from Comedy to Dark Drama (and everything in between).. It is not unusual for a comic book to have different adaptions. You can have Superman being the last son of Krypton, raging a battle against Luthor that can become bloddy and bitter, whilest at the same time he can appear on Sesame Street (http://youtube.com/watch?v=_hRKBPTu8vw) talking about the letter S.

To me, TMNT is no exception. However, there is one tiny difference. Other than the OT, the Movies, next Mutation, and both 2K3 and FF had the same tone.

Personally, I want to see the Turtles in many different interpretations as possible, and not have them just beat the same dead horse over and over. I'd kill for 5 years from the end of the 2k3 era production we see either the "Ultimate TMNT" series or a series made entriely from the comic book. Red Bandanas- no Pizza.

TMNT's legacy will always be the old series. That's not to say that's the only way they should be preserved. If TMNT have to do straight through comedy again, I'd love a series based loosely off of Hedden McWenie's version of the turtles. Something different.

It's like, I would love to see a new Ducktales series, but I'd rather see a more straight up interpretation of Don Rosa and Carl Bark's stories. We lose Launchpad and the different Beagles, but we've already seen that.

WHAT?! Get rid of Launchpad McQuack? Come on, he was the coolest! Though I must admit he had a far better role on Darkwing Duck, which I would love to see them retool for the 21st Century!
