Dooce.com posted this awesome commentary and link (http://www.dooce.com/2007/11/28/keep-it-knees-please) today, with a bizarre poster used at BYU to promote personal grooming and appearance:

Not exactly what Dooney had in mind with that image, I bet...

Cause no one knows personal hygiene like four prepubescent mutant turtles who live in a sewer.

What the Hell kind of school is that? o.o Even private schools around here allowed facial hair, sleeveless shirts, and hair past the collar.

^^BYU is a University in Utah affiliated with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS) :)

It is kind of funny to have four naked turtles talking about a dress code

I have facial hair, it's totally not cool dude. Easy for turtles to make those rules they don't have hair.

Seriously though what Nazi Death Camp school decided on these rules?

I used to go to a christian school and it was the same way.
Yay for things that arent even important being made into strict rules.
How about teaching kids things that will get them through life.

If you think this is bad you should look at some of the others.

(psst, I go to BYU :P Don't hate... you're aware of these rules when you apply, so it's your own fault if you don't like it. Me, I'm glad I don't have to see girls walking around looking like sluts all the time.)

Yeah, this looks about right. Though the use of TMNT is somewhat odd, haha - I've never seen this particular one. And I love the overly "hip" slang used in it... college flyers always end up looking like some nerd wrote it at 2am one night, and got a big kick out of it at the time. Up in the library somewhere there's a sign over one of the new shredders with one of the NT Shredder cliparts on it. It made me laugh.

Yeah, I think that's what made it so funny to me--the excessive use of "dude" with these really smooth-looking NT turtles, lol.

I don't know what's worse... the fact they used the turtles or the fact they used cool hipster slang to promote conformity.... Wowsers...

Pretty soon, we could see a poster of Bart Simpson saying: Kowabunga! You know what's cool, man? Getting a midlevel job at a major business, dude! Like, wearing a suit and tie is the coolest thing, Bro!

Besides, they used the wrong characters to promote boring attire... they could have easily gone with

or even

Now those guys scream cool, dude.

The turtles and BYU and are only jealous of my impressive Abe Lincoln neard. (That's a neck-beard for all you slow folks.)

Wait a second, Jesus had facial hair too! Can aything Jesus did be wrong? Didn't Moses have an eyebrow ring? These people are messed up.

Wait a second, Jesus had facial hair too! Can aything Jesus did be wrong? Didn't Moses have an eyebrow ring? These people are messed up.The no-facial-hair thing is probably a remnant of the '60s-70s, where growing a beard was a rebellion thing and was much more of a polarized issue. It doesn't mean all beards are bad always... just a thing we have. There are a lot of guys on campus who think the rule is dumb and outdated, but they had to agree to it when they came, so whatever. I think clean-shaven is hotter myself. :P

It's really not as huge a deal as you all are making it out to be. Does anybody pity the guy with the green mohawk when he signs up for the army and is forced to shave it? No, he knew about that before he chose to sign up (and if he didn't, he's kinda out of touch). You sign on your application to BYU whether or not you agree to follow the honor code, and if you don't like the rules you can just as easily go to UVSC, UofU, or heck, out of state instead.

The poster is dumb, yes. Let's focus on the poster, please.

I don't think he/she meant to insult you, Mask. The school, I'm sure, has very good merits, because you're there and you signed something to be there. I don't like seeing girls dressed like sluts, either. My problem is not with the people who choose to go there, but with the administration and rules.

I find it odd how out-of-touch the rules of the university are, though. It's also a huge underestimation of college student intelligence to put up a slangy poster featuring characters that appeal mostly to kids (or us). ;) Getting someone to shave off his beard will not make him suddenly believe that, say, God wants America to occupy Iraq. Or something.

If you guys wanna see something scary, go check out the student expectations (http://www.bju.edu/prospective/expect/index.html) for Bob Jones University. It freaks me out that you can't hold hands with your significant other, and you need a chaperon to go on a date. If I were the chaperon, I'd be like, "I'm gonna wait outside this hotel while you two go release your sexual frustration." I kind of want to go to BJU as some undercover person, and go to the chapel and pretend to be a good fundamentalist while missing the entire point of a religion, and maybe start up a relationship with my roommate or something. Heh heh. ;)

WHAT? They have forbidden DANCING?

Didn't various characters in the Bible dance for joy and praise?

The other one I object to is the hiking boots in the women's dress code section. One would think that hiking boots would be useful in the winter.

And what in the world is with their controlling music?

I very much dislike mind control.

I don't know. A dude tweezing his eyebrows might be considered "too feminine."

While I do agree with you that anyone who signed up for the University knows what they are getting into, I have to disagree with your drawing an analogy to enlisting in the army. Keeping your hair short in the armed forces serves a practical purpose, while rules such as these are trying to enforce some artificial set of social standards that as you say don't really have a basis in religious belief at all but in some preconceived notions derived from the conservatives of the '60s-'70s

In danger of getting this thread locked for religious discussion, I just have to say that the rules don't bother me in themselves, but I do feel that they make Mormon's out to be crazy fundamentalists, when they're not. My college roommate is a Mormon and he's probably the most sane, down-to-earth, and good person I know.

Rooish... <3

And yes, BJU's rules are very strict. You're not even allowed to listen to most music or watch movies in the residence halls. Screw that. I'd sneak in TMNT and watch it on my laptop when no one was around.

I find this funny coming from the person that started the thread saying that she was "APPALLED at the fact that in [TMNT], April and Casey are cohabiting." (http://forums.thetechnodrome.com/showthread.php?t=20184) So you're appalled when you see things that don't conform to your social standards, yet when you come across standards that are "more strict" than yours, you call it "mind control."

Here's how I'm looking at it...

"Hey, dudes! Cowabunga! If you want to keep going to our religious school, you can't have long hair or facial hair! It's ungodly and Jesus, who obviously bore a close resemblance to Mr. Clean, will cry! While you're at it, dress as modestly as possible as to help avoid triggering people's human urges that'll make them question the rules of their super-strict religion once they finally give in and get laid! Take it from us, four awesomely-radical evolved Naked Mutant Hairless Turtles! Richeous!"

Dancing and listening to country music do NOT result in broken hearts, STDs, or children you cannot take care of.

I wouldn't be so sure about the country-music part. :P

And about the actual topic...way to raise openminded children lolz
(i know i know, the actual school itself may be not that bad, but still...nay).

The poster rocks though. ^^

meh, don't beat up on the values taught by the religion. Alot of my friends in school were LDS and let me tell ya, if they would be friends with someone like me, (crazy mixed breed that I am) they are pretty open minded ;)

So TMNT AND Shredder grace the halls there at BYU. Sounds like there's more than one humongo TMNT fan walking around, Masky :)

Seems like if they were trying to be relevant and cool (seriously now) they should have gone The Office.

I could really see the same poster (minus the dude talk) with Dwight... or the same poster (with the dude talk) with Michael on it. Something that says "look professional, you're an adult." Clearly without kid appeal characters...

Hehe, that's awesome! I went to a christian school in high school! It f*ckin' rocked! We left for lunch all the time, had snack breaks, when the principal didn't feel like coming in he'd call in a half-day of school; we wore whatever we wanted, looked however we wanted to, jeez....my school was like "That '70's Show"! Hehe, my senior year I only had one real class, my science credit I attained by sitting in the office for an hour while the principal went god knows where and left about 11. I was prolly the only person that did the work and it got me Valectorian. So yeah, not all private schools are bad. Just those up there. :dead:

LOL, Sagey.

Even better -- they didn't allow mixed-race dating until, like, 2004. Not that they had any official problem with any particular race (it's a multiracial school), but they decided that God made the races to be separate. (But equal, I presume.)

Um ... maybe this thread is getting too religious/political? Sorry, that was my fault.

Well then they should have used old school Mirage pics then I guess.

As much as I like the Turtles, if my school used cartoon characters to try to inform me about dressing decently I would have felt a little insulted. But if "extreme hairstyles" include that emo hair, maybe it isn't so bad.

Well, it's as every religious zealot says... every single cartoon ever (except Veggytales) is trying to turn kids gay. And that JFK was an alien liberal oppressor and Lee Harvey Oswald is actually a liberator from planet Conservatron 8.

Just kidding.
