Hi all,
i've been doing some reading and i hear that like issues 1-4 of TMNT Vol 1, the early issues of Cerebus are oversized. can anybody confirm or deny this?

like TMNT, Cerebus is such a great read (well, i picked up the first 5 or 6 copies of High Society...issue 25 onwards). not to forget the good ol' crossover in TMNT #8 :P

really great stuff. anybody else collect these?

Though haven't gotten to reading them yet, I have recently been getting the TPBs (as they've been re-offered through Previews, one a month).

I got Cerebus: Volume 1 for Christmas and I'm enjoying it so far. Other than that, I have TMNT Vol 1 #8 and two or three other Cerebus comics. I figure after I read Volume 1, I'll get Guys and/or Rick's Story.

Technically Cerebus isn't really off-topic since the TMNT DID encounter him in Vol. 1. Plus he made a brief appearance in the 2K3 series...sorta.

I have the old colorized TPB with the Cerebus issue. These days the creator of Cerebus would probably refuse to let that issue be a part of future trades, wouldn't he? :(

I heard he's weird about allowing people to use the character like that these days.

Is he weird about that kind of stuff, but he is on the record for giving Peter/Mirage permission to reprint the issue. However, Peter is ignoring that and is replacing the entire #8 with a brand new story that he didn't even bother to write OR draw. :dead:

Doesn't that issue introduce Renet too though IIRC? She shows up again in the turtles comics, heck they mention their adventure in an issue of tales which was recently re-released via trade paperback.

IMO if Dave Sim gives you permission to reprint the thing, you better take advantage of it.

Don't ask me to make sense of it. I can't.

But here's some (unfortunately bad) photos of what we can expect to replace he #8 we all know and love:

That was published in a Spanish TPB earlier this year.

Cerebus is a great comic ... but I dislike Dave Sim so strongly--despite his brilliance--that I think I'll wait to buy the Cerebus comics until after he's died. ;)

As for that remake of Issue 8, it looks like $hit compared to the original ... even though it looks like Lawson put more work into the pages than he often does.

I've got quite a few comic creators that I have a dislike for. I find it's best to try to enjoy their work despite who they are and try to kind of not associate them with it so much. Like Todd McFarlane on Spider-Man, I really like Spider-Man, so I can ignore that it was drawn by one of the biggest egos in comics. Spawn on the other hand, kind of stank IMO.

I think the best thing to do would be to do what they eventually did for the Star Wars DVDs (after I had already bought them :x): include that "new and improved" issue, but then include that original as an "extra" in the back.

Dave Sim has been doing a promotional tour for his new book Glamourpuss across all the comic message boards he can, and he actually stopped by one of the message boards i am on "The Comic Forums", and i actually asked him about the whole issue #8 fiasco, and this is what he had to say

Hi Dave

I am a big fan of Cerebus, and really looking foward to Glamourpuss. While most of my questions about Glamourpuss have already been answered by other posters, i figured i would ask this one. Why do you feel that at this time in the comics industry it was the right time to launch Glamourpuss ? I personally think that the industry needs a book as different as Glamourpuss in the marketplace, and I applaud you Dave for taking the risk and putting it out there, but I just don't know how many other people feel the same way as me.

Also for a non-Glamourpuss related question, I am a huge fan of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and it was actually that book that turned me onto Cerebus. I wanted to know how you felt about the upcoming collected editions of the original issues coming out next year. The issue that you worked on #8 is being re-written and re-drawn by Peter Laird and Jim Lawson with Cerebus being omitted from the story. I was curious if this was because you objected to having the issue reprinted in the collection or just because Peter Laird didn't want Cerebus in there anymore. I remember reading that you gave approval to it being in the collection, so i am assuming it's the latter.

thanks for your time, and good luck with Glamourpuss

Well, it was a tough call. I was tempted to go ahead with Secret Project Three and try to find something more commercial than glamourpuss as a lead-in to glamourpuss and have glamourpuss as the lead-in to Secret Project One but, finally, I just decided to go ahead with glamourpuss. We'll find out if I made theright call over the next six months or so. I'm told the buzz is pretty good right now, so I'm just trying to stay positive and work hard. After that it's all up to the retailers.

No, as far as I know Pete just doesn't want Cerebus in there and since he has absolute control over the Turtles, it's his call to make. I don't think it's a huge deal. As Kevin pointed out between the original comic book and the First Comics reprint there's probably over 100,000 copies in circulation. I've always held that any artist or writer can reprint anything that they worked on so obviously I'd like to have the original duo-shaded Kevin Eastman story with my Cerebus pictures in the CEREBUS MISCELLANY b&w collection, but I also know better than to go head to head with Pete's a) millions and B) lawyers. Same as with SPAWN 10. I'd like to reprint it in black and white in CEREBUS MISCELLANY and (possibly) redraw the Cerebuses. But unless Todd wants that happen that isn't going to happen no matter what foundatons I choose to conduct my own business on.

Thanks for posting.

Dave Sims problem isn't that he's a jerk, it's that he was publishing 16 page Unibomber-style manifestos on why all women are inferior, evil, stupid, and the most destructive force in the universe.
Most of the time, I don't care about a persons politics or personal beliefs, but there's a line. Holocaust denial is a line, and so is raging, medieval misogyny.

That aside, there's just something messy about having a cross-over in normal cannon. Sure, they can be a fun one-off, but to pull in a whole other universe in a normal issue is kind of distracting.

Normally, I'm fanatical about editing, but with Dave Sims, his involvement would actually make me less likely to buy.

I've never really put much thought into crossovers. I always figured it's just part of the fun of these characters, even if the continuity doesn't always make sense. I don't know how they explained Marvel v. DC, but it was still cool to see the characters interacting with one another.

well to answer my own questions about the early Cerebus issues being oversized, for the record, they aren't.

from the happy new owner of a cheap copy of Cerebus #2. :)

Marvel and DC aren't too jarring to integrate. I'm not completely against crossovers, I just think they should be relegated to specials.

Apparently, Laird's trying to establish an official cannon, and I understand why he wouldn't want the entire Cerberus universe as a part of it. They're publishing that Mirage universe book next year, should cerberus be included? I think it's better to just cut it out.

I think my stance stems from me not liking George Lucas' changes to his movies. There's a ton of stuff I'd never want to see changed, because it was classic just the way it was. The fans thought the stuff was good enough when it came out, I'm baffled as to why the creators can't accept that.

I see the TMNT/Cerebus crossover as a meeting between two indy comics that both managed to get some popularity (of course in TMNT's case their popularity skyrocketed in the late 80's). I think it's a neat crossover.

Given they had gone reality hopping, I'm not seeing the issue with TMNT cannot. I think its probably just an excuse to remove more of Eastmans work, the same as the way he's "redoing" all of the first dozen V1 issues.

Is there really that much bad blood that he can't enjoy the work he once did with his former partner?

Especially since he's denied other people the same permission (See: Spawn Issue 10)
