View Full Version : Tales of the TMNT 41
Raph's Girl

Midtown's saying this is out on Wednesday Jan 9th. Here's what Mirage says about it:
“The Sword” - In the far-flung future an aging Leonardo battles a familiar foe from the past… one final blood-soaked time. Picking up a plot thread from Tales #13, this issue features the wild art of Zombie Commandoes from Hell creator Steph Dumais! With a frontispiece by alphagodz.com!
Yay!! Future Turtles!! :D

Woah, check out this quote from the official site for Issue 41:
Future Leonardo and Radical run into Complete Carnage, who destroys the happy couple's romance. Leonardo first seeks solace in forgiveness, until he discovers the villain is devoid of any virtue.
Romance?
DrSpengler

Read the issue.
Ugh. Just ugh.
I find human/Turtle romance to be nothing more than fangirl fanwank and completely devoid of all value, so take a wild guess as to how I felt about this issue.
Leo's and Radical's "romance" was so completely out of the blue it was embarassing, and they get their freak on about 2 pages after dropping the bomb on the reader. Radical's death was also stupid as all getout; it was like a bad Hollywood movie.
Leo: "We're so in love, nothing could possibly go wrong!"
*Radical dies*
Leo: *drops to his knees and screams to the heavens* "NOOOOOOOO!!!"
That last part isn't even an embelishment. I usually like geriatric Turtles stories, but this one was failure of epic proportions. The art is almost Lawson-bad, too.
The back-up story, "Fathers and Daughters" was a nice epilogue to Casey's arc from "City at War" (you'll notice Don is absent from the story, maintaining continuity). Liked the art, as well.
"Sawn Song" is possibly the worst issue of Tales I've read to date.

Though I'm not opposed to the guys getting some romance in their lives, I'm having a hard time with Leo and Radical. We never get to really know enough about her character for me to feel like I have a handle on what she's like. I enjoyed the writing and the art of this issue, but...Radical? Not feeling it. However, I'm loving the double-bo thing Don's got going on when they're all standing around at Radical's grave, and that crazy page in the Casey story where they're all dressed up and doing weird things to entertain Shadow is priceless.

This is weirding me out SO MUCH. Maybe it is just the whole shock of it. I mean, both Leo and Radical are great. And I am not opposed to the Turtles having relationships. But it's like the Turtles were nearly asexual (except for their crushes on April) during their first thirty-something years. Yet after Splinter is gone, all of a sudden they are thrown into relationships. First Mikey and now Leo. At least Raphael x Ninjara in Archie got MUCH more development.

The Leonardo/Radical thing is a big WTF, but other than that I didn't find the issue to be too terrible. I've read worse. The back-up story is cute and I loooove Dooney's pinup.
Isn't no turtle/human relationships one of Peter's big "commandments"?

Yeah, Turtle/human relationship is pretty weird. That aside, it was an interesting issue, IMO. Its a lot for the reader to handle, but I just assumed a lot of background between Leo and Radical must have occured that we weren't able to see. It seems the Leo/Radical relationship is primarily a spiritual one. As Leo says, it was about "transcendence." This being the older Leonardo, he is reflecting on concepts such as atonement, wholeness, etc. Radical must have become a means to this discipline. It would seem Radical is to old Mirage Leo what Karai could have been for 2k3 Leo.
At least that's my take, for what it's worth.

Now this will be the standard-bearer of how you SHOULD'NT handle Turtle/Human relationships. It says a lot when we have an example of how to do it right in the current series (Don/April) when it's strictly platonic in that example.
Somebody please retcon this exactly in the same way as She-Hulk's affair with The Juggernaught.

I sooo called this first!!! (whether thats good or bad I don't know yet...) I mentioned this in another thread!!! I wrote a letter to Pete Laird after reading Splinter's Funeral issue a few times. I noticed that in a couple of panels Leo and Radical share a hug. I was like WTH and asked in my letter if I was reading too much into it. If you read the letters at the end of TMNT he answered by saying that they did have a special bond but that I'd have to wait and see in furture issues. I was like ok cool. Good for Leo.:P
Apparently not too many people like that. Thats cool too. Personally, I wanted to see the turtles in relationships. That is a part of life. Yes they have each other, but come on...do ya want them to be eunuchs or something. If it wasn't for tragic love, the turtles wouldn't even exsist right? The love triangle between Shen, Hamato Yoshi, and Oroku Nagi ending with Shredder(Oroku Saki) killing Yoshi and Shen, brought Splinter and the turtles together.
All I know of Radical is that she is of native american heritage and was given super powers by the gods or something. She seems like a spiritual type (like Leo-san) so when Laird said they were close, I wasn't too shocked.
Her being a human and he a turtle can cause major controversy. I'm in major shock seeing it in black and white (blush), but then its not like the turtles have many options. The old cartoon turtles also had human type "girlfriends" right...Mike/Kala (alien humanoid),Leo/ Lotus, Raph/Mona Lisa(used to be human), Don/April (bleh). Movie one, Raph is attracted to April and movie III Mike likes Michi. So to me, I thinks it's about time they put a little turtle romance in the comics. Good job Mirage!!:):):)

From my ill-updated Mirage/Image encyclopedia :
McINTYRE, DR. HAZEL : (AKA "Radical," AKA "Raven Shadow Heart") A Native American woman with supernatural power in reality and what is known as the "Dreamscape"; also the arch-enemy of Complete Carnage. Hazel was spoiled rotten since the day she had been born to her heiress mother. As a schoolchild, she was an obnoxious "little goody two-shoes," tattling on her playmates and manipulating adults to get everything she wanted. Lazy and self-centered, she ignored her schoolwork and eventually dropped out of high school. At the age of 22 she had already been married and divorced, mostly because she was surprised to discover that her ex-husband’s entire life did not revolve around her. She ended up moving back with her mother, where she did little more than watch television soaps, order the servants around, and spend her mother’s inheritance money. One day while jogging in Central Park, Hazel was abruptly struck by lightning, instantly being given liquid energy-like power. She loved this power, and soon accepted the moniker of "Radical" (Transdimensional TMNT). Meanwhile, her childhood nemesis Complete Carnage, AKA Max Wilsocchi, was struck by lightning as well while he worked in his concrete construction job, instantly mutating him into a powerful, monster-like being. One of Radical and Carnage’s earliest confrontations occurred when Casey Jones and Raphael stumbled into him while entering a building they thought abandoned. Radical appeared and, after a short fight, flung him halfway across the world (Shell Shock). Another confrontation occurred when Carnage appeared when she was biking, surprising and nearly overtaking her. Now possessing the ability to pass through and absorb into man-made things, Carnage posed an even greater threat. Pulling off his arm, Radical lured him away, then used her "Particle Beam" ability, scattering their atoms and eventually warping them both to the ethereal-like "Dreamscape" (Tales of the TMNT #5). Radical and Carnage sparred for the final time when she sought out Carnage, having the Turtles distract him while she prepared a spell that liquified the road Carnage attempted to dive into, liquifying (and killing) him in the process (TMNT Vol. 1, #27). It seemed the arm Radical pulled from Carnage’s socket got into the hands of the Whelan-Freas Scientific Research Center. The center generated a clone of Carnage from the arm, a clone that escaped to go on a rampage in Chicago. The Turtles, learning of this, sought Radical’s help, who they found to now be going by her Native American name, Raven Shadow Heart, a teacher who then worked toward preserving her culture at the Museum of Natural History in New York. She was unable to intervene against Carnage because she did not have permission from the "Council," (because the creature rampaging was a clone, not the real Carnage—the being she was destined to fight and had already beaten) but the Turtles were victorious nonetheless with the help of Officer Dragon (TMNT/TSD II & TSD series #22).
You can find a good bio on her with background and stats in the TMNT & Other Strangeness books, though as time went on Dooney kind of retconned her a bit (though the two backgrounds can be sort of reconciled together... that's what I tried to above, I think).

The TMNT live in a world dominated by humans, who else are they gonna pork? C'mon, give the guys a break. They save the city and somtimes the entire planet/galaxy/our own reality a couple of times, they're entitled to some nookie. I mean, think how much it would suck if YOU became a mutant turtles and wouldn't be allowed to get any cause 'the fanboys don't want us to'. If I was a turtle, I'd hang myself...

True... but they've been exposed to humans more.... I doubt humans are gonna suddenly start porking the (whatever race Mikey's gf was) or other female aliens anytime soon.... so why would the turtles? It be sad if they haven't screwed a human girl on some random adventure by the time they reached Volume 4 anyways....

I can only imagine two of the Turtles having random adventures. For the other two, it would be WAY OOC.
And I do not know if given their anatomical differences, screwing would be possible. I think they would only get to the heavy petting stage. It would stay at outercourse.

I've tried that, they always give me **** if I don't want 3 or 4 other titles. I only read turtles. That's mainly because I can get the whole story without having to read not only the turtles back issues but 500 other comics without other characters lines. That's why Marvel pisses me off.

I read Green Lantern, so there's plenty of that. I don't mind the occasional mega-crossover, but what happens lately is that things are going from mega-crossover to mega-crossover to mega-crossover, with no real decompression... yeah, not digging it.

No comic stores in Seattle carry it either. You have to special order it, and you can seldom do it after the fact... you need to set up a pull list in advance, and any comic stores that don't do pull lists for customers probably aren't going to be in business long.

Or any character for that matter? I mean, there is more to life than sex. If there were comic characters that never had a romantic interest, I wouldn't mind. Heck, that would probably make the characters a little more relateable for a lot of comic geeks. That includes myself, we know our own.:(
Anyway, they seem to tell a lot of stories about the future turtles. I picked up that future Raph issue recently, and the future turtles were the new intro in each chapter of that Tales trade.

I agree. There is MUCH more to life than just sex. Not having sex does not automatically make you asexual. Or a loser. Or dull. Or mean there's something horrendously wrong with you.
I have one asexual character in my stories. And another one who dies at age 13. Since neither one has engaged or will engage in sexual relations, does that make them bad characters in any way? Absolutely not.

Though I am not too keen on the Turtles having relationships with humans, I like how deep Leonardo's love for Radical was.
I wonder when exactly did Radical's death happen. It was clearly in the distant future, given what Raphael looked like. But was it only 7 years before the actual tale took place? "Relatively young" is vague- he could have been in his 40s or 50s.
I liked the back-up story. I do think it takes place somewhere between the early issues of Volume 2.

Finally able to read this book.
It was an interesting story. Somewhat metaphysical. I actually liked Leo and Radical's relationship. As Leo said it went beyond love. They stayed together for a year and then POOF...she's killed by a suddenly revived Carnage...I don't blame Leo going on a 7 year long sabatical.
Altho I liked the relationship I really didn't "feel" anything when she died....it was like..."Oh cool... Leo's getting some....oh bummer....she's dead..."
Liked the bit of continuity tho with Raph having the eye patch.
The Casey/Shadow story was short and sweet (did ya see the poster of Usagi in one scene? *L*). The guys trying to entertain Shadow was really cute (Raph was dressed as Batman! )

Exactly. I'm getting so sick of every other issue of Tales with "art" by Jim Lawson (more like "doodling by Jim Lawson").
Yeah, I didn't care too much for this issue. The relationship between Leo and Radical seemed to come out of left field to me, and do we really need a page that implies that they did the nasty to make us believe that they love each other? I dunno, I thought it was unnecessary. Plus, the artwork really didn't impress me much. I thought the back-up story was the best part of the issue.

My copy came in yesterday!!!:D
I was pleasently surprised as I read this issue. I think the story was done perfectly.
I nearly fell off my couch when I saw the kiss. :o
If you read past TMNT issues then you'd have a better pic of Radical's character. I like her alot and hope to see her in the cartoon! She can be a new memeber for the Justice Force!! (my imagination is going nuts right now!!
Leonardo's character amazes me; for him to actually want to forgive Carnage...only by God's grace could I forgive a person who killed one of my loved ones. The parts where he states how they were so in love and how they connected in so many ways (GET Yo MIND OUT OF THE GUTTER).....its very sappy but sweet. Who knew Leo was the charming romantic type?! (Don't get me wrong please, I think the turtles are cute like bunnies are cute. ):P
Anyway I highly recommend you read this!

Very surprised here myself: I really liked the issue. At its heart it's a very spiritual journey for Leo that becomes a revenge story with a suitably ballsy finish. The issue doesn't make me a believer or proponent or in any way an advocate of Turtles sexing up humans (and especially to burst open those floodgates, particularly with where hordes of fangirls have taken it in the arena of fanfiction... this was one rule I was really hoping Laird would hold to all the way to the grave), but the way it's presented here really doesn't bother me. We're shown that Leo and Radical develop a relationship, we're shown more or less the why of it, and then it becomes a revenge story from that point.
Fairly epic in its scope, and the art by Steph Dumais is a fine example of a sort of minimalist art without toning done right in the B&W form. What it lacks in any kind of toning it makes up for in a heavy embroidery of thick strokes of black ink, covering each page in heavy atmosphere and conveying well the emotions of the somewhat brooding Leonardo we have here.
Not bad at all.
And a very moving tale by Will Tupper at the end, and killer art by Mr. Kudranski.
Note: And just for giggles, I did some research to see if this "Steph Dumais" is a dude or lady. It's a dude.

as for anything physical...man they could be creative in that respect. never say impossible...if a guy wants it, he'll get it..
I KNEW this issue would bring up alot of discussion. As usual I never understand the big deal, so Leo loved Radical, they kissed, they got down to it, so what. Let them be happy. While the Turtles are drawn to look like humanoids, I don't think anyone would really want to have sex with a mutant turtle if he was real. I don't think it's immoral/bestiality because the Turtles are sentient, but I do think it's stupid to give the Turtles sexual opportunities with humans, because most people would not see the Turtles that way. That said, I thought it was handled well in this issue.

Unless they fall for the turtle cause theyre' personallity....i mean face it, leo would make a good husband and father the way he is,:D

wonder how many Raph's shagged....*looks for his scorecard*.....
Raph's score card?... Mona Lisa (probably), Ninjara (possably), Mezcaal (most definatly since they were married...). Course none of em were really human.. Mona Lisa USED to be human..
Leo's gals have been: Lotus Blossom, Karai (er sorta), Radical, that human woman he was married to and had a daughter with in Tales of Leo (they slept together, they probably did it since she was clearly nude under the covers...)
Mike loves him some aliens: Kala, Seri (will we ever find out if those are his kids??)
Don will forever love April from Affar...
Splinter: Well... the Cat Queen/Goddess seems to like him alot....

dont worry your not. there's just alot of folks who think it's icky. I dont. they're bodies may be stuck in between turtle and human but their minds are human
Only in the original cartoon and Archies do they have any human DNA in there (being how the mutagen works in those universes works as a splicer). And in that, they don't screw anybody.
Except in fanfiction, of course.

Raph's score card?... Mona Lisa (probably),
You made that up.
Ninjara (possably), Mezcaal (most definatly since they were married...). Course none of em were really human..
Which kind of makes their inclusion irrelevant.
Leo's gals have been: Lotus Blossom, Karai (er sorta),
You made that up.
Radical,
*wince*
True.
that human woman he was married to and had a daughter with in Tales of Leo (they slept together, they probably did it since she was clearly nude under the covers...)
A dream. Irrelevant.
Mike loves him some aliens: Kala,
You made that up, too.
Seri (will we ever find out if those are his kids??)
Don't forget Sara/Horridus from Vol. 3, too. And I bet they won't be his kids the way things were going last in Vol. 4... but it would be kind of neat if they were.
Don will forever love April from Affar...
In fanfiction.
Splinter: Well... the Cat Queen/Goddess seems to like him alot....
There you go.

I don't understand because while not crazy like nightwatchersfanfgirl your still in love with Raphael and it would seem if he was real you wouldn't hesitate to go after the guy or turtle or erm turtle guy.:P
Nope, can't. I'm married. I'm actually glad they don't exist, cos then he'd hafta deal with nuts like NWG and ROG....:dead:
As for Don...it is officially said that he has a crush on April in the 2k3 series. From afar he sees her in a different way.
In the comics, I see her as a sort of mother surrogate-which is clear to me in the story when he's trying to talk to the guys about their mom, and he's ignored, it upsets him greatly until he's alone and crying; April finds him and she listened to every word, comforts him ,etc--he then realizes who his mother is, she has taken the place. So thats where I got that.

I don't know which is creepier-- Raphael seeing April as a "mother" figure after he clearly had a thing for her in the first movie (which, multi-colored bandannas and Pizza aside, was VERY Mirage) or Casey trying to convince Raph in Tales #42 that one Olsen Twin is hotter than the other.

So I finally got this issue and while I don't care for the art the splash page of leo vs. complete carnage was cool...once again another issue that would have looked much better in color.
Also the issue about leo and radical I really don't see what the big stink is all they showed them doing is kissing.
Now if they showed what was going on in the tent I'd have been turned off by the issues but I wasn't I quite enjoyed leo's trips around the world.
And it was cool the know he moved to Cali.

Whoa...:o I hope April didn't walk into THAT discussion.

This kinda freaked me out, but it was pretty interesting seeing Leo building a romantic relationship to its highest and then come crashing down all of a sudden..but still kinda freaky :ohwell:

Hey guys, yes I am a dude. I thank you for any comments on the artwork, sorry for those who didn't like it. If you're interested in seeing some of my other artwork, check out my portfolio at www.raisinlove.com or my online comic at www.zombiecommandos.com . It's a post-apocalyptic zombie splatter comic in full colour. The style is different than the one I used in TMNT, although I always work with heavy lines. The reason there was no toning in TMNT is simply because of time constraints. If you look up Tales #9, I did a backup story featuring Casey Jones, with half-tone patterns to give it a gritty vintage look. In Tales 41 I tried to make up for the lack of toning by using more black masses.
I found this forum while looking up feedback online for Tales #41.

I really liked that effect. The lack of tones in the book didn't bother me at all because of it.
Welcome!!!

Welcome Steph! I for one really liked your art and found it very expressive. I liked Leo's and Don's outfits. It was cute that of course Mike was crying.
I liked the art, the story, the writing. Whatever sex Leo or Radical were having, it was pretty damn implicit. I definitely didn't object to this, and I am a person usually find the idea of a Ninja Turtle and a human doing the deed to be pretty nasty and ridiculous.
Yeah what was with the other turtles and Raph had the eyepatch in the flashback bit? I was wondering if all of a sudden they're accepting the Vol.3 Image series as canon/continuity? Don seemed to have himself in a trenchcoat and had shoulder like straps crisscrossed over his upper body. So it made me wonder about the Image series being accepted. But wouldn't Peter Laird have had a fit? How did this pass him? Wouldn't he have vetoed this?
The art in this issue did somwewhat turn me off. The TMNT and sexual relationships I haven't really cared about. But yeah Mikey did it with that one reptile lady in Vol 4 so why should we be surprised, babies too. But Leo and Radical did seem out of left field to me as well.

Future Raph having an eye patch has been Mirage canon for many years, starting with the back-up story in the Michelangelo Christmas Special. It has been used frequently in Mirage stories ever since, most recently in an issue of Tales Vol. 2 itself.

Yeah, Future Raph with the eye-patch in the Mirages pre-dates everything else.

Aye.. Future Raph has had the missing eye in every incarnation except Dreamwave. Just read the secondary story in Michelangelo's Christmas Rescue. He was in a swamp with an eye patch (which was later done as a nightmare in the Cyber Samurai story in Archie). In the Mirage timeline we just don't know how Raph lost his eye like we do in Archie (explosion thanks to Armagon the shark) and Image (explosion..). I just figure it's his destiny. *shrugs* Even in The 2K3 series in "Same As It Never Was" he was missing an eye.

Thank you for your warm welcomes :)
The look of the other turtles was described by Murphy so it's in line with the continuity and has nothing to do with the Image TMNT universe.
Oh I see. Its been awhile since I've seen these stories. With the eyepatch I'm always thinking Image series. Thanks to all.
