As some of you might know Mirage has decided that Vol 4 will be online for free. They decided to place it on wowio.com Of course wowio (a free website sponsered annoyingly by Verizon) has catches:

1: Your email address can't be non-anonymous (a work emai, ISP email, or school email address will work)
2: If you don't have any of those you can sign up by sending them a scan of your ID card
3: Or you can sign up via a credit card (which will be pinged like a penny)
4: It's only for those in the U.S.A

Yes it's a pain to join...but I got on with the help of a friend who graciously got me on via their isp email (thanks again Slash)

Once you get on there are OTHER catches:
1: You can only DL 3 books per day
2: The books are PDF's (so you have to have PDF to read em)

It's all worth it in the end tho..I've found numerous books that I've either been looking for, like issues of Adolescent Radioactive Blackbelt Hamsters :D...I love that series) or books I didn't know existed.

Anyways. Vol 4 has started to be uploaded onto Wowio. I just checked and the first 2 issues are on right now! Can't wait to DL issue 29!

I know several people who haven't. I've read em yea... but I mostly signed on to wowio to get Adolescent Radioactive Blackbelt Hamster books. Altho I had initially found out about it from a star trek news site when they (wowio) added the Gold Key TOS books. And now TMNT vol 4! Now if only they'd add Vol 2 (which I don't have everything of).

Well, the book IS going to be available in print to buy as well. I would think that Mirage would send you samples since you need to be up to date on the canon-- a lot of Tales stories have been inspired by events that took place during the course of Volume 4.

Needless to say, I already read the first 3 issues today! Can't wait for more.

Other than the clearly visible alien invasion, they are actually pretty good.

Jay looks like Howie.

Raptarr is so cool.

Coexistence with aliens is fine for Fast Forward- since by then the Turtles are deceased and it is clearly in the far future. But not while the Turtles have their regular lifetime in the present.

I've only read one of them. Back when Vol. 4 first came out I had no clue about Turtles comics. I saw them on the shelf but I hadn't read vol. 1-3.

I was thinking about looking for the issues. Now I can read them this way first, to see if it's as bad as everyone says before I possibly add the comics to my collection.

Wowio's website says they're planning to go international eventually.

This is what they explain in their FAQ:

Do I have to be a United States resident to sign up to WOWIO?
For now, WOWIO is only available to people living in the United States. Copyright laws vary by country and currently our licensing restrictions limit distribution to U.S. residents.

Read 4-6 this morning.

So far, the only part I dislike would be the "multicolored bandannas being too dorky". I think this would have been a good time to introduce them in Mirage- or if they did not want to, it was still not necessary to mention them.

Seeing as how the comics are in black and white I don't see the need to have mentioned them.

Since it's in black and white, sometimes I imagine that they adopted the multicolored bandannas at one point.:)

I think he put that in there to try to be funny, not to slight the cartoon turtles. After all, the turtles have multi-colored bandannas in the new cartoon and they had them in the movie. If Pete had really wanted, he probably could have had it otherwise.

It was just a joke. I believe it was in one of the letters pages that Pete said he has no problem at all with the multicolored bandannas. I don't know if he prefers the red or not, but he has no problem with the multicolored ones. It was just a joke, and I thought it was funny.

Yea...The comics have ads for Verizon. I haven't seen any other types of ads tho. Also when you DL a book they ask that you click on a smiley face, that apperantly tells Verizon to give em more money or something.

From ninjaturtles.com

TMNT Volume Four issues #1-7 are now available for legal download at www.WOWIO.com!

WOWIO is currently only available for U.S. residents and to sign up for their free downloading service (limited to three books per day) you'll need a private e-mail address (i.e. you can't use major providers such as Google, Yahoo, G-Mail, etc.), a scan of a personal I.D. or a valid credit card. See their site for more details.

We're looking into international options to provide the books for free download to everyone outside of the U.S., but due to the complexities of international copyright law, we may not have much success on that end. If all else fails, we'll post low res JPGs of the issues on our site like the issues from Volume One (currently linked at the bottom of the Comics page).

The plan is to post issues #8-14 in February, issues #15-21 in March and issues #22-28 in April. In May, all-new issues will begin with TMNT #29, and from there, a new book will be posted as often as Peter, Jim and Eric can complete them!

May?! ARGH!!!! :o

Ok, this is lame. Murphy said the art for the first two issues was complete. If that's the case, and we're not going to see them until May anyways, they might as well just sell/solicit through Diamond!

But I think Diamond has a set of fees and minimum orders/print runs, things of this nature (though granted I know little about the specific logistics of any of this, but I know enough to know that it's not as simple as you suggest) that all, still, leave Laird with a book that loses money. I think the general idea is to put the book online, then do a very small print run that just the niche fans will buy... then he only gets pure profit and little, if any, unsold books. In theory.

Not saying I agree with it, but it kind of makes sense to me from a standpoint of, "OK, TMNT Volume 4 doesn't make money, the way it's going it's never going to make money, and I'm not going to try and change the way I do the book so as to have it make money" while still doing the same book he enjoys/enjoyed putting out in Vol. 4 but now in such a way that it won't actually cost him money at the end of the day.

But at any rate, color me completely disinterested in these online TMNT comics. I'll check out the new Vol. 4 issues when they start coming out online, then order the print ones from Mirage or whatever and that's the end of it.

Roseangelo
01-24-2008, 07:07 PM
Oh, I have no doubt it's about money. But Peter's statement/announcement about the online comics only said he didn't like Diamond's deadlines OR the huge amount of time between finishing the comic and seeing the finished book in a store, which Diamond's deadlines require. Waiting five months for a virtually complete comic book does nothing to beat either of those complaints. It'd just be nice if he could be frank and honest.

Mind you, I have absolutely no issues with the comics not being in stores, as their presence embarrasses me as a fan.

I thought the multi-colored bandannas looked all right in the live action movie. It makes it hard for people to ID the turtles otherwise unless they have their weapons on them constantly. In the black and white comic it doesn't matter one way or the other, but when you get to the larger TMNT media, it kind of makes sense to try to differentiate the turtles, especially marketing wise. It gives the parents more justification to buy all four of the turtles for the kids, instead of going "wait, they all look the same anyway".

How true.

In the black and white comic it doesn't matter one way or the other, but when you get to the larger TMNT media, it kind of makes sense to try to differentiate the turtles, especially marketing wise.

Strictly marketing-wise. There's simply no good reason for the Turtles to go about making fashion statements to each other with brightly, different colored bandannas... they're a ninja clan -- albeit, a small one, but one nonetheless. Also, my old Feudal Japan history might be a little muddy, but I'm fairly certain ninja clans weren't worried about differentiating themselves from one another... in fact, this would be robbing themselves of a vital bit of possible misdirection in battle, which is the name of the game. Four ninja that look alike, all wearing red bandannas blending in and out of the dark trying to kill you... yeah, you wouldn't know what the **** is going on, and that's the idea.

But I don't dwell on it too much in the spinoff universes -- only in the original, Mirage source material were they ever actually portrayed as real ninja... raised, trained, and conditioned for the sole purpose of assassinating Oroku Saki. The spinoff universes, their "ninja" training is just window dressing, so who cares what bandanna color they have.

Just read number 7.

What is the purpose of the Superhero Turtles? And why would they turn Splinter into Slither in the cartoon version?

They left us in a MAJOR cliffhanger at the end. Won't spoil it, other than for now most people would think the true explanation would be something much simpler that happens in real life often.

Well, I finally got around to creating a Wowio account and getting the v.4 comics. I already have the print copies of them, but it's nice to have them in digital form as well. I just have to say that I am quite impressed with the scan quality on these things. Granted, I've only skimmed through a couple issues, but everything looked crystal clear and in perfect condition. The pages look like they were actually completely flat when scanned which is not as easy to do as you might think. I only bring this up because I bought the ~500 issue Amazing Spider-man dvd that has every issue in pdf format, but the quality of some of those comics is rather poor. And sometimes the scans aren't flat, so the pages look slightly arched. Not so with these Wowio v.4 comics. I just had to share that with everyone.

So... with that said, does anyone have any recommendations on good comics or books to download from Wowio? I've added ARBBH to my queue, but I haven't heard of most of the other comics on Wowio. I'm just curious if there are any true gems to be found, and they don't have to be just comics. Anything you find on Wowio that is really good is fair game. All I ask is that if you recommend a series, please tell us something about it as I'd rather not waste time on a series I know I wouldn't like since Wowio only lets us download 3 items a day. Thanks, dudes!

EDIT:
I have no idea why they threw the Superhero Turtles in there.
I think the only reason they were thrown in there was because someone at Mirage (Peter? Kevin?) had come up with superhero turtle designs years back and Peter wanted to use them for something. All in all, I thought it was a fun tangent.

Sure as heck wouldn't have been Kevin. He left Mirage back in 99 to focus on Heavy Metal comics. He and Peter don't get along one bit. It's a bit sad really.

Anyways....other than TMNT and ARBBH I've mostly been downloading parody books. The Stupidman books are really funny as is the Sewage Dragoon (parody of Savage Dragon). As for non parody books get The Last Warring Angel series, brand new this year. There's also a good graphic novel on Geronimo. In the way of non comics I've only downloaded a medical journal on Thyroid Disorders. I've got a Da Vinci book in my queue tho. I might get those books on magic that they recently added...

I've also discovered a way to DL 6 books a day but it only really works if your on the west coast. Wowio appears to be on Mountain Time and they don't take into account the other time zones. So for me I can DL comics in the afternoon and in the evenings after 10pm

I was under the impression that the original super-turtle sketches had been done a long time ago but were never used, so it could have been Kevin who drew the original sketches (which is what I was referring to). But I think it was probably Peter just because it seems more in line with his style and interests.

Thanks for all the Wowio suggestions! I'll probably avoid the Savage Dragon parody, as I was never too interested in him, but all the other suggestions sound pretty good. If I find anything else I like, I'll be sure to post it here too. Keep the suggestions coming, though, if anyone else has any more.

The part about how the Turtles say how much they miss Splinter totally broke my heart. IMHO they got rid of him too early.

April's mystery has me on the edge of my seat.

Otherwise, I am not so sure about the direction it has taken. Could be worse- but could be better. I would have kept Splinter alive AND with the Turtles. Most of the storylines would have worked with him around.

Though evidently Peter does own all creative rights, from that last Kevin Eastman interview a while back we do know he does retain some degree of rights and royalties. In fact, he seemed to be downright insulted at the implication that he "sold out" all his rights to Laird, when that wasn't the case. I believe he dropped some F bombs to that end.

So in the TMNT's case, Anakin would end up being...Oraku Saki who would be like "you were right turtles, being a psychopath villain wasn't cool. Tell your sister...you were right."

"April's close enough...right? Tell April, you were right."

I'm going to make a book of them, but I was wondering before I do this if there are any plans of Mirage to make a TPB of v.4?

There hasn't been any sort of official announcement as yet, but I think it's going to happen soon. With Volume 4 returning hopefully in May and with it reportedly being the conclusive chapter(s?) to the volume, it could be collected for the 25th Anniversary. But this is just me thinking out loud, nothing's been officially called yet.

What's an Ultrom?

It's an ultra Utrom. It's like an Utrom with superpowers. Like Krang, y'know? ;)

I was more imagining an Utrom in an android suit outfitted to look like Ultraman.

When did the issues go up in the past months? Beginning? Mid? Late?

Do you think they might add volumes 1-3 to WOWIO?

They've generally been released in the middle of the month. Volume 1 is currently available for viewing on ninjaturtles.com I am not sure if they'd release volumes 1 and 2 on Wowio....perhaps they will. Vol 3 was done by Image and is not canon. Only Mirage stuff is canon.

Mirage should put Tales Vol. 2 up on Wowio as well.

Guess he just let out a little spoiler...but rumor is that they are the Ultimate Universe version of an utrom. That's what came to mind when I saw that.

As far as trades people would like, I'd like to see the Archie comics put into trades, especially the Future Shark thing. I remember liking that one. Mainly because as far as volume 1 goes, I've gotten impatient and have decided that I'll just try to find the single issues, but I haven't started looking for any Archie yet.

I've never gotten to read Volume 2. That's an awesome idea.

I do know that Vol. 1 Collected Book 1 is going back into print next year, but I haven't heard of anything else prior to Volume 4 and Tales Vol. 2 that has yet to come out.

Not quite. What Mirage is printing is not a true representation of the original comic books as they will all be retoned/relettered/re-everythinged. Especially #8, which is being completely replaced by a new story.

If you want the original comics, hunt for the original collected book or grab the First graphic novels on the cheap.

Every last issue? Why? Is it that rumor that there is really that much bad blood between Laird and Eastman?

I still think I'm enough of a fanboy to get an edited Book One. Partially because I don't have the Raph, Don, or Mike issues at all, and I already have the First graphic novels and a few of those issues.

Every issue that Eastman and Laird worked on. I don't think he's allowed to change the art of the other artists, but who knows... I would personally argue that he shouldn't be allowed to change the work of something he only did 50% of unless the person who did the other 50% gave permission.

I don't know what Peter's motives for do this are exactly, but I think it's possible that he honestly thinks that what he's doing is the "right" thing, because it's "fixing" all of the errors and inconsistencies in the old books. And he obviously doesn't like to use tones anymore, as evidenced in the current books.

I really hope he'll come around some day...

This has nothing to do with Volume 4, only Volume 1. You can see the differences between Vol. 1 #1 here (http://www.geocities.com/roseangelo/history).

The old thread is gone. So a new thread!

Wowio.com was down for almost 2 months while they updated their system. Now people around the world can get the books available there. So for all you foreign readers you can now download for free TMNT vol 4 issues 1 - 29. Issue 30 will no doubt be up shortly.
