I don't know if there has been a thread on this, but not one I've seen, since at least 2005. Even if it did exist, it must have not lasted very long. I am curious to finally find out which is your favorite style of tmnt bandanas. Now, by this I dont mean multi-colored vs red (although feel free to include that in your preference) But more of a length preference. Personally I liked how the bandanas looked in the Mirage comics and the old toon. I've gone back and fourth before, and I probably will more, but theres just something I love about how they looked when short. What do you guys prefer?

hmmmmm....I don't like them in the old toon cause they are so short they stick out in points from their heads. I like the longer tattered version from the comics, They look worn like the guys have grown with them it just adds detail when they look like that

A lot of the Mirage comics had the bandannas pretty short like the OT. My personal preference would be a little longer than the OT, but not as long as 2k3/FF. The colors don't matter too much to me, but I would have preferred it if the original red bandannas had been either blue, purple, or black. I just don't like the color red that much. And on the tips, I like slant edges ( \ ). Square edges ( [ ) and scissored edges ( > ) come in last for me.
But honestly, the style of bandannas don't matter that much to me so long as they have them.

I like the visual of the tails of the bandana waving in the wind if they were outside, seems more dramatic or something.
I like the length in the movies, but color doesn't matter so much to me either. The red was cool and Badass looking and the colors have the personality

I like the bandanas they wear in the original comic and the Ot,i prefere the colored once instead of the just red ones mainly cause easier recognition and colors match theyr personalities. I also wondered what was up with the red bandanas when i was smaller and thought they were just to lazy coloring all the different colors in some comics :tlol:

The all red bandanas were the original concept, Color came later...

I like the mask tails being able to blow in the wind - it's also great for supporting dynamic poses and animation. Maybe not quite as long as 2k3... nowadays I tend to draw them sort of like the OT tails (not a ribbon of cloth like 2k3), except for much longer - at least long enough to touch their shells. 2k7 wasn't a bad length, but they are ribbonlike.
Also, I agree with The Shelf - angled cutoffs are my favorite. I don't have a particular hatred for them being squared off ([) but having 'em dovetailed (>) looks really tacky to me for some reason.
Though my least favorite masks by far are the Next Mutation ones. Raph's ragged mask is too gimmicky and cliche for me, and the under-the-chin stuff on a couple of the others just looks weird.

Agree about the Next Mutation masks, Masked. They were terrible, and I never understood why they had them wrapped under the chin like they had toothaches or something. My preference is for longer mask tails. The whole "blowing in the wind" look rocks.

The blowing in the wind thing does rock, but I also kinda like the Next Mutation look as well, b/c it's very different from what I've seen before.

I think I prefer shorter length for the bandannas. Sure, the longer length bandannas make for a dramatic picture like a superhero's cape in the wind, but at the same time, the long bandanna doesn't seem very practical. A foot ninja could use it to yank their head back, and then they'd have a pretty bad time.:(

I also really like the dramatic effect of the bandanas blowing through the wind while they're running through rooftops in the middle of the night:D...or something like that. The slant edges are definitely best, but i dont mind square at all...but sweet jests (>) looks soooo bad. I've only noticed it in fast forward, although maybe its popped up other places..but god..it just looks terrible.

I like the masks with the four colors.
I like the angled ends.
About the length- I like them shorter for the younger Turtles, longer for the older Turtles. Like when the Turtles first got their teenage masks, the ends would have been just a bit longer than the Toddler Turtle masks (like in the OT). But by the time they are 15, they should get masks with longer ends that sway in the wind- like in 2k3.

I like the length from the first movie and about every version of the TMNT with similar length the best. However, the longer and shorter versions don't bother me. I didn't even really think about it until this thread.
As for color or all-red... I think both have their appropriate places. It doesn't really matter much to me since most of what I see of the TMNT is in B&W anyway.

The length they appear in the comics, which is a happy medium of sorts. I don't care for the real short ties, but rediculously long isn't good eighter.By rediculous I mean, the bandana ties shouldn't reach the ground man. lol.

In this order:
Comic book red, Movie/2k3 long tattered colors, OT neat and tidy ribbons.

personaly I like the mask length and style of the old toon Red Sky bandannas. They where medium length and went to about the edge of the upper ridge of the turtles shells and where long enough where the flapped in the breaze but didn't flow like if it where a banner. And I also liked how the eyes holes where cut angularly so the you could see the green skin around the turtles eyes. It made them look both more mature and tough but humanised as well because you could see their pupils.
I never really cared for the urber short bandanna tails in the old toon because they stuck up on ends and looked choppy at times. And the new toon although I like the longer length of the turtles masks I think they would serve as a hinderance in battle (as some one else mentioned) and sometimes they just look way to long. How they do in some FF episodes where it dangles down to their belts.

I like them multicolored, long, and ribbony, cut at an angle. I have a preference for Raph's mask in particular being a bit tattered. It may not be practical to have longer tails, but neither is hair, or long rabbit ears for that matter. The boys are skilled enough to work with it.

I almost brought up the Red Sky bandanna's and I'm glad you did. Those one's really did look awesome. And wow, do they really reach the belts in some of the FF episodes? I had'nt noticed...geeze.

Oh yeah, the detail of the green around the eyes. I like how the style was patterned after the movie Turtles. it gave it a realistic twist to the look. because, come on, how can the holes be perfectly cut to the eyes? Especially since they could easily stretch a little anyway.

I liked them in the first movie, the tails were long but not in your face, more like shoulder length which is good. You hardly even notice them. Raph's was tucked thru his hat and hidden by his coat. Many times they were laying naturally hiding under the inside of their shell, over their backs, just wherever they fell.
Then here's TMNT2 and BAM they're in your face, longer and brighter X.X BLAH!
Honestly they're pretty impractical period. What use are they other than looking cool. They're not hiding an identity.

Watch Invasion of the Body Jacker when the turtles are wearing those gaudy multi-colored formal suits, their bandannas where ridiculously long in that episode...like down to their butt long. :|
Also I would like to say that I like the turtles bandannas to be multi-colored and crisp and nice looking, rather than tattered and worn. Only after a harsh battle do I think the bandannas should look worn and shredded. I also like the ends to be this (<) shaped rather than square shapped or slanted shaped.

I think they should all ditch the bandanas and get some of those big Gucci sunglasses like the celebrities. Just kidding... I like longer, tattered, multi-colored, angle cut ended bandanans.

If those weer indeed cloth what use were they? they offer no protection at all.
TMNT movies has thick stuffed leather pads giving them much protection. IMO...those make sense, even if those aren't really ninja - turtles have thin weak looking joints. they can use that protection

I would just like to say that the bandanas in the first 3 movies looked like rolled up bath towels tied around their huge heads.
Loved the bandanas from TMNT though. I liked how they didn't wrap skin tight around the top of the head. It looked real because a round head would cause that look

Liked the ones in the movies. I found it gave the Turtles more character with the longer bandanas.
And I also like the elbow and knee pads from the movies as well. The different colored pads, after exposure to the Turtles via the movies, seemed kind of corny.

oh I don't know I think the colored paddings looked alright on the turtles in the old toon, especially during Red Sky arc. Just look at this clip of them in Red Sky:

I think the colored paddings compliment the bandannas, and you get a nice look at their red Sky bandannas, which I think are pretty badass.
And...I kniow i'm going to piss some NT purests off, but I think the colored handles on the NT's weapons is kinda corny looking. Especially Don's purple tape on his Bo. :|
Scandia

I like the different colored handles of the weapons. They are not as over the top as the letters are. They may not be as absolutely necessary as the different colored bandannas, but they are more subtle than letters.

Maybe the different coloured weapons is not as bad as the belts (I didn't mind the belts as a kid), but I do think that Don's vibrant purple wrapped bō is a bit ridiculous-looking and overkill.
I like the bandannas in the live-action movies because ... I like looking at colourful things. I think it's important for kids, too, which is why the faded colours of the new movie irked me a little. But I agree that the super-vibrant bandannas are kind of silly in practice. So are the long, ribbon-like or tattered shaped bandannas (which were my favourite for a while). I guess in the end, I like the Red Sky/Mirage shape ... the tails aren't very long but they blow in the wind they end in a point (although that makes no sense).
I still like the different coloured bandannas best, but if I had to see them all the same, I'd rather see black bandannas, not red ones.
As for the wrist/knee/elbow pads, I like the thick leather pads of the movies. But Buslady, I don't think they designed it that way because they knew turtles have weak joints ... ;)

I agree that the purple bo is kind of bleh. After all, the bo as a weapon isn't usually wrapped anyway. The blue swords and red sai are cool... orange chucks are pushing it, but appropriate for Mike.

If you draw the Turtles with black masks, you should put it up on DA. :)

It's a tie between Movie 1 and TMNT 2007. I like both colors; basic red and colored differences. I've always wondered what it would look like if the original movie had the red masks, but that's just me.

The movie belts were dang cool, though the tied ones are fine to me. The letters were fun in context of the OT but are too hokey for my tastes. I think the movie belts were more directly based on the comic book belts, which do indeed look like they could actually hold weapons. I'd just prefer that they be closer to the hips/waist like in the comics and not the nearly chest level thing that happened with the suits.
I second the confusion on Don's bo. I bet he could come up with some kind of sleeve that could hold it on his back (lined with cloth? Could work if his bo were wrapped like it is in the cartoons; the two cloth surfaces could cling to each other a bit), but just the belt isn't going to do it - especially since his shell is a hard, curved surface.

I've always wondered how Leonardo from the old toon was able to wear his swords on his back with out A) and sheaths to hold them in, they where just kept low on his back and B) with out a strap going over his front to hold them in place. Or for that manner how he could sit down with two blades strapped low on his back like that.
Or how Michelangelo in any incarnation could keep his nunchucks in place with out them slipping off, for a weapon like his wouldn't he need holsters to keep them in?
Revan
02-22-2008, 08:37 AM
Now that we are on this subject, I can't see how Don's bo could stay in his belt either. In the cartoons and 2007 movie, wouldn't he need a shoulder strap like Leo to keep his staff from wobbling and sliding out all the time. With a curved shell and a single belt pressing on the staff, I doubt it would stay secure.
