Why is this issue $175? Is it really worth that much in that condition?

Thats weird. It shouldn't be worth that much. A book like that should be worth about 7-8 bucks. Who knows, when you enlarge the picture, the cover price says $1.75. Can't really say if the person made a mistake.

I guess they figure that since issue one usually sells for up to $3000 that this one would sell for $175.... :P

Even if it was graded a 10 by CGC, I wouldn't pay that much for it.

no that issue isn't even worth like $10.00

Yea, thats a bit outrageous... he could probably get $1.75 for it (maybe $2) in that condition...but I guess it doesn't hurt to dream...

I just sold one of those in a lot with about about ten issues for a little over three (perhaps not quite as good condition).

I guess there are still people out there that think comics are an investment.

It's a great issue no doubt, but not worth that. Either this seller made a mistake, or got some bad information!

I thought Year of the Turtle was pretty decent (knowing nothing of the Forever War) but I would never pay that much for those three issues.

I picked up all 3 Year of th Turtle issues last month for $25 bucks in excellent condition. Still haven't read them, yet.

When I read the thread title I thought it was $1.75...:P Although looking at other things this joker is selling, it looks like the $175 isn'y a joke.

I wouldn't buy anything graded by the CGC. The prices on those things are always ridiculous, for something that should be read and enjoyed.:x

Holy Jesus...That's outrageous. I picked up the four First Volume 1 graphic novels in near-mint condition for $50.

I think the seller is just misinformed about TMNT comics. He's selling it as a #1; he obviously doesn't realize it's #19.

I think it might be time for me to sell my set of Year Of the Turtle...holy crap!

Yeah, overpriced tmnt comics pop up every once in awhile. Sometimes a reprint pops up claiming to be an original, too.

Should have sold to me. A month ago I was fully willing to plunk down $100 for Year of the Turtle #2 and #3... but instead a low-key auction popped up that I won that contained the entire Archie series, including Year of the Turtle 1-3 for $80.

I didn't realize these were so in demand. I've actually debated selling my entire set of Archie TMNTs including mini series on Ebay, but I'm trying to sell other stuff before dipping into comics (a big chore). Nice deal you got there though!

Because the seller is a moron.

Or he thinks he can dupe someone into buying it for that price.

Or he didn't bother to do any research on what comics are worth, in which case, yeah, not a wise move.

I saw that auction several months back... and I gotta say I laughed my rear end clean off. I almost informed that seller that they were smoking crack, but then I figured, hey, they probably know they're smoking crack. Why else would they be trying to get that much for such a common issue?

DER... for crack money!

Whitewolf89

Well, they're DEFINITELY smoking SOMETHING if they think anyone with any common sense at all will pay THAT much for these! THIS is something that would be snapped up by someone with more money that sense, as my dear departed Grandma would say.

I mean, I love the Turtles myself, but SHEESH! If I even THOUGHT about [paying THIS much for a comic, my family would PROBABLY have me committed for life! As it is, my mom thinks I'm a bit crazy for paying $10.00 for a comic of ANY kind (which I did for a copy of "Elfquest" #4, 2nd printing awhile back).

I will say, though, that's probably the finest, best issue of TMNT ever made. If there were an issue worth that much on its own merit (not because of what order it was published in), that issue would be worth the $175.

Sometimes when I buy single issues I think to myself, "am I really going to pay this much for a comic?" If it's available in a trade, then I just get the trade. But otherwise, if it's an issue I really want to read, I guess I'm willing to spend the money. But I'd say that typically $10 might be my limit. Like I wouldn't pay a load of money for the older issues of Ultimate Spider-Man just for the sake of being a completing a collection or something.

I've spent over $100 on single comics in the past...not very often though. 1 or 2 times. I, however, have no problem spending $10 on a comic if I really want it. Yeah, I am crazy.

$10 for something that might be pretty hard to find seems almost reasonable to me (keep in mind that's coming from a comic fan, I'm sure someone more "normal" would probably think that's weird).

If you're a big enough fan though and have the cash, I guess $100 every so often might be okay. But at $100 I don't think I'd ever take the thing out of the bag. Must have been pretty old comics, right? After the 90's prices on back issues got more reasonable. How much does the first appearance of Gambit usually go for now? I thought I remembered it being ridiculously expensive at one point.

I'll spend ANYTHING on a comic book - if it's worth it. $100? Definetely $1000. Sure. $10,000? If only I had that much money to blow.

But it's gotta be truly rare and I have to believe that is the best price I'm going to find. I've learned the hard way not to jump on the first deal I find. Every now and then I still pull a boner, just a few months ago I got caught up in a bidding war on Ebay for a mini-comic I didn't think I could find anywhere else. Later that same day, after I paid about $35, I found it for just $3 at the original publisher's own website! Who would have thought he'd still have copies 20 years later?!?

But on the other hand, I was searching for the first 10 issues of another mini-comic and could only seem to find them from the same dealer for about $8-25 a pop. I later found all 10 issues in one lot on another site for $24.95. GLAD I WAITED!

Even when you're spending hundreds, it can still be a bargain. Research everything and exhaust every option available to you.

The two I paid this much for were Incredible Hulk #2 and Fantastic Four #12..both from the 60s, so yeah, they were pretty old. I did take them both out of the plastic and read them. I passed up a TMNT #1 for $100 before..now I wish I hadn't.

I'm not sure how much I'd want to own an original TMNT #1. Was this one of the first printings? I have a reprint from the 90's and the colorized trade and I'm pretty happy with those. I think I'd rather buy a bunch of other turtles comics over time with the money that a copy of the first issue would cost.

Thing is, something like TMNT #1 (first print) is as much an investment as it is wanting to enjoy a great story. I bought my first print #1 for $100, and as much money as that was then, and as much other stuff as I could have bought with that money instead, if I wanted to I could sell the book now for 10x what I spent and buy a whole lot more crap with that money.

I don't mind spending a lot of money on an item that I know is going to hold its value and possibly gain value. If I ever need the cash or just don't want it any more, at least I won't lost money on the initial purchase.

Yeah, it was an original, but this was in 1993. I've collected all of the reprints over time, which I don't usually do for comics..but for TMNT there was always either a new story, a new cover, or some kind of new art which made it appealing to me. But it would be really hard for me to fork over $1k for a comic, which is why I may never get a TMNT #1 or a Hulk #1.

Some people are convinced that because it's an old collector's item, that it must be sold at least 150. I wouldn't buy that, I'd rather save up for a realistic Turtle Costume :)

You can sell pretty much anything for any price on ebay, so good for him if someone is willing to pay that price for it. Anyone desperate to complete his collection and hasn't bothered to look around much , would probably be happy to pay this amount. But considering the fact that I found this issue myself for 5$ in a regular comic shop a few years ago, I doubt anyone would have much difficulty finding a better price.
