I'm not really interested in this, but the picture struck me as interesting. This looks to be in a generic, wrinkled plastic bag, but doesn't CGC put all their comics in a plastic, vacuum-sealed vault, complete with a grade, description, filled with inert argon gas, and a sprinkling of holy water?

It's been a while since I've been "in the know" with comics, so I wasn't sure if things have changed or not with CGC...

I thought CGC packaging was like "We've shrnk-wrapped this so you can't read it anymore! Pay us!"

If you mean that comics should be read and not just sealed and displayed, I agree. Even if I'm reading them while wearing surgical gloves:P

But this is what I understood CGC to be: http://cgi.ebay.com/Fantastic-Four-71-CGC-9-4-NM-PEDIGREE-COMIC-NR_W0QQitemZ330213390634QQihZ014QQcategoryZ32731QQ cmdZViewItem

Is this the only way CGC does things, or is there a basic pkg that I'm not aware of?

It says CGC b/c probably thats how much its worth in that condition but never got it sealed. Kinda hard to believe its worth that price though.

I was under the impression that you have to wrap your comics yourself when you send them to the CGC people. They probably provide that label as an official seal of approval kind of thing, but I don't think they provide anything other than an official grade. Perhaps you can ask them to send it back to you in a special kind of wrapping, but I'm sure you have to pay extra for it.

As the owner of a few CGC books, I can tell you that this most definately NOT CGC graded...they are probably assuming the grade it would/could get

The only other possibility is that they got the book graded, then removed it from the case, and are now referring to the grade it had (even this is not a absolute as it is VERY easy to knock a book down in grade due to this removal, esp. in the high grades- such as from 9.6 to 9.4 and so on)

I was under the impression that you have to wrap your comics yourself when you send them to the CGC people.

All you do is send in your book and they provide all the rest (for the price you pay). You just have to securely mail it in, and they provide all the encapsulation materials and the grade and mail it back to you.

Pretty much. I hate the CGC.

What's really sad is when I see trading cards CGCed on eBay. You know, like the dime a dozen TMNT movie cards. Right...

And looking at it again, it's not even a first print.

Rose, how do you know its not? I thought newsstand versions were considered the same printing as direct versions. I know this comic was reprinted years later with Victor Gorelick's picture in that space and sold thru kaybee toys.

You're correct on both counts. However, the real first print of the book didn't say "1st Edition Collector's Issue!" on the cover. The first print didn't have any extra text on the front cover. See here (http://www.flickr.com/photos/roseangelo/457215553/in/set-72157600071319221/).

Ohh ok. Thanks for clearing that up. Makes me wonder if I have a reprint!
