Though I'd put the 1990 movie as second, I think. Regardless of what happened to Donatello, Mike was great in that movie. He was lighthearted and silly without being stupid or ineffective in battle.
OT Mikey wasn't bad either. He was a pizza addict, but he didn't take crap either.

Classic toon Michaelangelo. Especially during the Red Sky arc, because during this part in the series (or in most incarnations of the turtles) Michaelangelo is a capable and serious turtle who isn't just there making up the mumbers but holds an important position in the team.

Am I the only one that thinks that 2k3 Mikey is similar to Movie Mikey (in ALL the movies)? I dunno why I voted, but 2k3. Other than his overly imature caracterization in FF, I've thouroughly loved Mikey in everything he was in. Maybe I shoulda voted classic cartoon, since that's how I first loved the character... He always was my favorite Turtle, with Raph as a close second.

I put 2k7 movie. He is not obnoxious in the most recent movie at all. In fact, he is very helpful to the family. He shows his youthfulness without being a pain in Splinter's neck.
1987 Mikey would be next. At the very beginning, he was a good contender to be my favorite- but Leo became the winner soon.

Either 2007 movie or 2003 series (even though I've only seen the first half of season one). In both cases he's goofy, but not quite as dumb as he was in the original cartoon.
I think the Mirage comics Michelangelo tends to be an afterthought a lot of the time, but I read that Tales story about Klunk recently and I thought that was a good story for the character.

Mine would be:
90's movie trilogy
Mirage comics
Archie comics
2007 movie
In these verisons, Mikey's lighthearted and occasionally goofs off, but he doesn't come across as an idiot (Well...okay, so 2007 Mikey is a little bit of an airhead in a couple of scenes, but he still is serious and kicks butt when the time comes, and can easily handle his own)...nor is he ever ineffective in battle.
I can't comment on Old Toon Mike, since I don't really remember what he was like (aside from the pizza obsession thing).
I have yet to get my hands on the Image comics (working on it).
And the 2K3 version of the character has grown to irritate and disappoint me over the seasons. He's cowardly, whiney, unfocused when he needs to be, very immature, constantly needs to be saved in battle, and never really seems to learn or grow from his experiences while the rest of his family does. If anything, he seems to de-mature in the 2k3 toon and come across as more and more foolish. I'm being harsh, but I honestly am not a fan of how his character was handled in this show...

Well, about the NT Michaelangelo bwing smarter than the OT Michaelangelo, I can't say I agree with that, he was more aggressive/serious in the OT and maybe a slight bit better at problem solving when a situation laid on him.
NT Michaelangelo does need saving sometimes, but so do the others, and every one of them, including Michaelangelo, has had at least one occassion where they've saved all their brothers at once, and all are equal contributors.

he stayed just a little longer at Donatello's "grave" than the others.

I agree with you on all points mentioned I love Mikey in the new toon but sometimes I can't help but feel aggravated as a viewer when I'm watching him on the show. Eighther he is fooling around whe he shouldn't be, or he is running his mouth during a time that should be for observation, or he is taking flack from his brothers or people around him and he doesn't stand up for him self. What is kind of dissapointing about how Mikey is portrayed his is the way he is perseeved on the show by the other characters, almost all characters that come across him thinks he is annoying or show some signs of exesperation with him. It's like no one sees him as anything but a nusance that has to be put up except for a few people, and even they act like they are some what just humouring him than anything else. I guess what bugs me is that Mikey doesn't really have any equal relationships with any one on the show; he is eighther annoying pest of a brother, hyper active aquantence, or star struck admirier.
Even with people that like him it seems like they are rolling their eyes at him. I've watched this show a friend. She pointed out that Mikey is in desperate need of a friend who isn't his three brothers. And I agree. I think Mikey needs to meet some who isn't a disiplined warrior, or science guy or badass, I don't think Mikey really indentifies with these types ( and i don't hink these types "get" him), and unfortunately thats all the turtles ever seem to come across. I think Mikey would benefit with some one to indentify with on a equal basis who has the same interests and personality as him.

OT Mikey wasn't bad he didn't take crap either.
It is funny that you say this Masked Ninja, that Michaelangelo doesn't take crap. I have heard other people say that they like OT Mike because he gets pissed off as well. But is he really some one who stands up for him self? On a website called TMNT Dissected there is an article about OT Michaleangelo and the article describes Michaelangelo in the old toon as a doormat. In fact some of the articles theorise that Michaelangelo's role on the team is the "whipping boy" that every uses to make them selves feel superior, here is the article:
http://www.geocities.com/tmntdissected/mike.htm
Does any one agree with this article?
Personaly, even though some of the aspects in the article rings true (like Micaelangelo being looked down on, and him not being as dumb as people make out to be) I don't quite agree that old toon Michaelangelo is a doormat. I think between the two Michaelangelo's OT Mike is more likey to get angry and stand up to his brothers (or at least let them know they are ticking him off) than NT Mike is. Watching the two cartoon version of Michaelangelo I think 2k3 Mike is sort of more of a doormat than OT Mike. I don't know on a whole I feel that NT Mike tends to get victimised and looked down on by his brothers than OT Mike, but that could be in part because their personalites are so diffrent.

OT mike is actually much more competant. Although the theme slaps the "party dude" lable on him, there is far much more to him in the 87 series than there is in the 03 series and TMNT movie four. He isn't much goofier in the OT than the rest of his brothers.

Michaelangelo in the OT was goofy and the "fun guy" but he could also be serious and responciable too when the situation called for it instead of always tring to make light of a situation. What i like about Ot Michaelangelo is that even though he was the easy going guy he could show other emotions other than happy or "over enthusiasm" he actually reacted to things and events around him and frequently showed concern, distress, depression (very rare), and even anger and hurt. He was actually rather sencetive and that made him sympathatic, he wasn't just happy-go-lucky (although admitedly he was like that often). In other words he wasn't detached from what was going on around him and reacted to it and was involved. Often times in the more serious mediums I feel they make Mikey to detached from the more serious stuff and try too hard to make him "comic relief" to off set the darker events which makes him seem detached from what is going on by trying to cracking jokes, making it seem that is all there is to his character.
OT mike is actually much more competant. Although the theme slaps the "party dude" lable on him, there is far much more to him in the 87 series than there is in the 03 series and TMNT movie four. He isn't much goofier in the OT than the rest of his brothers.

For every step forward, he takes two steps back. Whenever we finally see him show signs of maturity, the next episode has him right back where he was before, an idiot. Look for yourself.

03-25-2008, 02:24 AM
well I ment why do you think Mikey from the 80's cartoon has more to him than Mikey in this cartoon? Was mikey from the 80's cartoon really that much more mature and likable? The cartoon that comes on 4Kids is the only Mikey that I've ever known (other than a live action show I kinda remember when I was a kid) and I don't think he's that bad, so I was pretty suprised when I came on here and saw fans seemed dissaticfied with him. By contrast alot of people seem to like Mikey in the 80's cartoon so I was curious if he had better qualites to him than the current Mikey, or if he had a diffrent relationship with his brothers that wasn't "annoying brother" like he does now, because I notice that seems to be a complaint with some fans that he's an annoying brother? :-?
Sage Ninja
03-26-2008, 12:46 AM
Well I think it is pretty subjective on whether or not Michaelangelo from the OT is more mature and likable than in the current toon. I don't think OT Michaleangelo is better liked by fans so much as he seems to fit the context of the old toon series better than new toon Mike does in the context of his. The show in the 80's, if you are unaware, was considerablely more light hearted and humourous than any other version of the turtles that has been shown. The role in the new toon that Mikey has been designated as is the comic relief to off set the more serious and grittier aspects of the shows plots and Raph, Leo and Don's personalites.
In the old toon the show it self was already comedic and humourous so it didn't really need to force Michaelangelo into the role as comic relief (although he frequently was) because the show was already funny on it's own, which allowed Michaelangelo's character to be intergrated into the plots more and given equal importance to the other turtles and "flow" better with the shows themes, since he didn't have to "off set" anything. And it's easier to accept and reconise OT Michaelangelo's good qualites and accomplishments. In the new toon since it's more serious and mature I think the veiwers naturally have higher expections of the characters in them which Mikey sometimes falls a little short. I mean Neutrino pretty much said it, when ever Mikey is given a chance to mature and take a step foward the writers don't let him out of his designated spot of "comic relief" by having him take a two steps back. Because it's better and adds much needed comedy to an other wise to serious kids cartoon to have Mikey scream and act cowardly during dramatic fight scenes, or whine about trivial things and get slapped or be unfocused and get him self in the same fixes or act cocky and get put in his place. So Mikey in the current toon is basically held back all for the sake for a cheap laugh instead of evolving like his brothers, because he is forced to be the balancing factor of serious stuff in the new toon.
But like I said this is all based on personal opinion and others might not feel the same way as I do. And to anwer your question, no Michaelangelo didn't hold the role of annoying little brother in the old toon, the relatiosnhip dynamics with the turtles in the 80's toon is much diffrent than how it is now.
Jelly Bean

As I've said often, I think Mikey was the worst in FF, especially in Return of the Turtle Titan (where he somehow channels my other Childhood hero, Darkwing Duck), and Graduation Day: Class of 2100. I think it's one of those evolution/devolution of the character. In every group we need a light character to take off the tension. I mean, Leo and Raph are pretty much the heavy characters here, so that part falls on Donny and Mikey.
Now, when I think of Mikey, I think that he's the one that's psychologically the youngest one of the group. he's a jokester, he likes to play... but at the same time, he's a hero, and he knows his duty. I think by the time they got to FF, they misconstrued Mikey's playfulness as childishness. I liked the idea of Class of 2100 or whatever it was called, but the underlying problem is it should have been about Raph's anger clouding his judgement. But it was another "Mikey is immature" episode.
You mean Coming Out Of Thier Shells Mickey actually had personality?

of all the turtles I have always liked Michelangelo the least. Just something about his character I really can't identify with, and it is the same in every version I've seen him in. I'm not trying to be mean here but I don't get the point of his character. You have four freaks who are in a lousy situation, and you wonder how they get through the day with out slitting their wrists and this guy bouncing off the walls like monkey. WTF! :x And he's the "dumb" character of the group. I hate "dumb" characters; they are always so patronizing to watch, like the viewer might actually find this character funny. And by far New toon Michaelangelo is the worst not only is he dumb, he is a spoiled cocky brat as well. Other versions of Michaelangelo may have their faults but they where never little immature brats like NT Mike is, and he is cowardly on top of that, he's a ninja and yet every time he goes into battle he is whining and screaming like a girl.
However as much as I dislike Michaelangelo, I voted for old toon Michaelangelo as the lesser of two evils when compared to his modern boy version. I used to think that I disliked OT Michaelangelo but since I've been rewatching the old toon I'm seeing that he is actually not as horrendous as I remember him, he is not as loud and obnoxious as "Mikey" and at least he doesn't talk all the time nonstop and he doesn't try to act funny. He is still not my favorite turtle but at least he is more tolerable than his other version who like to make him a ADHD animaniacs character.

I have a question, does this "Mikey is useless" opinion of yours extend only to the cartoon mediums of the franchise or do you also think that about the comic book versions of him as well? And i would hesitate to call him stupid or dumb, he may not be Masters Degree smart but he isn't a drooling idiot eighther.

Some versions do make him out to be a "drooling idiot" though.
I don't think Mikey is quite so useless in the comics but where in the movies or cartoons they make him a surfer-wanna-be, or a two year old trapped in a teens body, or an obnoxious little brat, the comics seem to forget he is a main character like the other three. He's not annoying or a walking sterotype but he just doesn't have much presence and seems like he just there. He fades into the back ground so badly you kind of forget about him. Mike feels like a filler charcter in the comics, like they added a fourth character to make it four ninjas instead of three. :ohwell:
