View Full Version : Just finished watching Season 5. I Got a ? about Michelangelo's nunchuks

I would have to scan all the episodes again to be sure but I am almost certain he is never shown pulling out or using his nunchuks ever during this season.

Instead when ever he should be pulling out his chuks he pulls out the turtle grappling hook instead. Anyone know the reason behind this?

It is funny seeing this happen. It is most evident in the episode where the turtles fridge is frozen solid and all the turtles weapons are hitting the ice trying to chip it off and Michelangelo is banging a grappling hook against the fridge

I am guessing when the UK started to have their share of Teenage Mutant Ninja "Hero" Turtles, UK told the creators of the show, that they can't allow Mikey using his nunchucks. I don't understand why nunchucks was such a big deal in the United Kingdom.

I don't know when they stopped leaving the 'chucks out of the show, but they were in use in the Red Sky eps. I think CBS had Mike using his grappling hook instead in all of their previous episodes. The syndicated bunch didn't cater to this absurd law though. Editing the episodes didn't come cheap...

I just don't see how the UK could have had so much control of the show. I mean it was an AMERICAN cartoon dammit. It's like telling Toei animation to not make DBZ so bloody and violent and skip out the pervy humor cause Americans may not like it. Who cares??? let Mikey keep his chucks and let the UK worry about how to censor them or cancel the show or whatever.

I think you're underestimating how HUGE TMNT was at the time. No doubt A LOT of money was involved, and as we know all too well today, it's all about money.

i'm pretty sure that Michaelangelo didn't get his chucks back during Red Sky. I distinctly remember him only using the grappling hook.

I think Michaelangelo's nunchucks where fased out during the last few episode in season three, and in season four he started using the grappling hook, and occassionaly twirled his nunchucks (nonthreateningly) every so often. In season five he never even touches his chuckes and in season six I think the animaters permentaly removed them from sight on his person.

Nope. I actually got the first of the German Red Sky DVDs. Mike is seen twirling his nunchaku in there. Was it edited from American TV as well?

Well, that (of course) is another country's DVD. But the US does have a few on the Season 1 DVD. Though likely know that, I'm just making note.

In Germany, all 24 eps of Red Sky are on DVD (and the only classic 'toon DVDs they have so far). It's Deutch-only audio though. I have volume 1, the first five episodes. So, it was really early in the season [that the 'chucks came out]. I don't know if they showed him hitting anything with them though. When I get around to it, I'll grab some screens for you.

The only other Turtle DVDs they have in Germany are the four movies and 12 uncut eps of The Next Mutation (Die Ninja Turtles) spread over 4 volumes... None of that 16-minute BS the UK has.

BTW, there are also some French-only Red Sky eps on DVD.

Interesting and cool, I hope they come out here.
I have all the episodes taped off of cbs from when they first aired, so I'm guessing you don't remember what episode?
I'll just have to go watch my tapes and see.

It's pretty ironic because as the red sky season got darker, they start to take out the chucks so they can make less ninja-ish.

Never understood why the sai's, a katana sword, & and a bo were okay to be seen and used but nunchuks were a no no. I bet some dumb kids must of been doing there Mikey impression and walloped themselves in the head with some chuks and got execs up in arms about it.

Same way the FF cartoon never had the Human Torch and used a small robot because higher ups thhought kids would light them selves on fire to imitate the Human Torch.

I went back and checked and the only thing Mikey uses is his grappling hook. In fact from what I saw his nunchucks are not visible in any of the 24 Red Sky episodes.

Just like I thought, he does not use them, even though we're all used to him having his nunchucks that grapling hook has saved their and others lives countless times.

...No, that was never the reason.

The Human Torch was replaced because, at the time, a completely different company had the license to make a live-action series based off of him. Thus, we got Herbie the Robot.

There was no other reason behind it than that.

Anyways, on topic, I love how, despite the fact that kids linked Michelangelo exclusively to nunchucks during the run of the original series, he used that dang grappling hook for more episodes than he did with the chucks.

i personally think michelangelo should have taken adventage of both the nunchakus and the grappling for each of there most usable situations.

Yeah, imagine if Mikey had to fight some guy one-on-one.

If he misses with the grappling hook, he'd be in big trouble, while with the nunchucks, he wouldn't be in any trouble at all.

Or more like... Nunchucks for close-up fighting and grappling hook for long-distance fighting.

I know the reason the Chuck's weren't used is the same reason the movie didn't get released in the UK for years: It was actually illegal in the UK for a time, even if the film was X rated, to show certain weapons.

Although the lack of chucks in the OT was rediculous and annoying, I can at least understand it due to the time period and public concern (UK).
What really erks me off is the fact that Mike's chuck-idge was severely censored in the 2007 TMNT movie. Hasn't the over-dramatic nunchaku "debate" died down by now. Are they really that much more dangerous than a katana blade? Come on!

Coola Yagami

I think the basic idea is... swords are hard to find and the Katana requires great skill. But any idiot can chain or tie two sticks together and either poke his eye out or cause some damage to someone else.

I don't get why Michelangelo had to have a grappling hook as a substitute weapon to begin with. Couldn't they have given him a better weapon? I don't care very much for the Next Mutation but I liked the weapon substitute (tonfa was it?) he had in that show better than the stupid grapplinghook. :x

I have to see if I still have the copy but I believe this was stated in Wizard when Robbie was there Mort of the month or whatever they called.

I agree. The main issue I had was that in the earlier TMNT episodes, all 4 turtles used to use those shell-based grappling hooks to scale stuff... and all of a sudden Mikey liked his so much he decided to ditch his nunchucks in favor of it??? That's like making Don dump his bo for the shell-shaped suction cups they always use. I agree, the tonfa woulda been a more bad ass weapon and more difficult for kids to replicate. Plus, they come in pairs, so it's not so weird as Mikey dumping a pair of chucks for a grappling hook.

or maybe they could have given Michaelangelo a three-sectioned-staff (like the one he has in the new toon during the ninja tribunal arc) that is sort of like the nunchucks only it has a middle staff part to it.

I was watching some document saying that nunchuku are banned weapon in UK and i live here from some time , in UK radio every day they talk about death , who killed who , how many stabs he gave with his knife and all this sick info , really this is ridiculous that everyday they talk about people dying and they banning some cartoons at the same time. Its just ... no words .

It woulda been kinda weird seeing 2 turtles with staves... especially since Don was the main staff turtle and now suddenly Mikey is given a staff that's way cooler than his. It would be like giving Raph long more bad ass swords than Leo.

Man, I wish they just gave Mike a different weapon or something (I mean other than a grappling hook). Maybe tonkas or something like that. I mean, are there really only 4 well-known ninja weapons? I guess I don't know that many myself, but there have got to be more that Mike could have used other than a grappling hook.
