from 9.99 to $1326 in less than 24 hours..and reserve still not met!

I actually passed these up at a convention in '94 once. Stupid! Stupid!

Yeah, I've pretty much resigned that I'll never get these.

I'm pretty sure these copies are the same ones that were sold (ungraded) on eBay maybe six months or so ago. I actually questioned the authenticity of those because the seller's story was complete BS (claiming they were from distributor overstock, which would be impossible for these books).

The person who bought them put them up for sale about two months ago, but pulled them from sale before the auctions ended. I don't think this is the same person again... but the visible staples make me think they're the same copies, and they've only just been graded.

Would that grade be BS Rose? Because they look fake to me.

I would not consider that grade to be a stamp of authenticity, but I wouldn't automatically label them as fakes, either.

The problem with these books is that they are incredibly easy to counterfeit. The originals were printed with copiers. A copy of a copy is going to be slightly degraded, but enough so that you can tell? Especially 25 years later? Hard to say...

When the copies showed up 6 months ago I asked Ryan B. what he thought of them, and he said they looked like fakes to him. But he asked Dan B. what he though, and Dan thought they looked legit. It's literally that hard to tell with these things.

Really, the only authenticity I would trust on these things would come directly from Kevin or Peter.

Yeah, that is exactly the problem. They aren't "comic books" really, but a bunch of copies stapled together. I remember Steve Lavigne sold his copies on Ebay a couple years back..those I would trust..but I won't fork over dough on these unless I know they're real...which seems to be..impossible.

Yea, these books are fake.

You are right Rose that these are the same sketchy books that sold a while back for ALOT cheaper. The staples are all wrong. This was confirmed to me from the 1 person I know who has real copies that were given to him from Kevin personally.

So you would be very wise to stay far away from these books...

That's what I thought. The staples shouldn't be on the outside of the books like that, right?

I wonder why PGX didn't know this...they are an "authority" of sorts...anyway...I'm also staying far, far away. Too expensive, anyway.

PGX, as far as many in the comic community feel, are FAR from being reliable. Yes, they "officially" grade books, but they have had a TON of bad press regarding letting retouched/repainted books get by their "trained" eyes. There have alse been a few notorious case involving very valuable Disney books they were trimmed & repainted and were given their "unrestored" grade. There are alot more examples.

CGC runs a much tighter ship and if you want real, high grade authenitcated books, they are the ones to go to... (this also help explains the the big price disparity b/w 2 exact books with the same exact grade, and the CGC one will ALWAYS go for higher)

The fact that CGC refused to grade them should be a bit of a clue. It's an unfortunate truth that even industry "authorities" aren't informed enough to give reliable TMNT info.

Yeah, I tend to stay away from both CGC and PGX, but only because I like comics that I can open and read...I can say though that I agree CGC is much more reliable. For investment's sake it's a brilliant idea though...graded comics go for serious $$$.

BTW, I didn't even notice the odd staples on my first viewing. Thanks for pointing them out.

Yea, graded books are an "acquired" taste. But they do have some good use, esp in older Silver and Bronze age books where color touching, trimming, cleaning, pressing, etc. were used quite a bit and often, undisclosed. So they provide that service so that you can then make an informed decesion if you want an "unrestored" (for much cheaper) or "restored". And obvioulsy, they allow you to get a third party perspective as far as grade of the book for those that want highgrade 9.8, 9.9s book that just look amazing.

But thats whats so cool about collecting. There is such a variety in what people collect.

Too bad there's no way to communicate to the buyer that they're fakes. :ohwell:

I can't believe I didn't buy these when I had the chance at nycc, now I'm regretting it. All of those books where in the tmnt section all under $15.

These were under $15? That's a little hard to believe...

thebrownranger

No, its true. If you go to any comic book convention, they discount basically every comic there at very low prices (well anything a few years after silver age. cgc comics really are never discounted) because there are so many books there and so many exhibitors who want to sell what they have. In this case, comic books. I bought loads of a tmnt vol. 1 comics ranging from $1.00 all the way to $13.00.

Yea, I seriously doubt that...

And yea, I saw these sold a few days ago. Its a true shame we can't let them know these were complete fakes. I still can't believe PGX graded these?! Another reason not to trust that company....
