Inspired by the other thread...
What would Splinter do with each Turtle when they are having individual father and son time? What activities would they engage in? Where would they go? What would they talk about? What would they eat? What would happen with each Turtle that would make it an unique experience that would be different from what Splinter would experience with the other 3 Turtles?

I remember seeing vaguely in the new toon where Splinter was trying to get close to Mikey. Mikey wasn't brushing him off, but he was like so into whatver he was doing he was absent mindedly forgetting about Splinter.
But that aside, I think for starters, Splinter would have to spend a few days with each Turtles away from the lair, like maybe hang out in the mountains or at Casey's farm house in the country.
Mikey's case, Splinter would let Mikey tell him all about the different stories and comics he has read and come up with. I beleive Splinter know's a few things about art, and so both would learn from eachother techniques and ways to proceed on an artistic project. Splinter might challenge Mikey with some high speed obstacle course, something that will keep him busy. They also would try a bunch of ways to mix some Italian and Japanese foods and find out what they like best.
Donny would probably be one of the toughest, but Splinter could find out what Donny is hoping to achieve in life. What he thinks about how his life has turned out so far. Maybe they would take a trip where Donny could see some ancient ruins, and see for himself how people of the past used old tools and to read sun dials and how they lived their way of life. Donny and Splinter would swap stories on the constellations, about the different planets and solar systems out there. They could talk about what they think the lair could use to make it more efficient, more home like.
Raph. A quiet camping trip in the wilderness with talks on why he likes to go up ground so much. What he sees in himself. Splinter can find out all of the things Raphael has learned when on his own, or from hanging with Casey.
And on a special note, it might be worth Splinter's time to get to know April and Casey more too, since they are practically family!

So what would Splinter do with April and Casey?
Also, I noticed you only mentioned three of the Turtles. Was that on purpose?

No, I think Splinter and Leo already know each other very well. It's the other three I think ar a bit estranged.

Yes, but remember this is father and son time. Not sensei and student time. Not best buds time a la Casey and Raph, April and Donnie, or Klunk and Mikey.
What I think Splinter would do with each Turtle as father and son:
- I think Splinter would take Michelangelo to an amusement park. Or a circus- though perhaps one with a lot of clowns and humanely trained domestic animals. Mikey would ride the roller coasters and win the pie eating contest. Splinter may ride some of the tamer rides with Mikey and watch the shows. If Splinter were in really good shape, he could even go skating with Mikey. Or take him to the zoo- especially if there is a petting zoo. I can definitely see A LOT of father and son bonding activities for Splinter and Mikey. Which sadly are underused because Mikey is usually shown getting into trouble or being too silly.
- For Raphael, Splinter would take him to an athletic event. Or even do something athletic with him like go to the batting cages together. Or go fishing with him. Or camping. Or to a game show to participate together in it. Or to watch comedy, if the comedian is not too crude. This one is a bit trickier, but it can be done. And Raphael needs it very much.
- Regarding Donatello, definitely a science museum. Especially a hands-on museum. Or an aquarium. I think Donnie would enjoy petting dolphins and maybe even swimming with them- not sure if Splinter would be up for the swimming, though. Maybe an educational park, a space center, or a children's museum that is more educational than just plain entertainment would be cool too. More father and son bonding that needs to be shown.
- I know that Splinter and Leonardo sometimes seem more like best friends rather than father and son. But Leo sometimes still needs Splinter to be his father and not just his sensei and friend. I can definitely see Leo enjoying going to the art museum or a history museum. And definitely going to the theatre to see a play.
And definitely for all of them Splinter taking each one alone to a restaurant. Except that Donatello likes sushi in some versions and dislikes it in others, so it will have to be a different kind of restaurant for each Turtle.

How? Show me examples of how he tried to reach and succeeded with Donny, Raph and Mikey on their own grounds, and not something to do with ninjitsu. They go to him when they are troubled, which most children do, they go to their mentors. But I really havent seen much which it showed Splinter trying to get close to Mikey, Donny and Raph beyond the ninja training. He's always praising Leo for his ninjitsu efforts in training, why not reach out and praise the others where they are the best at? See where I am going here?

That's sounds great, but I really cant see Splinter wanting to take any of the Turtles to a crowded area where they could cause an alarm. Kind of why I kept on going to the wilderness route or hanging out at Casey's family farm house, away from people discovering who they are.

As for trying to reach out...I don't really see how he does that at all...I mean I don't see him going out with any of his sons and doing any extracirricular activities, except anything that has to do with defeating enemies or saving the world...I guess I don't get the question.

In "Scion of the Shredder", Splinter does show curiosity about Michelangelo's card tower.
And in another episode, he did compliment Donatello's vehicle. Even if he told him right afterwards to keep it outside the house since it was being too noisy.

I think I'm just PMS-ing which is why I sound so hostel. I apologise.
But I sometimes wondered about certain actions in the movies and 2k3 toon (I havent read the comics, so can't make comments and comparisons reffering to that medium, and I don't consider anything of the 87 toon to be of any canon storywise, so omit that in my catching up with the Turtles)
In the 2k3 toon, Splinter always knew Raph was a loose cannon, the way he acted and lived would make one believe he was on the path of actually killing someone or getting himself killed. Most of the time, it was the voices of reason from Leo and Donny, and the close friendships of Mikey and Casey that kept Raph in check. But after watching the Ancient One, Splinter know's Leo is having a difficult time with the whole ordeal about Karai and the Shredder and all, he sends him off to the Ancient One for some spiritual healing. Why hadn't he thought about doing something like this when Raph was showing extreme outbursts of rage? It might have been beneficial to Raph in the past, and stopped some of the animosity he feels later on. Was it something he either didn't think was neccessary, or something that totally slipped his mind?
And then in the latest film, why send just Leo on some special training mission? Why not send all of them. Sending just Leo was a recipe to cause hatred and rage in Raph. If Raph hadn't stumbled onto the man who passed on his Nightwatcher persona to keep him occupied, what would he have done the whole time Leo was gone?
And why was it up to Donny to keep the broken home together? He and Mikey worked to keep the lair going, food on the table, and made sure the home was comfortable for everyone. Again, where in the hell are their damn medals!;) Or maybe this just wasn't a well thought out movie.
Damn, I need some chocolate!

Didn't Splinter also ask Mikey in an exasperated tone how long it took him to make that card tower?
And Splinter had to say something nice before telling Donny that his truck wasn't welcome inside. But it's ok for them to train, scream, hollar, grunt, clash swords and sais and throw eachother into walls in the lair.

I think Raphael would have been furious about having been sent away. While Leonardo did not want to go away at first, deep down he understood that it was for the best. And at least he knew that the Ancient One would be teaching him something new- although what the Ancient One taught Leo would be to heal his psyche.
I wonder if Raphael is not favorite because of his irascibility. Or if Raphael's anger comes from his not being favorite. While Mikey craves attention desperately and gets into trouble, he does not seem to have Raph's anger issues. And Donnie seems to be just as glad to not be favorite as he is to not be least favorite.
But suppose that Splinter took one day to bond with each Turtle as an individual. What would they do together each day? You can assume we are in Fast Forward where they can go out in public. Or if not, what would they still do?

What would Splinter do special for each of his sons in a world where they were considered equal.
I agree with you that he would take Mikey to a carnival. He's join in some of the games, treat Mikey to some fair food. They might even venture off to a comic convention. If this had to be a specific place, a trip to Busch Gardens in Tampa Bay, Florida would be the best. It's got the most bad ass rides, it's got the wild game park, fair food, fun houses, fireworks at night, different cultures being paraded throughout the park during the day. And I'm sure there are comic book conventions being featured throughout the year.
With Raphael I think somewhere peacefull would be beneficial to both. I actually, truly think Splinter would treat Raphael on a cattle drive, City Slickers style. I think they would have the biggest blast, and Raph still could get in a few brawls at the local saloon, or wrestle some steers to the ground. Splinter could reach out to Raph to use his focus to tame a wild horse, and both could simply relax and fish the evening away on the banks of a quiet creek.
Donny and Splinter would have a blast at Cape Canavaral on Merrit Island, Florida. There is also this huge electronics complex called Harris that they could spend time in. It's mostly a research center for satelite systems and aviation defense sytems, but it's also a natural preserve and gaited community all in one. It's near Cape Canavaral, in a town called Melbourne, Florida. And if they have another week, they could go to the other coast and cruise around silicon valley!
And for Leo, what he really needs is a night at Cheetas, but that's a different story for a different time. I think Leo and Splinter would have the best time on a cruise tour, specifically through the Alaskan wilderness. Maybe a climb on Mount McKinley might be good for both their minds, bodies and spirits. A sight of a pod of orca's would also be a nice conversation piece.

Because Leo is the favorite and Raph is the black sheep :P j/k ;) nah, I see where you are coming from on this, but i think Raph's anger probelms are alot more complex than one singular thing that causes his behavior, but Leo's anger was much more straight foward and easier to pin point and correct. Not easier to correct mind you just easier to see what was eating him. With Raph it seems more than one thing at work that is angering him and harder to seperate and diagnosis and treat. And I agree with Scandia. Splinter sending Raph away to heal would probably be taken out of context by him and he would feel like he was being kicked out or disowned.

As a fellow Florida resident, I agree with Donnie liking Kennedy Space Center. I think he'd also like Epcot Center.
Mikey would like Busch Gardens a lot. I do think Mikey likes animals the most out of all 4 Turtles. But he would enjoy almost every Florida theme park.
Hadn't thought about an Alaskan cruisetour for Leo. I think he'd like it quite a bit. But I do not know what you mean by Cheetas- could not find it online.
Raphael I can see the benefits of a peaceful nature outing. But I wonder if he would lose patience with that as well and would want to watch a wrestling match or game show.

Actually, I spelled it wrong, it's called Cheetahs, and it's one of the first chain strip joints that came out. And I was just kidding about Leo needing to go to one.
About Raph liking the peace and quiet, I got that notion from one of the old comics that wrapped up and ended Raph fishing out in the country where he seemed finally at peace/ I dont know what comic it was, but I remember it showing him in a straw hat fishing off the bank of a lake. I thought it was in Florida, and I also believe it was one of the comics that had his eye missing.
And I too am from Florida, so know alot about the attractions here.

To answer Warhorse's question on what Splinter does with his son that doesn't involve ninjitsu, I think Splinter engages in normal father son things with his boys. He's been shown to just sit around and watch television with the turtles, heck it was shown in one episode that they have movie night where they rent a classic movie and watch it together as a family. And in another episode you see Splinter playing poker with Don and Raph and obviously enjoying it.

Splinter has quite a few times praised Don on his inventions and all the work he puts into the lair and all the safety technology he puts up to ward off enemies. Splinter seem to show the most respect and thanks for Don's efferts around the home.
