Did you know that "Saki" was a Japanese female name? "Sa" mean "blossom" and "Ki" mean "hope".

No wonder why Oruku Saki turned so bad. It's almost the same thing as Anakin Skywalker being called "Annie".

Seriously, I'm wondering how the authors came with the name "Saki". Was it because it sounded like "saké"?

Who knows?

It actually depends on the kanji. I don't think I've ever seen his name written in kanji, so it could have a completely different meaning.

"Saki" Blossom - Hope

But, it's still remain a female name. Along with "Sakiko" (blossoming child) and "Sakura" (cherry blossom).

Hence why in the Japanese version his name was changed to Oroku Sawaki.

Sawaki? I can't find a concrete meaning of that name but, it seems to be more a surname than a given name.

I've seen his Japanese name written as 沢木尾禄 in a few places, although I'm not sure how official that is, since it is almost always written in katakana. Also, his Japanese name appears to be switched so that Oroku is his given name and Sawaki is his surname.

Isn't Yoshi also a girl's name? Remember, the entire Turtleverse was constructed as a parody. Problem was, they made it a parody that was meant to be taken as seriously as any well-known superhero (referring to the origins of the franchise, back in 1984).

Yoshi is a girl's name?

My world has crumbled.

I think Yoshi could work for either gender. But I don't think that Eastman and Laird gave Shredder a girl's name on purpose, it seems like more of an accident.

Yoshi has several meanings: Rightous/Good and Calm/Quiet/Serene. Hamato translates as Seaside. But it is as a whole a male name. The feminine form is Yoshiko.

Saki however appears to be a decidedly female name. No wonder he became a villian!! Everyone was making fun of him for having a girly name so it's revenge! He's like the boy named Sue on a revenge kid.

The Japanese name Saki may be written with the characters for "blossom; bloom" (sa) and "hope; beg; request; rare" (ki).

Plus there's the Saki Monkey's. How'd you like to grow up with a girly name and a South American monkey??

Oh and doing further research (I've known about Saki monkey's for years actually).

The Persian word sāqī (also written as saqi or saki) literally means wine-server or wine-pourer and is frequently used in Persian poetry to describe the glorious Server who continually pours out the wine everlasting to all of mankind, while implying that only a completely empty bowl is truly ready to be filled with such a fine wine.

But when it gets down to it perhaps he was named after the author Hector Hugh Munro who wrote under the pen name of Saki (who may have named himself after the Monkey...which apperantly is known for a violent temper...)

The name Saki is often thought to be a reference to the cupbearer in the Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyam, a poem mentioned disparagingly by the eponymous character in "Reginald on Christmas Presents" and alluded to in a few other stories. It may, however, be a reference to the South American primate of the same name, "a small, long-tailed monkey from the Western Hemisphere" that is a central character in "The Remoulding of Groby Lington" and that, like Munro himself, hid a vicious streak beneath a gentle exterior.

The mangaka for "Please Save My Earth" is called Saki Hiwatari (Hiwatari being the family name). And she's female.

And I did not make the connection between Saki Hiwatari and Oroku Saki till today.

And blossom. There was also "Lotus Blossom". Bebop and Rocksteady are musical genres. But I would like to know what the name "Krang" comes from.

Me thinks Saki and Nagi were named after

Nagasaki, Japan.

Even tho Naga isn't quite Nagi...it's similar

I know a Japanese dude named Yoshi. So, yeah, it can be a guy's name.

Hense why the turtles four are named after Italian Painters. The duo had trouble coming up with convincing Japanese names.

And if Krang found this out on the show, could you imagine the constant teasing? Hoo boy, would that have been a riot.

Bebop and Rocksteady are musical genres. But I would like to know what the name "Krang" comes from.

Most of the Villains and assorted mutants were basically weird puns, too. Until a certain movie came out, i didn't know what "Leatherhead" meant.

Nagi is a varient of the Arabic name Naji, which means Safe.

Naga is a snake spirit in Buddhism and Hinduism. They're generally male while the females are known as Nagi. It's also the general term for Cobra's in many Asian countries. The TMNT met a Naga in the Archie series while on a quest to find Jagwar's mother. It's also the name of Ninjara's brother.
