View Full Version : Mikey's relationships

I've watched this show with a friend. She likes it alot and she and I have had a few conversations about the relationships the turtles have with each other and with the other characters on the show, and we had gotten around to talking about Mikey and his relationships. And she pointed out that Mikey is in desperate need of a friend who isn't his three brothers. And I agree. Almost all characters that come across him thinks he is annoying or show some signs of exesperation with him. It's like no one sees him as anything but a nusance that has to be put up with except for a few people, and even those few people act like they are some what just humouring him than anything else. I guess what bugs me is that Mikey doesn't really have any equal relationships with any one on the show; he is eighther annoying pest of a brother, hyper active aquantence, or star struck admirier.
I think Mikey needs to meet some who isn't a disiplined warrior, or science guy or badass, I don't think Mikey really indentifies with these types ( and i don't think these types "get" him), and unfortunately thats all the turtles ever seem to come across. I think Mikey would benefit with some one to indentify with on a equal basis who has the same interests and personality as him. Some one who isn't a warrior but a normal teenager who likes comics and video games and super hereos and shares some of his quirky characteristics. And I know most people would say that he has this with Silver Sentry but I really see his relationship with Silver Sentry like hero worship and admiration of a person he looks up to and wants to be like than a friendship, also even though Silver Sentry seems to respect Mikey sometimes I get the impression that he is amused by him or is just humouring him.

Hmmm do you mean new toon or old toon Mike? Since the General forum seems to mostly deal with the older stuff, I thought the topic was reffering to Mikey's relationship with Kala, his crush on Buffy Shellhammer, and the thing he had for Mitsu in TMNT III.
But yeah, on the new toon he needs a good buddy. At least on the old show he kinda/sorta had Mondo Gecko.

I was refering to Mikey in 2k3 series. And by relationships I don't mean romantic in nature but just social interation with others.

In the OT and Archie, Mikey is good friends with Mondo Gecko.
And in the NT and Mirage, Mikey's best friend would be Klunk.

OT: Kala, Mondo Gecko
Mirage Comics: Klunk, baby Shadow, Regenta
Image: Horridus
NT: Klunk, Tora
That's all I can think of. Rose would know better than most of us I would say.

maybe this thread should be moved over to the new toon disscussion forum, because I'm only refering to Mikey from the new toon and his need of a buddy. I only put it over here because I thought it would have a better chance of thriving since the new toon forums are concentrating on the upcoming new season.
Mikey comes across to me as being kind of emotional (not agnsty) do his life style. He acts the most like a teenager out of the rest of the turtles and I think emotinally Mikey needs some one who can relate to and who doesn't think he is the most annoying thing that ever lived. Half of the things he does, are things that, reasonably are anything a teenager would say or do but yet it's met with such aggravation (at least when he's not trying to be so activily). I think the reason he acts out the way he does because his emotional needs aren't being met. He's a social being who wants to share his zest for life with every one. Closest thing Mikey has to some one to relate to him is Raph. And I don't know, I know they both love each other but some times I detect this unspoken tension of anger and dislike between Raph and Mikey mixed up with their affection for each other which I think get in the way sometimes. I mean Leo and Don are much nicer to Mikey but they are just too...serious and up-tight for him to relate too and their personalities just don't mesh on the level that Mikey emotinally needs. Raph for all his snarling and temperment problems is the only turtle that has the most charisma and desire for fun and relaxion like him. Problem is thats only when Raph is in the mood for it. Other times he is just agnsting his head off and Leo and Don are generally to wrapped up in their own thing to give the time of day.
Like I said, I think what Mikey is lacking the most is some one to relate too out side his family that shares his interests and ideals. Which he sadly lacks. All the turtles but him have a friend out side their family to whom they can relate too but Mikey. Leo has Usagi and Splinter, Don has April and Leatherhead, and Raphael has Casey. Who does Mikey have? Klunk his pet cat? Another thing to consider, Mikey really seems to stick out like a sore thumb in most situations because of his life style he and the turtles usually meet people who are skilled warriors like Leo, tough guy bad asses like Raph, or brilliant scientist types like Don. How often do they encounter (or ever will) energetic zestful life loving people like Mikey? No wonder Mikey tries emulating super heros and tries to be like his idol Silver Sentry. He is the closest thing socially that Mikey can relate too that fits his own ideals.

Mikey did get the short end of the stick when it came to friendships. Maybe they compensated for that by having him have the most romantic interests. But he got very few platonic friends. They do need to have him have a best bud in 2k3- even if it means bringing Mondo Gecko in. Which I would not mind at all.

Sage you bring up a good point. Mike is closest to the super hero community. Look at Vol 4 and the cartoon, he relates to them and he gets along with them very well. In "Christmas Aliens" from the NT, Silver Sentry says hey then asks where Mike is. I'm not say SS thinks of Mike all the time but that is the first person he asks about.

Nobody also called Mikey's Cell phone out of the four of them when he needed their help in "Still Nobody"

I don't think Tora really counts since that guy (and most of the acolytes) got next to zero exposure in season five so you really didn't get to see how well they got along with the turtles. So you really didn't get to see alot of chemistry between Mikey and Tora to see if they had that "kindred spirit" thing going on that Mikey's brothers have with their best friends. And from what little they showed it seemed that Tora thought Mikey talked too much and was annoying like every one else in the series does.
And I slightly disagree with Mikey and Silver Sentry being friends, they seem more like allies that respect one another rather than close buddies. So that really only leaves Klunk :o
Another thing to consider, Mikey really seems to stick out like a sore thumb in most situations because of his life style
Mikey really comes across to me as being an agitated person and this could be why, maybe if he had a friend to relate to he'd calm down if he had an outlet for all his pent up energy.

I just think that it would be nice that Mikey has someone who is in the same age group as him who he can relate to and kick back with and likes him as an equal. This is why I liked Mondo Gecko from the old toon because they had so much in common and genuanly enjoyed each others company, I would like to see new toon Mikey have a buddy like that (not necessarily Mondo Gecko) that he can relate to and just hang out with. Some one who isn't a warrior, because I think that is where Mikey's competiveness shows up and he becomes abrasive and cocky. I just think it's funny that Leo, Raph, and Don all have some one who they can share the same interests with on an equal level except him. :-?

well maybe we will see it eventually. They could introduce another mutant either Mondo or someone like him and do a whole...Mikey finds a friend thing. It maybe a nice character that comes and goes out of storyline actually. We have a few of those already and it would bring another interesting storyline with it I am sure. Could even be a random filler eppy. Of course some people may not like this so much cause it would probably be a more lighthearted kiddy type of episode but then again Mondo wasn't exactly a good guy when he and Mikey first met. There is potential with Mikey's character we haven't see yet

Well, if it means anything, Cody was kind of a cross between Donatello and Michaelangelo, so not solely Michaelangelo's relation...but of course, no friend of the family cares only about one of the guys per se.
Scandia

Yeah, but Cody was best buds with Donatello in FF. In other words, with the one who was April's best friend rather than the one who was Casey's best friend. Raphael does complain about the future more than anyone else- ok, so he's overall cantankerous, but he truly has no buddies or hobbies in Fast Forward.
Otherwise, neither Michelangelo nor Leonardo got a peer best friend in any universe. Mondo Gecko shows up in just 2 episodes- and in the Archie comic he has a different origin and a very different finale. Usagi shows up more- not to mention he is in 3 universes- but he still is not a major character like Casey or April. So Mikey's and Leo's best friends are not their peers- and in Mikey's case, Klunk only shows up in 2 universes.
It shows that Raph and Donnie were Kevin's and Peter's favorite Turtles.

If Mike were to have a friend, he or she should have patience and a good sense of humor, and have a sense of adventure as well. If Mike was my friend, I would definately need those attributes...

Cody was friends with Don and Mike for different reasons. Don had the tech side, Mikey had the video gaming and cool tech side. I think Usagi has been quite the friend for Leo, so saying Leo doesn't have any friends in any universe is kind of inaccurate.

Neither Leo's best friend nor Mikey's best friend is his peer.
On one hand, Leo's best friend is a recurrent character.
On the other hand, Mikey can address his best friend as "'Sup dude!".
Donnie got the best deal, followed by Raph, then Leo, and finally Mikey.

would Mikey really need a good friend outside his family if his brothers didn't act like he they can barely tolerate him? Half of this orginal post seems to ask not only does Mikey need a friend out side his family but a friend who isn't his brothers too. Like if Mikey's family where to meet Mikey on his own level more often would he really need a friend? His brothers all obviously love Mikey and they all share activites together but at the same time they seem to have some issues with him. Especially Raph. When the show first started I thought Raph couldn't stand Mikey because he would get angry when ever Mikey opened his mouth, if Raph didn't sometimes get worried about Mikey when he nearly gets killed I would think Raph hated him. Thats...kind of messed up if your relationship among your siblings is strained enough they don't seem to like you. :-?

It's not a strained relationship per say. It's more of a love hate thing. Let's face it, we all have siblings that can get on our nerves, but we still love them and worry for them. Yes, Mikey has his moments, but he can also be the most serious and diligent of them all. He is just not that disciplined, and that combined with the producers (or whoever's) need to push that surfer goofball stereo type, he comes off as annoying to some people. I think he's a great character. He reminds me of some of the old cartoons, in the fact that he's almost predictable in what he's going to say/do.
Mikey got meh! ><
... Alright, he's in need of a closest living and intelligent thing in NT, given how he spends all his spare time throughout the series--reading superhero comics, watching monster DVDs, horsing around with Raphie, randomly cuddling with Klunk. :/

the thing with Raph and Mikey is that there issues seem like something that has developed over time. That blow out in Meet Casey Jones where Raph became so angry he nearly smashes Mikey's head in after he loses to a sparring match is a big indication to how strained and volital their relationship can be. What floored me was how Mikey, after the incial blow out sened to just shrug it off like nothing happened . I think on some level they both resent the other for being what they are. Raph resents Mikey for his natural talent and happy-go-lucky attitude while he is bothered and agonises over his situation and fragile control over his temper. Mikey resents Raph for his strength and his tough attitude and maybe for Raph's raw abilty to let loose his temper, while Mikey has always had to use passive aggresive ways to express his negative emotions. So they like each other but I think they both see things in the other that they resent and makes them feel insecure. I think this is why Raph is constantly physcally bullying Mikey and Mikey can't help but rub anything accomplishment he has in Raph's face which only makes the tension worse between them. This was made even worse after Mikey's battle nexus win and he made it a point to rub how he defeated Raph in his face, after that I really noticed a distancing between him and Raph.
These two have the strangest relationship with each other Raphael can attack Mikey and Mikey forgives him and doesn't take it personaly. I wonder if it happens (or did) happen often and it is/was a regular occurance so Mikey learned to mearly shrug it off. But around the time Casey showed up I noticed that Raph and Mikey became less buddy buddy and friendly. I wonder if Mikey on a subconscience level is jealous of Casey and the similarites that Raph and him share that draw them together, and maybe feels like Casey has taken his place as best buddy with Raph. Kinda making feel out of the loop.

I disagree with the part about Leo not having a peer best friend. Leo has Usagi and even though he isn't a regular like April or Casey he has enough repport and chemsitry with usagi in those two episodes to show how close kinderd spirited they both are on a equal level. There definately peers.

I really can't think of a episode where Mikey got jealous. :ohwell: Mikey doesn't have much of a posessive/jealous streak. Some how I don't think Mikey would get jealous of Casey for being Raph's friend, I don't see him getting posessive of Raph. If anything I could see Raph being posessive or jealous of Mikey, if he felt Mikey was ignoring him or giving his attention to some one else.

LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLz
Now we got another more interesting theory: Raph got jealous/posessive of Mikey. And Splinter got jealous/possesive of April, and Hun of Krang. LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLz *pounding desk
Don't... take it wrong way, I'm just joking, and you really made my day, Jelly Bean. You just comfirmed my thought Mikey does lack of that kinda streak somehow, compared with his other brothers. For example, Leo got jealous of others overtaking him in leadership, Raph got jealous of others stealing his thunder in the shows, Donny got jealous of... well, maybe it's just me, but I insist my theory that Donny wants to take over the team instead of Leo. 0_o Or maybe you have a Donny/April theory and whatever, anyway, Donny got jealous of something, too. So all in all, it's just Mikey left of no one/nothing jealous. Uhm. ><

There is one episode in Fast Forward where he gets jealous. Just watch how he acts in Clash of the Turtle Titans Mikey was extremely jealous of the new turtle titan and took his assuming the turtle titan persona very personaly and went after him. Not one of Mikey's proudest moments since he acted rather shameful, but it does show Mikey getting jealous. Actualy as juvinile as Mikey can be I thought his behavior was a bit much even for him in this episode. I would have thought Mikey would be more honored than offended that some one was emulating him. :ohwell: But other than this episode Mikey doesn't show much jealously and possesiveness over anything. Although I do think that Mikey might be a bit jealous of his brothers on a subconscience level.

Yeah, but Usagi is not a regular like Casey and April are.
But Leo has Splinter and they have alot in common even when Usagi isn't around. Although I wonder do you think if Usagi was a regular that Leo and him would eventually come to odds with each other since Leo is a ninja and Usagi is a samurai? I remember an episode where Leo is in Usagi's world and they nock out some ninjas and steal their outfits and he comments that he feels that he is cloaked in dishonor, Usagi doesn't seem to like ninjas. Do you think that will become an issue at some point. Leo always seems to come to odds with people he has respect for.
Donny got jealous of... well, maybe it's just me, but I insist my theory that Donny wants to take over the team instead of Leo. 0_o
could you please give an example of when Don has ever shown signs of this please? Other than being a bit cranky, Don is the most laid back of the bunch, and uninterested in taking over the team.

hey just a thought, since Klunk is basically Mikey's best friend but since he is just a cat he can't be friends with him on the same level as Mikey, what if the show ever does a episode where Klunk gets mutated into a humanoid cat that can talk! Do you think Mikey would like that if klunk became his intellectual equal and he can hang out with and be his buddy or do you think Mikey would just want Klunk to be his pet?

Pet, IMO. Or maybe his fluffy cuddle cushion lo? Anyway I don't sense Mikey want a buddy like Klunk, if he does he'd have carry it around everywhere, but he never keeps it around except when he needs a cushion or something, that's a hint that Mikey takes Klunk as a pet not a buddy.

But don't you think if that super hero is not named TT everything'll be fine to Mikey lo? I think Mikey got jealous of TT simplely because he has already registered that title, anyway Mikey is a super-con and would like to help any superheroes to serve the justice, right?

I do think Mikey sees Klunk as his buddy and not just his pet. While the other 3 Turtles see Klunk mainly as the family cat, Michelangelo truly has a special bond with Klunk that leads him to see this cat as a friend and not a pet.

I seriously doubt that if Klunk ever became mutated that they would be buddies :-? if anything, Klunk would probably see Mikey as his father or something, like how Splinter sees Yoshi as his father. Pets see their humans as care givers and owners see them as almost like their baby. They might be friends but not on a equal buddy buddy level like between two humans. Plus I think Klunk turning into a humanoid cat would just screw up the relationship dynamic between Mikey and Klunk.

It's not like the new guy ripped it off him. As far as Silver Sentry's grandson knew the orginal TT was dead. You can't steal something from some one if they are dead. Mikey was out of line.

You know what I just thought of? Not only does mikey not have human (or mutant) buddy of his own but he doesn't have a female to crush on/have a connection with eighther. Don has April who he crushes on and shares his techno geek love with. Leo has the angsty dynamic of respect/distrust with Karia since they where both honorable. And Raph has Joi that fighter gal from season five. It may have been slight but they where paired off with each other and hung out and it appeared that Raph had a thing for her. But not Mikey :( I wonder if Mikey's lack of personal relationships are due to time constrainst to get a story told or if the creators just don't feel his character would fit having such heavy relationship dynamics because he is supposed to be the funny kiddy character, and instead gave his brothers those deep personal relationships. :ohwell:
