I was talking with my friend the other day and I told him that I downloaded the first ep of TMNT, then he began to laugh and said I was weird. He used to be a fan of the TMNT but now he's so much into anime that he told me that he can't stand to watch old stuff like the TMNT anymore. I'm into anime too and have at least over 200 anime tapes/dvds but I easily got back into watching the TMNT without hesitation. I told a few of my friends that I was getting back into watching the old TMNT and they just seemed to shudder at the fact.

When I found this site, I was suprised to see that so many people were still fans of the show. Now I feel alot better about sharing my fandom for the TMNT.

Cool man I am a fan since 1988, never stopped liking the TMNT, and since 3 years I also dig Animé.

Friends and people in my area also made fun of me: Turtles are over man!!
When I said the Turtles still exsisted (in Amerika, I live in Holland) they would say :"Yeah right, they still exsist...in your head, haha"

So when I told that the TMNT would return, they were roling over the ground, hehe!!

My close friends believed me ofcourse, and with a bit of convincing that the original comics are more for grown up people, I can still say Im a fan on my 23rd year, and be proud of it, people don't laugh anymore, they even help me if they find something, and they'll buy it.

One of my friends found my collection of Mirage comics and he laughed at me. He said that he could not believe that I still like the turtles. I told him that it is good thing for me to do in my spare time. He also could not believe that I like Renaissance art......he believes the reason behind this is because I like the turtles. However, that is not the case. I like Renaissance no matter if I like the turtles or not.

I dont even bother mentioning it to people I know in real life anymore. People around here (Norway) might look at me weirdly cause I like anime, so why bother? I doubt that the new series will come here... but thats why we have broadband >D

Ah... he's what I call a "Nu-Generation" Anime fan... they like anime because it's "Cool" and hate everything american because it's not Japanese... I dislike NG anime fans... THey've taken over the Anime Cons and made us old school anime fans hide from them...

Anyways, Im pretty lucky... All my friends got excited for the new TMNT cartoon when I told them about it. We're not above getting in to the nostalgia of our child hood, and admit liking things like that or GI Joe or He-Man etc...

I have been a fan since at least 87 and I was born in 86 so I have been a fan for most of my life. No one is going to stop my interests in turtle power.

my mom thinks its a little odd...but her and my friends love me for who I am...and if turtles is a part of that then so be it.

I like anime too...and have your friend watch the new show...I would say its pretty anime inspired...it does have to compete with it...in some ways.

Don't be afraid to shell out what you love..."it isn't always easy being green"

do people think im weird for it?? some do, some don't. most that have seen the mirage books (mostly my friends) don't see anything weird or wrong about it. i have noticed that the people that label us 'weird' for liking tmnt tend to be the same kind of people that think its 'weird' to watch adult swim or the like. they just tend to be close-minded to these kinds of things in general.

i really don't worry about it that much.

Oh yes... my husband never really accepted the fact I like TMNT and other such geeky comic book things.

He's pretty much your average, hard-nosed guy. Very traditional in beliefs on how women should behave, and how real/tough men should behave. So, for me to be all into comic books and not fashion magazines and soap operas makes no sense. In fact, it embarrasses him. :tsweatdr:

He's also Korean, so the anime factor is like' big deal'. He's seen it all his life, so he doesn't understand why Americans and most of Europe is all into it now. He also is not found of things Japanese, thus.. it just irks him even more that I like NINJA Turtles. Nevermind the fact the TMNT came from all American authors. There's no turning him.

*sai* At least my familay and the people at work are cool with it. But I pretty much keep my mouth shut in real life about my TMNT interest. Which is funny, cause it's quite alright to be openly fanatic about LotR. Hubby hasn't teased me about that interest as badly as he does the TMNT.

I've been a fan since 1990, and I'm not gonna stop just to make him happy. It ain't a sin, and it's not harmful to one's health like cigarettes and drugs. *snort* :tgrumble:

I'm sure some people think I'm weird for liking Ninja Turtles. My family is pretty cool with it, mostly because they all have their little obsessions and they can't really talk.

I don't have many RL friends, but the ones I have think I'm weird no matter what. They have their obsessions too, so they can't talk. :D

I have no hesitation about wearing my TMNT shirts out in public, or hanging out in the graphic novel section of the book store. No matter what you do, there're going to be people out there who think you're weird for doing it. Some people think I'm weird because I don't wear makeup and refuse to color my hair and wear trashy clothes. I'd rather drool over a weapons catalog than hunky guys. Forget them.

Yo
It's like retro to like tmnt, so if you were born in the right age group some might even consider it cool. For me, I don't care what they think. I tell my friends I like tmnt, they know, who cares.

In my area the TMNT is considered cool for the simple nastolgia of it. Sure, their aren't many into to the extent that I am, but if the topic comes up, nearly everyone I know would be like, "Yeah TMNT was the **** back in the day! Hell yeah!" or something along those lines. I'm not sure I would flaunt my obssesion in the matter, no more so then a person would present any obseesions that they might have. But no, people dont think its wierd to like the TMNT in my experience.

HorseTechie...I'm gonna guess you know what Kimchi is and you and his mom can't comminucate with each other worth crap. I'm Korean too. Anyway about the turtles...I loved it when I was 3, when the toon first came out and when the first turtles hit the shelves. I lost interest around..uh..well after the fifth line I think, it was a kinda off and on. I just picked it backed up when I heard a new toon was comin out and a new toy line. Some of my friends love the fact that I'm gettin back to them, and my parents are kinda freaked out cause they thought the turtles died out. Ha.

Oh, and yes...most Koreans DO still hold some beef with the Japanese. It's just the culture. If you knew what the Japanese did to the Koreans through out our history, you'd understand. Doesn't bother much though, but when I'm at school my friends think it's funny when I make some Japanese joke.

Yup. Read up about what the Japanese Empire did to much of Asia (Korea, Vietnam, China, Phillipinnes, etc.) from 1931-1945. You'll then learn why the Imperial Japanese and Nazis got along so well. You'll also learn why most Asian countries still don't like the Japanese.

Around here it varies a lot about what people think about TMNT. Some people think I'm a god because I'm still a tmnt fan and give them the divx episodes if they give me a cd. Of course I try to attract them to #tmnt-files but nobody has followed so far.

I don't really get wierd looks or anything. People are really cool about it. Most of my friends actually hunt for TMNT stuff when they go to garage sales, or thrift stores! Its awesome! and even though alot of them aren't really into TMNT they still don't mind talking about it for a while or even watching an episode with me. They were all really excited for me when They found out TMNT came back!

I never really bring it up to anyone. Since 1987, I've been a TMNT fan. Over a week ago, I mentioned my older brother that I was recording the new TMNT cartoon on VHS. He looked at me funny. We saw it, and I enjoyed it. My older bro said that it was pretty cool. I also enjoy Anime.

Around here it varies a lot about what people think about TMNT.That sounds exactly like the same scenario at my school. The only real negative respones I've gotten about it was from this one guy in my technical theater class who's not only hated by everyone, but also listens to nothing but Bad Religion and hates almost anything. Basically, more of an outcast than I am...

The surprising thing about it, however, was the reaction I've been getting lately from a lot of these "jock" type guys that I don't really have a high view of. I expected them to laugh at me openly saying stuff along the lines of, "Ninja turltes? What kinda geek are you?". Nope, quite the opposite in fact. The first positive response I got was during an argument about the TMNT with that guy I mentioned above. One of the football players interrupted and said, "Yeah! Ninja Turtles!" and high-fived me.

As if that wasn't good enough, just recently, another football player commented me on my black TMNT shirt. I mentioned the new cartoon series would premiere soon, and it surprised me again when he added, "Yep, and a new toy line and new video games." The icing on the cake came when I commented on all of these 80s toons being resurrected, and then the guy that high-fived me said, "Because they rule!"

Yet within that same class only about 2 weeks later, one of those SAME GUYS saw my shirt again and said out of the blue, "You know, I actually bought all three Ninja Turtles movies on DVD." Let's just say the conversation that ensued following that wasn't sarcastic. These guys really were into it!

What else? A couple of times in my comptuer science class I've gotten some positive comments, both while somebody saw me browsing the official site. One guy looked over my shoulder and asked what the URL of the site was. Another guy came up and showed me the TMNT hat he had since he was 5. It's too bad he didn't want to sell it...

Of course, the thing that hit me the most that many people at my school, not just the nerds like myself, were still into TMNT was actually my junior year last year. Again, it was a football player that showed his love for it. Our class was doing a mini-project in US History on the 80s and 90s, and part of it was a mock newspaper. The main headline on his was on the TMNT (I forgot what year he did, though).

On a side note, I think the TMNT can now be considered "legendary". To me something can't be called legendary until it reaches a second generation. An example would be the difference between the original X-Men and the early 90s X-Men. Yeah...

Yeah, I ran in to some jocks while looking at the new TMNT toys the day they came out at KB toys (well they were unpacking them anyways) and they all slapped hi-fives with me talking about TMNT... then some Gangsta type guys came over... AND JOINED IN.... it was so surreal to me. (in high school, I was a grunger, and hung out with skaters so they were our enemies and I still am in that frame of mind)

I think my mom might think I'm nuts for recording the new show... I don't wake up early enough on Saturdays to watch it. :P I've never been asked if I was too old for the show since I'm 18 and all... but I don't care anyway. Hell, there are tons of kids my age that absolutely love Spongebob Squarepants. GIVE ME A BREAK! No offense to anyone who is a fan of that show but nobody should even consider thinking I'm wierd for liking the TMNT if they watch friggin' Spongebob. A lot of my friends used to be a fan of the old toon back when I was... but they aren't into it now. I don't really bring it up at all... especially since it's only been about a month since I've regained my interest in them with the new toon.

I never have and never plan on going overboard however. The extent of my turtles purchases have been a few figures, a Michaelangelo costume, and a tape or two back in the early 90s. With the new generation of turtles... I'll buy whatever comes out on DVD and that'll be about it. With going to college soon I don't have the money to collect figures or anything... the actual cartoon is enough to satisfy me.

My mom tends to bitch about me still liking the Turtles (especially when I decide to order something through the mail). She can get me so riled up sometimes, I feel like punching a hole in the wall... or worse! Usually, I tell her to back off unless she wants me to do something I'll regreat later.

Yes he likes it. When I mentioned to him my revival on interest in the TMNT, his exact words were, "God, I love those guys, especially the movies!"

Maybe you remember the post I made a long time ago about how every Friday night or so he would take me and my sister to Blockbuster Video so that we could have a video to watch over the weekend. My sis and I always alternated on finding a TMNT video to rent. It even got to the point where my dad said to me every so often, "I think it's your sister's turn this week to get a Ninja Turtles video."

Even before that, he wanted to see the first movie as much as I did. The day it came out on video (and I mean THE day), he was looking for it as enthusiastically as I was.

Heh, heh, I remember what my mom said when I brought home my first two figures of the new wave. She's kinda okay with me being into Turtles, and since I paid for them myself, she doesn't have much of a say. But she still asked, "You sure you wanna spend your money on action figures?"

I just held up my figures and said, "These coulda been a bag of pot, I suggest you be happy."

There was a pause, then a few minutes of laughter before she dropped it.

(I've only watched the show once, but that was more than enough) But then, I always tend to identify with the cynical characters (Raphael, Basil Fawlty from 'Fawlty Towers', Mr. Lucus on 'Are you Being Served', etc... :D )

As others seem to be bumping old threads... though I have a faint memory of a similar more recent thread.

For me, I don't think people around me know I got into this.

When I was a kid TMNT was very popular so no. By the time we got to the late 90's or 2000's most people had moved on from TMNT, but remembered it fondly from their childhood.

Nowadays since nostalgia culture is mainstream, TMNT is eternally "cool" again.

Same thing happened with Pokemon to be honest, it went through it's era where kids had grown up and thought they couldn't like it anymore, but then through the passage of time "nostalgia" made it eternally cool as pop culture again.

Yes but cool on-line in fan communities or cool if you went into the office and said you are a TMNT fan? I wasn't sure if that was what the questions meant, like family/friends/co-workers etc.

I am sure some do..... Most all my friends know I am a huge Ninja Turtle Fan, but more so with comics and the movies. I don't really tell them I watch the 1987 cartoons all the time hahahahah. I keep that to myself. MY spouse obviously knows I am a huge fan, but now we have a 2.5 year old and we watch it together.

I could care less what people think of me.... I get more criticism for being an Edmonton Oilers fan than anything lmao.

For me it was, which didn't make sense, like I was a kid back then, I was the target demographic. Yet everyone at school at the tender age of 12 or 13 were already in the 'we're too cool for that ****' and 'gotta get laid' mindset. Only a friend and I talked turtles, we had to keep that to ourselves to avoid ridicule.

I think even back then the turtles were still considered goofy. Like IF they talked cartoons, Transformers and GI Joe were the stuff you talked about.

All of these pop culture movements happen in circumstance or in waves. The 80's was a circumstance that invited something like TMNT. The current wave of TMNT is nostalgia and that, I think, makes it easier for people to accept the fandom of it.

Personally, all of the TMNT fandom I've got left in me is purely being kept alive by nostalgia for the Fred Wolf and Archie material and fueled by the NECA stuff which I'm choosing to belive is the best it's going to get as far as representation of the original cartoon goes.

Most likely the only way I'll dive in deeper is if NECA goes "Archie" like I keep clamoring for now and again with posts like this.

I know there are people out there that view TMNT as a kids property, and think adults being into TMNT are weird.

Well.... TMNT is a kids property. And for the most part, adults being into TMNT is weird.

I think the depth of the weirdness is predicated on the level of being "into" TMNT that the adult is. It's probably more acceptable for a 40 year adult male who has his $#!( together to have a display case with some stuff in it in his office or whatever than it is for a social weirdo to have an entire room dedicated to TMNT filled with Plush toys, Playmates plastic and f'n blankies on the bed, you know?

You know looking back at this thread, I regret not taking more interest in Kali back when we both frequented this forum and Mikey's TMNT Forum when it was still around. I used to love reading her fan fiction and checking out her artwork. I even asked her to do a special drawing of Renet for me. Then again, there were so many of us back then sharing our ideas and linking to each other's websites it was hard to keep up with everybody. Man, what I'd give to have some of those people back!

Aw, yeah. She was awesome. She did a terrific drawing of one of my OC characters which I still have, thankfully. I miss talking to her. I know she's had various health issues but I hope she's doing well.

Well.... TMNT is a kids property.

It became that way. I hate to say "grew" into that way. But that doesn't mean that all the adults that are TMNT fans are tuning into all the cartoons and stuff. I know I'm not. With 2012 I did because I had a daughter who was very much into it for about a 2 year time.

It's hard to point to another example of a franchise that started out rather "adult" and then successfully -- and almost exclusively -- became a thing that only offered new content for little kids. It's kind of an oddity in that way. Sometimes it is the opposite but not really that way.

Police Academy, but that's about it. From the third movie onward, they were definitely more or less kids' movies (with an occasional risque' joke for the grown-ups watching) and that's when the animated series, action figure line, and (later) the live-action television series happened. For like a year around 1989/1990-ish, Police Academy was a modest hit with the kids. Not huge, but it got a little buzz. So arguably its biggest "success" as a brand came after it morphed into a kids-friendly property, even though that also marked the point the franchise officially jumped the shark and then fizzled out shortly thereafter.

I'm hard-pressed to think of too many other examples, though.

Ghostbusters I guess? The first movie was definitely an adult comedy of the 80's with sex jokes and everything, but then it became mostly aimed at kids in the following years with the cartoons/toys.
