Alright so I had a chance to watch most of this DVD. I got up to "Fathers And Sons" before I had to leave for class.

For one I'd like to note the episodes are better then I remember them being. Course I haven't watched them since they were leaked online back when the DVD came out in Australia. Now their not great by any means but entertaining. The only thing is they lack some replay value for me as I can't see myself watching this again in the foreseeable future. Which means maybe in a year I might pop it back in. The whole series has that feel to me actually so that seems to be a big problem with the show as a whole for me.

On to the episodes themselves. The continuity does flow quite well and the story is interesting if you ignore the obvious "Dragon Ball Z" factor. They tried to add a bit more of the Japanese element into it and I give them props for that. I just highly dislike the fact the turtles choose to fight with energy beams instead of their weapons or fists. They yell their weapon names to much and fire techno-color beams all over the place way too often. This argument has been run into the ground though so I'll leave that behind.

The animation has been vastly improved on this transfer. I haven't gotten to see the last few episodes yet but what of it I have seen it looks way better then the Australian release I had. The backgrounds looked horrible and pixelated on almost every episode. This was in the later episodes though, the last three of which I have yet to watch and that's where it got the worst. The last two episodes especially looked really bad. I'm hoping the DVD stays consistent.

Now that I have that out of the way I'd like to mention my major issue with this season. I don't feel like I'm watching turtles. I don't feel like I'm watching some weird anime knock off either though but it doesn't feel like turtles to me. What's missing I can't say but the subject matter is a full 360 away from everything I think about when I think of turtles. I guess it's the dragon transformations, weapon laser beams, and zombies popping up all over. I like the Demon Shredder personally. I know some people think he's lame but I think they handled him well. I liked his rebirth scene rather gruesome for a kids show I thought. All the death and destruction that goes on in the season is what really sets it apart I guess. Though it's all undone basically at the end so it makes zero difference.

I almost felt like this was more of a turtles movie, or mini-series of it's own. It has an ending of it's own, like here's the end of the 2K3 style. It could have been the end to the series. FF was the same way in it's last episode. They finished it off with and ending that could serve as an ending to an entire series if they wanted, though I'm glad they didn't.

I don't know if this really counts as a review but I wanted to toss my opinions out on it and recommend the disk to anyone who hasn't picked it up yet. The DVD is worlds better in quality which personally helps me enjoy it more when every frame of animation doesn't look like a zoomed in drawing in Photoshop. You can still tell the season was low budget with all the use of stock footage but they still did a good job at keeping it consistent with the rest of the series.

Anyone else have any reviews or opinions they'd like to share about the DVD?

I really do think we were left out in the extras part. For me, I love looking at design concepts, character sheets, interviews with the people behind the scenes and so forth (like we had with Larid in the first few 2k3 DVDs). Then again, we've been pretty deprived of extras for quite some time now, so I shouldn't really make that big of a fuss about it.

Otherwise, no complaints. I love my DVD Box set and like to watch the odd episode on occasion.

I agree with Ra. I got kind of disappointed in the DVD's when they started giving us instructions on how to play their card game instead of cool interviews with PL. And going out of order, but that's a whole nother issue.

I saw this DVD at Target (mine are on the way,) and must say I am dissapointed about one thing.

I mentioned awhile back how I wish they'd add the black line and comic panel up top, to match the season 1 and 2 DVD's. I see that they did not.

Now when I have season 1-4 on DVD with the black spine and strip, with comic panel, and Ninja Tribunal sitting between seasons 1-4, and season 6 (which I assume will be re-released with the look of seasons 1-4,) it will look odd.

That is unless, for some reason, they are going to be re-releasing SEASON 5, after they get done with 4, then in that case, I will be double dipping, just for the sake of making my DVD collection, look nice while bookshelfed.

I rather doubt they'll re-release Fast Forward (since it's already done in the 2-Disc routine Funimation is using); and also doubt Ninja Tribunal would be either.

Like I've said before, by the time they get done with rereleasing season 4, the Ninja Tribunal and Fast Forward disks will be LONG out of print.

4Kids would most likely put seasons 5 and 6 back out into circulation using the new format.

I think the only thing that annoyed me after awhile was the need to yell out their mystic abilities when used. The didn't yell out what kind of kicks or punches they did, or talk to their weapons on most occasions. That was the part for me that showed they were under the anime influence.
The dragon avatars felt that way too, but it's just where they were going with this whole Japanese legend plot.

The backgrounds are awesome in the way they have a lot of detail and you just know someone really took their time. I always thought the animation just got better and better so visually it's really great to watch.

It's such a collection of all these new things and no it doesn't always feel like you are watching TMNT but then we have some old comforts added like splinter, Casey, and April and they do eventually take the battle to New York City and Don's inventions like the turtle taxi are thrown in so as far removed as it becomes at times it still maintained the fact we are watching turtles.

I wasn't really expecting extras so I didn't really pop it in to look and it sounds like I was kinda right from what everyone is saying.

And yeah Spit I definitely thought when I ordered it from Australia and saw it for the first time...
"Why wasn't this just a made a direct to DVD movie?" It felt like it really could have been, especially before we knew when and if they were going to air it.

13 episodes x 20ish minute running time = 260 minutes (give or take...) or 4 1/3 hours....one really long movie.

EDIT: The back of the case says 286....which makes it 4.7666666 hours.

Edit x 2: Um...it's kinda similar to the season 1 and 2 releases, slightly different, I guess as a way of saying "LOST SEASON!"

Tell that to Lord Of The Rings, seriously some of them are 4+ hours.

Your right made for TV movie is a bit much but more or so mini-series would work. It could be stand alone. I'm sure edited down though it could easily be made into a 2 hour film with all the intros, credits, and recaps removed. There's also some scenes as well as entire episodes that aren't needed to move the story along that could be easily removed. That'd be fun to try and re-edit it, I might try that.

heh Jester, glad to see how someone else did their DVD's. I did the Season 1 and 2 at the end because once things got out of order, it would have been too hard to put the Seasons where they lay. Don would be split up, etc.

Question to anyone who has this new, Region 1 Ninja Tribunal DVD: are the menu audios the same two they've been using for 2K3 DVDs for the past year (1 (http://www.eatel.net/~jowens/TMNT/2003/menus/TMNT2K3Menu1.zip)&2 (http://www.eatel.net/~jowens/TMNT/2003/menus/TMNT2K3Menu2.zip))? Yeah I meant more potentially it felt like it could have been a film, it would have definitely needed some tweaking to have done it that way. Pretty much every Spit said would have to be done.
It would be fun to attempt

I have to say, I LOVE the artwork in the scans there.

*wish Splinter would be drawn/dressed like that more often*

I'm of the same thought that the season was a little two anime-ish for my taste. If the Ninja Tribunal was a little less spiky-haired and floaty, I may have been able to tolerate them a little more.

No, I mean "new format" as in the way that the pre-FF half-season sets are currently going.

And yes, I expect them to be out-of-print by then, since most 4Kids DVDs don't stay in print for more than two years.

That is how the Fast Forward DVDs are (two 2-Disc, dozen-or-so episodes). So no real difference for FF vs. the re-releasing of 2k3. And Ninja Tribunal does the routine too (just with one 2-Disc release).

Too bad they did away with them, they could have done Casey, Shredder etc.

I have all the single volumes. But there is an error in my Notes from the Underground volume. It shows the same Raphael segment as the subsequent The Shredder Strikes Back volume. And TSSB is illustrated correctly and in sequence. This may be just my individual copy.

No, it was a mass-produced mistake. I only bought my copy right before they announced Season 1 Part 1 (oh well, I was buying it mostly for the interstitials anyway), and it had the exact same mistake.

I've also read there are apparently 2 cover variations for it as well.

Finally finished the Ninja Tribunal DVD. I chose to wait for this thing when the episodes were on You Tube and even when they were being run on TV. That was a...pretty long wait, to say the least.

I can't say that it lived up to my every expectation, but I found it to be a primarily enjoyable season which really *did* feel like a series finale, even if it wasn't.

I couldn't quite see what made it more dark or mature than the previous seasons. From the way fans were ranting and raving, you'd almost think the packaging on the set would be dripping with blood. Still, it did built tension very well and I liked how it tied in themes and storyline from previous seasons. It certainly felt really, really epic.

Having now seen season 5, I think I appreciate the direction Fast Forward took much more, now. I didn't hate Fast Forward, either, mind you. But the futuristic gimmick makes a bit more sense to me. Season 5 was all about mysticism and magic and demons and ghosts and what-not. After 13 episodes crammed with that stuff, I can see the need to go the opposite direction and give us a season-long arc about aliens and sci-fi technology. Season 5 was as much off the deep-end with its gimmick as Fast Forward was.

There were several things that bugged me about this season, namely the "anime" technique of screaming then name of their special attack whenever they used it. That drove me crazy, particularly since they were so inconsistent about it (sometime they'd yell the Japanese name, sometimes the English translation). The Acolytes dying and then coming back at the last second was a bit WTF. On the whole, I really didn't even like them at all.

On the whole, it was a good season, but still a step down in quality from season 4, which (IMO) was the zenith of the show's story-telling.

The lost season and FF are different enough from the first four season that I don't think the uniformity is essential.

I bought the DVD today at Target. For 11 dollars, I could NOT pass it up. I think it is a bargain at that price. They charge you twice that for a 6-episode disc of an anime series.

Now I finally own ALL the 2k3 episodes on DVD.

I bought this dvd off Buy.com for 10 bucks plus free shipping, so (even though this season disappointed me), I thought that was a pretty fair price.

My feelings on NINJA TRIBUNAL are pretty much the same as everyone else. It had the potential to be incredible, but then it just fell apart half way through the season. Shredder was a huge disappointment. He was more like Magneto from X-Men (a masterpiece cartoon FAR FAR too damn long and inexcusably overdue on getting a DVD release) in Shredder clothing than anything. He showed absolutely nothing that would make you think he was a martial arts expert. It was all ray beams and magic. I was so badly hoping for the final battle with him to be a great choreagraphied fight between him and the 4 turtles (with their original weapons instead of the new ones). I didn't mind them 'glowing' to power up but that should have just helped them increase their speed. There was no need for the new weapons or ray beams. I'll gladly take the Utrom Shredder over the 'original' Shredder. At least the Utrom showed a hint of martial arts talent.

I will, however, say that it was still FAR better than anything that I saw from Fast Forward. That season just did nothing for me. To this day I could only watch 4 episodes before I couldn't stand it any longer. I don't know what happens in that season and I couldn't care less to find out. The new weapons, the new looks, none of the former villians (I saw Agent Bishop once), the crappier animation. It was like an entire season of Turtle Titan/Justice Force episodes (the worst episodes in my opinion from the earlier seasons). If I could find both DVDs for sale for a couple bucks one day, then I may pick them up just to say I have them and to help connect the original series with the BACK TO THE SEWERS series (which still puzzles me how they figure that series will do better than the 2003 series but with crappier animation). I'm not a kid though (I'm 26 years old) and I simply cannot appreciate the animation that is so common today. Cartoon Network for example is full of modern cartoons drawn all distorted, disfigured and ugly with very little work done to detail. I hope BACK TO THE SEWERS will be better than I fear it will.

Anyways, this season was decent, but probably my least favorite of the first 5 seasons (the first episode with the cool fight between them and the wooden guys on the rooftop was my favorite). Everything else was just too Dragonball Z-ish (another cartoon which I enjoy) and when they turned into dragons at the end, I could only groan in disappointment.

When I saw the final episode of TMNT season 4 back in May of 06, I was afraid that was it for the 2k3 series as we knew it. I thought the last scene we'd ever see was the turtles arriving in Japan. But I waited in hopes that a 5th season would be produced and thankfully, this series didn't go the way of the Spider-Man animated series from the 90's aired on Fox. Not only was a fifth season produced, but it has finally come to dvd after I waited two long years for it.
The fifth season may have been only 12 episodes long but it still felt like TMNT 2k3 to me. I don't much care about character design or anything of that nature. I just enjoy the season spanning story arcs. So I think the Ninja Tribunal dvd was well worth the wait.

I was glad that the episodes in season 5 were still connected with one another. The story kept me interested from start to finish. I was glad they included s4-e-26 in this set. I heard that we were only going to get the 12 eps from season 5 from Lap of the Gods to Enter the Dragons pt. 2. I liked how the season was broken down into two portions. Some might think the first part of the season in which the guys are training to combat their adversary is slow and uninteresting, but I enjoyed it very much. However, I was also thrilled when the action heated up in s5-E-5 and beyond.

Yes, I admit to having watched them all before on youtube, but it is nice to finally complete my collection of the first 5 seasons on dvd. I actually plan to rewatch the Ninja Tribunal story arc starting this evening because I liked it so much. I was glad to see the turtles actually working with some of their foes to face an evil that threatened them all. I was also pleased to see the fifth season end with a satisfying conclusion with no cliffhanger. I feared having to wait another two years before seeing more plot points being resolved.

The artwork? Well I kinda skipped it. I'm just pleased to have these episodes on my shelf now. Now if only the guys at TMNT.com would post some detailed synopses soon so I can catch up on some of the visual odds and ends I might have missed out on throughout season 5. Sounds like the majority of the battles involve alot of energy beams but I'm interested in getting a play by play of Beginning of the End and the New World Order 2 parter as well as the final three episodes.

I really had no problems with the set. Heck, I waited two years for this and I'm just glad the fifth season was completed. I'm happy it didn't go the way of Mikey's Justice Force series from S2-E-22. Thank goodness we weren't left in the dark, never knowing what happened to our heroes after they arrived in Japan. And thanks be to Funimation for finally releasing a Region 1 dvd set containing these 13 fantastic episodes.

I only wish Nightmares Recycled had been finished and released straight to dvd like Insane in the Membrane was from S4. I'm a pretty big fan of Hun and enjoy episodes spotlighting him. But it was good to see him again in Enter The Dragons alongside Bishop and Stockman. Tengu Shredder was a terrific villain and I was glad to finally get to see him in action. I wish the TMNT had gotten to fight him just a little more hand to hand rather than dragon against dragon. That was great, but a little more butt kickin ninja action wouldn't have hurt either. Still, its TMNT 2k3 and its as close as I can get to the comics without getting to read them. So it was a privilage to be able to finish my collection as well as enjoying these stories.

I got the dvd when it first came out, and just finished it up about a week ago. I have to say, I'm truly impressed, especially with the second half of the season. I hear lot of people complaining about the mysticism and anime-ish qualities, but I think the story makes it a necessary thing, and it never once really bothered me. One thing I think people forget is that these powers and transformations the turtles are using a product of their medallions, not some new power the turtles have. Seeing as how *SPOILER* the medallions are destroyed at the end *END SPOILER* this is a one off thing. To me the turtles seem right at home dealing with asian mysticism and the like, seeing as how events in Japan made their creation possible, along with a japanese master who has tought them the ends and outs of asian rules of fighting and spirituality. And lest we not forget, *SPOILER* Master Yoshi's heroic and emotional return to destroy the Tengu Shredder, a moment for me that I will never forget *SPOILER* Overall, I would put this fine conclusion to the 03 design continuity (and to a certain extent story continuity) against any animated conclusion in history. thank you.

Well said! You're right. It isn't as if the guys have these new powers for good and all. I'm just glad that this story arc didn't go the way of the Canterbury Tales or Fox's Spider-Man series back in 1998. I'm happy we finally got our lost season and our closure.

Oh come on man! The turtles have emulated the style of Master Yoshi their whole lives, been taught to respect and love his memory through the stories Splinter told them while they acknowledge it is Yoshi that intertwined their destinies to Splinter, martial arts, and the Utrom Shredder. Yoshi is the core of everything the Turtles stand for, and in the comics, Yoshi is the whole reason they are trained as Ninjas so they can avenge his death. Considering these facts, I would say Yoshi's spirit being their combined avatar isn't all that confusing.

Well said! You're right. It isn't as if the guys have these new powers for good and all. I'm just glad that this story arc didn't go the way of the Canterbury Tales or Fox's Spider-Man series back in 1998. I'm happy we finally got our lost season and our closure.

Thanks Bizzaro, it was such a relief to finally get these episodes, after I saw them I think I can be satisified even if TMNT Back to the Sewers doesn't turn out so great, we'll always have the Ninja Tribunal!

You did a great review. It was awsome to read.

As I don't have cable and my work schedule I don't get to catch the eps on tv. So until I got the dvd I hadn't seen any of these. I'm glad I got to see them all at once. It is like a huge mini-series. I loved it. I would have been happy if that had been the end.

After I got done with it I popped Fast Forward in, and I have to say it was nice to see the guys get some down time. To me it seemed a good next step. Some breathing room. I'm really lookong forward to BTTS

Thanks I agree, after watching the Ninja Tribunal it was nice to see something so, I guess the best word is, "jubilant". It helped me understand why Fast Forward was so light hearted. There's been other shows like Dragon Ball Z that constantly tried to up the ante on intensity and drama, and etc etc resulting in something like the Buu saga, and overly bloated whale of unexciting action and undramatic drama. Sometimes a breather is a great idea.

I know what you mean. I'm glad they didn't go from one huge arch to the next. Plus I like the character development from NT that carried over to FF. I hope they build on it in BttS

Yeah, FF did seem like it was the TMNT's version of downtime. That makes perfect sense. I really have high hopes for BTTS. I wish they'd release a little more information about some of the episodes without giving too much away. The anticipation is killin me! hehe!

I think it's important to note the Turtles progress as martial artists, as they effectively graduate in Fast Forward achieving the next level of martial arts mastery. Not only that, but Leonardo, Splinter's most advanced student is given the blessing to start training Cody, almost a spiritual passing of the torch from Splinter to Leonardo. As for changes in the Turtle's character lol, it didn't happen, they were the same old guys lol, and I think that's fine, it's probably what most of us want. Do you really want Michelangelo to start acting seriously and Raphal to start being a nice guy? lol
