View Full Version : eyes with pupils

so based on some of the character sheets of the turtles it looks like in Back to the Sewers the turtles are going to have pupils showing through their masks instead of the irisless white eyes like in past seasons.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v156/Jesterangalo/TMNTToetoToe.jpg
Now whether this is going to be set in stone or if these are still just in the concept stages I don't know. But it's diffrent and actually I'm finding my self warming up to the idea of the turtles having their pupils showing with their masks on, and it looks like they even have diffrent shades of eye color. So what does ever one think are you opposed to this possiable change or do you think it's not bad?

I do not mind. In fact, I wish the 2k3 Turtles had always had pupils.

I'm all for them having pupils. However, I do hope they switch back sometimes to none. Like in night scenes perhaps.

I don't hate it, but I think I prefer it the other way. I liked how it was a "rule" that if they wore the mask, there would be no pupils, but as soon as the mask was removed they did. I guess they're doing it this way now to tie in with the new movie, and while that makes since, I still miss the old way.
They do look good though.

I don't care for it myself. I, too, liked how you saw their eyes when they were maskless.
Mike looks rather-- young and featureless.

I didn't like them in the beginning with their pupils showing, but I'm getting used to it. I would prefer it though if you could only see their pupils if they get up really close to an enemy. So if a foot ninja would see the pupils in the turtle's eyes it would already be to late for him :D

I agree with that "rule". It made sense and was a bit more cooler and darker. Murph or Dan did say that they were adding the pupils to tie into the movie and marketing and such
I love how they look with pupils, but they also look cool without them and for consistency I would have liked them to not have them until they revived the turtles again for a new toon 15 years from now ;D

I don't mind I liked being able to see the eyes on the turtles in the movies so I think this could be a good change. Although why do they all have green eyes? :-?
They could have them lose the puplis when they enter the virtual world.

Some one else mentioned this but I wouldn't mind if they have it where the turtles eyes are showing when they have close up shots and then just white when they are in the dark or far away. I think that would be pretty wicked.

I just hope they stick with continuity and whenever they show '2K3' or 'FF' flashbacks they don't draw the TMNT still with their pupils.
I just noticed.... Mikey is around the same size as Leo and Don. No more shrimpy-Mikey.

While the animation is more streamlined and won't look as good as Seasons 1-5 did, the designs themselves are pretty nice.

Well...I like it. However, I still would prefer if we would only see their eyes when they are maskless.
Agreed. It looks good on them, but I'm more of a fan of the pupils-showing-only-when-mask-is-off style. Probably because I love how many expressions you can capture with the face, even without pupils. Eyes can express a lot of character though, so I'll be interested in how this translates onto screen.

Irises different colors. Or maybe just follow what the movie started and give Leo, Raph and Don brown eyes and Mikey the blue.

I don't mind the pupils, but I'd much rather they get rid of the pupils and spend the lines on refining their faces a bit more. Getting rid of the pupils work better for continuity and saves time and money on drawing them.
Jelly Bean

I won't completely mind the simplicity in their faces just so long it's not to much and that they compensate by having good shadowing over their features like they did in earlier season. That and they don't make their hieghts so radically diffrent. :dead:

i don't mind it being streamlined, when Batman: TAS did it, i didn't mind.
that being said, the changes in design kind of remind me of the changes in design from TMNT the first movie and TMNT II. which was a turn for the worst. Bigger eyes, cuter, cleaner characters.
The trend worries me

I'm gonna just take a leap and say, it depends on how it looks in animation. It may look better, it may look worse. I just can't judge them until I see them in motion. And ten to one odds says it will be slightly jarring at first, but most of us will get used to it.

I agree. You can't judge the animation based on the character designs. Also, they're plenty of "streamlined" shows that had great animation, like Batman: Beyond, and the new Spiderman cartoon that's out right now.

But you can certainly judge the character designs based on the character desgins, great animation dosen't make a hideous character look good. When they streamlined Batman TAS and made it The New Batman Advenutres it wasn't a problem, but some of the character designs were fu**in terrible, Bruce Wayne is the ugliest cartoon character ever (then you had the Scarecrow who was down right awesome.)
It's a matter of preference and it's not a big deal. I love the fact that they had no pupils in seasons 1-4 but it wouldn't have killed the show if they did. FF would have been fine with pupils, but that would have been another thing for people to say "I hate FF because..."

No question Batman Animated Adventures had some god awful character designs (Catwoman WTF?!) but at least it was animated well.
I think the new character designs for TMNT are pretty good overall (yes I like the pupils), the only designs I had a problem with were April (looks too young) and Casey (too clean cut looking). After all is said and done though, I'm all about the story. If the plots are good, I'll watch it.

Bruce Wayne was fine, I thought the way the screwed up a beautiful character design like Poisen Ivy and made her look like a weed was unforgivable. In fact all the girls got messed up, they went from having realistic portures and curves and contours to being pointy stick figures with sharp little boobs. And all of a sudden they had rubbery faces with no detail and really wide, black lipped mouthes. :dead: They onely thing that saved the show for me was the good story telling, and thats all I'm really looking forward to. I still have high hopes for the turtles pupils or no pupils.

I didn't like the Spider-Man designs at first (I had a major issue with the dialated irises), but after I got used to them, I really started to dig what they had done.

And for some reason, Joker looked like Freakazoid with Gambit's eyes. And then there was the "The Batman" designs which I never cared for (Catwoman especially, but I eventually warmed up to the Joker).
Then again, I kinda liked the more angular FF Turtles BEFORE they hit animation, and the animators took the designs and made them look even flatter. And it wasn't flattering at all.
And what the shell was up with Hun having a kitty mouth?

Something about how it was animated. The angles were simplified too much in the run of the show, they looked like green Yeild signs with a ninja mask on it.

That opening shot in the Turtle Titan episode.... maybe it was at the wrong angle, but his mouth looked like an upside down V. Tikes.

Yeah, I don't like in FF how their heads look like upside down pentagons.
I am hoping that since the turtles will have pupils this time around that my sister will give it a shot. She utterly refused to watch the 2k3 series because she said the turtles looked too 'evil' with no pupils.

I'm not sure what to think of those designs quite yet, it's hard to tell without animation and context, but I just hope the stories and scripts get less stupid. And it would be neat if the show was to get a lot darker (both in terms of storytelling and sunlight) and more dramatic than it appears to have been lately (I gave up after one or two episodes of Fast Forward...did I miss anything worthwhile?).

They looked MUCH better as action figures and production art. But when they animated them, they made them look so flat..... especially in close ups. There are certain times their heads almost looked triangular.

Now that i've seen the turtles more with their pupils I think it renders their face almost completely diffrent, it gives then a "softer" more innocent look. Especially Donatello and Michelangelo, I thought they looked the most diffrent for some reason, particulaly in the face, their eyes seemed brighter. Any one notice?

the only turtles I don't think translate well is the Raph and Leo. Mainly because even though their looks have been softened, it seems the animators tried to compensate for this by making them more slity eyed and frowny. And it doesn't really make them look tougher it just makes their expressions look pinched and angular. Don and Mikey look more natural to me with their relaxed eyes and exppressions. Hopefully the animators will improve on this or find some kind of middle ground so they can work with the more innocent cuddlified faces of the Leo and Raph and still make them look more grim.
Also I disagree with the turtles having the same colored green eyes as their skin color. Only Don really seems to have eyes the same olive green as his skin.
