The First Ninja Turtles Flick

I maintain that the new TMNT movie is all kinds of awesome and vastly underrated by knee-jerk nostalgic types who need to step back a bit and let go of the past and view the present with an open mind.

I further maintain that the "Elf lips"/"Atomic breath" scene from the original movie is painful to listen to.

That said...


I watched the first flick today for the first time in over a decade, mostly because my four-year-old daughter has developed a burgeoning love of Ninja Turtles, and... well...

Holy crap. It holds up much better than I remembered.

It's a lot darker than I'd have guessed (indeed, dark enough that I half-regretted letting my girl watch it), and while I remembered the Turtlesuits looking cool, I was very pleasantly shocked at how much mobility they permitted the actors; I'd have assumed that they'd be awkward in them, like Keaton in the old Batsuit.


Anyhoo, I offer nothing in the way of new insights, I just want to say that I was partly wrong about the first movie.


That said, Vanilla Ice can never be forgiven in the sequel, and the new flick rules! :)

I still think the turtles acted a little too hokey in the movie and the fighting was never all that serious except for Raph VS Foot in the subway, Raph beat-down by the Foot and the final part with Shredder, while the rest had the turtles cracking jokes and hitting the foot with cymbals and other random crap. I know back in the day the old toon ruled and thus the turtles had to act as such, but geez, despite things like Leo's leader role and Raph being the hothead... all 4 of them basically acted like Michealangelo.


But eh, it was a classic. The sad part that sometimes gets me is when they're all meditating and see Splinter's spirit, giving them all new hope that their master/father was still alive.
